Immersive mode - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has found a way to get full immersive mode.
I know you can hide the navbar but I'd love to hide the status bar as well and make it so that apps go around the camera hole.
I don't want to hide the hole but want to put the whole screen up so that I don't see in every app the time and all the status bar icons. Thanks a lot!

I want that too, but apparently no app is able to do that on my Galaxy S10. Hope to see that feature available soon!

I wanted to hide the status bar, to shift the whole screen up, not just hide the icons ☺ however I did download some cool goodlock things thanks for reminding me that goodlofk is still a thing

Nova Prime can do itView attachment 4724540

Does it work with apps as well? I guess this is not that doable since I'd be probably missing some buttons that are over there...

Yes, of course

Please send immersive mode requests to Samsung via feedback, or by emailing them. Right now the adb commands create annoying black bars instead of extending the screen.

I currently don't have my S10 yet, but use 'SystemUI Tuner' on my OnePlus 6 to do immersive mode.

Doesn't work with s10 it appears a black bar...

Technically you could remove the black back by going into Settings>Display>Full Screen apps and selecting all to be full screen instead of auto. However this makes removing the status bar useless since even though you don't get the black bar you still do get a bar that's the color of the app. Green for whatsapp for instance. So you're not actually getting any more screen real estate, just hiding the status bar which I find it easier to do through adb instead of any other app which requires you to give more permissions hence to type more in the terminal.
I'm looking for a way to hide the status bar and have the screen go up and around the camera cutout, just like it works on any other phone which doesn't have a camera cutout

I'm afraid not, still looking. I tried several apps and adb. Even wscan command on adb which was something I used to shift the screen down to hide the navbar before pie. Nothing seems to work

Strange because apps can go full screen, like Netflix and YouTube Vanced. Just that stubborn black shaded status bar won't shift.

Yeah that's the same thing I thought of. I guess on apps you would lose some keys for instance on WhatsApp the ability to make calls... But I still would want to hide the status bar

Samsung makes these awesome panels but makes its almost impossible to remove the static elements opening us up to burn in. Toss us a bone Samsung or use a different display tech!

I opened myself 2 threads about this on xda and one on reddit XD this is soooooooo important to me but no one seems to really care about it much! no one could help how can it be, that folks buy a S10 because of it's infinity display which has very little top and side bezels but are completely fine with a huuuuuuuge statusbar that's just a software bezel because of the bad software.... don't get me started about the possible burn in issues or uneven wear.
the usual adb command don't work
Sammy's own settings in the settings app where you can choose between automatic and fullscreen does nothing
the only thing that worked for me was app cloner so far. I cloned apple music, relay, spotify and tumblr and the difference that it makes is soooo huge!!!! Sammy has to do something about this. Getting all that space back, seeing the content scroll behind and around the punch hole and up to the frame which let's you notice how thin the top bezel really is.... yes on most apps some element get's get blocked by the punch hole, but if you are familiar with the app and know that there is something you can still touch it and it works, or what I do is, triggering one handed mode for a second pressing it and move on. for me that would work. Sammy should put a disclaimer saying, can cause some issues with certain apps and let us use all the apps we wan't in fullscreen/immersive mode. It sure does look better and that's the way I'm gonna be using my S10 after rooting.
please if you have more tips how to get immersive mode, let me know.

Yes of course! like I mentioned before I always use my apps in immersive mode but for once I own a device that's not rooted yet and therefore hasn't a dozen of custom roms with the ability to tweak settings. And because the usual adb commands do nothing I remembered that app cloner had a bunch a display settings which you can mess with. And viola! It has an option to flag apps as immersive mode apps and it actually works! It seems to use a different hook/way to force apps into immersive mode and the result is just beautiful!!! Now you can really enjoy the Display of the S10.
Let me tell ya, after using apps in immersive mode for a hot minute and going back to the stock way sammy intended for us to use the S10, I have to say sammy did only a half hearted job on this. Yeah hardware side is nice but the software side is lacking and not utilizing the hardware. It seems like they didn't now any better and settled on a huge arse statusbar. Maybe because this isn't iOS where developers can develop for specific hardware not like on android.
The Downside? some elements do get in the way and require some kind of a workaround. In this case I settled on using one handed mode which brings the top half part of the screen down revealing those blocked elements by the punch hole. This works so far very good and I'm already used to it. Some elements peak out behind the punch hole so you already know there is something, in this case you can still touch that area because even the punch hole has a digitizer in that area.
S10+amoled theme+Substratum black theme+apps in immersive mode= In my opinion the best way to use this device and forget/never notice punch hole ever.
This should be a bigger deal and more people should talk about this. xda should cover this on the Frontpage.

