So who is waiting to root the S6 to see if Samsung Pay requires a Non-Tripped KNOX?
I am seriously on the fence about it, in my opinion it is about a 50% chance it will be required, and even then will I really use it all the time?
On the other hand I love root and the apps I have that require it.
What are your thoughts, Waiting or no?
*We are assuming that any root methods will trip KNOX. Even if root is achieved without tripping KNOX a ROM requiring a recovery WILL trip it anyways*
I'm in the same boat.. So much so that I'm debating if I want to keep this device. I enjoy custom roms way too much. Coming from a Lg G2 running 5.0.2 AICP rom, it was really great.
More worried that with Tmobile and JUMP if I ever need to get a replacement device, that KNOX will cause issues when they receive my device. With my G2, i returned it but after I reverted to stock.
This is the first time I'm actually afraid to root and install custom recovery. I only have 6 days to decide if I want to keep this before i have to send in my g2 for jump

Two things to keep in mind:
T-Mobile doesnt care about JUMP even in warranty situations. Revert it back to stock and go on your merry way. Only Samsung cares and under JUMP you have warranty care as well, so T-Mo not Samsung takes care of the claims/replacement device
AOSP Roms may not come to the S6 for a while, at least not stable. The Exynos processor is notorious for poor support from AOSP roms like AICP, CM, SLiM and others.. Just a heads up

I'm aware Aosp isnt stable, which is fine. I'm ok with at least a stock base thats been modded. Custom kernal would be great to make the phone more energy efficient

We know root is available, it's been available since before the pre-order even went live. It still trips Knox though, and that's the discussion.
Personally, I'm waiting until either Knox can be bypassed, or we get confirmation that Samsung Pay won't need it. Somehow I doubt either will happen, but I'm willing to wait a while to find out.
tlxxxsracer: Don't count on custom kernels, but that goes without saying. A modified base would be nice, AOSP would be wonderful but unrealistic. Honestly at this point, the only reason I want root is Titanium Backup, an ad blocker and putting the Nexus dialer/contacts on the phone. Touchwiz dialer is simply awful.
Don't care. Rooted. Can't stand ads and need tethering (AT&T corporate account). But I would root just to block the ads. I accept the consequences and if I can't use Samsung pay, I'll simply use Google wallet, which will work everywhere Apple Pay is accepted anyway.

How do you put the nexus dialer/contacts on the phone?? You are running a TouchWiz based ROM so I imagine it won't just be that easy... I been trying to get it to work on my S5 but to no avail lol -__-

S6 already has root.... Only phones that have shipped are T-Mo and they are the only one's with root anyway..

Joe, reread my posts. I am choosing NOT TO ROOT, because I'm holding off for an option that either doesn't trip knox, or confirmation that tripping knox doesn't void Samsung Pay. Stated that in my first post.

I haven't rooted a phone in at least a couple years. No need anymore. On the Note 8, practically anything can be disabled, themes don't need root, there are amazing root-free adblockers now, and performance is killer. Why waste time tinkering with the phone when I can be enjoying it instead?
I rooted my phone. There is no adblocker like AdAway and I enjoy tinkering with it.

I was simply answering the question as it pertains to me.
For me, no reason to root. Only reason I did was for titanium backup but it caused more issues than it was worth. I restore with samsung backup and log back in to everything to start fresh everytime. I found that rooting to restore and start with dirty app data caused unwanted results. There is not 1 thing I need root for now days

at least for now we have UK version Note 8 N950F that has unlocked bootloader, and works with multiple bands !! unfortunately it's the only version that supports everything, would be nice to have 256gb on board.
microsd cards is really garbage laggy crap, which will die on you anytime.
I had the S8+ and my version didn't have root, so I was forced to live without it.
I'll be getting my hands on the Note 8 in a couple of days, and my plan now is NOT to root it, regardless of whether root is available. The reason is because what I LOSE from root now outweighs what I gain from it.
The main thing that I lose from root? SECURE FOLDER!
This has become really valuable to me. I lost it after rooting the Note 7 so never really got to use it, but after having used it on the S8+, I don't think I'm willing to give it up.
Like others have already pointed out, the benefits of root aren't that important anymore:
- Titanium backup for restoring apps - mostly done by Samsung's restore, and my most important apps to port over with data have their own backup/restore functions anyway (ie. Wechat and Whatsapp)
- Other root apps like Greenify - Samsung already has similar functions built-in
- Backup of entire phone - can live without it
- custom roms - Samsung already has most of the stuff I wanted from custom roms anyway, like showing the battery percentage on notification bar, etc.
- Accessing root directory - oh well, too bad. Won't die without this ability.

