Replacing my Samsung S7 Edge. Should i go with the Mate 20 Lite? - Huawei Mate 20 Lite Questions & Answers

Hello! Well, the time have come for an upgrade. My S7e's battery is dying too quick and is laggy as hell. Looking for replacements, i have the option to get this phone for pretty much nothing on my carrier. Should i got for it?
My main concerns are the overall performance (CPU and GPU) as i hate laggy phones and battery life, would love a phone that actually gets me through the day. Is the Mate 20 Lite good enough for me?

Will be good to mention for what you use your phone mostly.
Anyway, here are my thoughts.
If you are gaming kind user... Go for other phone. Here you must be play at medium settings on most of the games.
If you are camera kind user... Go for other phone. Here you will got a pretty much a mediocre quality photos. AI camera is much of the marketing trick, To me HDR on back camera didn't work well. You cant install a gCam bcoz of a Kirin soc limitations. After shot processing is poor. Overall camera satisfaction is little below average.
If you are social media kind user... Keep in mind screen dimming issue. You will play much with a brightness slider very often in apps.
If you are easy kind user... If you use a phone mostly for calls, little web browsing, few captures with frends that you watching on the phone... Maybe Mate 20 Lite will fit to you. Battery is the bigger advantage of this device. Will take you more than a day and half with that kind of usage.
I'm sure on this price every phone will have disadvantages, but take a look on Poco F1, Honor play, Asus ZenFone 5, Moto G6 Plus or some Samsung A series.

Thank for your insights! Im more of a gamer. A good camera is appreciated, but not an absolute must. I would like it to be on par with my S7e at least though. I will see what i can do then. Seems like this phone isn't the one for me. The Honor Play seems nice but its not available on my carrier/country.

I would say it's a downgrade man! Try to grab a Mate 10 PRO at least!

Buy Huawei P9?

Hey guys, I'm seriously considering getting a Huawei P9. I'm not a big fan of EMUI [i currently own Huawei GR5 (Honor 5X)], but the P9 pretty much the best device in my budget.
Hows the entire user experience? battery life? Speed?!
Since it's Kirin CPU, I'm guessing we'll not see CM on this device for some time? lol
Also, which model is more popular? In terms of software update availability and stuff? L19? L09? or L29?
From my own experience I came from a LG G4, yeh it has an excellent camera and fluid as hell, but I changed 'cuz the battery life (in G4 it suck , charging almost every day, and stopping data and/or wifi to extend it a little more)... Huawei P9 has an awesome battery.. with 31% you can still have like ~10hr (wifi/data on non stop).. Speed?? 3 GB Ram is more than enough, really good, I don't care about how many apps I opened, the response it's fluid and without lags.
I have both the P9 and galaxy S7 because I can't decide which I like the best. So here are my thoughts:
The P9 is the best allrounder, it beats the S7 on nearly everything except the camera and overall functionality.
The camera in P9 is good but compared to the S7 it blow chunks! It is so big difference you can't ignore it.
The more money u have to pay for the S7 is worth it.
And then there is the Emui, it's more fluid than touchwiz but there is just so many stupid things with Emui, like not all media players work on the lock screen, so far I only got power amp, spotify and Google music to show up on the lock screen.
Despite of all this I still come back to the P9, it's just more fun.

On camera, the weak point of the P9 is video. Pictures are amazing. If you depend on video go for s7. If you just wanna take pictures the P9 is absolutely fine.
Also check out the Nougat beta for the P9 on youtube, from my experience so far Huawei has been very good with updates. And the Nougat rom (EMUI 5.0) will change things a lot in terms of software.
And the hardware is amazing. USB C, full metal body (Glass backs are a no go for me personally) and no camera bump. FP reader is perfect. Everything is fast and smooth, I've seen no slowdowns at all and battery is great too (2 full days minimum for me).
If you like to flash custom roms and stuff and use CM etc, one look in the dev thread will show that custom kernels/roms are just now slowly coming on. Recovery, root and xposed are all working fine though.
I went for the P9 over the S7, because it has way better price/performance ratio and for me better hardware design. It's just a much more interesting phone to me.
The P9 will give you more bang for the buck. Very fluid UI (no freezing, stuttering or random reboots). Everything just works (bluetooth, wifi - I get wifi in the house in places where I didn't get any with my LG G3 and OnePlus 2). Camera is great for still photography. Video quality is still pretty good even though it doesn't do 4K or have OIS. And the fingerprint scanner is just ridiculous... Takes just 3 or 4 taps to set up and works lightning fast every single time. Phone design is very sleek and feels great in hand (no camera hump neither!). Battery life is pretty good with about 4 to 5 hours of SOT. On slow days it can last 1.5 - 2 days.
EMUI takes some getting used to and takes some setting up to get everything working the way you want to, but that just means the initial set-up process is just a wee bit longer than on other phones.
If you don't like the look (like me), just install Nova Launcher and an icon pack of your choice. That'll give you double tap to sleep as well!
As for theming: there's quite an active theming community for EMUI on Google Plus.
With Nova launcher, icons and an EMUI theme running you can get close enough to a stock experience.

