Revert One UI recents mess? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hello.
I managed to flash Pie onto a Note 9 thanks to another thread in this forum. All is well except I'm horribly aggrieved by the new horizontal recents screen. To make things worse, Good Lock is seemingly not yet compatible with Pie so I don't have any control over this new UI.
Any one else feel the same? Known way to change this?
Thanks!

Sadly no, but can recommend to try two things:
1) turn of recent apps recommendation in the recents options - it causes lag and the recents menu will be atleast smoother and cleaner.
2) you can try to turn on the "reduce animation" from settings - advanced. This changes the recents behaviour and when you swipe it will be "by one" and not continuous scroll, try it and device generally if you like the animations.
From there it's waiting for good lock for pie or going custom ROM, I fear.

Thanks. Yeah found those two settings.
Figure you are right and we have to wait. Oh well.

Getting annoyed by the exact same things. At the moment no solution for that. Unless we downgrade to Oreo but than will the security updates will continue to come?

Unhelpful.
Nowhere does it say Good Lock is incompatible.

Think this way. With new recent arrangement the user can see full card and no more only half. Agree? In my opinion it's more useful right now, It's question of time and i'm sure you'll like it

Perhaps it's just muscle memory but what gets me is there's no inertia so you can't just fling through apps as you used to be able to. Oh well.

The hideous icons and loss of GoodLock are rubbing me the wrong way. I used Routines in GoodLock for a handful of functions that made things a lot easier. Hopefully the GoodLock upgrade comes soon, if not I am seriously considering going back to Oreo, there is nothing in Pie that is blowing me away as I find even the gesture navigation slower/more tedious than the standard nav bar.

Get used to less features in your "new" update. I can live with it but it is annoying that they are limiting your options in the name of what? Becoming nice and simple like an iPhone? O would buy an iPhone if I wanted less features [emoji3]

Quick settings effing sucks

Google dropped the ball on this one. First, no gps button. Second, the buttons that do exist only take you to a menu (ie, the wifi menu) from where you can actually turn things on or off. Also, apparently no ability to customize whats in the quick settings.
With all the great implementations of quick settings available in both custom roms and widgets, google had a lot of great ideas from which it could have modeled its own quick settings, but somehow it managed to put out this worthless piece of garbage. I think most people will have to keep using widgetsoid or notification toggle and google's quick setting will almost never be used. What a disgrace.

The kind of people who want to badly customize it, is also the kind of people who do not need settings to do it.
I'm fine with it, if anything it'll probably only take the CM team a few minutes to change the functionality of it.

I agree. If anything, it gives a new platform/base for CM or other developers to build upon and a pretty spiffy one at that. I think it's a great first release for a feature. Just because you can see the future of it in current roms or inherently tell where it's going doesn't mean it shouldn't be a welcomed improvement. Could they have made it better? Of course, but that's not a reason to overreact and call it a "disgrace".
Yeah, I don't know what they're thinking. The buttons should obviously be toggles for quickly turning things on and off, not shortcuts to various settings menus. That's what the regular settings button in the notification shade is for. I was really excited when I first heard about this feature, since I expected Google to do the logical thing and put a bunch of useful toggles in there, but what they've ended up doing seems pretty pointless to me.

A great first release? I think it's a horrid first release. It takes as many clicks to turn wifi on or off in this implementation as it does under the current ics or jelly bean 4.1 without the so-called quick settings. Moreover, this is hardly a new feature. It has been around in roms and widgets literally for years. People want one-touch access to the most commonly used settings, and this so-called quick settings fails to provide that. And who the heck made the decision not to put gps in there?
Even as a first release, Google should have surveyed what is currently out there and tried to make its implementation at least as useful. I think it utterly failed. If you don't, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Thank you... I am not sure how anyone could disagree. Yeah, the two fingers to swipe down is cool, and maybe people think it looks nifty, but functionality is nearly nonexistent. And isn't functionality what android users demand first and foremost? If I want a beautiful but useless user interface, I'll look to apple.

