Camera quality is very disappointing. Doing smt wrong?? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Bought this phone yesterday. I'm new to Samsung. I had seen and read a lot of reviews and articles, and all were very positive about the camera, but in my experience its very disappointing. Especially the front facing camera. It's always blurry, and what is up with all that smoothing out??? Even when it's off it just does the same. I haven't changed any special settings. After looking for a solution I see that I'm not the only one experiencing this. Is this just a question of taste, or is there really something "broken" at the moment with this camera?? I'm really considiring returning this phone. 1000€ and this is the picture quality I get?

I paid considerably less than 1000€ a week after launch, I think I'd return it if I paid that much. I've had some good photos from the camera and also less impressive ones, it seems Pro mode is the place to be.

Yes the selfie cam sucks. Too much post processing causing the smoothing effect. I'm not an Instagram model, I don't need to look airbrushed.
The rear shooters though can produce some really nice pics.
It's the software that causes issues. The hardware is solid.
The other option is to download GCam which uses Google's HDR Processing from the Pixel devices. It produces really nice photos. Some GCam builds have Night Sight working as well.

You might find this link useful for installing GCam, it seems to be a bit hit and miss, the camera works for a little while and then just force closes every time it's launched.

Welcome to the esteemed club of Note 9 owners! unfortunately a lot of us are already having this issue and understand exactly how you feel! there is a thread on here already about this: see below
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/help/galaxy-note-9-camera-sharp-t3835459
and trust me its annoying having paid so much for this device and then get this rubbish picture quality!.... and I bet you any money Samsung folks read these forums so whether its a case of "cant be bothered" or "working on it", no one knows!
I hear the point about Gcam download as an option but I really feel I should not need to download additional software to make up for Samsung's lapses. We buy this device cos we love it and desperately want it to work, guess Samsung makes them only to get our money... not rocket science who the real losers are !

Tbh I also paid far less. But still, one expects to get a decent camera for this price and all that marketing jibberjabber. How come all big YouTube tech reviewers praise this camera ?! Money makes them dance

Now if these problems can be fixed with future updates that would be great, but is there communication from Samsung about this? And can this be fixed with (near) future updates.

So you don't have any third party apps on your device?

I'm about to return my phone and get my money back.. But i'm still doubting. .. Can these problems be fixed with future updates? Can we expect a good stock camera app in the near future?

The only likely upgrade would be Samsung's take on Night sight, I wouldn't expect any miracles.

Guys, hey, HW is solid as someone said, i also have some issues with cam quality, i thing that we must wait till we have pie update and then see what changes. Like im working with audio eq and for example player FIIOX5 III sounds quite bad at beggining, but later firmware updates makes it much better. So i thing - wait for software update and then decide to do something with it or ask for refound.

thx for your input

It's been hit and miss too for me, coming from a Pixel 2 XL.
Things are considerably better since I use the Arnova's Gcam port (better than my Pixel 2 XL in fact), and it made me realize Samsung's app/post-processing is the issue, not the Note 9 camera/sensor
Samsung needs to go back to the drawing board and do something about that agressive, over the top post-processing. Like I said, Gcam produces way better, more natural looking like pics, and most of all, they're not blurry (faster shutter time with Gcam maybe?)

More features like Advanced HDR+ and Night Sight are working for me with Arnova's builds vs the one you just posted.
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-arnova8G2/

Can you post some sample pics? This phone is consistently rated as one of the top cameras on the market and I have to say that I'm not disappointed. In good conditions it's hard to say that it's any worse than my DLSR with expensive lenses. Night shots are excellent too. If your rear camera is as bad as you claim, perhaps there is a hardware problem? The front camera does apply a lot of post processing (which I'm not a fan of either) but you can turn most of it off.
TLDR: either you have an actual hardware problem or insanely high expectations, the camera on this phone is just about the best on the market. When I say that it comes close to my DSLR, I'm not kidding.

