Can the note 5 fingerprint scanner unlock like nexus 6p without wake up the device(not pressing home/power button)?
Seem stupid to press and wake up the device then use finger print to unlock
As the fingerprint sensor is actually located on the Home button, I am not sure there is a usability issue here...

Just press and hold the home button. No reason to press then release the press again.

But actually, the fingerprint sensor is so terribly bad that you might aswell just disable it. That thing is exponentially worse than the iphone ones.
Bah. The fingerprint scanner on the note 5 works like 19/20 times for me. Maybe you just need to re-setup yours.

19/20 would equal a 5% miss rate....which would be terrible. Mine is even worse than that....usually 1 out of 4 is not recognised.
I've retrained it over 20 times, I've tried to scan only one thumb 4 times, didn't make it better.
My ipad and work iPhone didn't trigger a single miss for the last 2 weeks....so that is more like 1 out of of 400.
My wife has a note 5 as well (white one) and my boss has a silver one....none of these are better...
Sorry, the fingerprint reader on the Note is terrible and not even close to that on the iPhone.

It's all in how you place your finger my friend. Keep your placement and pressure consistent... it works fine. If that's too much to ask, go get a different device lol.
I see people retouching their iPhone all the time because it didn't register. But whatever.
Note 5 fingerprint reader works just fine for me - each to their own.

Also, as far as accuracy goes, this thing is awesome. I had an iPhone 5s and my wife has the 6. My scanner is just as, if not more accurate than both of those and definitely faster. If you have an issue with the scanner, it's an operator error.

I highly doubt that. Speed is okayish - slower than the ipad Air 2. The idea behind the scanner is NOT to have to place your finger exactly the same each and every time. It is meant to be able to work fine even with a slightly misplaced fingerprint, that is why you scan it on different angles.
Also, there seems to be an issue with the software - I´ve found that using my finger to unlock the device security section (the one with the fingerprint data) will work at a rate of 19/20. Also, unlocking Apps with the fingerprint reader usually works quite well. Locking the screen and then using the same placement usually results in an error - so there seems to be some software issues going on here too, for some reason an unlock from a woken up device does not work as reliable.
However, I have yet to find anyone with an iPhone or iPad that is not happy with the way how the fingerprint reader works. Sadly it´s quite the contrary for the note 5. Such a great device with such a lousy fingerprint reader. I have times where none of my fingers is recognized, not a single one.
I´ve had a chance to play with the Nexus 6P and can say that their fingerprint reader seems to be on par with Apples. Not a single miss while trying it out ~30 times.
But back to the OP. Do what everyone here told - a slight press to wake up the device and then just leave the finger on the sensor.

Doubt it all you want. My fingerprint scanner is just as good, if not better than the iPhone regardless of the position of my finger. Probably because I move my finger while setting it up.
Try this. When you're setting up your fingerprint, start at the tip of the finger, and every time you take your finger off the button, put it back in a different spot, slightly down your finger. Start from the tip and step down to about the first knuckle. Then do the same thing, starting from the inside edge of your thumb (like you're holding it one-handed) all the way to the other edge. The scanner will get a complete picture of your fingerprint and it won't matter the position it's in when you try to unlock it.
Maybe try to re-train but this time varies the finger position on the sensor as you re-train it, this really improved accuracy many fold for me.
Note 5 finger print scanner is fine for everyday use . Mines haven't failed me not once but that's my experience

The key is having the sensor to register maximum number of friction ridges, next time you re-register your print try to go in circular pattern...
For me personally I was having a lot of trouble with it but for a variety of reasons my fingers, particularly my thumb (which was what I was trying to use) are pretty beaten up. Added my little finger, which is the least beat up, anf from there it has worked at near 100%.
I've had my Note9 (Tmo) since release, so about 2 weeks now. Usually a quick tap of my finger on the fingerprint scanner and the phone immediately jumps to life and I'm on the home screen. But today it's acting erratically. Now it takes like 5 or 6 presses for it to register, and that's only after I turn the phone on first (it won't skip sleep and go directly to the home screen anymore).
I tried a rebooting, recreating my prints, as well as making sure the scanner is wiped perfectly clean, and that worked... But only for a little while, the issue has come right back.
Anyone else seeing similar issues?
Do other sensors work as expected?
On my previous Note8, when sensors stop working due to hardware fault, the fingerprints also did not work.
BTW I have not experienced the same issue on my Note9 yet.
Are you using a theme? If so that could be the issue. Uninstall theme and try fingerprint again.

