(Guide) Upgrade from Oreo to Pie/One UI (Snapdragon/SM-N960, SM-N960U1, SM-N960W) - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Let me start off by stating that this is by no means my tutorial, all information was gathered from this community and organized into, hopefully, a helpful tut. Thank you to Max Weinbach, who originally posted this tutorial - due to issues with the file hosting server, that page hasn't been updated in a bit. Hopefully this will help in the meantime... And a big thank you to Venom0642 for hosting these files!
NO ROOT!!!
MUST BE SNAPDRAGON VARIANT (SM-N960, SM-N960U1, SM-N960W)
Optional: This will wipe the data on your phone. Use SmartSwitch to backup your phones data to your computer
Step 1: Download the 3 Items listed below (AT&T N960USQS1ARJA, Odin3, N960USQS1ARJA-U1CSA7)

Step 2: Copy or Move the "N960USQS1ARJA-U1CSA7.zip" file to your SD card and insert SD card into your Note 9 - If you do not have an SD card you can use ADB sideload to flash this .zip later in the process but I will not be going into much detail on this option. Skip this step if this is you and I will let you know when to use adb later on
Step 3: Unzip the "AT&T_N960USQS1ARJA" folder - Notice that you will have 5 files within this folder, we will only be using the 4 that begin with BL, AP, CP, and CSC
Step 4: Unzip the "Odin3_v3.13.1_3B_PatcheD" folder and launch the Odin3 executable
Step 5: Within Odin, click on the "BL" box and navigate to your "AT&T_N960USQS1ARJA" folder and select the corresponding file that beings with "BL". Do the same thing for the AP, CP and CSC fields within Odin, you can leave USERDATA empty - The BL, AP, CP, and CSC fields within Odin should now be populated with the "AT&T_N960USQS1ARJA" files
Step 6: Power down your phone. Once it is off, enter Odin mode by: holding Power button + Volume Down + Bixby button - Your phone may prompt you asking if you want to download a custom OS, press the Volume Up button to continue.
Step 7: Plug your Note 9 into your computer - If Odin is communicating with your phone, on the left hand side of the screen (odin on your computer), under "Log", you should see something like "Added!!"
Step 8: Hit "Start" within Odin - Your phone will now flash to N960USQS1ARJA and will automatically reboot into recovery mode when it is done. This will take a few minutes!
Step 9: You should now be in recovery mode. If you are not, power down your phone and boot into recovery by holding Power button + Volume Up + Bixby button. Use the volume keys to highlight "Wipe data/factory reset" , use the Power button to select it and select "Yes" to continue. - After the wipe completes, you will be brought back to the main menu of Recovery Mode
Step 10: Use the volume keys to highlight “apply update from SD card” and select it with the power key - If you do not have an SD card, this is where you would select "apply update from adb", open a command prompt/terminal on your computer and type: adb sideload <file location of N960USQS1ARJA-U1CSA7.zip>
Step 11: Now find the N960USQS1ARJA-U1CSA7.zip file that you put onto your SD card earlier by using the volume buttons to navigate and power button to select it - Your phone will now flash to N960USQU1CSA7 (Pie/OneUI) and will boot up normally when it is finished. This will take a few minutes!
Step 12: You are now on Android Pie. Walk through the normal startup menus and then use SmartSwitch to restore your data. Done!
Hope this helps a few people! I will try to keep this thread up to date with current builds as Venom0642 makes them available

I have a Snapdragon 845 U1 Unlocked version, using firmware.science it appears that I can upgrade directly to the Unlocked bloatfree firmware. Using your method I'll be upgrading to ATT version with ATT bloat. Is my understanding correct?

I do not know anything about the firmware science route, you would need someone else to help you there. But this version will have at&t bloat, you will have to disable the handful of apps they preload so you don't have to deal with them

Nice job on the tutorial!! I have been doing the Z beta builds, but have gone back to Oreo to wait for the official release!! Hopefully within the next week... but your guide here is very easy to understand and I'm sure it will help alot of people!!

