Anyone can explain why we doesn't get official support from LineageOS untill now? - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

I brought this phone and expected it will be the choice of many geeks or developers, and soon to be supported for third party ROM development.
Ended up it is far more disappointing. No support for LineageOS until now and I can't think of the reason. We have open sourced kernel, snapdragon processor, decent spec and predecessor A1 in Lineage's list.
Anyone mind explain or share your opinion?

It's because the Poco F1 was released so close after this phone and it was such a good value for the money as well as being heavily pushed by Xiaomi that most of the developers and geeks just opted for that phone instead.

Be patience. The base work is Lineage version 16, then it works, we can get official Lineage.
And one mire things: A2 uses 2 partition. It is very rare, and different method than others.

Not really... It's exactly what Google specified and what Pixel devices use. Obviously you don't see shortage of development on those devices because of this.
It definitely has to do with the lack of developers and development competition caused by a better value phone such as the Poco F1 and that's why everything is taking a lot of time...

Now I heard the news that Google no longer issues update for Android One devices by themselves. Instead the manufacturer will in charge of that. That's why the updates are slow. We need Lineage soon.

AOSP or Cyanogenmod

Hi does anyone know if this phone will support AOSP or Cyanogenmod? I'm not a fan of MIUI.
After some months, yes.
Thanks!

+1 :good:
CM should be able to bring full featured Marshmallow to it (not cut-down version Xiaomi delivers), should have no bloadware, no backdoors and should be able to provide some normal camera app which will fully utilizes provided hardware.

Truly amazing beast with CM, wouldn't need to change phone within at least 1½ year

Why aren't manufactuers releasing their kernels? I'm waiting frustratedly on kernels over at Oneplus 2 aswell. Need CM there so bad.

There are a lot of answers to this question and each and every brand has it's own.
It can vary from: We want people to have our Stock OS, to we like to violate the GPLv2, to we are horrible bad a writing code (nobody shall see that),.... and goes on forever.
In Xiaomis case I think it is much more simple: It's a Chinese company! (That says a lot, if you want more ask.)
It's a pity to see!

I have been using MI 3 for around 2 years now. And certainly don't see any necessity of changing the phone. But I doubt xiaomi will release the source code for MI 5. They didn't release it for mi pad despite of so many fan requests. Moreover, the bootloader is locked. What a way of ruining the beasty hardware.

I've come to understand you can unlock it quite simple. Yet custom roms on this device seems like a big nono.
Another question. How is the updates on miui global rom? weekly?

In terms of updates, xiaomi is quite fast. Global devs version is updated weekly. And marshmallow based MIUI 7 is a completely different android experience.

I do not get why Nexus users don't try MIUI before buying the phone! There are so many of em! And only a few try outMIUI before buying a phone that is limited to MIUI.

Xiaomi also gives long support, the Mi 5 will surely get Android N and whatever comes after. As long as you like MIUI, having a XIaomi is great!
It is no surprise the thread was closed so fast. Xiaomi is 'subsidizing' their mobile phone sales with the long-term outlook of being the new Chinese-Google, in the same way that console makers do not make enough profit off their consoles to allow for carefree business operation. Rather they sell software, services and additional hardware at a steep price.
Without the premise of providing services in a given country and a lucrative outlook, said country will not be supported as an official Xiaomi sales country.
However most likely the kernel-source topic is already collectively covered in an FAQ somewhere, - and reading and searching is part of the forum's etiquette - to which one agrees upon registering.
As ultimateSpace said, one can agree that MIUI is good. Xiaomi started out as a company by merely providing MIUI as a software product. However Android has radically improved since version 3.x.
However MIUI is such a radically different take in user design (UI)) and interaction (UX). Android is increasingly complex. Let's be honest. Who here hasn't youtubed some Android related instructions at some point or another.
Speaking for myself I really am not keen on learning two platforms, especially when undoubtedly ASOP + Google stack / Google Android outshines the competition.