Edit: the first one force closes every time, and the second one doesn't have all options it seems, like night vision en HDR+

That's the one you want: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova-based_v.1.3d_TlnNeun_2.apk
If it force-closes on launch, that's because it was installed over an older version, just clear data + cache and relaunch, it will work

Reading some of these comments . . . The stock camera app takes fantastic looking pictures IF the subject is not moving. Try taking a picture of your kid or pet doing anything BUT standing still and the photo is a blurred mess. Wish the shutter speed was faster smh not holding my breath on Samsung fixing it thru an update

Use Pro mode if you want to be able to specify your shutter speed, I find the raw's are pretty good once they've had some basic touch-ups.

Is the camera really as bad as the reviews say?

I've currently got a rooted HTC sensation which I'm due to upgrade. My choice is between the HTC one and the galaxy s4, but my choice seems to come down to the camera quality. Is the one camera really as bad as the reviews suggest?
I havent got any examples that I can post but the quality seems much crisper that my previous device (Sensation)
Low light shots seem ok and auto-focus seems to work much quicker. Zoe is also a nice feature!
link to the review?
Why create a new thread? There's at least 3 threads talking about the camera....... :banghead:

Are you just being lazy or just being a troll by opening a thread with a negative impact title? Hard to tell...Anyway, if really interested you could have looked at least at one photo thread which contains dozens of camera reviews.

No need to be like that, that thread has loads of pictures from all the one series. Not specifically the new one. And the various reviews I've read seem to conflict, some saying it's okay, others stating it's useless. Hence me asking for anyone's first hand experience with the phone now it's been released.
Start at the last page and work backwards, plenty of user pictures from the One.

Well, for serious photography I hang a DSLR around my neck and carry a couple of extra lenses in the backpack. For snapping a quick shot whilst I'm just pottering about or hanging with the guys the camera is far more than adequate.

Sorry man but today we have already seen a topic closed for plane trolling and in this context your thread title seemed a little out of line especially since there are already lots of user pictures and opinions available, i needn't speak about dozens of reviews. Didn't mean to be rude but next time better check first what info is available and maybe select a more appropriate title.
In my opinion i was expecting the photos taken to be a bit better but i am also quite optimistic about the fact that software updates might turn it into an excellent smartphone camera.

It's okay, not trying to bash the phone, just trying to find out which phone to upgrade to!
I saw that thread you're talking about and even commented a little, but unfortunately there were a couple of Samsung fanboys who turned it into a company vs company thread instead of just having unbiased comparisons between phones.
I don't have a decent camera, nor do I have the option to carry one around all the time since I'm normally dragging a couple of infants around with me, I'm not really an avid photographer either. I just want it to be at least as good as the one on my sensation since I do use it fairly regularly, but can't make my mind up on handset! I think I may have to just go into a phone shop and compare for myself.
Like I keep saying
The HTC One camera is an extremely well equipped camera, OIS, super fast shutter, low light ability, f2.0, wide angle lens, powerful macro ability, best HDR on phones, all combined gives a very powerful camera
However as usual with HTC it will still require manual efforts from ur side those camera settings are there to be used
Compared to your sensation its light years ahead of it, compared to the One X you loose something and gain something in return
Things to keep in mind always reduce sharpness in HTC cameras and for the One in specific auto enhance or contrast increase might be needed as well due to the extra light in its day light photos
But it's not match to the 13MP detail from the sgs4 camera purely in terms of resolution
I came from DHD, wife still has Sensation. We're in full agreement that the One takes much better pictures.

I am in similar position. For me which phone I choose next will be down to camera. One thing I missed after iphone was the way you cam trim videos before sending to get correct file size. As far as I am aware only htc on android can do this - forward to 1145 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23nQyOpixiU&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
I will no doubt get the one but camera is a worry as htc are not really promoting it in any adverts I have seen so far in uk. More blink and boom ?? Waiting for 64gb too but if we ever get it who knows ???
The camera thread is great but I am now info overloaded so really have to go test one in more depth.

