[Q] Is this normal ? 4G to 3G to H+ when calling? - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

I have a unlocked s10+ with a ATT sim card, when I try to make a call, the HTE network symbol changes to a lower speed and eventually H (edge), however the call does go through?
Just curious if anyone else was seeing this ?
Thanks in advance!

Its normal if you have VoLTE disabled or if it isn't available. You can check in settings > connections > mobile networks and check if you have VoLTE enabled.

Don't see it under those options, thanks for the reply !

Maybe your carrier doesn't support VoLTE yet, are u from the US?
This is how it looks on my phone.

Ask your provider to re-provision VoLTE setting to your SIM. Also sometimes you may have to wait for an update for he settings to get applied. Happened to me on my S7. Carrier had activated VoLTE but phone s/w didn't support it. After an update, everything worked.

data is limited to H or 3G (if you are lucky) during calls
thats normal as the phone is using bandwidth for voice calls and cannot offer same data speeds
4G is all about data transfers so you would never really make a call over 4G it will always be over H

ATT doesn't allow VoLTE on the unlocked version. You will need to flash the carrier rom to enable it.

Appreciate everyone's feedback, I spoke to my carrier, and they (Level 2 Tech.) claimed that they (ATT) and Samsung were working on a device performance update, but were not sure of the release time, I will see if they can address this issue, else will need to reflash with carrier rom

I recently switched to ATT and I have VoLTE on my S10e unlocked exynos. Had it on T-mobile too. I have a VoLTE switch under Connections>Mobile Networks. Snapdragon maybe different, but it definitely works on a stock unlocked device.

I have LTE during voice calls. Your phone/carrier may not give you this option, but others have it.

At&T doesn't fully support unlocked phone learned that the hard way when i bought my 1st unlock note 8. Internet was slow same signal your getting H+ no wifi calling it was a mess returned it and bought an At&t note.

Curious, what made you go for a Exynos phone? I thought they were inferior to the SD versions and LTE bands missing for the USA

Future custom roms, root. The exynos version isn't missing any LTE bands that I know of. I get great coverage and speed. I don't know how they are inferior to SD. Performance and battery life are good.

Unlocked U1 devices will not get VoLTE or VoWifi with AT&T. Some have had luck flashing the AT&T firmware and CSC on prior generations, but there wasn't a guaranteed way to make this work.
If you need these features, youre best off buying the AT&T branded version, or buying an international phone that enables VoLTE without requiring carrier validation. (Which will likely work)

If your provider supports VoLTE, then you can as voice is transmitted as VOIP call via LTE network. You should see VoLTE icon next to 4G icon if your provider supports it and is provisioned to your SIM card.

Which international version is best for tmobile?

I was thinking about getting an international phone but there are a few versions N930F/FD/S/L/K . Which would be most compatible. As I understand it, the downside is missing some of the bands for data. 3g is the problem I think. Can anyone confirm this or input any additional issues.

N930F/FD will definitely work on T-Mobile...
I think WiFi Calling and VoLTE won't work and you might miss a band or two but it will work just fine.

I believe 4g is ok. The some bands for 3g have reduced speeds.
N930F has all Tmo bands. WIfi calling and VOLTE will not work with stock rom, but will if/when custom roms come out.
Did anyone go this route? I see couple for sell on ebay.

I dont' really care for wifi calling as I can forward my calls to Google Hangout/Voice.
can you clarify the need for VOLTE?
How to activate google hangout/voice I never used that feature since I have a note 3 and voice and data simultaneously is always been available thanks

Very odd as both worked in the S7 FD version I had for a bit. The requirement isn't bands but that the TMO sim has to be in sim1 not sim2. If it's in sim1 then both work. Also, VoLTE is hidden and always on if supported.

Anyone on n950u1 phone and metropcs?

I bought the 950u1(but didn't receive it yet) because of the fear of samsung closing the ability to cross flash u and u1 variants and I know metropcs(tmk) has u1 firmware.
Will the unlocked u1 variant have VOLTE and wifi calling out of the hole rather then flashing the u1(tmk) firmware?