Should i buy the Huawei P9 ?

Hello,i want to change my phone. Now i'm having a little P8 Lite and i really like this phone, good performance and everything for the money i paid. Now i want to upgrade,i wanted an OnePlus 3 but he's ruined now and i really want to hear some things about the P9. About performance, battery, updates (+other things)and if there are any stable custom rom (i didnt searched nothing about). Thanks a lot !
3GB RAM seems plenty good (though I don't play games on it)
Camera is good (this is a big deal since the camera is such an important part of a smartphone)
Performance is great for me (non-gamer)
Battery life is awesome compared to my 5 year old phone that ran Android 4.
Hate the stock launcher, but Nova fixed that and I really like my P9.
Only real pain in the ass was rooting it, but maybe others had no problems rooting.
Not sure about custom ROMs because it is still pretty new.
Seems Nougart beta update is here, but lots of people trying to go back so I'll wait till it is out of beta.
btw - isn't the P8 only a year old? are you really buying a new phone every year? If so, you have too much monies. gimme gimme gimme some plz lol
No!! Don't buy it! It´s ****! It is pure ****! I have it for 8 months now and i hate it!

okay. I don´t care The phone ist mostly average. The hype over the camera is just a hype and the S7 Camera is WAY better.
Apps crash. Aluminum Frame is to sensitive. Display gets scratches VERY fast. There are way better phones for the money.

Oh and i forgot. EMUI is really bad. Trying to be Apple but not understanding what users really need. Shiny on the surface. Big lacking in depth.
I'm using P9 for 4 months now and I wouldn't buy it again. The biggest problem with this phone is its software- it's a huge mess, it has problems with notifications and killing apps in background (you have set EVERY app to keep it in memory if you want to keep it in memory after turning off the display) to , the camera takes around 10 seconds to open and it can really really slow down. Sometimes it's ultra fast and responds to commends immediately but other time it can be slow as f***. But not all is bad: display is very good, camera performs well (video recording sucks tho) and it doesn't run hot. So yeah, I would consider some other phone on your place. OnePlus 3T propably.
I have it for 2 month and started to dislike it. At first I loved it, now I would gladly switch it with OnePlus 3/T. Don't buy. Better invest in Samsung now they are on sale or a lot cheaper.
Wow!! Anyone here interested in selling their P9?
So much negativity
I bought it pretty much day one and I still love it. It's the best phone I ever used. The design is very nice imho and while it's not bullet prove it's certainly better than the all glass Samsung ones. The software is meh, but this is android so you can do pretty much anything you like. I'd love to have double tap to wake but other than that I'm very happy and compared to Samsung and Sony phones which I used in the past updates are basically as slow as any other android, except nexus/pixel of course. Battery life is nice too.
One+ is a great alternative but the screen size is borderline big for me even with the p9 so that would not be an option for me personally.
I have it for few monts and it's working very well. The camera are working great, no more than 2 seconds for opening, no lag even after I have downgraded from Nougat ...
Yeah, maybe is not so great like the S7's camera, not so good in low light, but the price is other too ... in good light the pictures are very good. I'm loving this EMUI, it is simple and intuitive. Between S7/S7 Edge and P9, the last was the winner when I have made the choice ...

Is the camera really that bad?

I'm curious because I've read that a lot of people don't like the camera. Why is that? I'm not sure if I should buy that phone.