I also have this issue, it's pretty annoying. On the lockscreen, the phone says "fingerprint-sensor not responding, try again later", and that's it. Tried wiping cache from the recovery menu, nothing.
Try typing *#0*# into the dialer and go to sensors test, should be able to determine if your finger print reader is faulty or not there.
Try cleaning the fingerprint scanner or using a wet wipe on your finger. As the lack of moisture is probably what is causing this issue. It happened to me a few times in HK.
I have the same issue.
My scanner is now telling my "fingerprint wet." But my fingers aren't wet, and I wiped the scanner down several times. Like the OP says, it works for 1 or 2 swipes, then won't recognize my fingerprint.
I'm having the same issue with my Note9. In my case, the problem happens ONLY if I had my phone in my pocket more than 1 minute, the fingerprint sensor just won't work, it's not like it doesn't recognize it, it's dead. I have to wait about 10 seconds putting my finger on the sensor 'til it works. I have tried everything. I'm pretty sure it's something in the software related to the phone being in my pocket (not because the phone's been idle), because when I go to bed and put my phone on the table, the next morning I just grab my phone and immediately the fingerprint sensor takes me to my home screen, no problem.

Do you guys have solution to this I been having this issue for a month or so now and i think it is getting worse.
Hi guys, be brave and call Samsung. The phone is under warranty.
They will collect it and drop it off for free, after repairing it and putting your phone back to water and dust resistant.
It took me about 10 days all together, if not less.

I've had samsung repair experienced before my Galaxy s8+ it took them about 5 business days turn around repair it was just software issue.. But with this fingerprint if it's just software glitch or setting i rather do that first but if not I might have do warranty claim.. it always take 2-3 tap for me to work on the fingerprint this is way way slower than my S9+.. Did you have fingerprint issue?
It is definitely not software. Days i have spent uninstalling apps and themes and testing and then resettimg it all and so on and so forth!
It seemed at the beginning that a factory reset is enough, but next day it would start again.
It finally gave up and i have called Samsung, as i do not buy insurrance for my phones and they sorted me out.
I knew it was not software when i have booted the Note into safe mode and it behaved just the same.

Sorry, forgot to quote you in my reply above.
Anyway, now after the repair, the Note responds diferently, it unlocks fast as hell using the fingerprint.
Try erasing all your fingerprints and re-registering them all over again. As sometimes your fingerprint settings maybe corrupted by a OS update.

Mine isn't like that. Fingerprint sensor works once the device is already in use but once in sleep mode for awhile it will take 2-3 taps for it to unlock and it doesnt happen all the time so My issue is sensor sensitivity and it seems to me that the sensor is not getting any power once in sleep mode to save battery that's why it is less sensitive that's just my opinion. But I already made a ticket to samsung and unfortunately the repair center which I dont trust at all the uBreakifix do not have the sensor in stock. So I may have to call in to ship out my phone.

i am and i wish i knew how to fix it
*#0*# sensor test says that the RESET test has failed. I'm getting random reboots while not using the device.

The test shows RESET: Failed. Everything else is a PASS. It must be a hardware problem. I am getting random reboots while on standby when the fingerprint sensor is turned on.
I'm so frustrated with my S10 scanner that I've decided to return the phone back to Samsung. I can't accept it in $1200 phone. I need to open the phone in an instant like I do on my $200 Moto X4, it's slow but it never fails.
My question to all of you, S10e owners is: does the side sensor on 10e works as supposed to? Am gonna take chance with it, I really like the S10 series, great phones, but they didn't make the sensor on 10/10+ right.

