Should I root my XZ1 on PIE? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Themes, Apps, and Mods

Hi folks! As we all know XZ1 is not an old phone to get out of warranty today. And rooting (drm fix thing may work but if we ignore it) may void the warranty.
My question is, is there any good mods you use on stock pie rom to have better experience? If you post your "root needed" mods installed below, me and other users can get enough reasons to have root today?
And if you can share the links of mods, people will thank you so much i think ? (working night light should be a good addition for example)

I am also wondering this but I think as xz1 also we lack of developers. At the past years we had many many developers but all of them flew away from Sony

Unfortunately there isn't much right now, i rooted mostly for debloat and install battery saving mod (LKT mod) both things for better battery life and performance. There are a few mods for sound and camera (camera mod is WIP), and a couple of custom roms to try.

@snake218 Is there any losses on unlocking and rooting process?

Based on my experience with sony support; I rooted my xperia x (unlocked bl, drm fix), relocked my bootloader and restored my drm keys. Then I shipped it to sony repair and they accepted it. So I think I might root this one too. Just make sure to backup your keys and store them before sending it to sony.

That camera WIP mode is it any good ? i mean better than stock sony camera or not ?

i am thinking about rooting my xz1 too, only reason i would do that is to install viper4android and make my XZ1 louder both on loudspeakers and on headphones too......my phone is 3 month old so i dont want to loose garantie......dilema this is

if somebody wont to root xz1 he should make TA backup otherwise you loose your drm keys.

Xperia Z1 Root

I'm corrently on contract with my Z1, and I want to know from you guy's if it is worth it for me to root the phone, I'm only looking for overall a better performance on the phone, and to use GLTools so I can enable certain settings and hacking in games.

From my point of view a phone without root is like a sports car with locked doors . Now , from my knowledge and experience you can unroot a device by flashing (easy) the stock rom. When i updated (for example) from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 it went to my default rom with no root . The ideea is that i like the customization , it is easy to root so yeah it is worth it (from my point of view) .
The thing is that if you crash it and cannot unroot the device you cannot take it to repair , only if you pay for it .
I have not unlocked the bootloader because i find it risky for a noob like me but rooting is very easy (actually 2 clicks away) and with Xposed Framework you get the customization with little to no risk !
So for me root gets :good:
Here is what i used to root my Z1 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784900

Enabling update center again?

Well I noticed that after flashing my xperia z1 to lp that the built in update center no longer works, it just always days updated. Even when new so versions come out it still different find them.
As of now I have the z5 system apps installed. I'm not sure that hinders anything but yea. I like back on kk when it said there's a new version of this so out.

[Help requested] Options for Root and Xposed on XZ1C

Just ordered my XZ1C and looking forward to joining this community!
I'm looking to root and install systemless xposed (Magisk) on the XZ1C while keeping camera functionality equivalent to stock quality. It would be great if the solution allows me to keep current with new ROM versions (primarily for security updates). What is less important:
- Ok with either stock or custom ROMs (access to ongoing security updates most important)
- Know that DRM keys will be gone forever (but as long as camera functionality still there, that's fine)
- Ok with using any camera app (stock, gcam, etc.) as long as it retains quality similar to stock
After trawling through this and the XZ1 forum, I believe there are 3 options to achieve what I need (root and xposed), and would like advice from the community on pros/cons of each of the following:
1. Custom ROM with DRM fix included: Unlock bootloader, install TWRP, install custom ROM which comes with DRM fix (e.g. @modpunk 's LineageOS, @russel5 's RR or AOSP)
2. @janjan 's kernel: Unlock bootloader, update to latest compatible stock firmware using flashtool, install janjan's DRM fix kernel
3. Xperifix: "automated" black-box solution and fingers crossed that it works
Any recommendations on which option would be best for me given my objectives? Thanks!
You can use my stock mod. Ddmfix included, superuser mod, deodexed, on the last page of thread you can find fix for xposed

russel5's rom is pretty amazing, full of features and falls into number 1 on your list.
2 and 3 refrence stock roms with either a fixed kernel or automated flashing of all the files you need.
The stock camera is best and as much as I am tempted by rr, I don't think it beats stock camera software for pictures. So I'd say a lot of your decision has to do with how much you like taking pictures?
The stock firmware from April .75 is the last firmware that works with Xposed and one of your problems will be finding a copy of that to flash and downgrade your new arrival.
You might need to get janjan's old (.75) kernel from github as he is only showing the latest 16.20 on his thread.
I get moaned at for promoting Xperiafix because it's paid software, but it's a one stop shop, it does everything and it's so easy. It has worked smoothly every time I've used it
Depending on your skillset and how many files you want to find and flash Vs one program.

Thanks!
- so seems like between Xposed and having the latest security updates, I have to choose one of the two. Or might there be a workaround for Xposed on the 16.20 stock rom?
- with xperifix, can one achieve Xposed? (Whether on latest or downgraded rom?)
- purchased this phone partly for the camera, so I will go with stock rom if that has the best quality. Does stock rom also have a portrait or lens blur mode similar to google cam?