Do like me, ignore them and hope CM will keep what they are doing best...
I liked the idea of swiping twice to bring a second notification shade down. But yeah, them just linking to settings pages sucks a little. The ideal setting is to tap to toggle or hold to dive in and change settings in detail.
Ever since I found about about most settings just directing you to the appropriate settings menu, I was also disappointed.
The only proper toggle I think there is brightness, it brings up a little popup in the middle of the screen with a slider.
google's probably going to update it soon
Keep your opinions in here
Google ******* fails again...

How Google screwed up quick settings ...

So, quick toggles for WiFi, Bluetooth, data... Most manufacturers have had them for YEARS : Samsung, HTC, LG and now Google finally decides to include them in stock Android but it seems like a half baked effort
They're not really quick toggles, more like shortcuts, instead of turning WiFi on you're redirected to the WiFi settings, the same happens with Bluetooth and the rest of the pack, also what is the purpose of having my picture on quick settings? Maybe on the tablets where you have multiple user support but on the phone?
Also the toggles are not customizable, do you guy enjoy this toggles?
I think they have a lot of potential but until android 5 arrives I hope cm 10.1 or aokp takes care of this broken toggles

It could be useful to access settings if you need, for example, to switch WiFi quickly. I found using a toggle widget that came with it - pretty useful.
I do like the layout and two finger swipe method. If they were toggles and not shortcuts then I'd prefer it to the typical layout with touchwiz/sense. I'm sure a custom rom in the future will change this .

I actually really like them. I think they can definitely be improved, but every feature starts somewhere, right? I use the WiFi shortcut frequently to get into the settings rather than just toggle. The battery shortcut is really useful too I think. Maybe in later versions we can customize them but I think its a great starting point.
And no, I don't know what the self contact card is good for yet. Maybe someone can figure out a use! =P

I would have preferred they were actual toggles but its still an improvement over the way it was before: nothing. Lol

totally agree. maybe were spoiled by the awesomeness of CM toggles. Wish they were click - easy on and off, hold- go into settings.
I know molesarecoming from the paranoid android thread for the Galaxy Nexus said they turned the quick settings into toggles, but I don't have a Gnex to test it on and he quickly redacted the build because it was to buggy. So as others said, I'm sure it'll be one of the first features in most custom Roms.

I prefer toggles. It would be nice if a short press toggled and a long press was the shortcut though.

Quick settings are now working as toggles on my n7 thanks to paranoid android(2.99).

My main beef about the toggles is the inconsistency between phone and tablet. Two fingers for a phone but a swipe on the right side of the screen for tablets.
So many times I've had to catch myself when going from N4 to N7.
They've pushed the hybrid UI on to the tablets for the sake of consistency but then they do something like this.
I happen to enjoy these toggles very much.

these are the best fricking toggles that exist on planet earth, you just dont know it yet. they created clever, extendable toggles that can be anything. a developer can put them into toggle/longpress-settings mode easily, aaronpoweruser's already done it - but rather think of how they will evolve. im blown away by the fact that some of them are intelligent, that is - they are added automatically when they are relevant (timer, alarm, gps, etc.). its such a cool idea, combine that with API support and you'll not only unclutter an abused notification tray but you'll also make room for alot of possibilities. and my goodness they look absolutely stunning.
never quite understood whats the big deal about cm's toggles. they are just a bunch of dead images chained together. i see nothing in there, but good that google took inspiration from that and brought it a step further - although the first implementation is sure not finished as we all can see.
I agree, hopefully aokp makes a rom soon .
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Tap/hold Toggle/Visit would be the better implementation but it's a good beginning.
What I don't like it's the way of switching between notifications and settings on the phones. The switching mode on the tablets is much better and I want to have it on the phones to.
I can't remember that I've ever used my phone with two hands, so the two finger method isn't a real solution for me.
Pull down left, enter notifications
Pull down right, enter quick- settings
(Like on the tablets)That would be great!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Agree with the OP completely. Sad thing is, Google had dozens of examples of GOOD quick settings toggles to look at and copy, yet it somehow managed to produce this POS quick settings menu. Custom ROMs and widgets have had superior quick settings options literally for years. How Google managed to screw this one up is beyond me. Disgraceful.