I have S10e and the fingerprint sensor is in the power button and for me it is a learning curve, but it unlocks fast. I had to re-register my fingers again after learning how to comfortably put my finger on the sensor.
I have an S10e. Although I wish the power button/fingerprint reader wasn't so high up on the side, it's proven to register my finger perfectly every time. Plus, it has the gesture option like on last year's models. Swiping down on the fingerprint reader pulls the notification menu down. That's pretty neat.
I'm very happy.
I must be lucky on my s10+, postponed update, did not adjust fps settings and it is working really well for me

S10e fingerprint works like a regular fingerprint, more accurate than those under the screen and quite fast (but not as fast as OnePlus 6 per exemple).
It unlocks the first time like 99% with my right hand, but is more unreliable with my left hand.
If you hold your phone with your left hand, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm right handed and was having issues at first, but then I scanned my thumb when the phone was flat on the table and again when I was holding it in my hand and I've had much better success with unlocks.
Only time I mess up is when I don't get the placement just right, but that's more about getting used to under display fingerprint readers than anything.
i'm also very disappointed with this, hated it on the back with with my S8, this is the only reason I bothered upgrading, it only works about 50% of the time as you need to get it right on the mark.
What more infuriating is all the reviews show it working 100% of the time when its clear this is never going to be the case as the sensor is very small and very easy to miss.
effing useless, also considering returning it.
EDIT - i removed mine and put them in again, seems a lot better now, still not as accurate as review make out but now usable for me.
Did you guys try the under-display scanner after the day-one update ? I read it works well afterwards.
I think most people just need to get use to it, my first 12 hours or so I was frustrating as hell but the more I use it the more I'm getting use to it and now its working flawless for me and thats with the screen protector still on. I have both my thumbs and index fingers set to it and they all work great.
its occurred to me what this solution needs, an always on fingerprint icon on the screen when its locked, it will need to be quite dim and pixel shift in order not to burn in though.
Thank you guys for taking your time to answer, my S10 is going back(rma issued) and I've placed an order for 10e it'll ship on 3/14. As great as all those S10 phones are, it's really bad if you can't turn it on.
The position is a bit too high if you're left handed or using the phone with your left hand. Other than that, It's pretty reliable and pretty fast. I'm quite used to side the mounted fingerprint scanner on the Xperia XZ1 Compact and this one is definitely faster.
It also allows you to choose to have it always active (ie. you just need to place your finger on it) or require you to press the power button (maybe to avoid accidental unlockings or recognition). Oh and it also keep the ability to swipe to pull down the notification tray which is handy.
So far I love everything about the S10e except the software...much thanks to Samsung caving in to Google and blocking rootless Substratum. I haven't switched from the S7 to it yet because I'll have to root the phone for the first time to solve that customisation problem that irks me to no end. If, however, you don't require Substratum to be intact, you'll love the phone from day one
I'm returning my S10, the fingerprint scanner annoys me. I came from the 6T and thought the "ultrasonic" would be much faster and accurate, yet it is not. I'm thinking about the 10E, but the screen is a little small.
I'm debating if I should stay with the 6T or get the 10E....
I'm also returning s10+ for fingerprint reader, considering s10e, small screen isn't so much of a turn off as the small battery
the 10e will be my choice as a screen crack or damage can make it not function and what I read about protectors having issues over the scanner - meh... the button method seems far more reliable and ideal to me.
Yall know and update to fix the finger print reader is rolling out to fix the issues. As well dry hands are causing problems, try getting your hands moist then try it. It works much better for me and I don't have the update yet.

There is no such thing as a 100% reliable fingerprint sensor. In fact nothing is 100% reliable everything will at some point fail.
this is now a single frustrating issue on S10. fp is still very poor. Error rate is very high, speed is terrible (huge post fp delay, huge delay during recognition too, the reader literally waits until finger is released). Also coming from 6T and Mi9, which were much better and lightning fast.

Oh yes... the S10 fps rehashed! Been using my S10e for a while now and have no complains – except for the lousy updates distributions on part of Samsung. Securitywise, my SM-970U1 is @ May 1st as of Aug.3rd
Am gonna say the side fps is close to but not entirely perfect, very reliable, still. I use 3 fp(am right handed) Lhand index, Rh thumb and Rh index for an easy use. I can pick the phone off the desktop with my right hand simultaneously placing the R.idex on the sensor to turn the phone ON instantly. Or, I pick it up with R hand and place it in my L.hand palm reaching for the sensor around with L.index – don't even have to look at it, the phone turns On. Am using the R.thumb when I already hold the phone in my right hand but the screen has timed out. And I really love the so-called “small factor size” so easy to handle in and out of the pocket.
But frankly, I really miss the back sensor location, had S9+ and OP6 for a while before S10 now S10e and the back location was the best! Turning the phone On was done almost subconsciously by slipping hand into a pocket and touching the easy-to-feel dimple on the back cover.
The fingerprint scanner on the Nokia 9 is terrible! Seems to only read it 20% of the time. I use face unlock sometimes which is nice but I can't always hold phone up to face. Tempted to just use smart lock with my android wear watch but there goes my security. May end up trying to add fingerprints again for a 3rd time...
Mine almost always works, but I have to apply some pressure to it. It's not like most other in-display readers that work with just resting your finger on the screen.
I have each thumb trained twice on it.
It fails completely with a glass screen protector (at least for me).
Worst scanner. Works 50 percent or less and with multiple scans of same fingerprint. Utterly useless.Ar least the Galaxy S10 plus was fixed with updates and my success rate is 90% + on that phone.