Do you use digital zoom or lot, or blow up pics after you make them? IMO, this is the weak point of the camera. It's lens is 28mm (35mm film equivalent) and you don't have the latitude to zoom that you would with more MP. Personally, I am more a telephoto guy than wide angle so it bugs me, but everyone is different.
(I decided to punt and keep my S3 for now. Camera plus questions on headphone audio. Mixed feeling though, as I really like the low light attributes and boomsound speakers.)
Just wait until release and judge for yourself and decide if it's really an amazing camera.
I have never, in too many years to mention, used a digital zoom. Never saw the point in stretching one sensor pixel to fill 4, 9, 16 or more final image pixels.
Sent from my Tricked out HTC One via xda-developers application
Yeah, digital zoom is terrible regardless of the camera used. I do however sometimes zoom in on my photos, which I assume won't be much good with the one.
Afraid that zooming after the event won't get you anywhere with the One. Granted, although my phone's have progressed from being a phone/txt device that could play snake when I was bored all the way to a miniature computer that can make calls as well I've never viewed them as a camera replacement. Hell, you can get a little 8Mp snapper that's smaller then current headline phones for a fraction of the cost AND they've got optical zoom with a lense that retreats into the body of the camera when you put it back in your pocket.

[Q] z1 camera issues

Hi all,
Hoping someone can help please. Just took delivery of my z1 and the pictures look absolutely terrible. It's current set to superior auto but every photo looks so grainy on screen. Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Yes, I'm less than impressed with mine - certainly nowhere near dslr level as they were touted. I get a lot of noise on mine and they are over exposed.
If you manually focus with camera button then take pic, results are somewhat better but still disappointing.
Could you please post some of the pics you've taken please? The reason I got rid of my LG Optimus G was because of the subpar camera, been waiting for the Z1, so I'd hope it's not a lateral move on the camera front

yeah same here...photos appear washed out in low light..also a lot of purple grains appear when attempting to take a photo in low light...for a flagship device which touts camera as its biggest selling point z1 is a massive disappointment...also the microphone did not work for me while connecting the phone to a headphone without a mike...ill be going to sony service centre on monday...hopefully they'll replace my unit..will update whether the other unit's camera is better...
Guys, do we have any informed update about the camera low quality issue? Is it an early release issue which will be fixed by an update or should I return my phone and get another one in a couple of months?
Please share your input because I am really skeptic about this otherwise excellent device.
Use Manual mode with Night setting
I've come across a lot of people complaining about the camera not giving out noise-free images like it's supposed to. The trick is to use manual mode. I agree, if you use Superior Auto mode, it's a miss most of the times, and when it does work, it gives a purple-ish tint at the corners.
However, If you use manual mode and select the SCENE to NIGHT, the images come out amazing and noise-free!
[DO NOT JUDGE THE IMAGE BY WHAT THE VIEWFINDER SHOWS YOU. A lot of things happen when you press the shutter button. The viewfinder simply goes red for making it easy to focus. The final image in the gallery is a hundred times better]
The Scene modes are one of the most commonly ignored settings.
I hope this helps!
Sorry. Most people just want to use auto mode and haven't got time to fiddle here and there.
The scenes help but they are not the cure in that the underlying problem of poor quality is there. I wonder if people who post either are using a different software version, or are being paid by Sony to post positive remarks.
Nor is it acceptable that we should resort to using alternative camera apps. This phone cost £600 or up to.
It should work as advertised on the tin.

Did anyone face auto-focus issues? Sometimes the camera stuggles to auo focus..
No focus issues on mine, just horrible, grainy images. really really unimpressed with the camera. If this is a firmware issue then I am really unimpressed that they saw fit to release it in this state.
Example's here - note the complete lack of any detail, the grainy over compressed background. Zoom in slightly and see the over sharpening that has been done, the bike frame goes jagged.
The camera was one of the reasons I bought this phone, and in its current state, I declare it 'unusable'

Hi Nigel,
I appreciate your frustrations. I have just moved onto the Z1 after holding onto my old but trust worthy Galaxy S2 and after the expense and hype surrounding the release feel let down by the camera as well. Suggestions seem that issues may be resolved once further firmware updates come about, not sure how soon these will happen though.
Anyhow off to take some crappy photos sine it's nice in Stirling today lol!

Oh, and its no good looking at the pics on your phone, if you want to see their true ugliness quality-wise, look at them on a PC.

