Current Root Process? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to root my N6 but the process is a nightmare compared to the old ways I used to know. I followed the guide on this forum to successfully unlock the phone but there is no current root guide.
Device is n6f27m Android 7.1.1
- Chainfire failed (outdated)
- Nexus Root Toolkit couldn't auto detect phone settings and appears to have stopped updating around 7.0
- I keep hitting dead end outdated guides
- I've read some vague detail about fastboot install TWRP followed by SuperSU but nothing is clear
Can someone please direct me to a root guide or explain the process that actually works.

Three steps:
1) unlock bootloader
2) fastboot flash twrp
3) download root app and flash it in twrp
Magisk is generally the recommended root app these days.
I can go into more details about each step, but I don't know how much you already know.

Hi,
I managed to unlock the Bootloader on my Moto G 2nd dual sim. Now I'm looking for a step to step how to to root my phone.
There are so many (confusing) how to's out there
I'm using Marshmallow.
Took me a while to find instructions for non Windows user to unlock bootloader ...so a step by step Linux how to would be appreciated.
thanks in advance,
Best, Martin

As long as you have your adb and fastboot tools installed on your computer, as well as the drivers you need for the moto g2, the steps are the same for both windows and Linux. To root:
1. Flash twrp version 3.0.0.0
Download the file, place in your fastboot folder, and then open a command window in that folder. Type : fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
2. Using TWRP, install SuperSU v2.62 only.
3. (Optional)Boot your rom up and update SuperSU to version 2.65 using the play store.
That's all you need to get root access.

1. You do not need a modified boot image, SuperSU will modify the boot image for you.
2. I answered your question because I've done the above hundreds of times before.
3. I do realise that I'm replying many months later than when you posted, but XDA only informed me of your reply just now.

[GUIDE] Marshmallow Root Guide for ZE500KL

ATTENTION!
You MUST read all the guide BEFORE doing it, if you do it without reading all of it first you may ends up bricking your phone!
Prerequisites:
Asus ZE500KL (may work on ZE500KG, but haven't tested, do it on your own risk) on Marshmallow, NOT LOLLIPOP!
Also, it must have fully booted AT LEAST one time, otherwise, you'll soft-brick it.
If your phone is not on Marshmallow, you can use THIS guide insteadDownload and put the unlocker zip file and the SuperSu zip file in the phone
How To:
1 - Install adb and fastboot driver (follow THIS guide)
Now you can connect the phone to your computer2 - Reboot in fastboot mode with one of the following method:
a -Volume Up while booting upb -With adb, after enabling USB debugging in developer settings, using:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Now that you are in bootloader, you have to boot in TWRP,
download THIS recovery (is the twrp one) and boot in to it, using this command:
IMPORTANT: DON'T FLASH IT OR YOU WILL GET BOOTLOOP!!!
Code:
fastboot boot TWRP-x-x-x-x.img
(Obviusly the recovery name must be the one you downloaded)
IMPORTANT: DON'T FLASH IT OR YOU WILL GET BOOTLOOP!!!
It should automaticaly enter in recovery.
Now you MUST flash FIRST ZE500KL_BootloaderUnlock.zip, otherwise you'll brick your phone
Btw, the recovery will mount your phone's memory, so you can put now the files in the phone, if you forgot to do it before
AFTER you installed the unlocker zip, you can install the SuperSu zip
When the install is complete, clear the cache and reboot your phone, now you can enjoy your root!

I would recommend Z00L/T, you will get cm13, official unlock at least.
You Say " May Work On ZE500KG" Is ze500kg already receive Marshmallow Update?

magisk installation help

I have already researched on the internet.
I have op3t locked bootloader and non root and want to root using magisk without wipe or losing any data.
I am trying to install magisk using stock recovery and i am getting a message "installation failed". Steps followed:
1) copied magisk zip on root folder.
2) booted into stock recovery
3) clicked on "install from internal storage"
4) browsed to the file
5) clicked on "yes". Then i am getting above message.
Questions:
1) do i need to unlock bootloader first. Because magisk thread doesn't mentioned such a thing. Even youtube videos also did not mention to unlock bootloader first.
2) do i need to install twrp after bootloader unlock to flash magisk? I know for twrp installation, one need to unlock bootloader.
3) in magisk manager, its not detecting boot image and detect button is disabled as well. Any idea, why?
I am new to op3t. Previously, i had Xperia z3. So appreciate if anyone can help.
Moderators, please let me know if this is a duplicate thread or have i created it in wrong forum. If its a duplicate thread then point me to the original one. Hopefully that will answer my questions.
Thank you.

