Gcam vs Stock cam app - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

Hello there, i have Xiaomi Mi A2 for like month or so. I wanna ask someone is it really worth do all the stuff (root etc) for that gcam app? I mean if there really big difference or just small details in final photos (gcam vs stock cam)? I just wondering if i should do it. Thanks for any advice or maybe some sample photos.

IMHO, Google Camera works better at night when used with Night Sight than the stock camera. During the day, Google Camera is not so good to take pictures because "focus dots" - small dots when the subject is blue or yellow, however, even in daylight, Google Camera capture more detailed photos than stock camera. HDR+ works very well, however, if you are satisfied with the results of stock camera app, stick with it.

I use gcam as my daily driver. Stock cam is no where close ,except maybe in certain conditions. It is totally worth it especially after xiaomi made the stock cam worse with the feb update.

Okey thanks. If i choose to do it should i use this guide?

Noticeably worse. Loss in detail in appalling.

So i did it and last day i spend outside testing and holy moly that difference is sooo big. Gcam is 100% better and night sight is so cool even during day photos are much better then from stock cam.

Is it possible to use slow-mo and 1080p 60 FPS video recording with Gcam?

Hi, I'm new to the rooting stuff
I want to know if my data will be erased if I root
And what should I do if I got stuck in a boot loop
I'm on December update atm
I really want to get gcam

If you haven't yet unlocked the bootloader, then yes you will lose data. Follow this guide,it is quite easy:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/how-to-enabling-cam2-gcam-android-t3868766
However instead of flashing a patched image as mentioned in the thread, just boot into it.(read the first page of the thread thoroughly)
Also, this method temporarily roots your device.

I don't know what is wrong with my A2, but the install process doesn't work.
With all the other versions I still can see focus dots. Focus dots everywhere in the sky

It works! I had an old version of GCAM.
There are two pictures: first stock camera (without february update) and the Google Camera Arnova 1.4a by TInNeun.
If you take a zoom in sky, you'll see small dots. This happens in yellow color too.

This was taken with hdr camera+ in quite low light.
Was comparing different camera apps last night.
Unfortunately the stock camera app either blurred it out, or fired flash and I got a blue white glare.

Personally I think that in most cases HDR are a bit washed out.
HDR processing engine in XZ is not the best (I know what I am talking about, been doing photos for years ... with 60D, now with 7D over a year, processing with PS CS3, CS4 and now CS5).
What do you think guys ?
personally I think it's not post-processing the HDR properly, it's just saving the last exposure, (the stock camera takes 3 the same as the hdr+ app) then combines them.
You can see the different ones appear in the thumbnail preview in the stock camera app when you take a hdr photo, the last one is the one that shows up.
Must have a look at the logs, see if there's anything obvious.

I wouldnt fully agree that it shows last from the 3. If it was, buildings would be properly exposed and the sky much over exposed. Like you can see this is not the case as the sky is still properly exposed.
Where to find these logs ?

[tip] improve the quality of your camera's photos

Well... First of all, sorry if im posting in the wrong section or something inappropriate, I just want to share this knowledge. Second, sorry for any english mistake, its not my native language.
The tip is very simple, no need to root, flash, or nothing like. Since the photos nowdays comes strongly processed and that throws away a lot of image detail, the tip goal is to get an image with practically no processing just like raw.
My device is the ZE550KL with snapdragon 410, 16gb, 2gb ram, with stock android 5.0.2. And have tested on it only. Please reply if it worked in your different device/rom.
Step 1: install Snap Camera HDR trial.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.marginz.snaptrial
Open the app and wait the 10 sec limit.
Step 2: on photo settings, scroll down and uncheck "denoise". This will turn off the noise reduction.
Step 3: still on photo settings, set "sharpness" to -3. This will turn off digital sharpening, instead of reduce sharpness. You can notice a lot less noise due to noise not sharpened.
Step 4: repeat the same for the front camera settings and set "exposure" to -1. This will compensate a bug that makes front camera photos to overexpose 1 stop.
Ps: the app do not show shutter speed control, but you can set it on asus camera (up to 1 sec) and go to snap app and it will affect the shutter speed there.
Download the attachment to see a sample test.
Hope this can be useful to someone else.

You know, we change the app but the camera is the same. The difference is in the post-processing. We might notice more noise, but I can assure you that there will be a lot more detail, with more expressive difference with front camera photos. Personally, I find that the photos with more detail are a lot better, so my answer to your question is yes. But some people may like better pictures more processed.

Yes, those camera modes are something like "presets". Each one has different app settings. I find this feature kinda useless for my device.

Strange....
I do not see either "denoise" or "sharpness" in the latest version.
Do you think they might have moved somewhere else - or does not work anymore?