Why you make a new topic about this because its been talked about and some hate it but many love it. But why focus on words when you can judge for your self when you go to places like flickr and see how each phone takes them photo's

The point and shoot is second to none.
The pro and night modes are both second to none..
Telephoto lens is superb
Only thing is say ia better is HDR on the pixel.
Besides that the p20 Pro stands alone. Even against late 2018 phones.
Unbeatable point & shoot camera performance. Never seen a camera fair that well on phone before.
Pixel 3 camera is very good but not as refined or versatile as the Huawei system.
If you don't know how to tame it, you will not like it. But if you can tame it and know the capabilities and limitations of the sensor, you will love it!
I'm having a blast with it, because i know how it works inside out and now i can push it to it's limits.
/ Magnus
I love it
The thing I don't like is that I often get blurry images if I point and shoot
Hello,
For "HDR" effect, yu can use "night mode" in the day time. Otherwise I love the camera... competely... Have been using this phone on daily bases for 3 months and I'm astonished.
Here are some pictures - point and shoot

You got your hands on Pixel 3 already? Weird I thought they're not supposed to deliver until sometime later.
Not at all, There is a entire thread showing the amazing photos this phone can deliver, this phone camera is versatile, it has the best nightmode out there, the best zoom, and the main 40mp sensor can capture a lot of detail, Last night i manage to take a photo of a lighting (https://i.imgur.com/32TxPqG.jpg).
a flicker with P20 pro photos :
https://www.flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/
Yea, i love the P20 pro camera and night mode is freaking awesome! Only negative things i can think off is no stabilization on 4k video and the selfie cam could be a bit better but besides these 2 i think this camera is pretty much the best you can get right now for a cheap price.
for me it doesn't matter what i read or what other peoples say.
The camera of this phone is insane. Especially the night mode. Never saw something like this. Night shots looks brighter than with the human eye?
The only thing i don't like is the post processing of the camera app (oversharpening)
P20 Pro camera is neither bad, nor cheap, but both of those are highly subjective opinions. And you know what they say about opinions....
I am enjoying mine very much.

The front/selfie camera is what most people are complaining about, esp. the color saturation. It gives a plasticy color to human skin.
The main camera is superb.
The camera is really bad on this phone.
Pictures are so over processed and lake dynamic range.
In 10mpx it's inusable and in 40mpx il't noisy. Video recording is also bad.
This phone is just horrible. My olds S8+ and Xiaomi Mi9t are much better except for zooming and low light. S9+ destroys completely the p20 pro.
I really regret my purchase.

I cannot second that. The only thing i can complain about is video recording.
Main shooter is more than capable to take great pics. It's incomparably better than op 7t.
The camera quality on this phone is really good. Anyone who says it's crap is objectively wrong.
The camera quality in the p20 pro still today better than many flagship, more than one year later, I compare the camera with the recents iPhone 11 pro max, pixel 4, mate 30 pro, samsung note 10, and it's nothing to envy of them, the kirin 970 is slower in games, but is smooth and very fast still
what is the best siting of camera ? in 10 m pixel or 40m pixel ?
Depend on the situation, with good daylight 40, 10 if you don't want big pictures files, for zoom, night and difficult light conditions better 10, normally I use 10, because Huawei optimized the software and the cams to work together in this setup, working main, telephoto and monochrome camera sensor together for improvement results