As far as I'm aware there's no way a stock rom 16.20 will work with Xposed. There are several custom roms that are updated to 16.20, but still pull historical parts of the framework with them to make Xposed work.
Xperiaifx will work on .75 firmware. It will install TWRP, Magisk and the fix. Once you have Magisk on it you can install the Xposed framework module (SDK26)
The Sony camera has many addons, I don't know about portrait.
Google camera works on russel5's rr, but again the quality isn't up to stock.
Having been through the pollava of unlocking and rooting my phone, I'd say the advantages don't outweigh the effort and problems. Every time there's an update to the firmware, which is quite often with Sony, you have to wait and hope some nice developer is going to make the files you need to keep up to date. Then go through a long proccess with downloading the new firmware with Xperiafirm, then flashing with Newflasher and then whatever files you need to reflash from the developer. You'll never get OTA updates again. Having a rooted phone is a pain in the neck.

Thats not right, I use now firmware 16.20 with janjans kernel and russel5's xposed fix (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77778634&postcount=47) it works, and I'm very happy with it. Thanks to janjan and russel5 for his xposed fix (and mod)

hi @d_fens. how did you go about installing this system less xposed fix on your stock oreo 16.20? should i do the following:
1. stock oreo 16.20
2. flash magisk via twrp.
3. boot into phone and copy xposed fix into /system/framework/
4. then flash systemless xposed via twrp?
thanks

i used janjan's mod to get systemless root on stock. with this you are able to update using newflasher all the latest roms with security updates provided by Sony
you don't have to choose between xposed and the latest security updates:
for xposed, i've tried both Taichi Magisk (taichi.cool) and Virtual Xposed (also via Magisk). both work fine but Taichi is a smoother implementation (only activates xposed for those apps that you whitelist). it is however not open source (yet), though this was not a concern for me. also, it supports not all xposed apps but a subset
the xposed modules that i absolutely needed to have are all working on Taichi: Xposed Edge, CorePatch, AppContext, WeXposed, God Mode

Importing xz2 camera to xz1

Hello,
since xz2 and xz1 have same camera sensor (imx400) and xz2 makes clearly better pictures, i wonder if it is possible to get the xz2 camera software to the xz1, i mean if it is the same sensor shouldn't it be just a software problem that the xz1 is so crapy compared to xz2?

There is already a XZ3 camera port, reporting improved performance with low light and frame rate, but I haven't tried it so I don't know if it works.

Didn't try yet, i have to root but this could cause the DRM Keys to get lost, they are important for the camera, and the DRM Backup is rather complicated. I guess i will wait for Android PIE and then root and flash the XZ3 camera. Other users say its working thougt, if you do it right! You can read this Thread for more that "Didgesteve" showed me, to gain some more infos: https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/mod-xperia-xz2-camera-port-xperia-xzs-t3771889
I would say backing up the DRM keys was a piece of cake compared to trying to get the camera mod working. At least j4nn has written clear instructions how to do it.
The camera mod instructions are so fuzzy that it seems to be impossible to get it working with the mentions of "superuser mod" or "patched services.jar", as the mentioned superuser mod is only for XZ, not XZ1C, and there's no mention about how to patch your own services.jar. I tried smali patcher already but it requires the file to be "deodexed", whatever that means etc.
I managed to install that mod. (Look post number #333) Lets say dont expect big changes.

Does the UI change when you install the mod?
Also did you do anything about the mentioned superuser mod or patched services.jar to get it working?
Did you delete the whole SemcCameraUI and CameraCommon folders or just the arm64 inside?
The ui didn't changed. And i didn't do any of super user mod and service jar thing.. But i did have a bug with video enchants force closing at setting. Maybe i didn't get the Mod fully working that's why i didn't get the effect. But yes i deleted whole folders.

Really? Oh man :crying: Sony should be ashamed not giving us the same quality with cam, just because they want us to buy the xz2c
To hohosanta: If the UI does not change, you did something wrong, therefore you don't have the better quality. At least this is what i read in the post, that the UI has to be the new one and if you do it right the quality is really better. Hope so.
It's hard to say how different the ui in xz3 is compared to xz1c in Pie as I haven't seen the xz3.
But anyway, maybe I'll try again to patch that services.jar and then try the mod as a magisk module (it seemed to install when I just used the oreo magisk module config files with the system folder from the Pie v2 zip, but trying to start the camera gives an unspecified error) if I just find a working way to do the patching. It might be that the apk signatures don't match and that's why it doesn't start. @hohosanta said that he tried to copy the files manually but it gave the same error as I got with the magisk module.
Used Smali patcher to patch services.jar, but I still get the same error with the camera mod. Doesn't seem to work...

How to start ?

Hi guys,
I'll receive my XZ2C next week, and I wonder how to start with it.
Basically I would like to root and unbloat (I'm a bit used to root/flash and that kind of stuff). I saw that some functions are lost when unlocking bootloader, so how to start right to not loose theses functions ?
Thanks !

You can't avoid the loosing of these functions.
You'll loose Sony backup&restore, Sony club account access, PlayStation Bluetooth controller support, video color manipulation by Sony (but on PIE there is a normal pie function too, which still works.)
And upgrade your phone to the newest PIE firmware before unlocking.
And look into the twrp thread for rooting.
In the xz2 ROM section is a thread to kill bloat.
But maybe the bloat killer is too aggressive.
Anyway you can flash again a new firmware via xperifirm and newflasher.(no OTA update).
And existenze is a good stock firmware mod and brings you at least the stock firmware OTA notification back.

Nice, we also have custom ROMs and the SODP based stuff is a separate development by Sony employees without the DRM stuff.
Means you get camera RAW support and kernel upgrades.
(Camera is still work in progress)
