Is this FAKE, or is this a real night video from the p20 pro? - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi Guys! Im looking for a phone that is the best in low light video (not photo!!!)
had an s9 on me a few days ago but the videos were way too dark in the situation i need it for.
now i found this video on youtube, can this be legit, or some gimmick used here?
Huawei P20 Pro - moving in low light : Bucharest at night 4K
the dark places (park, under trees etc) look way better than the s9.
but its hard to believe, i read in lot of reviews that the videos on the p20 pro are mediocre, not as great as the photo quality.
i suspect this was made with DSLR, not this phone....
any opinions? thx?

It might be real...I own one and the video quality is way better since android 9...I will make a video tonight and upload it on youtube and post it here...and let you decide. The light in that video is not bad, because of the street lights,so not so hard to be at that quality. But I always make videos ad 1080 60 fps,it's better in my opinion and stabilization is active.
But I will do it at 4k in a few hours(they obviously put the phone on a stand or something, the video had no shake at all,I will do it by hand,so a little shake will be in my video, the stabilization is only active at most 1080 60 fps)

Please note that the p20 pro does not have image stabilization in 4k. They used a gimball. That is indeed p20 pro, I recognise the wavyness of the video when panning around. However... The video quality is not good. Samsung is better at that.

hey thanks but if not a problem for you, plz make a video in the lowest possible framerate/resolution.
allow me to be more precise. im looking for the phone i can make a usable video in the lowest possible light.
i live in a problematic neighborhood, and if there is some argument that i record for evidence, i need video that is not just a black screen...
i dont need 4k for that, in fact even 480p would be enough if it has best low light sensitivity.
i try to attach 2 examples . THESE WERE MADE WITH S9!!! not p20 pro
1. part of my room with a 15W lava lamp. as you can see, apart from the lamp, everything else in unrecognizable (guitar on the wall, computer desk) you can barely see something is there.
2. garden+street with average suburban lighting. at the end of the video, there is good lighting, but if something is shadowed from the streetlight (tree, bushes) you basically see nothing, just pitch black. you woulnd even see if a person is there or not.
i converted to gif for better uploading but on the original videos the light level was the same, you cannot see nothing in the dark parts.
thats why it was hard to believe in the first post video, you can basically see everything, even in the shadows.

guys it wont properly play the above gifs, and many times just hangs. XDA site problem or its on my side...? thx

I do a ton of recording at EDM shows, rapidly changing lights, lazers, etc, and I've been beyond impressed by the video quality. The details this camera catches is nothing shy of amazing. I also don't bother with 4k, because in all honesty, I won't be viewing the videos on a TV large enough to take advantage of the resolution. So for me 1080P is more than adequate. Plus the steady shot/stabilization is definitely needed at my shows. My only complaint about videos on the P20 is the volume in loud environments. Ideally I should be using a usb-C microphone, but it's just easier without.

Ok,I will. I did not have time yesterday. I will make a video in my room, with light only from pc,and another with the monitor turned off,I have lots of leds so there is some light, but very low.

Here you go,I made a video in my room, the only light source being my pc: https://youtu.be/Hb5nxI_APNA

just 1 more thing. if you turn off the monitor, but put the video in 720p/30 fps, does the camera "see" anything?

There is no stabilization at 1080p 60 fps. You will only have it up to 30 fps.

Of course not, only the leds from pc,but in picture, night mode it can capture a lot more detail than I can see with my eyes.
And the video you saw captured very well,I did not see much more than the camera,it was very dark in the room.

thx, sorry, i was looking into other phones thats why it took long to get back...
i understand your reply, thats exactly my problem. im pretty much convinced that the original video is fake or cannot be made with a stock p20p camera app...
i live in a similar city like Bucharest where the video is made, eastern europe also.
in a business disctrict maybe, but in parks, normal streets etc we just dont have enough light for that
if you check the video you see that everything is visible even in the shadows, for example someone couldnt hide there cos the camera would see him.
thats just not realistic. i watched your footage, and is very similar to s9, although i had less light, but not complete darkness, sort of in between.
yes i know the night photo is great but i couldt find any evidence that it has better low light video then other phones... (apart from that one in the post)
i mean if its that good, how come we dont have a lot of amateur videos, or vlogger videos made at night with the p20p..?
just doesnt add up for me.
ps: i checked, my light was about 1/3 of your white PC screen.

I did not compare it with other premium NEW phones, but it's good enough for me,if I ever want to make a video at night, most probably it will be inside a house,a pub,or even outside is good enough with street lights...if you need more,I don't know what to recommend to you,I did not research enough. But I do know it's better than cheaper phones for sure...and better than my old P9 and my Asus Zenfone 3(which were both premium when they were released).

video and camera fix on way?

