Is it possible to change the Region restriction (Malaysia to US) ? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I bought this N9 from eBay, but what I didn't realize is it is based off from Malaysia Region and has a Malaysia Region Lock.
I don't live in Malaysia or its region but what's bothering is till now this device did not receive any pie beta OS update (OneUI). Am not sure if this possible but I want to get this device to US region (idk if that is the right word) so that I will get OS update whenever they release it for the US region. So there any way I can change the region restrictions without rooting and flashing a new ROM?
Device Info:
Model : SM-N960F/DS
OS Version : 8.1.0
Baseband Version: N960FXXU2ARI4
Build Number: M1AJQ.N960FXXS2ARL3
SW VER:
SAOMC_SM-960F_OXM_XME_OO_0018
XME/INS/XEU/XME

Whst csc are you on? Go to settings, about phone, software and check service provider SW ver, it's the 3 letters like XFE/XEU/PHN etc.

While downloading the file refering to post#2, what should be the value for the region. I want it to be same as US Region. By the way I should tell you this, my phone is based on xynos processor. Will that is the same stock files for Odin..

if you just want change region for faster update, but you also know how to flash in odin, you can change csc to desired region then flash that region firmware. many thread about that in this forum.
any n960f firmware will work on any n960f, regardless of the region. idk the csc for US, but you can check this thread,

Record calls with Note 8 recently updated with last firmware (android 9)

We need to record calls without rooting our devices (mine is a Samsung Note 8 updated to Android PIE).
All third party apps are not working anymore because Google (shame on you) blocked them with android 9.
We need a quick solution from XDA because the most of the Producers brands don't want to provide for that (only Xiaomi provide a native function in his smartphones, from what i know). Samsung seems not interested to this request of the users.
Please develpers focus on this...million of users waiting a quick solution!!!!
Thanks in advance.

Actually You can. I changed mine from NZC to INS. Download the particular countries firmware and flash it with Odin.
I did it like 1 year back but just google it. There are steps. Knox will be still intact.

Hi, i have taiwanese firmware BRI (in Sammobile i can see that Taiwan and India have same the same CSC N950FOXM5DSB2).
I have not record call native function with this firmware. Are u sure that in Indian software that function is present? I mean in Note 8 (SM-N950F DS) dual sim.
By the way, if i decide to flash indian firmware .....to change CSC what file is the one to use? home_CSC or CSC? I've read that someone flashed the other country firmware but then CSC didn't changed ....
Can u link me a video to do this? or a forum with a clear instructions to use a firmware of another country?
Thanks in advance

Hey Try this. *#272*Device IMEI# if it shows list of CSC select the one you desired.
Caution: It will factory reset the phone. When booting don't insert sim card as it will try to change back CSC to your sim country. Let me know if it working.
I had to flash through ODIN coz in NZ phones are network dependent. but asian and european version have multiple CSC so it should work fine without root.

If it didn't work let me know. Got few idea in my mind.
You should be presented with this pop up once you enter the code in dialer.
maybe it's enough that i only change my CSC (now BRI) to INDIA (INS)..to enable record calls native function.
then hard reset and let update the smartphone.
I have Taiwan official last firmware with PIE now (received OTA) and i've read on Sammobile that Taiwan and India have same firmware numbers.
So maybe i don't need to flash indian firmware with ODIN....what do u think? Should it work this way?
I will test when i have time (i need the phone and i dont have time to waste reinstalling and configuring everything again)....
Before this test i wait other suggestions please...thanks in advance

1) Go to settings/ about phone/ software/ services provider SW ver. In that field you should see 3 CSC's like this example: TMB/TMB/TMB.
You can either use the firmware for the last CSC in that group or use your Carrier CSC. ( I would use your Carrier csc firmware if you're using any of the above CSC'S you mentioned. )
But there is something odd about your phone info. It says firmware is SM-N950U and CSC is SM-N9500. (2 different phone models, SM-N950U - USA model,
SM-N9500 - China model)
It should be all SM-N950U for firmware and CSC.
2) Dial *#1234# in phone and see the info on screen, it should be:
AP:
CP:
CSC:
MODEL:
Look at those 2 places first and report back what you see.

I agree that the N9500 is an issue and I'm thinking the phone might be a knock off possibly but I've been wrong before however, look at where the buttons are at... That doesn't look right to me..
The build fingerprint also says China. Kernel looks different.

