Thinking about buying the Note 9. - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I'm located in the USA and AT&T is my carrier. I would like to be able to run custom ROMs on the phone. I did a quick search and came up with the following models "SM-N960F or SM-N960F/DS". Which version of the Note 9 is able to run custom ROMs? Thank you in advance for your advice.

960F and 960F DS are exynos variant, with unlocked/unlockable bootloader, both should run custom firmware without problems.
The difference being one is dual sim (hence the ds in the name).
960U/960U1 are snapdragon variants and have a locked bootloader, so no go on those.

So do the SM-N960F or SM-N960F/DS have all the correct bands for AT&T? Just curious as I have always wanted to do what you are doing...

Based on this thread, it looks like the 960F DS has the correct bands to run on AT&T. It may be missing some features such as Wifi calling though.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/help/sm-n960f-ds-att-t3846648

DS means dual sim. D is the single sim.
snapdragon also have the n9600 that is rootable.
only one dev right now so only 1 rom in xda.
might be more in the future...
forum is full of this info. brows around.

We will need eng kernel before that happens. I'm sure it will be doable in the future, not now though.
Edit.....looks like note 8 could be different than the s8...

Flash to all and all to flash...no prob
So if I flash AT&T firmware on Tmobile Note 8, it should work fine on AT&T since there's no Tmobile Unlock App in it? Right?
Just bought a Tmobile Note 8 and am trying to make it run on AT&T

Yes...if you look into the s8+ forum for carrier switch there is a guide that should also work for note 8...the main focus is to change the csc...however, you may just be able to flash the ATT firmware and it work when you put in the ATT SIM. It may be better to flash the unlocked firmware first...and then to att...but to get the device to be csc ATT, instead of ATT, ATT, TMB, You may have to follow the S8+ guide...
So try the easiest first, flash ATT...If activation does not work, flash Unlocked then ATT, if that is no good...follow the S8+ guide with Canadian firmware to change csc code of device to ATT...you might pm the op of the S8+ guide about what Canadian firmware to flash to change the csc...I am going to make a guide for us when I have a chance to test it myself...if just flashing to AT&T works...awesome, good luck
Oh yeah...the device must be unlocked first to change carriers...you can get it unlocked by T mobile or by paying for it

Flashing Samsung Galaxy Note 8 - G955W (Canadian) to a G950U1 Note 8

Hi Everyone,
I've searched and could not find a clear answer, and am hoping someone can help.
I just purchased a US Samsung Note 8 (SM-950U1), my question is, is it possible for me to install the G955W (Canadian) firmware on this device?
For Canadian users is anyone currently using a US Note 8 (SM-950U1) Factory unlocked?
Thanks.
Made a typo I meant can I flash SM-N950W Canadian firmware to a SM-950U1 Factory unlocked Note 8
Thanks,

not yet, North American models are all Snapdragon with locked bootloaders. If someone finds a way to unlock the bootloader then you could get a flashable zip version of a Canadian ROM and use that but as far as I've seen nobody has been able to do much with the Snapdragon variants yet.
I have been reading the s8 plus thread where users have flashed the s8 plus Canadian (sm-g955w) firmware to the Us s8 plus (sm-g955u) is it not the same process?
Thanks for your help

If you follow the s8 + guide...if available it would be the same for u...I am working on a guide for carrier switching but it is for U.S. snapdragon models...but it uses the Canadian XAC home_csc...I say pm the poster of the s8+ that you mentioned for details and then flash at your own risk....you can always flash back to your original....before you do, though, insert your Canadian carrier SIM and see if you can activate it...when I was testing the carrier switch there were options to change to Canadian csc's....good luck
Any update? I also bought my note 8 from USA. With the US firmware, we do not have access to certain features like VOLTE or caller ID and spam protection.
Check out blue fox's thread. I just flashed US firmware on a Canadian unlocked XAA device(not sim locked to Rodgers, bell etc). long as your flashing stock Samsung firmware, youll be fine. The Canadian and US Note 8 phones are basically the same.

Recommended Exynos Galaxy Note 8

Hello everyone,
I'm looking to buy the best possible Exynos Galaxy Note 8, and I'm surprised and lost on the number of models available.
Would N950N be a good choice? I would like to replace the ROM by a stock-based one as usual, install TWRP, root, etc.
Would this model work in Brazil and USA on roaming?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

it works, but you'll end up flashing a 950F-based ROM anyway as all the development is using those as a base.
as for "works in Brazil and USA on roaming" that entirely depends on which bands you need.

So we could assume that N950F would be a better choice or doesn't matter anyway?

They are identical hardware, and if you are flashing a ROM anyway the software won't matter either.
The only real consideration I can think of is internal storage, since I believe the 950F is still only available as 64gb, while the N can be bought in a 256gb version.
Get the UK or UAE unlocked dual sim 64 gb version. I have the UK one from Samsung UK. I have my UK EE sim and AT&T sim active. I'm on rooted magisk Dr. Ketan Rom N4 with Iron Kernel 1.1.2. OEM UNLOCK available immediately and still post rom install. Wonda Mobile has the UAE version.
You can get the 950F 128GB in mexico
I really prefer to have the 6GB/256GB Exynos version, so N950N seems a good choice.

Yes, there is. Single sim Korean variant. https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/help/n950n-note-8-256gb-att-t3675577
You're thinking of the Chinese variant N9500, which is Snapdragon.

hi, sorry if I did not have to write correctly. I wanted to know what kind of difference is there between the 9 korean version notes, the processor? has limitations, less functions, different startup logo etc. if you can list all the differences. thank you

the korean N960N has the same specs as the Fs.
so its a exynos chip and not a snapdragon.
this is my second Korean Note and have been extremely pleased.
no visual issues like some have reported on ither device.
Just flawless.
concerning logo( carrier stuff there are 3 or 4 carries in Korea so you are likely to get one of those.)
since i have rooted mine, i have rebranded csc to my sims carrier.
usually they ship region unlocked. When i buy from wondamobile,
seals is broken but it is probably to remove the lock. they make a 5 minute call to lift it.
these phones don't have the oem unlock vanishing issue either.
the Korean version has no snapdragon. Does the Samsung logo appear on the ignition? but do you need to change them to work with your operator? but does it have any restrictions with respect to others?

if i remember correctly, before i rooted and modified phone, it did have that carrier logo. but phone worked fine regardless. LTE and such was all working. Yes some carrier bloat in korean but that was to be expected. I root my phones so that was not an issue.
right now running Dr. ketan rom on canadian Rogers csc and all us working fine.
but does it also work in other regions? are there any preinstalled apps? Ke stock European firmware, not Korean can you flash?

like any rooted device OTA will stop working. you will have to manualy downlaod firmwares to keep it up to date.
right now Pies official build has arrived for N960N devices for 1 or 2 weeks now.

[Q] Differences between US and EU models

I am from Germany and I just got a used Note 9. It is not the SM-N960F (with Exynos) but a SM-N960U1 (with Snapdragen). I wonder which model is better especialy when using it in Germany. Should I keep it or give it back.
I am not sure about all the differences and have a few questions:
Does the US model suppoert all the GSM and LTE bands which are used in Germany?
(The US model supports (W)CDMA but that is useless here.)
Can the bootloader of the US model be unlocked?
(AFAIK you can easy unlook bootloader of the Exynos models via developer options.)
Are there more differences?
Again: Should I keep the phone or should I better get an EU model instead? What would you do?
Please help! Thank you!

Knows anyone a website with informations about the supported LTE bands of the different models?
Google knew about such website: https://www.teamandroid.com/2018/08/14/samsung-galaxy-note-9-model-numbers/
