AT&T Note 9 still stuck on August security build - Odin advice needed - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I've got an AT&T branded Note 9 stuck at the Augist security patch. I've tried a few things (clearing cache on software update, setting date forward, safe mode, Smart Switch) and none have worked, so I'd like to give ODIN a try.
Based on the version I'm at now, can anyone recommend the specific files/versions I'll need to use in order to get my phone up to date but NOT wipe my data? I'd be fine with whatever the latest AT&T release is if it means that I might again begin receiving OTA updates.
My current info is in the attached screenshot. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not technically inept, but it's been a while since I flashed an update via unofficial means and never on a Samsung device.
Thanks,
-Brett.

Just download the most recent version of the firmware with SamFirm tool, then flash it with ODIN. Use HOME_CSC and you shouldn't have to wipe.

After checking sammobile, only 1 firmware available for n960u at&t which is that august firmware.

I wonder if they're missing some updates? According to AT&T, this should be the current version:

Android version: 8.1.0

Baseband version: N960USQS1ARL2

Pardon my ignorance, but would that put me on a path to no longer get updates from AT&T directly? Meaning, if I applied the latest updates that's not AT&T specific, would that cause me to no longer get updates from AT&T (not that I've been getting even those...) in the future?
Thanks,
-Brett.

Yes just flash away, do a data backup before you flash, cause AT&T will wipe your phone.

In my experience, Sammobile never has the current ATT firmware. They have all the other carriers, just not ATT. Plus it's slow AF to download from them.
That's why I said to use the SamFirm tool to download it. It always pulls the most recent firmware and does it directly from Samsung servers, so it's super fast and reliable.

Why would that take you off the ATT update path? I never suggested using firmware that wasn't specific to ATT. You download the most recent firmware from ATT with the SamFirm tool and flash it in ODIN.
In model you put SM-N960U and for region, you use ATT. As long as you're on an official ATT build, you stay on the ATT update path.
The SamFirm tool just pulls the updates directly from the Samsung servers, rather than going through slow-ass sammobile or updato.

That's totally my own ignorance/caution showing. It's been quite a while since I did any sort of ROM flashing and I'm really out of the loop. I was just double checking that what you were suggesting was the latest for AT&T and not a global update of some sort.
Thanks for clarifying. I'll give the SamFirm/ODIN combo a try when I get home from work. I'll be sure to back up first (assuming Safe Switch is a good way to do so?) and hope things don't get wiped in the process. Seems to be conflicting advice between you and Venom0642, but even if it gets wiped it's not a huge deal as long as I'm backed up.
Thanks again for your time!

Yup, just back up with Smart Switch and Samsung Cloud.
When you flash with ODIN, just skip the USERDATA file and use HOME_CSC instead if CSC_OYN. That SHOULD avoid wiping your phone. But ATT is weird, so I can't promise that.

Glad you got it all figured out!!

Will this work on a Note 9 that was originally on Sprint converted to AT&T? I bought this phone on Ebay to use for ATT and the software shows as ATT/ATT/SPR. I am still on October update and want to try to flash the update to at least December.

note 8 sm-n950U update to oreo from 7.1.1

Hi guys,
I want to know how to update to latest oreo update with all the security patches.
I am following this how-to thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...w-to-install-android-oreo-snapdragon-t3716281 but in the OP the links are broken.
Can anyone update me on this?
The phone is from verizon but I didn't use it on verizon. I got this phone last November. Currently using on Cricket, so probably I don't get automatic updates from Verizon.
my note 8 info:
7.1.1
experience v. 8.5
security patch level Nov 1, 2017
Baseband v. N950USQS2BQK2
Thanks in advance.

I am unsure if you should be on a much newer filmware or not. Sometimes a factory reset can resolve OTA not coming through, this will delete the phone memory though, so back up your data.
You can also get official filmware from sammobile and updato. Just if you want to flash Oreo with Odin, make sure you use the latest version of Odin (3.13.1)

I am on Cricket and using Verizon note 8 that I got from last December. Last update was in November when I still have Verizon. After inserting Cricket sim card, there has never been an update anymore. I turned on Wifi and went into settings> software update to refresh, and there is no awaiting update. I didn't change to unlock firmware (as I do not know how). How do you go about installing the updates to latest Oreo using Odin? I am on 7.1.1 with build 2BQK2

I recommend that you try a factory reset to see if that pushes the OTA update.
If this fails, I will help you step by step with Odin.

July 1st Security Update for Unlocked Note 8 using Sprint

Can anyone confirm if the CRF6 security update breaks anything? More specifically, are the APN settings still accessible? I want to install it, but I am happy with the current state of things. Thanks
I've just updated July 1 security firmware on my unlocked 950U1 and been using with T-Mobile, everything is good including APN settings or adding.
Thanks. I just installed and all is good.
I have the 950u1 on crf6 and I want to flash tmobile firmware on it but it keeps failing any advice
So I am assuming you cant flash a U firmware on a u1 device? Am I correct on this assumption? I figured since you can flash u1 on a u device you should be able to flash a u firmware on u1
I would like to update my note8
Can some assist with the update please. I have CRC4 and want to update to CRF6 using ODIN. Can someone guide me please?

Cant revert back to the fw originally on my phone (after flashing that ATT pie fw)

N960W, Snapdragon (so no root / bl unlock)
I flashed the Oreo FW after trying the Pie fw from ATT (link was around here somewhere - it required flashing in Odin as well as a local recovery zip flash - two separate files)
Now Odin fails and the phone shows "An error has occ ured while updating the device software" and wont boot. I've downloaded and am trying to flash the official pie update originally for my phone that just came out a few days ago (N960WVLU1CSAA or something like that)
Are you using the patched ODIN? If so it should work just fine. Try a factory reset in Recovery, then boot directly to Download mode and flash it again.