Coustom roms to Xiaomi note pro - Anyone?

Xiaomi promises to update to Android 6 our beloved Note pro, when are this gonna happen?
Other phones with same processor Snap 810 already has android 6 running like one plus 2.
Xiaomi keep giving us useless updates, and when comes with one good update is full of bugs. - No real developing for our Note pro.
Some coustom roms (3 roms and android 5.1.1 - Mokke and CM12.1 (batery drain problem and developer abandoned this roms), Flyme (full of chinese stuff dont get me wrong, but i can not read chinese, at least the apps could be in english. no google play and gives error installing gapps, ota update gives error and can not install any update)- so little developing.
Any one can give us a real working rom (not Miui) whithout this problems and if it can be android 6?
I don't think there's much going to be in terms of development. If you check github for mokee on the other thread, there's bit of activity.
I think we all agree that the phone is not that impressive especially issues with overheating 810. I don't care what miui fanboys say but it definitely heats up when charging and browsing at the same time. You can't touch your face with top corner of the phone due to the hear. I guess we were wrong if we thought if we able to flash other rooms other miui.
Heck, my galaxy s2 is still getting weekly updates for LP and MM rows. Disappointing. Just going to get nexus 6p

Not a bad OEM at all, I do like Xiaomi but they do make some bad decisions sometimes. Wish there was more development from the community.
this is a great phone, with great specs, but with poor developing, i hope that one or two developers can give us a really great android 6 rom
Given up on the mi note pro and bought G5, guess what nothing happening here in the way of roms either, my wife has the note pro now.

You have to understand that the main developers wont touch their devices. Every now and then someone might port the rom or bring it up but it is always just some random person. The main devs for big teams avoid this OEM like the plague

There are many reasons. The first being that this OEM seldom puts out the proper source code. Violating the GPL is a common thing for china/Asia based devices. Not something 3rd party devs like very much. Then you also have the fact that the MIUI team are known Kangers to the point of removing authorship on commits. We all know how well that goes over. You have to remember where MIUI started. Right here. There is a reason they were banned for so long from here. Another is the warez market that replaces the PlayStore in China based devices. Need I go on?
Don't worry we will see soon Android 6 on the new Miui 8 for our phone...and since there is no problem, there is no need to get new roms but would not be bad to have more choise, also if I would like they care more about camera that is not enough optimized for its quality
Sent from my Mi Note Pro using Tapatalk
Now I know seem very negative about this OEM and in truth I am. The greatest joy I get is when users like you guys do it anyway. Just because the devs for the teams don't get the devices to support doesn't mean hope is lost. It all depends on how much effort you guys want to put in. You have the devices now so you have 2 choices. 1. Take what they give you and accept it. Or 2. Refuse to and make things happen. The first is the easiest road to take.
There are thousands of threads to help. Read up and see what you guys can do. Remember that is how xda started. Taking what oems gave us and making them better. The ball is and always has been in the users court.