As others have said, most thing you needed root for you can do without root now. For me it was Call Recording and changing the DPI, both of which i could do perfectly on my N8 before rooting it.
I have rooted Note 4 but now do not see point why i need to do for note 8
1 Will trigger know and other samsung security services
2 The all point why Samsung not allowing to root is for security reason as it is all point how to secure you data

LOL, you know this is a DEV website right? Where people hang out to root phones, because they want to. Because they enjoy it.
If you don't root then what developer will do Lol !
Anyway, loosing Spay and secure folder is currently challenging, may be some workaround appear later. Also development is at early stage so may you can wait till you find good reason for it. By the way, rooted mine almost in no time after getting it on 21st.

Got my brand new S10+ yesterday, and found out that no one rooted it yet (am I right?).
Migrating from a previous phone to a new one usually takes me a couple of hours of setting up everything, and a couple more of fiddling around, and I'll hate to do it twice.
I'm guessing its going to take a similar amount of time for many of you guys that likes everything customized & tailored.
So... what do you say?
Migrate (and then when a safe rooting method is out there - repeat everything)?
Wait for root while your brand new & shiny phone smiles at you from your desk while collecting dust?
How long do you think we'll wait until someone comes up with a rooting solution?
I'm gonna set mine up and use it like normal, just no updating at all until a root methods is discovered, preferably one with an unlocked bootloader and that doesn't trip Knox. I haven't had a Galaxy device since the Note 4, Knox is still a thing, right?
Also, I assume you tried unlocked the bootloader in developer options and it didn't work?
Rooting has become a more difficult process in the last few recent years. I'm pretty sure the snapdragon variant is the one that likely won't get a root method or that it will be a long while until it comes around - I could be wrong and not trying to spread misinformation...
Truth be told, the Galaxy s8 was the first phone I felt I didn't need to have root with. The ability to remove apps out of the box, freezing unneeded apps, and substratum for theming really helped with that. I can't wait for my s10 to get here Friday. I don't expect root, but with the new UI, and hopefully, the ability to theme or have a dark mode once again will likely stem that feeling to need root.
While I can obviously live without root since I did pre-order this phone, i will still be a bit sad without Viper4Android

You're going to have to post a model # or something US/International Snapdragon/Exynos before anyone can answer that question. Exynos=root, US Snapdragon=probably never.
If you have any Samsung Snapdragon phone and are waiting for someone to root it you'll see the sun burn out and die sooner.

I did see that option under the dev menu, but I didnt try to use it, because AFAIK, bootloader unlocking is only the first step towards a properly rooted device....
Is there any advantage for unlocking the bootloader (before a rooting method is discovered) that I'm missing?

When you unlock the boot loader, it’ll factory reset your device, including wiping internal sd card. Best to go ahead and do that sooner than later imo

I'm aware that rooting will wipe my device clean - thats the reason I brought the question up...
But - are there any other steps in the currently known Samsung rooting methods that will also wipe my phone?
In other words - if I'll unlock the bootloader now (and factory reset my phone) - will I be able to root & keep my data and setup in the future (once a rooting method is discovered)?
My main reason for wanting root is call recording and Swift installer support. But I think maybe Swift installer is now working on Pie? I haven't confirmed that yet. But call recording has been a valuable tool for me. I hope one day someone, an app or whatever, can get it working on Pie without root.

Oh man don't even mention Titanium Backup. I had many rooted Moto phones from the original thru the G4 and even did some rom development with them. Titanium Backup was one of the first and best apps I ever paid for. The one good thing about Motos though , it was almost impossible to brick a Moto.

First time with pie? Why are you trolling the forum reposting this question instead of spending a minute looking?
After you tap build number and it tells you that developer options have been enabled, go back to the top level menu and scroll all the way down. It's at the very bottom.

Actually, it used to be my top reason for rooting my previous devices, BUT:
to my surprise - Samsung included call recording on their OFFICIAL S10 rom (in my country), so I have this feature out of the box, integrated into the in-call screen.

Yes, I've tried them, but it'd be nice if we could have the apps and functionalities we're supposed to receive with our VERY expensives phones. We don't have many things we saw while Huawei was announcing this phone. Those features (like the double video recording) were pretty desirable while making the decision between buying the P30Pro or the S10+, and then we don't receive some of them.