Before scanning, I lick my thumb of index finger lightly, then run them together leaving them just slightly damp (just enough so they don't slide smoothly across the phone screen), then touch firmly, but certainly not hard, on the sensor patch.
Works almost first time every time. I also used this same method when training the prints.

I received my phone yesterday. My fingerprint scanner seems to work just fine. There are a couple times where it did take a couple tries, but it's been nothing like I've been reading. I'm perfectly content with it. I'll also add that it's been working just as well for me with a plastic screen protector on it.
You guys never had a xiaomi mi 5s. If so, you would not complain about fingerprint scanner ?
I've had about a 75% success rate with the fingerprint scanner. I set it up in a dark room and registered both thumbs and index fingers. There are times when it won't read my fingerprint at all, which seems to be software related. Other times, it will say not recognized. In those cases, I've tried to place my hand over my phone as if I'm covering my PIN at the ATM, creating a bit of a shadow or darkness over the fingerprint area of the screen and then trying it, which seems to work a lot more often. Covering it with the other hand might be a fluke, but I am able to repeat the results again and again.
Edit: I deleted my post, because it was not repeatable. Whatever the software issue is, its too intermittent to isolate through physical means alone. Someone with programming knowledge though should be able to see what might be causing the problem and provide some insight on a workaround until then.
Right now for me, it seems to work when its being charged and battery saver seems to affect its success rate.
for me it depends on the situation, sometimes it doesn't work at all. Things like temp etc seems to be influencing the succes rate. my xz3 has a reader at the back and it doesn't work sometimes as well. they are equal in reliability. But if you are used to a Huawei (like the mate 9) it is terrible. I really had to adjust when I got the XZ3 (coming from a mate 9).
I received mine this morning and it performed a system update out of the box.
I put a glass screen protector on the phone straight away and I've had some success with using the fingerprint reader, although not so much that I would like to use it all the time.
These are my observations so far,
- The 'press harder' message is deceptive. I have never got it to work by pressing harder when it tells me to press harder in a spot where my thumb/finger already is. Instead if I use that as a cue to re-position my thumb/finger then I have much more success. When it works, I have never had to press hard at all.
- It doesn't like my thumb very much. It takes some time to find the right position with my thumb, where as my forefinger is fine.

I've been persisting with it and have found the right amount of pressure to make it work more consistently. The message on the screen says press a little harder, and pressing it to the point where it flattens your skin out against the screen makes the chance of success better.
Moseman, i did everything you did, unfortunately its a software issue. You are right about the 'press harder' message, its not true. You don't need to press hard at all to get it to work, which i have been able to test successfully. The issue is not about pressure, its about placement. You must place your finger in the exact position that you placed it when you did the first half of the enrollment. Interestingly, i've noticed that apps that use the finger print reader as part of their login, seem to work much better. Such as ADP app or Bank apps.
You will notice that it probably works better while on charger, and works terrible with battery saver on. I tried many ways to find a workaround to get it to work consistently, but eventually it goes back to working 10% of the time. I believe they will create a fix here soon.

I got a good working scan by holding the phone in landscape mode while learning the scan. Might be coincidence , but i figured since the scanner is the shape of a flat rectangle it might cover more of my finger that way. (in normal use i just unlock in portrait mode, i just did the landscape thing to learn the fingerprint)

So after trying your method, i wondered if enrollment was the issue. Perhaps i wasn't doing it right, and maybe someone else did do it right, so let me know if you did the following.
I deleted all enrollments and tried again, this time with battery saver off (just to rule anything out related to that). I also made sure that my finger placement was exactly as described in the training photo. Originally and before, i had placed the edge of my fingerprints to the edge of the scanner, but actually it wants you to place the middle part on the scanner.
So when i re-enrolled using the exact finger placement the picture showed, it didn't work 100% of the time, but i do get somewhat better overall success with different finger placements.
Anyone willing to test this out?