I'm not a fanboy of anything (except maybe Fanboy's Adblock List) but I don't experience any of those "810 issues" that get mentioned so much. I use the phone on a daily basis and it never overheats. Granted, I don't play games, so if you do, YMMV. In my usage scenario, the phone can get a little warm when simultaneously charging and using GPS navigation with screen always on but just when browsing? This I really don't get.
To me the phone is actually quite impressive, especially considering how much (or how little) I paid for it. The only annoyance is that the battery capacity could be larger than the ~3000 mAh. That being said, I don't think it's a power drain issue as it's primarily the screen time that is sucking the battery juice, and that is to be expected. So if they could fit a 4000-5000 mAh battery into it, it would have made a marked difference. Other than that, the phone is great.
The little developer attention it gets is because of its limited availability in the West, which is where most (and the best part of) the community-driven development happens. And even in China, the Note Pro has been the most expensive Xiaomi device ever sold to-date. With it, Xiaomi were trying to break into another market segment, or perhaps at least establish themselves as a company that does "premium" phones too. It was never really supposed to sell in high numbers, and for this reason the availability of promotional pricing was also limited. Most of the time, the phone was not really cheap already in China, and when resold abroad through middlemen that also had to earn their cut, it was never going to become a proposition for the masses.
Basically, for high developer activity you need to have a wide user base in the cultural West, due to in particular better work-life balance and the open-source ethos. Missing out on this is Xiaomi's biggest weakness, especially aggravated in America due to the lack of local 4G band support. If you want a lot of development, buy a Nexus device, although these days it pretty much guarantees you'll be overpaying for the hardware. Some Xiaomi devices also get quite a lot of development but for this you should choose a lower-cost one that is or will eventually be released globally. The Redmi Note 3 Pro is one example of such a device and it has already overtaken the Mi Note Pro in terms of development despite being released much later.
As for myself, I prefer MIUI to AOSP/CM in terms of interface although I'm not really happy with the direction its development seems to have taken (MIUI becoming more bloated and less customizable). It would of course be great to have an alternative in case I have to jump the ship but the hype with the version bump from Android 5.1 to 6.0 (which should more accurately be numbered 4.5.1 and 4.6) again I don't get.
Just my 2¢...

That's understandable but it's not the OEM but the actual device. Firstly if you look at phones like the main Mi series or the Redmi series they have HUGE amount of development. The reason for that? .. Kernel sources were released early we didn't have to wait over a year and the user base is absolutely huge unlike the Mi Note Pro that's exclusive only to China no other Asian countries such as India. So you are like comparing OEM's that released a phone e.g HTC One (GLOBALLY) which everyone can get to a Mi Note Pro (EXCLUSIVE TO CHINA) that's why there is hardly any development going + the delay of kernel sources and forgot to mention a lot of people got for the cheaper option such as Mi Note which has a lot more development as the USER BASE IS BIGGER. Simple? If you were developing an app what would you develop it for first? Android or Blackberry OS? Obviously Android as it has a bigger USER BASE. Same goes for the phones developers work on ROMs with a lot bigger user base where they will reach a lot bigger audience.
Even Xiaomi shows this with their actions:
The new MIUI8 Beta gets released for Mi Note, which is much wider spread (due to it's price difference). Even though the Pro has a much better SD810 compared to the Mi Note. That also went for most experiments like a Windows ROM for the Mi Note, but not for the Mi Note Pro.

See you are looking at this wrong. There is a hug diff between developers of roms and app developers. App developers want people using their apps. It's a great way to make money. Rom developers really couldn't care less.
The fact that it is only available in Asia is not really a big deal. Most developers here (myself encluded) have been importing devices for decades. Hell I was using a China based tilt for the FFC before apple ever released the first one stateside. So if developers wanted the device they could easily get it.

You have to understand that MIUI has a history here. The team is known for taking the code of other devs and removing the authorship of the commit. (they were caught out and then they closed the source) There have been many supporters over the years. I was a huge fan when they started because the Theme engine had great potential. Key word is "had". The main developer for APT tool was a huge supporter for a while and then even he dropped all support for Xiaomi and MIUI.
The GPL is also a very big deal to most developers. It embodies that which Linux/Android is built on. Even when they do release it, it is never complete and needs fixing. This only happens because they are behind the China firewall.
If you notice it is not just this OEM. It is many others. If you look in team groups and pay attention you will notice a pattern. There are OEMs that are avoided. Xiaomi has been one of them for years. Huawei has also been one for a long time. Heck they were even on a ban list for Gov employees. And the dreaded Generic named device. Now this is for many reasons. Quality control, After sales ,support, GPL (android), Security concerns, The iphoneish look (this matters to many, far more then you would think). So there are some reasons. Hope this has offered some insight.

Possible CM/AOSP development?