C builds add full support for carrier features. With T-Mobile, you get Advanced Messaging and a few other things I can't remember now. Samsung Pay works on all beta builds, just not Google Pay.

Ok gotcha, so this latest c build is still a beta? If not Will there be a path to just flash zip on the c builds when the official pie release comes out?

I don't think so, as far as I know you can't crossflash firmwares from different variants (in this Case N960U or N960U1 to N9600 or vice versa).
But I'm on the same boat, mine is also N9600 and eagerly waiting for any sign of Pie.
Have you seen the release notes for Pie in the members app? Make no sense to me.

One question, if I'm already on the N96OUSQS1ARJA build can I skip that part and go straight to the PIE upgrade? Or is there any reason I should install ARJA version your showing?
TIA

I saw the release notes now and they said march only

My release notes only contain a mess... no mention of note 9, only low or mid tier devices listed with date 28th of February.

I'm using Samsung Note 9 N600 dual SIM. Can I update using this method.

i followed the same process to install the latest version of TWRP for the Note 7 and flash the latest version of SR1-SuperSU-v2.82-SR1-20170608224931.zip. that's how i rooted my 935K. so far, this process still works with the latest AQG6 release which is available from updato.com. NOTE: if you flash the full OEM ROM via Odin, be sure to backup your internal storage; i had to format data after flashing the OEM ROM.

Good to know. Do we still have adhell? I expect Google will want to see that app spiked ASAP. Also, whether you update OTA or flash the full firmware, you will need to format data to get root. I long ago routined this process so that it takes about an hour all told.

correct, the format data requirement is a bit of a pain; however, i keep very little important "stuff" on internal storage and back up my external and internal storage once a week.
Have updated by flashing stock to clear Knox first. Adhell still works. Just as well: cannot install TWRP, neither Exynos variant. Not such a pain while adhell keeps ads out and allows me disable copious junk. Still, am I doing something wrong? Odin installs always a success (four times so far). Any other reports?
Perhaps we need a device specific variant now...

what do mean by flashing stock to clear Knox first? and you flashed build N935KKKU3AQG6? i had no problem flashing twrp-3.1.1-0-gracelte.img.tar (not the Korean version twrp-3.1.1-0-graceltekor.img.tar) using Odin 3.12. reboot to Download mode and be sure to untick Auto reboot. next load twrp-3.1.1-0-gracelte.img.tar to the AP slot, flash and when complete, reboot to recovery. my method is to hold the down-volume and power key until the phone turns off, then press and hold the up-volume key, the power key and the the home key until the device boots to TWRP.

1. Probably clumsily expressed. I flashed the original AQFE stock to get out of root then updated that. I was dloading the AQG6 firmware at that time but rather than wait (when I could have flashed that instead) I went ahead.
2. Usually I flash TWRP, allow the restart, close down and reboot into recovery-TWRP. Didn't work this time - is this a significant change? Followed your method, which worked - except perhaps to underline that the device should remain connected to the PC while closing it down (otherwise it will automatically reboot). Thanks for taking the trouble to give detailed instructions.

Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing community here, starting from the ever so patient moderators, up to the brave people who let me experiment on their machines to get the OTA links during this beta program (both S9, S9+ and even Note 9). A very special thanks goes out of course to the great @Wishmasterflo who was the first one to let me mess around with multiple computers he owns until we got it just right and established a certain solution to give you guys all the updates almost instantly. Kudos to him, and to all you who in the course of the last few months came here to help out other people!
We may convert this thread to a general S9 Pie discussion if it's okay with the mods, now that the beta is over.
Thank you all, and enjoy the great update Samsung blessed us with this Christmas!