Android 4.2 and how I feel about it

Google’s latest Android version 4.2 may not be a major upgrade from 4.1, but it sure does come with unfinished work and some improvements to be done. This update feels like it’s in beta with random restarts and lag issues. Here’s my list of improvements that I’d love to see in 4.2.1 - Warning: Some of you may not agree with the following.
Notification Bar + Profile Bar:
The new Notification Bar brings some improvements to 4.2, with the setting shortcut placed nicely on the right corner for easy thumb access; instead of on the middle-left, like on 4.1
But, there’s a missing link to the 2nd Notification Bar; instead of being toggle buttons, it’s just another shortcut to the settings page. Why give us more shortcut icons?
Lock Screen + Widgets:
Yet another slight improvement. With the changes to the Roboto font and alignment of your security pin-box, the system seems to look sleek, professional and welcoming, rather than the clunky look and feel of 4.1
But, the new Lock Screen Widget feature in 4.2 redefines everything I said above, this makes the once welcoming screen look childish, unattractive and cluttered. Sure, it’s fun to play around with for awhile, but it kills the purpose of a “Lock screen”, and that's a bad thing.
Image: http://bit.ly/ScjVr2
Camera + Photo-Sphere:
The updated camera UI is stunning! With the new setting chooser, it’s easy to access everything with one hand, unlike the old messy UI where everything was scattered everywhere.
But, this new Photo-Sphere functionality is just another gimmick, waste of space and effort. Sure, people will use it for the first 2 weeks, but eventually they’ll move on to taking “regular” photos like “regular” people; instead of lining up blue dots into a Pokeball (If you don’t see a Pokeball, I feel for your childhood).
Image: http://bit.ly/RRuoIv
Play Store + Extra Download Page:
What’s up with this extra download page? How about we focus on “Google Playground” where I can save my games and not lose them when I have to factory reset? Or challenge my friends on Google+ with scoreboards? Oh yeah, the store needs a major design overhaul, like... right now!

Same thougths here. I miss the TapToToggle-HoldToEnter-functionality of the S III

100% agree. Google-Cloud for save files, app settings, etc would be very nice
I felt like Lockscreen widgets and quick settings are responses to what the community are customizing. You have a wildly popular app called WidgetLockr, and all skins are placing toggles on the status bar. I can see how they are not willing to copy what others did directly but really, those are the best solutions out there. So I'm still gonna root, install widgetlockr and power toggle for those stuff.

Lockscreen widgets aren't my type of thing, like OP said, it'll be fun for a few weeks then just get boring, never used lockscreen "widgets" that came with sense either. I also favor 4.1's status bar+toggles, compared to 4.2 which is slightly still an attractive approach to switching things up(or on...pun intended) and making more room.

Honestly one of the little things that drives me crazy is the rotation of the camera. I don't see why the whole screen has to rotate to landscape when you turn the phone. Why can't just the onscreen controls rotate instead of the whole frame? Seems pointless but then again its a small insignificant issue.

I'm not sure how lock screen widgets defeat the whole purpose of the lock screen? The whole point of the lock screen to me is a buffer screen that stops you from accidentally activating your phone by making you perform specific actions on the screen. The new lock screen still does that quite well.

Nah, the lockscreen widgets allow you to look-but-no-touch. The appeal is still there, in that you cant accidentally mess things up with screen widgets in your pocket because they require unlock before you can mess with them.
Except for the camera, but there isn't a whole lot of bad that could be done with that.

I'm 31 years old; I understand references to Snarf and Optimus Prime. Poke-whatever did not factor into my childhood.
EDIT: I guess I should actually post something constructive:
- I also wish the second notification bar was more than just shortcuts. Why aren't they buttons? I put the Power Control widget back on my phone for the first time since in quite a while
- I don't ever imagine using the lockscreen widgets; at least not the ones that are available now. I absolutely despise the bolded first digit in the clock widget. Despise it. It looks ugly and I can't understand why they did that. It's stupid and I'm getting mad just thinking about it again. F***.
- Haven't tried photosphere yet; it's not something that I think about
- Extra download page...I dunno, something else I haven't thought about at all.
My own thing:
- Swiping keyboard is the bees knees.