Hey bro. I know nothing about Metro but my info may (or may not ha) help you.....is it gsm or cdma? I just bought N950U1 to use with a Straight Talk byop AT&T sim. I have been with straight talk for about 8 years and have been an android root junkie since I got my note 3....then the note 4....and now this beast note 8. I would like to think Im fairly knowledgable about the Android system but I have also been trying to sort through all the info about U vs U1 firmware and carrier flashing stuff but I cant quite figure out where to make my first move, or if I should, flash carrier firmware. I would like to try Oreo beta but I damn sure don't want to brick a phone I have zero warranty on. Hard for me to get over the idea of having to buy another $1000 dollar phone outright. From what I understand, carriers like straight talk, metro, family mobile, etc. Is that the sims are basically like a carrier unlocked phone. The service provider pays the big carrier (also uses their branding) to use the towers. They call it piggy backing. So the service is exactly as if you would be paying straight to the big carrier but without the contract and unnecessary BS. From what I have read, all the firmware is exactly the same multi CSC. So when you flash firmware and then put your sim in it actually does it's own thing through carrier. I couldn't get the January security patch update to show until I added "fota" to my apn and then rebooted and like magic it was there. I pay 60$ a month for unlimited data and have used 41 GB as of today since January 18 with not even a slight throttle. Because I have had straight talk so long I wouldn't know what to look for as far as ATT extra csc features. But if you are willing to find out and let me know I would be happy to check my phone for them. I do have download booster in settings. I only know because with my note 4 sometimes i would and sometimes i wouldn't depending on what rom i was on. Butni don't see volte. Maybe all this ramble was a little helpful. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Im probably gonna copy most of this post and start a thread or at least ask in the other threads for some more info.

It's gsm. Mvno of T-Mobile. I have an unlocked xfinity sm-g955 s8+ right now and had to carrier switch/cross flash to tmk "u1" firmware to get the two features running. Someone told me that they got those features running on T-Mobile "u" firmware and I tried it but it did not work for me. I saw the volte switch on the menu but wifi switch did not show up in the T-Mobile firmware.
I was just wondering if the multi-csc loaded some of the features on first boot up on a like "u1" branded variant.

Greyed out only Wi-Fi is working right now on metro I'm assuming all carriers
Gosh why do the carriers in the USA make it so hard to flash firmware and enable WiFi calling and VOLTE. In Europe its as easy as going on sammobile and flashing the carrier software in odin for the exynos N950F/FD variant... Some networks (like EE in the UK) are even firmware agnostic and just allow WiFi calling and volte on most firmwares including the unbranded BTU. It's as crazy as verizon and sprint sticking to CDMA :/

Both Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE is enabled by default. I'm not sure if I'm using VoLTE when I'm making calls old phones I had had a vo in front of the let signal bar when making calls on the Samsung j7 I'm not getting that on the note 8. If I look at history calls there is a Wi-Fi picture when I make a call on Wi-Fi. But not on VoLTE
Hope it's working get better audio calls now when on phone my data speed is still downloading at 30mbs when I surf the web and talk at the same time

You can test it by making a call without it enabled, it will drop to H+ or h. If you have it enabled and you make a call it will stay on LTE the whole call.

SM-N950F Slow Network Speeds On AT&T

Hey there fellas! I recently purchased an international Galaxy Note 8 to use on AT&T here in the U.S. Everything appears to work fine except the speed of my network. Normally in this area I would be getting LTE speeds around 30-40 up and down. With the Note 8 is displays H+ (which I understand to be LTE, but I may be wrong) and I get around 5-7 down and often less than 1mbps up. Some have suggested setting the preferred network time to LTE/UMTS auto (PRL) which was already selected on my device. Is there anything else I can do to get the proper speeds? Thanks!

On all of my international versions H+ was 3G and 4G was LTE. Depending on the area with 4G I would get 20 - 50 megs down on AT&T. On my 950U1 my settings under #*#*4636*#*# I have TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS selected by default and mine shows LTE and depending on the area up to 100 megs down.
H+ is 3G, or 3.5G for some carriers

Ah, that would explain why my speeds are so slow. Thank you for clearing that up. I attempted to select TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS as my preferred network mode but for whatever reason it will not apply. When I reopen that settings menu it goes back to whatever option was selected prior to that. Do you think it could have something to do with the selected APN? I have ATT Phone as my current APN, but at the store they were trying to use ATT Nextgenphone, which didn't work.

I would do all I could to get the Nextgenphone APN working. It is what I used on all my international phones.
Took the Note 8 into the AT&T store today and swapped out the sim card without any luck. As usual they couldn't provide any help beyond that. I also I can't select TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS as my preferred network type for some reason. I contacted the person I bought the phone from and they claimed they used it on Verizon's LTE network without an issue. Very strange.

Would you mind sharing what your CSC on your Note 8 is? I might end up flashing whatever firmware your phone is using, as mine is currently running a firmware for French phones. Not sure if thats the issue, but its possible.

When your look for the firmware look for 950U1 for AT&T. I would look around for a thread on flashing other regions first just to be safe.

I may be totally off here, but wouldn't that be an issue as the AT&T variant uses a Snapdragon SoC, while my device uses Exynos? Another concern for me would the ability to root as well, which is one of the reasons I decided not to buy an AT&T branded phone. Thanks for your help so far man, I appreciate it!