Anyone hear if Samsung are fixing the video playback and camera quality?
The video is great in HD but when you watch lower quality rips the film looks great in day parts but at night in movies you can see lots of blocking, yes there should be some as lower quality but not at the level it shows, I tried on my i8910 and the sgsi9000 and the same video in night time scenes looks better on the i8900, I did hear that the reason the sgs has bad blocking is the firmware is not right, the phone is not reading the difference in the shades of black or something.
And camera, I hope this again is firmware as the pics are fine until you zoom, they are washed out and blocky, I know it took awhile before someone modded the i8910 to get the best jpeg code for it so fingers crossed Samsung or someone on here does that.......just seeing if any news on these two things.
Cheers

Emmm..? Great quality in both camera and video playback here...
its one of those things that when you see it you dont miss it again, I did come across a page on the net with a guy speaking about it, its a firmware thing, it will never be perfect as there will always be some blocking with lower bit rips but at this time the sgs shows it up more than it should, from what I remember the guy said it was to do with the graphic chip and it not reading the differences in blacks so rather than a blend with shadows and dark stuff (like a guy running around in a cave say) it shows blocking, anyway this guy said he did something so that it bypassed the chip and the picture was fine....but he did not say how and nor can I find the bloody page again.
Camera wise, well its an old story with Samsung, they shrink there files too much, dont know why and they did not learn from the error with the i8910, it took hyperx and faenil to sort the code out and get better quality pictures, from what I read on here its same problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760540
I love the sgs and hope these things are fixed by them and I dont have to wait for some person with talent to fix it
Ideed, there are differences in quality. Never noticed them.
Well, I suppose it should be pretty easy to fix if anyone actually got to do it (I know they even did it on symbian, which is like the most complicated os ever).
For the quality of video - never really tried low quality files, so never noticed a thing. But from description - it could be something to do not with drivers or anything, but with screen itself (all the deal about true black, which we dont see on normal lcd display). But thats just guess.

Picture and video quality

Omg
I'm trying to capture myself as accurately as possible
When I'm taking pictures with either camera or recording video the picture and video playback looks right.
When I go to transfer them to my computer the quality doesn't look the same as when I took the picture, my skin tone is off, primally, quality etc just looks not as good is it losing quality or something. ? I can be in my vanity mirror, take a picture and see two different people
Makes me self conscious when I'm looking back at them, even though I know it's not an accurate depiction of me but it deters me from wanting to use this camera because when I'm viewing the picture on the device it's much different on computer
This is dysfunctional
Maybe your pc needs an upgrade to the graphics card. 4k screen for it and some software bumps and you will probably see what u see on phone
BAD ASS NOTE 4
The note is 2k, my computer is HD. I only record in 1920x1080, and the camera's are usually on the highest megapixel setting. I just wish the replication was more accurate.

It be to hard to say what it what. You can have hd that is 720 or hd that is 1080. Both hd but night and day difference. Not really sure what you be looking for. I take pic it looks just as good on phone or pc.

I hope we are not talking about selfies, lol.
But yes, I will suggest you buy an actual camera if you are trying to go with all that real world qualities and what not.
You can also also buy Camera FV-5 from the playstore, fractions of a real camera and see what that can do for you. It is the most realistic camera shots I have seen out there You can also do a lot of customizations with it that you can with actual cameras...I'm not talking about samsung gimmicks or the many gimmics out there such as blurr and what ever else is out there.
P.S Procamera is also good.
P.P.S...sure its not your lighting? My note 4 camera depict me quite well -cheeky smiles-
Let me know how it goes for you!

Lol no I'm not a fan of selfies and bathroom mirrors I use my tripod 85% of the time. I want to be satisfied with the picture and just upload it and not have to tinker with the photo because it just doesn't look right. But you have a point some lighting it's great others it's just like who the hell is that Lol. That's why I just record videos instead, never really been photogenic but in person I get many compliments it's so funny up me Lol but I rather in real life where it counts then social media
Haha, definitely ...beside, we are our own worst critics!
Happy Holidays!

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the LG V20 come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Wow, talk about impressive.
Well, the shadow definitely confirms there's a phone on his head. That's seriously amazing to even consider doing that and it does look really good.
I see the wide lens and what he's doing (aside from the views) being amazing, but that quality is horrible. ?

It's shooting at 120 fps! So the shutter speed is incredibly fast and you will need A LOT of light. This is standard with any slow-mo recording. You can try bumping up the ISO but the reality is, you will most likely be doing slow-mo only when you have sufficient light with a sensor this small.

None on my phone. Can you provide a time stamp which u see the artifact?
I took the V20 out to my son's baseball game today. Wasn't all that impressed. Maybe because I'm a noob, and have to learn about using the camera and video functions and capabilities of the device. My V20 was set at FHD 60, or aka, 1080/60fps. I was posted near 1st base. When you launch the camera, it goes to auto mode. When action would occur, I would hit the video button, and it would start recording. The footage came out very bright. It was a sunny day today with occasional cloud cover.
I won't compare this too my Note 4, or my Hero4 Black that I have been always using at the baseball games. I may have left the "AE-L" feature enabled, or I should have just been in manual video mode to begin with. I will pay attention to the settings next outing, and hopefully it's just user error the first time around!
Will post here too.