Instructions:
SD card method
Download the necessary update.zip(s) for your device according to your current software version.
Step 1
Copy the update.zip file to your SD card.
Step 2
Reboot the device into Recovery mode. (Turn off the phone, then Vol Up + Bixby + Power button)
Step 3
Go to apply update from SD card.
Step 4
Install the update, and be patient.
Many people have reported that on ZRKA, they're unable to apply new updates from SD because of SD card mounting errors.
First try formatting your card on your phone, and try again. If that fails, use adb sideloading.
Edit: The most effective way I came across for this issue is to actually use a PC (or a phone utility) to format the SD Card with FAT32, then try the update.
ADB Sideloading
Download the necessary update.zip(s) for your device according to your current software version.
Step 1
Download the latest ADB ZIP file (Windows), then extract it to C:\adb
Step 2
Download and install adb drivers.
Step 3
Copy the update.zip file to C:\adb (or wherever your adb.exe file is)
Step 4
Put your phone in recovery mode and select Apply update from ADB, then connect it to your PC
Step 5
Wait until your PC installs the drivers, if you're doing this for the first time.
Step 6
Open command prompt, navigate to C:\adb (or wherever your adb.exe and update.zip is)
Step 7
Issue the following command: adb devices
If you can see a device in 'sideload' mode, you can proceed to step 8, otherwise you may have some troubleshooting to do.
Step 8
Issue the following command: adb sideload update.zip
Step 9
Be patient, and enjoy your update.
NOTE: You can't go directly from BRJ6 to the latest update, you have to start with ZRKA and apply them one by one.
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO PERFORM A FACTORY RESET IF YOU'RE UPDATING FROM BRJ6 (Basically after a main system version upgrade). Otherwise its not necessary, but for
the most optimal performance and battery life, it is advised.

If you unroot and flash stock FW by odin then you will receive OTA again.

How to get the Beta "Update" on your Note 9 U1.

So I bought my note 9 three weeks ago, it was ATT carrier branded, since I don't need/like any carrier bloat, I just flashed the unlocked firmware to it, until today its working with no problems at all.
So today I learned that the One UI beta came out, I log on my Samsung+ app I got the banner and hit register but nothing... it will simply send me back to the start, probably because i'm offshore who knows. well I started looking around tried with a VPN, tried spoofing my location, clear cache, clear data ( did this multiple times ) but it will simply not let me join the beta.
So I keep on looking and I find this website https://firmware.science/ it will allow you to download the OTA file and flash it using recovery mode!
Sure I wont get the otas automatically on my phone, but I can simply download then again and flash then as they come out.
I hope this helps anyone like that just wanted to install the latest software!
Note!:
This doesn't mean that your are part of the beta, but means that you will have the beta software on your phone!

Does doing that wipe my device? Or do I get to keep my stuff?
I wanted to add this for anyone who kept tapping the register button but was simply returned to the banner like nothing happened.
If this is happening and you dont get a toast msg saying "thank you for your support of the One UI Beta" and no OTA follows, try deleting the (beta) Samsung + app data, rebooting and try again.
I tried all day before doing this and got the OTA 5 mins after wiping app data.

If this is happening and you dont get a toast msg saying "thank you for your support of the One UI Beta" and no OTA follows, try deleting the (beta) Samsung + app data, rebooting and try again.
I tried all day before doing this and got the OTA 5 mins after wiping app data.

Tried everything, to be honest I was just sure that the Samsung+ app would check where you are in the world and if your not on the US it will simply not let you join the beta, the method above worked flawlessly for me!, I'm running One UI at the moment with the dark theme and its awesome!

Keep in mind that this Beta Update its just for the unlocked firmware, if you want to flash the update you need to first flash this firmware: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-note9/SM-N960U1/XAA/download/N960U1UES1ARJ9/244752/
After that you will be able to flash the Beta Update

Yes, I did. No data loss.
I flashed the same zrkp from firmware. Science on my us unlocked note 9 with arj9 firmware. It did a full factory reset. I would have done so anyway as I always do with major updates.
Working flawlessly so far.
Edit: 2 exceptions found. Themes are not working and cannot connect to my gear s3. Android wear watch works as expected.
Question what happens when you go into settings an click on Software update does it do anything..Just curious..I have the ATT variant an I'm planning on flashing the Unlocked Firmware..