Does anybody have any words/rumors about possible CM/AOSP development for the Mi Mix? I love my Mi Mix but I'm really not feeling MIUI at all. Would love to run a CM/AOSP rom on this phone instead. Though being exclusively available in China only really kills the development momentum from the get go. But a man can dream, can't he?

I agree. I want an AOSP ROM android 7.1.
You'll have to be patient and wait it out as the devices is new and overpriced if you want it now.
Sounds like CM is in the works:

any updates guys?
Is there no way to contribute (monetarily) to help get AOSP?
no kernel sources released by xiaomi, no aosp. it looks like on my previous mi note pro (chinese only device), which took ages to get sources released.
We could get device tree from similar device and build from there but it's gonna be painful and probably we're looking at a half baked product that wouldn't be usable anyway.
In the meantime, we'll wait for the source to be release.
Should be able to pull the blobs from the phone or the build but without the kernel source I'm not sure how to get started. Has anyone seen the kernel source yet?
Xiaomi is usually too lazy to release Kernel sources for devices which don't sell all that much.
They usually release kernel sources for their flagship mass market devices, like the mi5 and also the mid range devices like the Redmi Note and Max as these are officially sold in a few asian markets outside of China.
The low end and the phones mainly intended for the Chinese market are usually left out. Also considering their phones dont support Google officially in the Chinese market, Android version upgrades aren't a priority for them. Majority of their consumers are content with the MIUI upgrages.

Maybe they learn, said this was a concept phone and aren't making many, plenty out there now, and what we're now making a white one, XDA calls the shots, think they don't check this site.
Well, atleast some super moderator in the MIUI forums have confirmed that the Mix is next in line to receive Nougat. So thats there. At the moment, I'm quite happy with the EU ROM. Its bloat-free and has great battery life. I would love to see CM(LineageOS) at one point though.
As much as I hate Apple devices for their closed eco-system, their UI is very polished. I know MIUI aims to look too much like iOS. Apart from the launcher, I dont have problems with MIUI.
And MIUI is one of the better skins on Android. I'll pick MIUI over most other manufacturer skins like Samsung's Touchwiz or LG's UI.

There's no way a device won't get custom ROMs sooner or later it's a developer's dream.
There definitely is a way. If they don't release the kernel source, that's it for anything but modified stock roms.

thats the only custom rom for the mix thus far and they claim that AOSP will be starting soon
In case ya'll didn't know, someone from EpicROM team on MIUI Official Forum mentioned that AOSP development for Mi MIx will start soon.

Nexus 6 change for something new

I'm wondering what should I pick , Galaxy S8 or oneplus 5, one of these will be for about 2 years of usage. Good camera, very fast and responsive system, and these are for exactly the same price in my country.
Personally, I'd never buy a Samsung...
I'm very happy with my OP3T though, that replaced my Shamu.
I am waiting for Essential PH-1 or Pixel XL 2

Honestly, if you're on XDA and you own a Nexus chances are you want the freedom reliability and customization of a Nexus device, I own the Nexus 6 OP3/T and I'm getting my Op5 in the mail soon. It was an easy choice for me. So I hope this helps:

You're saying they are the same price, but are they? OnePlus 5 has 8gb of RAM/128GB of storage and Dual Cameras with Optical Zoom and timely updates and Open Source OxygenOs.
I know Samsung has this ridiculously long feature list but they lack all crucial Android things in my opinion. I'm not gonna list every one but the main one for me is the spirit of Android: "Open Source"

@BoiBundy, I'm waiting to see if anyone gets the OP5 working on Sprint. I think Verizon is also questionable. Of course, that might be the push I need to move to T-Mobile [emoji3]

You have Sprint? Not too sure if it'll work, they say that they have 34 different antennae so maybe bcuz the phone is unlocked. I have At&t and apparently Some people are already reporting to be getting blazingly fast LTE+ speeds. I live in Urban NY so hoping this is true.