The pictures aren't clear not enough light to really tell.
I can't see the power or the Bixby button. Also the volume button looks bigger and little bit off position but it could be due to a bad picture though.
But the thing that looks odd is the mixing of firmwares and what @butchieboy said about the fingerprint says china.
But he might of mixed the 2 firmwares up by using the BL, AP, CP from SM-N950U firmware and CSC file from SM-N9500 firmware.
I don't think you can do that without root but I could be wrong. Doesn't Odin complains about mixing firmwares from different models?
With Phone Info app do a refurbishment check. It will tell you if its an original Note 8.

yes, it shows that my phone is the refurbished one
it looks like that i might return it to the seller because he still open to return
So to me it looks like whoever had the device did something to it and had no clue what they were doing. Yep send the shiz back. Did you buy it from private seller? I doubt it would look like that if it were refurbished by Samsung.

I'd definitely be sending that back! I don't think it's an original Note 8 at all.. Even if it was, I don't see how anyone could have flashed that N9500 firmware to it because if it was a real N950U it would not have been able to flash the CSC from the N9500 either that's a refurbished N9500 or it's a knock off.

You can try to update using this unkown csc. You'll need to use Odin.
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-note-9-us/firmware/SM-N960U/CHA/
But the n960u won't have all the cellular bands that are used in your country, it'll have most but not all. You would need a SM-n960F if you wanted it to be fully compatible.

ROMs wont change what cellular bands that are active/inactive
And you should be able to flash using regular Odin, but it won't hurt to use modified Odin to gaurentee that it works. I always use the modified version just because.

I was in the same situation. Think I ended up with a grey import.
I found and then applied using Odin an unlocked Samsung ROM for the UK (Service provider Software now says XEU,XEU/XEU,XSG).
Since applied I've had one OTA update.
So yes, it might be worth looking into this approach for yourself.

Yeah but, before using Odin, your phone's firmare was for the UK? Or did u decide to install a different region firmware?
The phones origional region code was XSG, It did come to me with XEU,XEU/XEU,XSG as the region code. Provider is SAOMC.
I wonder if my problem was a baseband / firmware mismatch.
But I really don't know.

I understand, so you use your note 9 in the uk, this is why u flashed an UK Rom.
Yes, sorry, I'm in the UK.
If you go to the software information / service provider software version and look at the right most three character code on the third line of information in that section, you should get the origional country code.
But you have a very recent firmware & security patch, unless somethings not working I'd leave it for now.

It might have been IMEI blacklisted in the UK and then sold here, in Romania.. that's why I was thinking about the possibility of bricking it, due to its status - Imei blacklisted.

Iis service work? I mean network calls etc? Here if some imei on blacklist, you cant use for calls msg and other services from carrier...
I think if you have now firmware for UK, just download last one with samfirwm and flash with odin.
3-4 months, my sister have problem with j7 pro, it updated to andoird 9, but phone says last version is android 7(not even android 8)...so we just download firmware and flash trough odin...all is fine now
I flash pretty much all software updates now as it's clear Samsung isn't going to update on time. Based on my experience as long as you have an OXM Model and use HOME_CSC it shouldn't matter and your product code won't change.
I have a similar situation with a N960U. Wouldn't get software updates, was originally an AT&T phone. Flashed with a carrier unlocked firmware (TFW, in the states) & now it's a N960U1, & gets all updates.
Also has allowed me to use a CDMA network, because it just gets better service where I live (as opposed to GSM, as it was from purchase date) & effectively debloated it as well. Already enough samsung bloat, the AT&T bloat on top was just too much.
Hope this helps.

Would be a problem if I flash another android firmway?

There is my situation:
I have a Samsung Note9 phone with model number: SM-N9600. I heard that there is possible to update my android to 10 version. But i didn't received any update yet. My phone has this version of android 9:
"N9600ZHS4CTA2/N9600OWT4CSK1/N9600ZCS4CSKA
Security patch level: January 1, 2020"
It would be a problem if i try to flash another firmway version for SM-9600 which has the android 10 update?

Of course as long as it's same model. If you're in doubt, just flash firmware of same csc(like mine is XME as shown in phone info app)
Use samfirm/frija to download the firmware.