I would not know, I guess we need to wait until beta 2 update and see, probably won't be getting it and we will need to download the new OTA and flash again on recovery

Ok. First of all. Green and gold till I'm dead and cold.
Second of all, if you flash the U1 firmware and sign up for the beta, then you'll get OTAs automatically through settings.
If you flash the U1 firmware and can't get into the beta program, you can download the update.zip from firmware.science. You will have the official beta build, but you won't get updates through settings, because you aren't part of the beta program.
When I run Odin soon as I goto add the AP file Odin freezes an says not responding..I'm useing Windows 10 on my laptop..Any ideas??Also I have put the correct files in odin but it fails Everytime.. That is normal. Just wait. It will eventually load the AP file. If you're flashing the U1 firmware, there is no Userdata file, so you don't use that slot.
Make sure you are using the modified version of ODIN 3.13.1 and run it as an administrator. There are links to it on XDA. Or if you go to the main beta thread there's links to it in the thread.
Just put the files in their respective slots. BL in BL, AP in AP, etc...
CSC_OYN performs a factory reset. HOME_CSC does not wipe the phone. I always use CSC_OYN when switching from carrier firmware to U1 firmware or vice versa, but it's up to you.
After everything is all loaded up in ODIN, put your phone in download mode. Power off. Then hold power, Bixby, and volume down button all at the same time until it boots to a blue-green screen. Then press volume up to continue.
Plug your phone into your computer and hit start. Then sit back and wait. This will take a while.
That's all the steps. If you have any issues, I encourage you to use the search bar on the forum. These steps and solutions to any issues you may run into have been posted many times in several threads. The search bar is your friend and should always be the first thing you do before posting questions.

I'm assuming since I installed the Firmware then the Beta One Samsung + app won't open..then if I click on the Samsung Members app it says Beta but everything i click on say I'm not registered for the Beta..is that because I manually install the Beta update file..So basically Everytime a new beta version comes out I'm going to have to manually install it..

One thing I have noticed on the new Unlocked version of the Firmware an being on the Beta software is that the Stereo speakers on the phone aren't as loud as they were when I was running the ATT version Firmware..Any ideas..

As far as speaker loudness I have no idea.

Not getting OTA updates after forcing an update zip

Hey! I was a bit impatient with my Note 9 when Pie started rolling out. I found a zip that I installed through the recovery mode which gave me Pie. Now my otherwise unmodded, non-rooted Note 9 isn't getting updates anymore.
Find attached my software info.
Any help?

So my only option is to revert back to stock and reinstall my phone?
I've got the same problem. Is there any less painful way to fix this? I thought the Zip file was the T Mobile pre release and not suppose to interfere with future updates.

Use samfirm to acquire the latest firmware intended for your Note9's CSC.
You can get your active from:
Settings >> About phone >> Software Information >> Service provider SW ver
You only need to input 2 info on samfirm tool:
1. Model: SM-N960U
2. Region: (your CSC)
3. Put a check mark on "Auto"
4. Put a check mark on "Decrypt automatically"
5. Click "Check Update"
The tool should give you the latest firmware for your device.
Download that firmware and Odin Flash to your device.
That should fix your OTA update.

How To Guide Instructions to Install One UI 4 Beta on any S21 device (Exynos+Snapdragon)