Question - in auto mode it has the possibility of doing 60 frames per second on video. If I go to manual video mode and make it do it's auto thing it dumps down the frames mostly to 50 fps and to make it go up you need more light and then it goes up, first it begins to push down iso until 50 then it will start effecting the FPS number. Why is that - why would it go down to 50 fps and not just down to 60 fps?
-
Apparently it now goes to 60 frames by standard - no idea what why it changed and how - it correctly do 1/60 now and not 1/50 - maybe it was the update.

UPDATED! Shock horror. Mate 10 vs Mate 9 display!!b

Ok maybe a little dramatic but still - a little disappointing.
I have done a few tests. Played the exact same HDR YouTube videos at the exact same time with my Mate 9 and Mate 10 one above the other in landscape mode. The Mate 9 is MUCH brighter than the Mate 10 on maximum brightness. I have factored turning off auto brightness and turned off Smart resolution etc etc. They also have different colour temperatures even if you set them both to warm, default or cold - they still look different.
I have tried HDR videos on both phones and I see absolutely no difference. I studied the colours so hard. I see absolutely no difference between a 1440p video and a 1080p video playing at the same time. In fact, most times the Mate 9 looks sharper and more vibrant. Also shockingly the Mate 9 offered for example 1080p 60fps option on a video whereas the Mate 10 offered maximum 720p 60fps on the same video. 1080p was nowhere in the list. What the hec! Battery at 100% so no resolution switching to save power.
Basically, it is true 1440p is wasted on a phone. There is no difference on a small screen such as a phone. All these people saying "yeah but X phone only has a 1080p screen" don't realise that it doesn't really matter. It all looks the same.
So I hear the Mate 10 is HDR 10 compatible and yet I don't see it with my eyes. If I am doing something wrong and someone wants to correct me, please DO. I want to be wrong.
What are your tests and opinions?
Despite all this, I still love the phone. ?
I take it all back.
I have discovered YouTube does not show HDR10 output even if the video says so.
ONLY the built in video player supports true HDR10 content.
I downloaded these HDR sample videos from an XDA post:
https://mega.nz/#F!jYwlgbBA!piXwD8sYa7zjsRtjStuAyw
Play them in the default video player and they look stunning. I took a screenshot of a paused video and when opened up in gallery, the colours were bland compared to the actual playing footage. Proof enough.
Phew! This phone is amazing!
Do you get higher peak brightness when in vivid mode ?
AFAIK - Currently Netflix is the only third party app supporting HDR 10 for this phone
Youtube coming soon though,
So, you might want to change your thread title, LoL

Of course it's the same because mate 10 comes preset to 1080p lol. And stop listening to tech reviewers the are dumb, only way to see it 1080p and 2k is to use magnifying object like camera or glass etc. I have iPhone 7 plus, LG G6, Moto Z play, Essential phone and the s8 which I sold because of burn in, I don't see the dots pixel on any off them because I don't look for it, they all looks the same some are brighter and vibrant than others. That's it.
Another thing, the max brightness on auto is superior than the manual max brightness. That happen on a bunch of smartphones.
So, it's dumb to compare max brightness with the auto setting turned off.
The best way to compare it, is going outdoor with the auto checked on both and look which one seems brighter.

Wobbly when recording in FHD. (Updated with link)

I was at a school play today, and wanted to record some of the songs, what I noticed was that the recordning was very wobbly, if you can call it that. It also had big problems with the dark areas. It looks like it's being dragged a bit. Like shaking. (But not from holding the phone)
Here is the clip:
https://youtu.be/SATdaEeJ0ns
Is there something I can do to make this better, or?
I had the same problem with 4K when I tried that later. I was sitting while recordning.
Thanks for all help

You do realise that YouTube stabilizes videos right? It looks perfect
In regards to your question, no there is no OIS for 4K, it exists only on 1080p 30fps.
EIS may be added later but it won't be anything like OIS

But if you look at the video clip at around 15 sec in, you can see that the people on stage get "wobbly", can't find a better word haha, and the drapes on the left side also. It's not the stabilizer, I think... I can't see it well on my cellphone, but when I look at it on my pc screen I see it well. Never had it before.
In daytime there is no problems that I have seen. It's on multible clips I have from the same evening.

Are you always playing via YouTube? Because as I said YouTube will automatically stabilise videos and it can give a wobbling appearance as it moves the frames together.
If you're also seeing this on your computer played via an internal media player like VLC or win media player then I can't explain it.