You need to unlock the bootloader and twrp to flash Magisk
Stick recovery is only good to flash OTA and Full OOS Roms.

You really don't need TWRP.
There's also a bunch of threads on rooting now.
Here's my one:
(Guide) Rooting, payload dumper, magisk_patched guides NE2213
Hi all, Thought i'd share a guide on how to get these boot images yourself as well as all the files required, plus the patched boot.img if you just want to go ahead and boot/flash it without obtaining one yourself Please read the process before...

It's based on the EU device so the images held here are for the NE2213 but the processes are valid for any OnePlus device.
All in thread if you need help

Your first step will be to quickly set up the phone so your ready to handle the bootloader. Get past all set up, it doesn't matter what you do as your wipe the device anyway.
Second is going about the tackling the bootloader (oem unlocking) Plenty of guides however please use below Make sure your sat on the home screen (unlocked)
Bootloader link bro
(Once you have done this leave the terminal open, you need this again.)
Afterwards, do a quick setup, nothing major to this as your be wiping again anyway
g96818 was kind enough to post a quide here : Rooting
I will refer to his links shared from now however in such a way you can stay here.
Assuming bootloader unlocked, device setup, now download and install the apk :Magisk root
You will also want his stock boot file being this here : Boot.img
With magisk open go to 'install' and select the boot image to patch it. Once it is patched up, connect back to the PC and copy the file to the same folder as the bootloader/ADB files . (rename the file to "patched_boot")
*terminal used before*
\To Reboot to bootloader - this also checks connection indirectly ( Copy from here and right click in CMD/terminal to paste it in)
Code in terminal:
adb reboot bootloader
(after a minute for two)Followed by:
fastboot boot patched_boot.img
After, reboot the phone so it powers up, maybe takes a tad longer but it should actually be very quick. (This is known as a temporary boot)
Then simply, "Open Magisk and perform a direct install". Afterwards i personally would reset the phone and set it up again properly (accounts, email, porn ect). The files you need remain.
Once set up, just be sure to reactivate developer options (OEM will now remain unlocked however re-enable USB debugging (if you have any issues this will save you!!!!!!!)) you cannot perm brick this phone unless you miss this one critical step up.
Reinstall magisk (I found my phone kept it however i also have it naturally on my play account so i may have missed it installing) Just check its there, any concerns you can now just directly flash again with no need for the PC now. Otherwise use a root checker off the play store however just get magisk anyway.
I then updated to A12 from the settings update and afterwards just for peace of mind, i redid a direct install via magisk incase the boot.img differed. I booted up perfectly fine after my update but for peace of mind i would recommend it.

Not nearly enough info. What steps did you take? Did you succeed in unlocking the bootloader? Did the tablet reboot after that? Did in factory reset? Did you re-enable Dev mode and OEM? What version of Odin? What version of stock ROM do you have? Did you flash VBmeta Disabler?

I was not able to get supersu into the root folder, but I understood that if you turn on developer mode and OEM unlock, you had unlock. I have not been able to figure out how to get supersu into the root folder.
It did boot after that.

don't know what version of stock rom, but it updated right before I did any of this.

You need to do a lot more reading. Forget everything you know about rooting because it won't help with this tablet. There is a link in the first post in this tread about how to unlock the bootloader and enabling Dev mode and OEM is only the very first step. You can't do anything else until that is complete and each step is important. Also in the first post is the stock version you'll need to flash before flashing VBmeta and TWRP.

Actually the thread you need to read is here. That has the link to instructions for unlocking the bootloader. Your next step will be to use Sammobile to download the stock version shown in that thread and flash it with Odin. That should get you back to a bootable ROM. Also, forget about supersu. Magisk is used to root these tablets.
edit: MY BIG MISTAKE. I thought you had a T500 tablet but looking closer to your post, you must have a T380 and the thread I linked won't work for a T380. You'll have to search for a thread for rooting your tablet. Sorry about that. I don't even know if the T380 has a locked bootloader. But your next step will be to flash the stock ROM you downloaded to get back to a bootable ROM.