You are right. There is no AT&T firmware for your phone. Unless they changed something with the Note8 you should still be able to get 4G. I did with my international Note4, Note5, and Xperia Z5 Premium models. My son is using the Note5 with an Exynos processor and gets 4G speeds comparable to LTE speeds in the area.
Had this problem as well way back when I first got my 950F.
There are solutions. But you would need one of 2 things.
1. Get At&t to add your IMEI# TO their database so that they can provision your phone correctly.
2. Get another At&t branded phone's IMEI# that is LTE COMPATIBLE. and call them to provision you phone with that #.
My phone is getting full LTE speeds and VOLTE.
But I had them put in the IMEI# of my older Note 5!( which my wife is currently using)...
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I called ATT and gave them your suggestion and they claimed that it would not work. They said provisioning my new phone with an IMEI of a different phone would be temporary up to 2-3 weeks. Have you encountered this issue? I'm assuming not, so I'm curious as to how long you've had this fixed. Thanks again man

SM-N9600 (HK/Chinese Version) Lack of VoLTE and support for CDMA

OK, I got my N9600 today but immediately noticed VoLTE is not supported on current software version. Also, mobile network speeds (BT Mobile) are half of what they are on the OnePlus 6 which is my other phone I use.
I am very inexperienced with bootloader, ROMs etc and was wondering if it's possible to flash to firmware which supports VoLTE and CDMA too! As my plan is to move to Japan next year, I hear it's only CDMA over there!
Links to guides are much appreciated!
Kind regards,

Does N9600 with Snapdragon And 2 sim card or just one sim card?

Galaxy A70 will stop working starting Feb. of 2022

Final update: The galaxy A70 is no longer compatible with att due to 3g shutdown. Its because of the bands. However, the A70 WILL work with T-Mobile as 4glte hd voice/Volte. Tested and confirmed.

It's what AT&T chooses to support that in part determines this.
This is what confuses me. 3rd paragraph down.
According to the specs of the A70 and the settings. The A70 is 4g LTE with Volte enabled.
AT&T has to configure each model's software to their network for it to function properly is how I understand it.

You are 100% correct it's also the same way with T-Mobile and Verizon. I just did a very extensive research on this subject and am making a video to help everybody understand but as for the Galaxy a70, unless one of those carriers provision the a70 to work on their Network with voice over LTE which is highly unlikely, by the end of 2022 the a70 will not work on att network. What a shame considering that the a70 is compatible but just not provisioned by the network. Now thats what i call power tripping.
OK, I'm confused. This phone supports 4 LTE Volte... my bad.
It may continue to work, not sure.

Ill try to clear it up.
The a70 is capable of HD Voice/Volte and 4g Lte networks. So the device could actually work but the key word is could. The provider has to enable Volte on their end. Even though its enabled on our end and has the hardware, the service provider has opted out of enabling it on their end. Because of this, the galaxy a70, all variants, will no longer work with att, sprint or Verizon by the end of 2022 starting with att in Feb of 2022.

Wait and see. Give them the hammer if they fail you and find another provider that will.
If you're a conservative it's a win-win

If your device is a Galaxy A70, even if you have a custom rom, you will be affected if you have att sprint or Verizon as your network. Maybe not now but soon starting in February. The easiest way to know, call your service provder and have them run your imei for compatibility.

Its doubtful that any network will adopt umts to migrate to Volte. They would have done that already. The providers seem dead set on weeding out unlocked devices is my guess.

That's not true. It's the model not that it's unlocked.
It's hard to believe no carrier supports it. Which brings me back to it probably will keep working.
Google it a bit more...
It supports 4G LTE and Volte. right? Is it missing the needed bands? Something I'm missing?

Lol na i was making a sarcastic remark about the unlocked. They seem to frown apon us custom developers. And as for what your missing, yes it supports 4g LTE and Volte but the issue is with the network providers. They have to provision, (which means sending code to your phone to enable it for you to connect to their network) the device and unfortunately the galaxy a70 all variants did not make the list. Even though you have volte turned on in settings and your device shows 4g, when you make a call, because the networks has not enabled it for your device, you see that its no longer 4g but rather 3g/H or H+
I obtained this information from att and samsung directly but this also includes the other carriers later this year.
One might buy themselves more time by switching to t mobile but thats slated to end in march i believe.

That's hard to believe. Wonder what the FCC has to say about that?
Lol, or are they getting their palms greased too.
Update:
After much discussion with att and T-Mobile, the galaxy a70 will work but a new sim card is needed. A 4g/4glte only sim card is needed from your carrier. Currently most have a 3g/4g sim and the sim prioritizes 3g for voice calls. The new sim will resolve this issue and a new device is not needed. Ill be getting a new sim today and will confirm.

Went to att and got a new sim, unfortunately, it did NOT work. The system shows the A70 as a 3g only device.