You have said that you watched the video, yet you do the same thing that so many people do and ignore the bits you don't want to read.
The presentation clearly said "functionality added via HOTA (Huawei Over The Air) update", but you didn't want to read that and now you're here moaning.
It's a great phone without these features, and rest assured the features will be added in the future.

With Samsung once you root and trip Knox you can't go back to stock - ever. And some apps will not work anymore. This is actually my first phone where I haven't seen any need for root anyway.
Take a look at good lock, with it you can customize allmost everything, incl. clock postition.

latest july build seems to have decent battery without the need to root.
also using samsung goodlock and its various components, you will be able to do a lot of stuff that were only possible on a rooted device. such as move clock position and much more UIwise.
for brightness % sorry never seen that.
so play around with all the goodlock addons 1st and see if its worthing staying on stock. as you know rooting will kill Spay...so
( i can never stay on stock since its much to fun to flash roms every now and then)

goodlock can be found on the Samsung store.
there is also an alternative called nicelock in the guides forum.
basically goodlock in it self is nothing but a downloader/manager or various plugins. they are the ones that modd the system.

sometimes apps are available by region. so using nicelock should bypass this.

uninstall nicelock an try this method which worked for me.
1. remove the sim.
2. uninstall samsung store
3. restart the phone.
4 open the vpn app and select US .
5. open samsung store , download the app update and than install goodlock.
6. open goodlock and install the apps-plugins ( download all of them and later you can uninstall unwanted ones).
7. insert sim and restart .....

im dealing with theis question myself, i have a korean version - n960n and im having some network connection problems ( i live in midle east which has different bands), and the super late updates from samsung for this model, im still in April security update.
other than this i really dont see the need for root-custom rom for my phone.
i will wait till the end of this month and see.

5. open samsung store , download the app update and than install goodlock.

you should be on may release. manually download it and flash it with Odin.
I'm in the same boat here and am quite surprised by it. I ALWAYS root my phone, first thing, asap. I specifically bought the exynos version of the N9 so I could root. But after playing with it I find myself wondering why I need root.
Ad blocking - kind of miss this but using Brave browser mostly fixes that.
Customization - GoodLock is AWESOME. Takes place of rom customizations and Tasker, which was a must have for me.
Call recording seems to work, which it didn't on my Pixel.
Get to keep Samsung pay, which is much better than Google pay. And secure folder is a lot better than the name suggests, since it provides doubles if apps allowing multiple active logins.
Someone convinced me why I need to root this phone??

to have fun with it and try new things. ( i get bored fast and quickly want more)
if you want to use the phone within the allowed parameters and not want anything more than you already have, than don't root. because the 1st thing happens when you root is that knox fuse gets tripped and apps relying on the device's security integrity will stop trusting it and fail to work. but apart from S pay you can get prety much all apps working one way or an other on a rooted phone just as a stock one would.( lately secure folder was found to work! thx dr

but i do understand that its like: why break what's not broken?
some of us like the freedom and ability to do more. its not essential but since we own the device i guess our though process is what can we do to get even more out of this device.( price is not cheap so we need a reason to justify having bought it guess and have our money's worth ! lol )
but it is true. with good lock the visual aspect that was once one of the big reasons of rooting is now less and less of a reason. same goes with themes as well. nice alternatives to the stock themes and store bought ones like the wonderfull app: #hex ( xda made! search for it here and on playstore) allows you to theme. it has slimmed the gap even more between the need to root and not having to.
one aspect though that is important is being able to remove content and aslo add content like unsupported region carrier specific features eg:CSC , i put canadian CSC on my n960n.( somewill argue rhat if i had bought the canadian variant i would not need to do this. but the other reasons outlined in this message outweighs this.)
all in all im happy with my decision. and i have no trouble understanding that you or others are also quite happy with not having rooted.
what is good is that rooting has put pressure and have given samsung and other device companies examples and insight on what the community wants. by rooting and modding the device we show exactly what we need/want. and the result ( goodlock and other additions) that are aosp inspired has really made the device shine and be an attractive experiance to the general public and rooted user alike.

I've definitely rooted a bunch of phones. Every phone in my signature that could be rooted, and many friends phones etc. I've been a huge proponent of root. This phone just seems to not need it, at least not yet at this point. When sammy stops pushing updates in timely manner I will probably reconsider.
You are absolutely right that root, and the xda community in particular, has really pushed OEMs to make things better. Its great progress.

there is also an alternative called nicelock in the guides forum.
basically goodlock in it self is nothing but a downloader/manager or various plugins. they are the ones that modd the system.