I wish this also worked in my PadFone S.
The camera in this phone is good. The exposure and white balance is almost always spot on but when I zoom in on photos, it looks like garbage because of the low quality post processing.

Any tried the Nokia 8 with the Google Camera App?

As you guys probably know, this port of Google's Pixel app has been doing the rounds on XDA and various users report much better quality photos with it on Snapdragon devices.
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-updated-zero-shutter-lag-xiaomi/
Has anyone tried this on the Nokia 8? Does it work? If yes, could you post some sample photos and comparison with Nokia's own default camera app? I'm especially interested in low-light situations.
Thank you
yes, hdr+ is giving me awesome photos.
sadly we need to edit media_profiles.xml to add profiles for slow-motion and HFR.
can't alter the system for now as there is no bootloader unlock (thus no custom recovery or root).
Thank you.
I mostly care about HDR+ so that's great to hear.
Have tried the Google camera app and I believe at the moment I get better results. The Nokia software algorithms need some work I think.

This was a good post to get the history and to learn about the different versions.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/modded-google-camera-hdr-60fps-video-t3658552
I'd say start with the 3.8 (linked in post above, without any letter after it) version but 1.4-version will probably be fine as well.
Note to others downloading the file: The Android Download-app doesn't open APKs, you need to install a file manager app to open it.
So next question, which are the recommended settings in the app? In the 3.8 version there are tons of values you can select. HDR+ isn't enabled per default.
I tried on Nokia8 and I think no one notice that it has small color dots and line in every photo that process HDR at the bottom of picture. I tried every setting and still can't figure out how to remove. It's also appear in skip24ftlb's photo.
Seems ok the shots come out slightly better than nokia stock but the bottom of the photo has these blue and red bars (looks like some graph lines) on every photo that you point at a bright source of light and reduce the brightness on screen to absolute minimum. Happened on all photos that I took of the sunrise with heaps of bright orange clouds.
It stickout more when the bottom half of the photo is darker down the bottom.
Cheers

[REQUEST] GCam mods A71

As per the thread tittle, are there any devs currently working on GCam mod optimised for Samsung Galaxy A71? Would love to test them out and compare with stock photo app.
Just search on Google, there's quite a lot.
Works just fine. I'd say depending on the shot the HDR works better on gcam, but auto-focus seems better/faster on the native camera app. So far I'm just using the Samsung app.
i'm used MGC_7.3.018_Parrot043-v1, with realme 5 config and change awb to s5kgw1, for result its same with app stock like iso and exposure time. but. for night mode i choose gcam. because detail is very good and time to capture didnot take long time like stock night mode.

This doesn't support the wide angle nor the macro lens. It doesn't seem to be a build for the a71 but for the s20.
Who cares about the crappy wide angle lens or 64mp mode? For anything but gcam snapshots with main camera I use my Fujifilm cameras instead.
I need help with using the gcam for astrophotography. Ive downloaded more than 10 version. And none worked.. another thing is when capturing nightmode, it only says to hold still. There is no shutter count down at all. Ive seen thru google that this device can actually do that star shots using gcam.
Please see sample image ig my gcam shot with astrophotography enabled.

So far I haven't found any version of GCAM that works well in night mode and astrophotography. In all the variants I tested, the captures in night sight mode are worse than the night mode of the stock camera. It doesn't matter if you are in night sight or astrophotography, the capture time never exceeds 3 or 4 seconds. And the results are always mediocre. Before the A71, I had the Moto G8 Power, and depending on the version of GCAM, I was able to capture up to about 19 seconds. The results were better with the G8 Power. And both have camera 2 api level 3 enabled. The A71 needs a version of GCAM modified exclusively for it, otherwise we will never really take advantage of the photographic set. Of course, the same cannot be said for HDR + mode. Especially if Lib Patcher has been enabled. Samsung's forced post-processing disappears, and the details really get much better in GCAM. The images are just a little dark, but I believe that a custom xml will solve it.

Without asking too much I would assume that this is a camera fault.. I'm assuming you're using the default camera? You could try to use pro mode and just change the ISO to 1600 and have a longer exposure 5+ seconds.. It'll have similar results although I'd use a tripod for it so it's clear..
If that fails and you've already wiped then I'd say hardware.
You don't have any protectors on your lenses do you?

Well that's good news I see that as a win.
Have you tried gcam and it's night mode? Works a lot better.
Personally I don't use AI unless I'm taking a picture of a document or something specific, for night shots you really can't beat the pro mode, I take astrophotography shots myself with my DSLR and if I tried to shoot using some kind of auto mode I know it would be crap in comparison, it's defo a faff on a phone but pro mode is the way forward..
Does the camera allow you to change lens for night shots? Use the sensor with the lowest f stop.