It's more complex with Sprint (and maybe Verizon) than just having the correct frequencies. At least with Sprint, the trick includes getting activated on the network. Someone in the OP5 forum is actually working through the process this week.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Back when Google was selling the Nexus 6/p I read a topic on this extensively (for no apparent reason but just to be aware on the topic). People with Iphones, and Nexuses bought from Google had to call up Sprint and add their MEID/IMEI's to the database. I'm thinking, in theory it shouldn't be a problem especially since they have BYOD(Bring Your Own Device) plans. Idk how they operate with dualSIM devices though.

You do know that android is not open source right? Only AOSP is open source. What google ships with devices is not. Just like Oxygen is not open source.
This is a common misconception.

I did say the spirit of Android if I remember correctly. And I didn't mention one thing about what Google ships with their devices(although they are based off of AOSP). And I believe you are incorrect in your statement that OxygenOS isn't open source because they released the kernel source days before the launch and I've attached a screenshot of their website for your viewing. Thanks for the clarity though there are no misconceptions here.

I just mentioned those as an example.

Just because the kernel is is released (licensed under the gpl So source is required) Android is licensed under the apache license (which allows for it to be closed sourced)

OOS is not open source. I cannot go to github, or whever the source is stored, and read and compile it myself. Android Core is released under Apache, but not Google's goodies(hence why AOSP is so bare nowadays; Google has closed the vast majority of your basic apps) The only reason why the kernel source gets pushed is because OnePlus has a legal obligation to do so since they used the Linux kernel which is licensed under GPL

Question Developing a rom for Xiaomi 12 Pro

What skills or things do I need other than the phone in question to be able to develope a custom-rom for this phone? I would be interested to learn more about this.

Lots of knowledge and time and Linux.
Xiaomi 12 pro has A/B partitions which does not facilitate the task
Sample guide.

Thanks @NOSS8
I'm okay with spending time on projects that i would use or share with others and linux is not a new thing to me neither.
The other questions is does this phone have all neccesary components etc avaible to develop a rom for it as well?
I have seen and used xiaomi.eu but it is kinda the same as oem rom but extra goodies from china rom and all agressive battery saving options still remain killing all apps.

Not sure that's enough.
I'm seeing with a developer for an AOSP rom, I'll let you know.
So,the answer:
Hi, have checked and no trees or kernel yet for this device.
Would be able to make but atm not much time. Once trees and kernel would be available though building like crDroid would be no problem.
Following this answer I provided with 2 Github links.
https://github.com/MiCode/vendor_qcom_opensource_wlan/tree/zeus-s-oss
https://github.com/MiCode/Xiaomi_Kernel_OpenSource/tree/zeus-s-oss
Atm it will be a no. Not sure how it will go in time.
Ofc thx for the offer and maybe we'll speak each other soon.
I contacted 5 others developers.
1/Too busy.
2/Too busy.

No news from the developer who had accepted.
Coming from Oneplus phones going all the way back to the 2, I knew jumping to this phone it wasn't going to be the same development experience. But I can tell you from years of watching forums and development that this phone is DOA for development. If anything was going to happen it would have happened long before now like in the spring.
We will be dependent upon official Xiaomi releases supplemented by the Xiaomi.EU customization for as long as we own this phone. There will never be a custom rom. Accept that or get a Pixel 7 before the sale is over.

The biggest problem with this phone is the autonomy even with a Xiaomi Eu rom, maybe with an AOSP it would have been better.
Performance and autonomy, difficult to reconcile the two despite what Qualcomm says and given the comparisons with other Socs.
More performance and better battery life of course, but the reality is different, all of this is just commercial, note that almost all brands that will use the Gen 2 switch to larger batteries, while it is said that it will consume less than the Gen 1, amazing isn't it?
The optimization also seems to have been abandoned by Xiaomi too busy selling its multitude of phones.
As far as development is concerned, the phone is expensive and despite the source code being released 1 month after its release, it is incomplete.
Currently the flagships all have the same problem, autonomy.