Yea I'm using the patched version.
I will try this next. I flashed the ATT oreo and then XAC version but didnt include CSC this time and it flashed but it boot loops.
I'm currently flashing all of XAC and if it fails then I will reflash ATT oreo, factory reset in recovery and dirctly flash xac oreo.

What is happening? Is ODIN failing? And at what point does it fail? Or does ODIN finish flashing and day "Pass"?

Odin (patched) gets right to the end and fails, followed by the download mode error mentioned earlier.
I can successfully flash ATT fw 8.1.0 (AT&T_N960USQS1ARJA), but cant flash anything else (Canadian XAC 8.1.0 or Pie).
I am contemplating downloading and flashing the ARL1 fw from the same att source

The Pie fw (Canadian XAC, N960WVLU1CSAA or something like that, I don't have my laptop handy right this minute) is for my model (N960W) specifically but won't flash. I'm currently able to flash and use 8.1.0 few made for N960U, which is the AT&T ARJA fw.

I started off with the Roger's fw for 8.1.0 and wanted to try pie so I followed a guide to flash some pie build which I believe was the UK version, and when I realized I hated it, i had to follow a guide to revert back to oreo but a different source, thatz where the at&t oreo fw came from.
Now, i want to revert back to the official fw for my phone so i can choose to officially ota to pie, which is not possible right now because I'm stuck on at&t oreo, and pie just became available for me.

To download it.
The reason I was avoiding this was because Canadian carrier versions (including the Roger's fw) don't seem to have mobile data and hotspot toggles and they also have unnecessary bloat, so I figured if I'm gonna flash a fw, I'll just flash the full Canadian unlocked fw to stay away from bloat and carrier restrictions.

What is your CSC? I'll check SamFirm myself tonight or tomorrow.
Ok so I re-downloaded the Canadian XAC Pie FW, did a factory reset (via recovery), and then Odin (patched) flashed the XAC Pie fw, and guess what!!! PASS.
It must have been a bad download this entire time, or possibly the issue was that I unchecked the option CRC32 in SamFirm.
Thank you guys for all the help. OMG

ATT Pie > Q on N960U

I've been checking for an OTA update from Pie to Q on my N960U for like a month. It looks for it, but always says "software up to date".
This ATT link seems to say Android 10 is out, and has been since February.
Can I download the ATT (not XAA) Q update somewhere and flash with ODIN? Don't see it on sammobile.
Thats because At&t doesnt post their firmware. This has been addressed 100's of times. You can flash any 960U firmware with Odin and it will provision to your sim.
Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
Yes, I've literally read a hundred posts referencing XAA.
Which leaves the question, then: why can't I OTA? It worked from Oreo to Pie.
For some reason many with At&t devices do not get OTA's...I am one of them. You can try to odin back to a build before the last version that you are not getting updates on. But you have to be sure the bootloader version is the same. All carrier firmware is the same. Just go to Frija and download the firmware and flash with Odin. Dont know why your not finding U firmware its all over the place even on Sammobile. Instead of clicking N960U1 in sammobile click N960U and you can use any of the firmware listed.
SM-N935F Note FE OREO
Not getting OTAs would quite suck. And yet I've gotten everything up until the CSJ1 release in November. I'm not sure what broke.
Do I then download and ODIN the whole thing every month, for security updates?
Yeah you can. I mean if there is a security update (S) yeah just download and flash everything. Flashing Home_csc will save data if you flash just csc along with bl..ap..cp it will wipe data. To me a clean install is best, I dont mind setting my phone up

Might wanna just check out the thread in the general discussion section bud. That's how a lot of us with AT&T phones have been updating. I just flashed my and my wife's note 9 to the march security path of Android 10 a few days ago. Everything went smoothly ?? I don't know what AT&T's problem is but it's one of the reasons I'm no longer a customer with them.

Question Should You Flash the Latest Software Or Flash All Previous Software Updates Incrementally

Hello guys.
So I recently got a phone that's stuck with the August 2021 security patch. I wanna flash the latest software so had 2 questions:
1. Should I flash the most recent software update or considering I've never actually updated my phone, should I flash all the previous updates from August first before I flash the latest one.
2. I wanted to know if anyone has experience flashing SM-G998U1 firmware on a SM-G998U phone. I heard you can flash "U1" or carrier unlocked firmware on a "U" or carrier locked phone. Just that you'd lose all your data. I have an SM-G998U locked to Verizon and since I'm not in the US Verizon says they can't unlock it for me. So my only option is to flash new firmware updates. But I can't for the life of me find any Verizon SM-G998U firmware from after August 2021 (that's my latest security patch) online. So wanted to hear from anyone with experience that's flashed "U1" firmware on a "U" phone.

I'm not trying to unlock my phone. It's usable cause it doesn't reject simcards. Just denies me OTA updates. All I want is new software.
Is there another option apart from flashing new firmware if I want to update it? I'd love to unlock the phone but all the websites keep talking about generating codes. My phone doesn't request a code. And I can still use it. If there isn't another option for unlocking, can you assist with the questions I've asked?
Fine to flash new firmware to get the latest.
1. If you flash complete FW using Odin, you can flash the latest, no need to flash intermediate updates.
2. Did you search the forum yourself? See following thread for FW versions of the US-devices: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...s-and-flashing-discussion-here.4220111/unread

Thanks so much for all the help Yeah I've seen that thread before. But only firmware available until November 2021. Nothing after. So think I'll try the U1 to U option for now.