For me this is no gimmick at all. I frequently have to resort to drawings and painstaking email descriptions to describe physical spaces in my line of work. As imperfect as Photo Sphere is at the moment, it's a quantum leap ahead in terms of camera usefulness for me. It's quite literally a 'worth a thousand words' thing.
The only lockscreen widget I have is a clock from HD widgets that looks nicer than the stock one and shows battery %. Other than that I don't see much point to it.
The settings pulldown on the n7 did annoy me at first as it is positioned where I would normally have pulled down for notifications. I wish it would toggle WiFi/Bluetooth rather than going to settings. Maybe short press to toggle long press for settings.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Fully agree on the notification toggles and lockscreen.
Notification toggles should work like they do in CM, press to toggle, long-press to visit the settings.
Without getting into a debate on the usefulness of lockscreen widgets, the design and layout of the lockscreen is convoluted and messy. Definitely needs to be refined.
Two places to swipe from (Lock and Home button)
Interface to add widgets is odd, why do they appear small on the clock screen first after they are added?
Way too much flashing with the white boxes, feels like it's perpetually in an edit/drag to adjust mode
I say at a minimum, drop the soft-nav keys on the lockscreen and return to have Google now being a swipe upwards and kill the flashing white boxes.

I honestly feel that Google did send this update out as an almost unfinished product, and will be fixing this later. Only question is, how long will it take. Those with Galaxy Nexus', are updates pretty frequent?

First thoughts on X4 Pie

So I was curious what people thought after they got their Pie updates? (I'm still waiting)
-Is it faster/slower?
-Any change in battery life?
-Thoughts on Google gestures?
-Any other thoughts?

Same speed for me.

Gestures are worthless.

Seems about the same speed/battery life for me.
The recent apps view is a big step backwards to me, the side scrolling cards is not as easy nor helpful as the vertical view was. I still think Samsung's multiwindow mode is better than Google's and I do not think 9.0 improved it.
Adding a dark theme is nice, but implementation is inconsistent. I am surprised basic things like the settings pages do not use it. But it is nice for the keyboard, messages, and phone.
I'd agree the new pill gesture setup isn't great. The motorola fingerprint gestures is nicer.
The tiny settings icon in the notification drop-down is annoying enough I've given up on it.
Other than some other gui changes (icons and the like), it isn't that different from 8.1.
That's kind of the impression I have been getting for a while. Our phones already have great battery life and moto actions.
I am losing excitement for this update...
It was faster, the battery runs faster than 8.1, I do not like gestures, even though I feel that applications still need to be polished for Pie.
Return to 8.1 for these last two dimensions.
Just installed the update tonight. Performance-wise, it feels the same. Don't know yet about the battery life, since I just got it about an hour ago.
I also found that the pill gesture setup was not up to par. It doesn't add anything extra to the original setup. It still occupies the same bottom screen space.
Dark mode is nice, but I wish it was implemented system wide instead of just by individual app. But probably this depends more on the app developers. But even system apps such as settings don't always have the dark mode.
Lastly, to access the gear settings icon, now you have to pull the notifications bar twice. Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't it used to be just once?