Navigation Ring, Quick Setting and Ribbon

Hi,
I have the AT&T model, stock build 4.2.2 before the camera patch.
There is a navigation ring (swipe from nav bar). The single entry is Google Now. I can't find any way to change it.
There is no ribbon.
Quick setting is there. However, I can't change it (add or remove).
I've gone through the settings but could not find anything. I am probably missing something really obvious.
Can anyone point me to the right direction?
Thanks
You can't change those on stock.

Is there an app can change some of them (the first annoying is goolge now) without rooting?

Actually, Widgetsoid appears to be better.
The only missing piece now is how to change the navigation ring. Minimally, I want to disable it!

DPI Problems and unlocked bootloader annoying screen

I tried using easy dpi changer and texdroider and no matter what DPI i change to, my screen gets no effect. only apps and everything but my home screens. is there a way that my home screens could get smaller so i can add more icons. i used to do it this way on my nexus 5
Also, i had a question about the nagging screen after unlocking my bootloader. i tried searching but i see there is no work around yet. does this thing annoy guys as much as me? lol

The news (I looked into it) isn't that great. It's a part of the bootloader code itself, lives in a file called boot.c (somewhere along this path $source/bootable/bootloader/../../*/boot.c) and although it "could" be changed inside the file, there are many checks in that file, so it's not trivial. Then a full compile of the ROM (or at least the bootloader since it's a "bootable" ) which for me, is a lengthy process, and you have a dodgy bootloader that could easily put an end to your booting days (for awhile), so it's not clear to me that this is worthwhile unless you're putting out a custom ROM, give a damn, and want to make that part of the upkeep for your ROM.
I figure that when AOSP ROMs show up, (I think it took over 2 months after oneplus 3 came out for cm13 to come along), then that would be a good time to rethink it. I've hit the point where I just do as the message says and skip it by hitting the power button once. ;
I ended up somehow making my screen smaller but had to change DPI to 400. Anything less and it wouldn't work. I prefer 360 but 400 not bad on 5.5" screen.
Yea I just click the power button until it boots lol.
Can't wait for a nougat release for the 3T. I'm anxious for it.

It might be worth asking anyone coming along to do ROM development in the near future if they wouldn't mind modifying that file I mentioned, I think ./bootable/bootloader/*/*/boot.c to dump the text & the 5 second delay. If you're rolling your own, it's not a big deal. I'd also go along with waiting for nougat. I can't really see anyone starting development (aside from the one or two that are already out there) prior to nougat. There is a 3t 14.1 Cm in the works, but not sure when it'll show up here in the dev section.
In You want more icons on Homescreen, just take a different launcher.. For example Nova
Just a quick reminder about the bootloader: It is closed source (although based on the open source base you see in your rom tree), managed and singed by OnePlus so only they can change it. It also is not built when you build a rom, and lives on a seperate partition that is not touched when you do anything reasonable to your phone.
Sorry but you won't get rid of it!

OH yeah! Of course. I must have had a stroke or something .. ;; ) Not sure how I made that transposition. I've been away from Android development way too long. Thanks for setting that straight. Fortunately for everyone I never went ahead with my idiotic scheme. I may have just been so happy to get the 3.5.3 ROM build working that I got power-crazy. Jeez.
Many thanks.

Full Screen gesture control like Paranoid Android's blink concept.

I came around this app called Fluid Navigation Gestures.
It's awesome, it needs some permissions to hide the navigation bar that you have to provide through adb commands. The instructions are clear and anyone can do all that.
There are unlimited possibilities for the way you navigate through this app, It's highly customisable. There is also a 1$ optional payment that opens up more customizations.

Sorry, I meant accessibility. It's been a few weeks already that I tried. Let's see if I'll have this problem again. This app can consistently change the way we use our soft keys phones, and I loved it
Wish Android had the swipe-to-back feature that iOS has had for years, its such a smooth experience.
MIUI has the same gestures OP suggested, but its so unnatural, same goes for these gestures.
Really nice app and "fluid". Been using since day 1 I got a2 lite, as I loved the full screen gesture on MIUI ROM.
Although I recently updated to Pie and this app (and others like this) are causing flickering issues.
EDIT
Turning on "disable HW overlays" in developer options fixes the flickering issue for now.