First of all, as you all know - you are responsible for anything that you do to your device, neither me nor anyone helping you are responsible for it. Of course this generous community will help you through if anything unexpected happens.
and just to make sure that you're not an idiot, this is for SAMSUNG phones only and only for S21 Series. YOU CAN TRY THIS METHOD ON OTHER SAMSUNG DEVICE BUT YOU WILL NEED UPDATE FILE OF ONE UI BETA 4 FOR THE DEVICE YOU TRYING TO FLASH
-- The process I am explaining and/or describing here is tested by me and it works 100%. I have Canadian S21ultra which is not part of the beta program, I tried to install beta update on Canadian firmware but it failed so I tried this method and I have successfully installed ONE UI 4 Beta and everything works. This should work with S21/S21+
This is a few steps process so read carefully through each and every step, I am gonna try to keep this as easy and noob friendly as possible, if you have any questions feel free to ask.
-- This process will take place in 4 parts so it doesn't get confusing, it needs to go in chronological order.
Step 1 : Download needed files and tools for your device
Step 2 : Backup your data
Step 3 : Flash current stable firmware for your device family either exynos or snapdragon via ODIN
Step 4 : Install One UI 4 Beta 1
Step 1 : Download needed files and tools
1. ODIN tool to flash the firmware (Search xda/Google for this)2. SDK Platform-tools from here SDK Platform-tools - once downloaded, extract files3. CURRENT stock firmware of the device (One UI 3.1) - This is the latest One UI 3.1 firmware from the country getting beta updates.- For Example : If you are installing UK One UI beta, Download Latest Stable One UI 3.1 firmware from UK which is compatible for your device (Please make sure it is the same processer as your current device, if you have exynos S21 device, download exynos and if you have snapdragon version download snapdragon one) -- you can download it from Galaxy Firmware Website or website or source of your choice.- Extract Firmware zip.4. Beta Update zip file - Copy this file in Platform-tools folder and rename it to update.zip if needed.Snapdragon Version : Click HereExynos Version : Click HereStep 2 : Backup your data (Recommended but not necessary)
1. Samsung smart switch for Computer -- From Here2. Samsung Cloud Backup - from settings of your device.3. Google Backup - from settings of your device.Step 3 : Flash Current stable firmware corresponding of your device family either exynos or snapdragon via ODIN - This step will wipe all the data on your phone.
1. Open ODIN executable file (i.e. exe)2. Connect your phone in download mode to the computer via USB cable (Turn off your phone, while pressing volume up+down button, plug in the USB Cable to your computer, you will see teal screen with some disclaimers on your phone, press volume up)3. Click on BL on ODIN screen and navigate to the folder where you extracted firmware from step 1, click on file name starting with BL_xxx.tar.md5, wait for it to populate in ODIN. Repeat process with AP, CP and CSC (NOT HOME_CSC) in ODIN (AP will take a lot of time to load so grab a coffee/bear/Tea or whatever you like while that processes).4. Click start and wait for that to be finished5. You will see success in ODIN and your device will reboot to the system6. Turn off your device by pressing power button once its booted.Step 4 : Install One UI Beta 1 update
1. Boot your phone into recovery by continue pressing power and volume up button, once you see the samsung logo release both buttons.2. Select Install update from adb3. Open platform-tools on your Computer, hold shift and right click - select open command prompt here.4. write adb sideload update.zip5. Wait till the process finished.6. Power On your phone by pressing power buttons and your device should boot into One UI 4 Beta.7. Follow on-screen instruction to set-up your phone.

Thank you for the helpful instructions. But , as you already know, a noob question is a must . I own a Hong Kong version of the S21 ultra which is SM-N9980 , snapdragon of course. Can I flash a US or UK firmware that has a different model number in order for me to sideload the One UI 4.0 ?
Thank you for your patience.

Guessing it's a snapdragon processor, latest US 3.1 firmware (G998U1) one would be your best bet.
But I guess it has been said they're not compatible with each other!
Different build number versions conflicts!

It's not a guide that is needed, but the download links of the Exynos variants haha.
That's the real problem here..
Does this change available bands? I have a Canadian S21U as well on Telus but wondering if it changes bands to the UK.

Sorry I saw in your example the UK one was mentioned but did not realize that they only had Exynos.
Which firmware did you flash on yours to get it to work? US T-Mobile? And would that also change which bands are available (since I assume it also flashes a different baseband)?

VZW variant from US, and I think most of the network bands are same for US and Canada. So you won't have any problem with network. P.S. I am with Telus too and everything works