The first things to do with your realme x2 budget king

First, I strongly believe that sub $300 phones can do almost everything you'll ever need
in your Android phone as Budget phones keep getting better and better.
Realme x2 is the latest proof of this and it took me some time to research to come to
this conclusion from this thread
I was about settling for Mi 9 Lite (Mi CC9) when the global version of X2 came out
and it turns out that the only thing I will miss is IR blaster, which is not a deal-breaker
when you compare it to the things I could gain with Realme X2 over it.
I just ordered Realme X2 Global version (8/128G) here for $279 with free shipping which is fast.
You could even get a better deal with 11.11 festival around the corner but this is a great
value. And as my tradition is, I always discuss the first things I do with a new phone.
BOOTLOADER UNLOCK
This one is still a mystery on how to unlock the bootloader but a mystery I am determined
to find an answer to before my phone arrives in about 2 weeks.
TWRP, ROOT, AND MAGISK
I am not sure how much bloatware is in X2 Global version but I usually use phones
with root access so, I will have to get that.
I am a bit worried about the poor Dev community response to this great phone but I am
not perturbed bc it is still a new phone.
ALL KINDS OF TEST
I don't usually believe in antutu benchmarks but I'll add the test for others who will love to see it.
I am a real-life day to day usage test kind of person. Wifi download speeds, file copy and write speeds,
LTE download speeds, multiple SOT test, multiple battery drain/Charging test, NFC test, Gcam, Photos and
videos, inbuilt mic recording quality, GPS test, Bluetooth tests, OTG test etc.
SD730G is here to stay and will still be a 2020 budget king SoC contender so, you cannot go wrong with
Realme X2
Good post.
What some people don't realise that the difference between 730G and 855+ SoC is very minor and you can't feel it in your every day use. But for some reason people are willing to pay $200-$300 more for a 855+ device
Also the new hyp about over 100MP cameras is pretty riddiculous. Taking 100MP photos everyday is just so unpractical and more often than not, it would distort the quality of the photo.
I am pretty hopeful that the dev community will pick up once the device is a little older e.g. in 6 to 8 months time. We should be able to unlock the bootloader and get custom ROMs for it.

The main beef I had with realme marketing strategy was the close proximity of X2 and X2pro
The X2pro took out the shine from X2 a bit as I strongly believed that X2 is a better all-round phone
than Redmi Note 8pro. They should have given it 3 - 6 months Gap before marketing the pro version
Xaiomi selling Mi Note 10 with (SD 730G) way higher than X2 is a great marketing Advantage for
Realme X2 which is not doing too badly on the megapixels count race. Megapixels don't count
all that much (ask Pixel and iPhone) good sensors and software are way more important.
Once the dev community picks up, you can even tweak this phone to get an improved
performance and software experience.
I am not interested in spending an extra $150 - 250 for SD855 it makes no sense to pay that
to get 4k 60fsp that I may not ever use as 4k30fsp is large enough. It's like paying more to
get a more power-hungry processor, Power draining 90Hz and stereo speaker when I
consume all my media with headset or Bluetooth, Yeah! I'll pass, not a heavy gamer and even if I do, SD730G can game heavy. The real-life difference is so minute and insignificant. Unfortunately, some people still buy phones only antutu benchmark scores
Like Bolumstar said, Realme killed the x2 when they released the x2pro almost immediately. A quick search of realme x2 on google, and all you will see is realme x2pro. It was really annoying cos this is a great around phone. 730G is as good as it gets for me. Anything higher is like killing an ant with a sledgehammer. What exactly am I gonna do with 108mp camera? Take a picture of the solar system? 64mp is already crazy enough. 108mp is madness.
I have the China version and I can't wait to install the global rom on it. I'm hoping on all the tech guys here to come up with some instructions on how to go about. Thanks

You said it. Totally agree. I'm a Pixel 3a user (which has the even "worse" 670), and I definitively don't think that I will need even a Hertz more of CPU. And I'm surely not the "average user" person.
I'm thinking of actually buying this for my mother or give her the Pixel 3a and take this one, but I think I kinda fall in love with the Pixel experience right now (also if Android 10 is pretty buggy IMHO).