Why the OnePlus 5 Camera is a Big Fail is real world usage

'Clearer Photos' - written on the side of the box. The biggest hype surrounding the OnePlus 5 has been about the camera. On paper the specs look great, 'benchmark' photos and scores look good too. But in real world usage it's a big Fail. This is why..
All else being equal, more mega pixels means lower quality images. This may be a surprise to some. This is the reason. More pixels on a sensor means each pixel is smaller. Which means over the same time period less light is recorded on each pixel. To solve this problem there are two solutions. 1) Hold the shutter open longer to capture more light. Longer shutter times causes blurring and softness if any movement is present. 2) Increase the amplification from the sensor (ISO). This causes noise and degrades the image. The result is lower quality photos.
So why have a high Megapixel count? Resolution. In the early days of digital photography the low resolution from cameras was a limiting factor and you could easily see the pixels if you zoomed in. 1.3MP for example is 1280x1200 pixels. That's not going to look great on a high resolution screen or blown up. So what about the 20MP sensor in the OnePlus 5? Well that's 3'600x5'400 pixels! This is only useful if you're printing images out in a large poster size. With the tiny sensors in a mobile phone you'll only be able to produce good quality images at this resolution if there's tons of light and the scene is still.
Here's a newsflash for OnePlus: We don't use our mobile phones to take photos of trees in the sun (unless you're a phone reviewer). We use our phones to take photos of family, friends, pets, activities, often inside or at night and other low light scenarios and we post them on Facebook and Instagram.
We need in focus, non blurred, 'Clearer' photos that will mostly be viewed on other phones. This translates to phones with good low light performance with fast auto-focus. We don't need or want 20MP degrading that quality. We also need a better auto-focus system. Have a look at the last couple generations of the Samsung Galaxy to see how it should be done.
This is why the OnePlus 5 camera fails in real life usage and is a disappointment. Please listen OnePlus. Look at what the other manufacturers are doing and get it right on the OnePlus 6.
surprising post perhaps dual camera understanding is requiredbefore writting so much about powerful dual camera phone
Reading this was such a waste of time
Perfect summary of whats going on. Only god knows what was going on in OP's marketeers. "Clearer photos" my ***!
I am so much disappoint!
Edit: The sad thing is that I even think (then again, I'm an idiot..) their strategy can make sense. Yes, they could have put ONE sensor in there that yields better results than the current setup. But having TWO cameras is the new trend and, thus, is way easier to market. Even the new Samsung Note will feature two sensors. So OP had to choose between a better camera and less revenue or a worse camera and more revenue.
Unfortunately they picked the latter.
How many threads are going to be create just to talk about camera ?
As already said in others threads, people expected a perfect DSLR with 40Mpx and a perfect night quality image. Come on are you serious ? This is marketing people, wake up, think with your brain sometime please.
I did not even read OP, such a waste of time to see an other person complaining about the camera.
We know what your are going to do next. RMA and send back the phone. Nice, change phone if you are not happy, but stop pollute this forum with one nth useless thread. Thanks.

Ok, creating an other topic was maybe useless but... The fact is that at the moment, the camera is very disappointing, to say the least. Especially when the device was marketed as the new camera standard, "clearer photos" etc.
I think nobody was expecting a DSLR camera, but maybe more than the overly washed, grainy or over saturated and sharpened shots that it actually produces. C'mon, I upgraded from an old Nexus 5 and expected a dramatic improvement in the camera quality. I am delighted to say this is not the case.
The big question now is : will these issues be software fixable ?

If I'm good, each iteration of OnePlus device get a better camera with software update.
You are probably right but there are things you can accept when you pay 300$ that you can not accept anymore when you pay 550$. Rising the price also means raising the expectations.
Please will people stop making random rant posts and freaking out?!
The phone has been released for a week now and isn't even globally available yet.
There's been 3 software updates already to fix issues.
Just wait about a month and then if it's still crap you can complain.
The problem is that in many countries, you can freely return you device within 14 days after you purchased it. So waiting one Month with nothing but hopes and wishes is a costly option.