Yes. I noticed this too. The gear was accessible from the notification bar.
I pretty much agree with what others have said so far. Based either on actual speed improvements, tweaks to the animations, or the update placebo effect, 9.0 does feel a bit snappier switching between apps than 8.1.
The only thing I don't like is that the update seems to have made SwiftKey fonts bigger which is mildly annoying.
Pretty disappointed with this version of Android. The recent apps is now destroyed. It's a worse way to interact with your recent apps. Don't even bother with the gestures. Totally half baked. One button nav is superior in every way. The notification pull down is just hideous. The clock is on the wrong side and no way to change it. Why there's no way to change it is beyond stupid. The dark theme option is extremely inconsistent. Won't even darken the settings window for instance. You now have to pull the notification share down twice to access settings versus only one with Oreo. Seems that we've lost a lot of functionality and are being told it's a feature. Perfect example are the volume controls. What a joke.
The whole thing just looks like an iPhone rip off. And the general graphic style sucks. Material design is dead.
Performance and battery seem to stay the same. Overall a poor effort from Google on this. Going to have to root this thing so I can deal with some of the idiotic things they decided to go with. Worst Android update since I can remember. Can't wait to go back to Oreo.
A couple more observations. The volume bar is now on the right side of the screen, next to the volume buttons. It also allows direct access to sound settings. I don't mind this as it feels more intuitive to me. If you long press the power button, now there's an option to take screenshot. I like this since I don't have to fumble again with two hands to take screenshot.
A big change is split screen. Previously, you can just long press the overview button to use split screen. Now you have to tap the overview button (or swipe up from the pill, if you use that), then long press on the icon on top of the app, then select split screen. If you use split screen a lot, this change is annoying to say the least.

That change throws me off. I keep looking for the clock on the right side. And I agree with you; Google copied some of iOS UI while kept some of their own, making it an inconsistent experience.
Fingerprint Lock
I can no longer lock my phone using the fingerprint sensor. I think this is a bug because it is selected in the "Lock Screen Preferences" settings but it does not lock the phone. This may seem like a small thing but it completely disrupts how I'm used to using the phone. I'm using the Google Fi Android One version.

It is disabled in A1 version. You can get the option enabled by removing the following prop:
ro.mot.android_one
If you are using Magisk, there is a module that you can use for this:

Confirmed that this works on Oreo and Pie.

This update is underwhelming for me little changes that are just seemingly random and pointless. I'm especially disappointed that the update broke Google pay , prior to pie I've been taking ota's fine with no impact on gpay.

Yep tried that. It's weird because I can unlock the phone with my fingerprint but I can't lock it again. It's obviously recognizing the fingerprint but not for locking purposes.

It is disabled in A1 version. You can get the option by removing the following prop:
ro.mot.android_one
I toggled it off and the fingerprint lock works. I would be curious to hear from others...

Note 9 One UI issues

Okay guys.
Just got the official Pie update and it seems that a couple of features are missing.
First, long press "recent button" to split screen in two. (When using full screen gestures), like, there is no way to get another app while listening to YT with screen gestures.
Also, "swipe fast to right" to switch to the last recent app is not working when "Gesture Hints" are hidden
Also, I cannot make apps go into the "Window mode", like swiping from the top will not minimize apps, it will just throw notification bar.
Am I perhaps missing something here?
All that you've mentioned are missing and very annoying.

No, I found these, I just don't feel like swiping and tapping 5 times to get split screen instead of one single long tap.
I thought that split screen or at least previous app would be long swipe to the top, like with home button when you can activate Google assistant.
I just hope that they will bring that option in the near future.
I really miss fast switching to the previous app.

Sadly, samsung implemented a multiwindow close to how google do it and killed their great android versions multitasking ability. It's really not only annoying, but strange why they removed something that they were praised for in android 7 and 8 and before. At this point I better get an iphone as the multitasking is the same (irony).
To show you how rushed (and this sound even funnier given how much time they had) the android 9 is, I will just tell you that you can swipe home-hold and it will run google assistant (like the older home button hold). It's like common sense that they could had done that to recents too - swipe up and hold for instant split screen, but nope, they didn't. Never mis triggered the assistant when going home, so this is not the reason.
Also they removed the menu between two split screen apps, so if you want to switch their places (for example youtube and viber so you can watch the video that is on the bottom while typing) - touch luck b*tch, now you need to close both and open again in the right order rofl (also there was popout there in the same menu). They removed so many key functionalities on a phone promoted BY THEM for multitasking and staying on oreo is not an option for obvious many reasons.
Edit: also the exynos note 9 drop frames in the UI like it did @ oreo if not worse (after it's settled down)... so you got also that.
Issue that i have is in settings, security if i deactivate the Find my Device option, when i restart my phone the option has been reactivated. Also sometimes the full screen gestures so working.

I took advice from another XDA user*: I installed an app called Edge Gestures https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ss.edgegestures which is helpful in restoring a fast switch back / split screen method.