The Pixel 3a is a rip-off in comparision. BTW. it is not all about performance, the 730G is much more efficient.
Realme x2 is a great phone. On the processor you have already said enough, the cost difference with the slightly more powerful processors is too much not to consider the best 730g of these.
Obviously the performance of a smartphone is not the result of the soc alone, but the X2 is the set of these, of a good amount of ram, 8GB in LPDDR4X, a UFS 2.1 internal storage, a super amoled FHD + display with a readability spectacular in all light conditions and with any reading angle. I use it with a Samsung V3 512 GB sd card and the file transfer from the internal storage to the latter is very fast. the connectivity sector is also excellent, good wifi and LTE reception, excellent bluetooth, completed by the presence of the NFC. as for energy consumption it is easy to spend praise, I read the battery drain on the forum, well I have no knowledge of it, I have always used the Ampere widget on the home to keep the current constantly under control and so far I never had having seen a smartphone consume only 100 mh at rest between 350 and 700 in use, even heavy. To this must be added the VOOC recharging speed which is really fast and unimpeded, I explain, with the redmi you have the quick charge which should give almost the same performance, but from personal experience I know it is not so, while I loaded with a charger quick 3 the phone became a stove, temperatures between 45 and 50 degrees, throttling and reducing the charging current from 3200 m to just 1500. The Realme quietly charges with temperatures of only 30 ° at 3400 mh and drops only on '86% of the battery at 1500 as rightly needs to be.
I now come to what I think is a huge mistake that all average users make when they choose to buy one phone over another. The first question is: "How many megapixels does the camera have?"... In my opinion, a smartphone is a smartphone, it could even have six thousand megapixels, it can never, ever have the performance of a camera, even simply of average price . Photography is not done with megapixels, but with good quality optical lens, with shots chosen through optical and non-digital zoom, with lighting reading systems for choosing the right exposure times and apertures... The smartphone in my opinion it is enough that you make decent pictures of your daughter's birthday and pictures of the holiday and that's it. I give an example... How many of us really want to go around in the dark countryside to photograph the stars with the astrography function??? Because only in this way the stars are photographed, without optical noise of city lights, and I add with exposure times that they would like a tripod that follows the rotation.
The Realme as a photographic sector also decently answers with the camera stock. It has a bit too much saturation in the colors, but if like me you are content to take "normal" photos, giving up slowmotion, night photos, just look for a decent gcam that allows you to set the white control in the settings, AWB, and the HDR+ options and it becomes spectacular. Obviously this makes it clear that the photo hardware is excellent and a bit more effort than Realme would be enough to improve the software and the stock camera would be enough.
So far I have always had mid-range smartphones, starting with the legendary OnePlus One, going from Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi note 7. everyone has endured shameless modding, the One has seen six versions of android and hundreds of roms, and it scared me a little the fact that the Realme X2, both, we hope, because new, and because as has been said above was overwhelmed by the Realme X2 Pro, it still didn't have a good community dev. Instead I must say with great satisfaction that even as it is, stock, with a bit of debloat from adb, with AdGuard that removes the ads from the browsers, with Sd Maid pro that keeps it clean thanks to the scheduler, I don't even feel the lack in the slightest of custom roms and, even for the first time, even root.
Of course if there would be everything it would be easier, but, which I do not understand, Realme seems to put stakes to unlock the bootloader, in my opinion or give it a chance without detracting from the phone reducing it category in the security environment or not. ..
But this is a strategy speech and we will see how much will be exceeded by the spread of the telephone. In fact I am convinced that the development community is regulated by the demand and the offer, the more we will be the owners of the device the more modding demand there will be and the more we will have ...

Question How is performance and camera after updates?

Hello,
All initial reviews show some spontaneous performance lags and a rather not so satisfying camera. As the phone is now on January 2022 update, have things become better?
Thank you

hi, what performance lag are you referring to? what is wrong with the camera? in comparison to my friends samsung S20FE mine looks a LOT better and has a load more detail. it is a 64 MP camera and it is pretty good imo vs the phones I've had this is by far the best. when it comes to performance lag, I'm not sure what you are referring to? is there a game too demanding for the phone? I can run some PS2 games on my phone like DBZ budokai 3, tenkaichi 3, Kingdom hears 2, Digimon rumble arena, digimon Data Squad, Simpsons hit and run and a few others at pretty much 60 fps with a minor dip here and there. Genshin runs better on higher graphics settings since the GPU picks up where the CPU is a little lacking but yeah Genshin is the only game I've found that has some stuttering on this phone so far. don't expect miracles for the price but at the price I paid for it there is nothing that even comes remotely close to it in South Africa
Hi, thanks for your input, I am referring to all reviews you can read about this phone.

yeah, I like the camera but I'm no expert photographer, I've only used the camera for personal use but I love the quality! if the reviews on google by actual users don't go searching for the guy like this one if the guy didn't buy a fake he is delusional.
"Most Worst phone ever. (Camera quality is very bad) Don't buy4 months ago
Most third class mobile. Check the camera before buy this phone. 2mp camera is better than this phone cam(64mp). All reviews will be 0. Realme is better phone from Redmi. Disappointed to buy it. Feedback after using 4months."
still after updates the camera quality is worse. photos remain patchy and washed out. my earlier note 7s pro was 100 times better then this. and yes a 2mp camera is even better then this. please dont buy this phone even in a 2ns sale.