So after trying your method, i wondered if enrollment was the issue. Perhaps i wasn't doing it right, and maybe someone else did do it right, so let me know if you did the following.
I deleted all enrollments and tried again, this time with battery saver off (just to rule anything out related to that). I also made sure that my finger placement was exactly as described in the training photo. Originally and before, i had placed the edge of my fingerprints to the edge of the scanner, but actually it wants you to place the middle part on the scanner.
So when i re-enrolled using the exact finger placement the picture showed, it didn't work 100% of the time, but i do get somewhat better overall success with different finger placements.
Anyone willing to test this out?

After further experimenting, it seems like the results are only slightly better and this is not a permanent solution.

The way I did it was placing my thumb in different angles from the beginning. Don't have a lot of troubles with it. Some times the light just doesn't switch on. Direct sunlight doesn't help its accuracy. Wet fingers doesn't help as well. But I would say mostly it works
Thanks all and Chaosdark for testing. I still believe that battery saver somehow effects the consistency of its accuracy. I would say it works more often than not with battery saver off. This might be the inconsistency you are experiencing. Can you/anyone confirm it works better w/ battery saver off?
Today I think I've found something interesting, if you go to verification option in the fingerprint section under security and touch the FP scanner to verify which fingerprint enrollment belongs to which finger, I have found that it detects and identifies the fingerprints enrolled easily and quickly and doesn't ask you to press harder as often as on lockscreen ( needs more testing from other users).
This results makes me hopeful that a software fix is possible and in the making according to Nokia CEO how vaguely suggested there will be a fix in an upcoming update.
What do you guys think?

Before scanning, I lick my thumb of index finger lightly, then run them together leaving them just slightly damp (just enough so they don't slide smoothly across the phone screen), then touch firmly, but certainly not hard, on the sensor patch.
Works almost first time every time. I also used this same method when training the prints.

The success rate hit of the finger print scanner is much lower with the lock screen than with the screen saver. While with the screen saver it is effective and quick , it more often than not that with the lockscreen the fingerprint identification is rejected.
Any ideas? solutions? I already deleted and printed new finger print few times already.
I find that it's total garbage. It works about 10% of the time and I've redone adding my prints over and over. I've tried most of the steps others have and find that it doesn't help. Someone said to do a factory reset and no I'm not going to do that. I just don't use it anymore and will probably get rid of this phone soon. I want to use SD cards again and have more memory as 512 is just not enough. The reader on the Note 9 was so much better.

No complaints here. Work 99 out of 100 times on both screens
Can't complain either, working perfect here and very fast, too... Btw with stock screen protector, if that matters....

I am doing all of the above , just when AOD is active the success rate is vey bad , when normal screen saver is on , the success rate is much better.

I was having no issues before a screen protector.. now I don't even use it because I can never get my finger print to read.

Are you using a screen protector/shield?
I have learnt I need to press harder. I used to have a Pixel 2 XL FPR on the back which was really sensitive. Using a phone with FPR under-screen was new for me, you do need to be firmer when pressing your finger down and after training myself for a few days I don't have any issue with unlocking now. I have fitted two S21Ultras (mine and friends)with the White Dome tempered glass and that has not impacted us either.

It's hard to miss where the sensor is as it's pointed out on the screen when using it. As for dried hands that too seems not to matter.
Folks I'm guessing you think you're being helpful when you say that you're not having a problem with your phone as a response to someone who is have a problem. To me that's like me taking my car to a mechanic and telling them my car isn't working properly and them telling me that their car is working just fine. I worked for many years as a computer consultant at a major university in upstate NY and never once did I respond in this fashion because it's pointless.
But he was wondering if his phone was faulty..you being an analyst should realise that if most of the replies are positive that in itself helps him

No , as it was unpacked from the box.
This has started to be an issue on my a.o.d.
Was ok but I changed the icon and it seems to be hit and miss now.
I just double tap the screen and bypass it

My Icons also changed , so that might be the issue.
Problems solved.The cause of very low hit rate of the fingerprint scanner on AOD in lock screen was new icons i dowloaded from Galaxy store.When i installed the original , no more missed prints
No complaints here. But it completely works