A crap phone is a crap phone. There's nothing to suggest the 5 is anything but a middle tier phone with lots of problems. No excuses from One Plus.

Middle tier...with specs rivalling and surpassing the most expensive phones you can buy.
OK.
Go away.

Why you have to cry in every single thread, over and over again? Return it and buy a better phone.

Nonsense. A fast SOC and lots of RAM doesn't make up for fake promises of a great camera and lies about benchmarks, poor design, little features etc. Give OP credit when they deserve it and heat when they don't. The OP5 is a big let down, they need to sort themselves out.

It's also a week old, are you telling me no other major phone manufacturer has issues when their phones have just been released? There's been plenty of those issues with Samsung, Apple and others.
Even Apple's own depth effect had to have multiple software updates before it worked properly.

Shutter speed seems about average. I had the S10e. I don't notice a huge difference either way, but I'm still playing around with it.. I do wish indoor pics held up better, but that is common with any phone other than the pixel
I kinda wish OnePlus put the money into only one lens instead of three. Have a great single lens, larger sensor and keep it simple and work on the photo processing.

I feel like they have the camera hardware; it's just the processing that needs work. Just look at what the Gcam ports are capable of on OnePlus devices.

If you like the 3xl then when they port the google camera to the OP7Pro you will be really happy I think. It looks like with the HW the OP7Pro has paired with Google camera processing will be killer.

Mind providing few more pics? Something during daylight, and possibly like moving people
Been struggling with with whether to get this or the p30 pro. Might have to go with the p30 pro
I'll post comparison pics to gcam a little later. I think it's just as good as the S10e, though. In good lighting it can compete with any of them, although it has a tendency to blow out the highlights some. Low light is where the others take a bit of an advantage.

I am mainly interested in battery life and camera performance. And camera performance so far looks hit and miss. I have owned almost every OP device. And I don't know I am just not feeling all that excited about this one. To get the battery life is want I will have to dial back all the settings that make this phone stand out. To get great camera performance I am going to have to pray the gcam mod comes out and it's as good as it was on the 6T

There are not many alternatives atm. The S10+ has Knox and a fuse which disables many important features once you unlock it, also you can't undo it.
Huawei has stopped giving codes to unlock the bootloader.
Pixel 3 XL has good camera software, but a small battery, a very ugly notch (personal preference though), old Snapdragon 845 etc.
Am I missing something? A good camera phone which you can unlock easily and which has a decent community?

Things aint the same as they were back in the days with likes of htc desire etc... Basically there were no kids here , now every kid owns the phone

Question New updates to Camera?

Guys, I am planning to get this phone. From the reviews, I have seen about this camera and for the short time I had a look at all the pictures taken from the Vivo X70 Pro (not plus) I am quite impressed. There are a few reviews that pointed out some minor stabilization issues on front camera and other minor issues like the output of image quality at times slipping out.
I am just curious to know from the users about the general opinion on the photographic and video prowess of the phone and had there been any new updates/fixes to the camera software from October 2021 that might have improved the camera even further.
thank you all in advance!
Sany
I would like that there was the possibility of using the gimbal camera in external applications to be able to do stabilized live streaming.

The back camera is top of the line, in my experience better than most out phones out there, if not the best. Front camera is decent in 98% of the situations, it may under perform in some areas like when under direct light etc, but not as bad as people describe it in reviews. Overall, money well spent.

None as for as Funtouch OS is concerned. They have a huge scope to imporve on Software lines like Google Phone. But Vivo is very cautious about using its Camera Beast.
I tried horizontal line stabilization today and was amazed.
Holding the phone horizontally, walking without holding it straight, a stabilized video came out.

Not by a lot, origin os here, but not many things I would like to be changed. Improvements yeah, eventually they will come. But it is currently a beast!
They actually removed a lot of third party support in Ocean OS. No 10bit support, no stable 50fps, only main lens in filmic pro since the update. If you care about Filmic Pro and mcpro24fps Id suggest not to update.
The Vivo Camera is rock stable as ever but it eats A LOT of battery for video. If you use the normal camera app the phone is still a beast.