Yeah sorry Samsung but your one ui is garbage, looks horrible and I can't stand looking at this navigation bar everywhere, no auto hide option at all now? I switch to the gestures option instead but swipe up for recents doesn't work at all. Also no update to their own good lock app and without that my phone looks even more like trash lol The notification panel is horrible, just a big white block with some blue buttons, my good lock one was so nice, also back to the boring old task switcher I was looking forward to this update so much, but it looks like arse...

It's not.
It's international n960f Exynos version, but anyway there should not be any difference in the software itself.

There is also a workaround with this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb.fluid
It's even more prettier, but to be honest, I'm tired of using ADB, rooting and so on.
I had note 2 and note 4, rocking custom roms since beginning, but now I just want everything to be original, and logical.
I have no clue what the f were they doing while in beta, I mean, come on, no fast switching to the previous app if screen gestures are hidden.
*Amazing*

Feature and productivity wise it's really a big downgrade. Also those notifications that take the whole screen... seriously. No thought put at all. All is done considering galaxy s10, I am sure of that... and especially nothing was done considering the note 9, even the rounded corners are matched for the s9 rofl.
Only things that a peeving me on Pie is the fact that I have never in my life used Duo or installed it but in my settings/accounts it shows Duo, I remove it but after rebooting phone its back??? that and the inability to deactivate Find my Device, I deactivate it, but after rebooting phone its reactivated again... any ideas (maybe with ADB to sort these 2 issues out?)

screen flickering when calling
Hello guys!
I have updated to one ui on my international galaxy note 9
I have an issue, the screen flickers when I make a call, it's very annoying, anyone facing this?
thank you for sharing information <3 :good:

Move clock/time to right side?.

Any way to move the clock/time to right side? Insert rant about android 9.
The usual samsung methods don't work. The SystemUI tuner app does not work either. TouchWiz is missing from the Beta+Rooted+adb permissions given version of the app. The custom entry keys (middle/right_clock_position) do nothing both on or off.
Also for the phone dialer, is there any way to change to one click to accept instead of the slide method?
ROG/ZenUI is really lacking in customization.

Don't think there is currently a way to move the clock. It bothered me too when I first got the phone, but now after a little over a week of use it's perfectly fine, I'm use to it. Not sure about the dialer tap to answer instead of slide, as I prefer slide to answer because it's less likely you'll accidentally answer an unwanted call.

Thanks, though now there's no way to show the 120HZ but not the auto-rotate indicator. Depending on if you have free or pro, it'll either show both or neither.
I guess nothing can work properly. It's about to be expected since it was never updated for android 9.
Thanks though.
EDIT: it's even more of a buggy mess, the temporary notifications don't disappear ever (message received, downloading item, etc .
Hrmm? Yes they do.
I've attached screenshots
It does not for me. The icons are stuck there after the notification ends. Are you using EdXposed and Flat status bar indicators v5.1.3?
I also have system tuner UI installed which may interfere with it.
EDIT: It turns out SandHook is more stable than YAHFA in this case.

Can't hide it in chrome.
Some games go full screen, some don't.
You can get apps that hide it, not tried any though
it seems to be app dependant.

Well that's a pain in the ass
Maybe I'm missing something but isn't that where the hole punch camera is? Without that wouldn't you have a hole in the app that obstructs the picture? I wish all apps did that.

It's down the game developer to choose what they do. As someone has said it would mean the hole punch is in the way. Wouldn't be great for all games
I've been finding the height of the status bar (as well as the black bar) pretty annoying.
I'm sure there will be a way to get around this (i.e. immersive mode) - might require root though

Google removed the wm overscan function in Android 11, so ADB command and immersive mode don't work without root.
The hight of the status bar is the only thing I don't like about this phone. Makes look cheap.
It's as thick as the notch on the iPhone!
My Note 10's status bar hight is 40% thinner than the Pixel 5. I think if Google had the front camera at the centre instead of the corner of the screen the status bar could be thinner.
Hopefully there will be a non root method soon.
So there's still no way to force all apps to display full screen?
There's a lot phones with the same camera hole, but going full screen as a charm! Its a bad idea to say, its up to game developers. A lot games have nothing in the camera place, but still have a cut black line in landscape mode. And only on the pixel. Im ready to root, but don't know how to get rid of that cut. How to force full screen in landscape?
I'll be waiting for a non root method...
