FiLMiC Pro - Huawei P30 Pro Questions & Answers

Has anyone tried using FiLMiC Pro with the Huawei P30 Pro to adjust for the oversaturation and lack of color accuracy on the main camera during video? Mine is still on order but I'm hoping the issue of red tint can be resolved with a 3rd party app.
Sent from my SM-G975U1 using Tapatalk

Good question, I need to know that. And I want to know did Filmic Pro enable "raw videos" recording? Because in Mate 20 Pro is not possible.
I really need to know this. Thx a lot

Ran the compatibility test on mine:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/k8uss1hBRbJRDy1s7

You can just use the Leica 'smooth' color mode option on P30 Pro to get cinematic effects video & less saturation.
Less hassle & save time to edit later. At least for me, as i dont have the time to edit it lol.

Coincidentally, confirms my thoughts that the sony sensor in the P30 Pro isn't capturing at a full 960FPS for super slow, only at 240 and then interpolated to 960

So this means P30 Pro can record in RAW?

Im very sad because they can make very good slow motion. Even 1080p with 960fps.

I have no idea, I've not got the Filmic Pro app, just installed the compatibility checker for people's info if they didn't already have the phone.

I have filmic Pro. Where do I specifically check if it's raw. It allows Hevc and log v2.

I don't know either because I'm new to the app. Still waiting for my P30. How is the issue of oversaturation on your device? Can you try FiLMiC and see how the video looks if you take the saturation down about 25%?

Did you check if it allows for log v2? Can you select the log curve and the image really changes in its appearance? I cannot do that on my device and I was reading rumors that the Kirin 980 somehow blocks the Log recording. Seems there is a similar problem in the Mate 20 Pro.
Maybe you could attach a screenshot from flat vs log v2 in your app?
Thanks already for the reply!

I can choose the Log V2 option but I can't see any difference in any of those curves no matter what I'm aiming at outside or inside. Seems it isn't working

Okay. I think this is going to be the solution! Thank you. The main problem is red so the best way to see is people's skin tones, or something that is red. However it also affects all shades of red, which includes brown, and I can see a significant change in the bush in the video to a more natural shade. I have been dying to find someone using FiLMiC. This looks like an important improvement.
Once I have the phone next Wednesday, I will do some extensive testing and try to post the most color accurate settings. Thanks!

You'll see in the screen shots in my link (taken from a review video) that the stock color palate is completely out of whack. Look at the biker's face for example or the color of the sky or the red on the building in the second pic.
http://imgur.com/a/DJ5YfFD
My information is that the latest updates addressed some of this. I think FiLMiC will actually solve it once I have a test pattern and can dial it all in to a color accurate setting. It's mostly people, brick buildings and anything that has red, like a stop sign, tail lights on a car, stop lights etc. I will get a few test patterns and spend a day getting everything accurate . I'll send you the settings and you can put them in as a pre-set so you'll never need to adjust. While most people don't want to spend the money to have the full featured app, for those of us that do it might completely save an otherwise great device!

Hellboy spotted in the first picture Anyway, which firmware are you on? Never seen the red tint being this bad on mine though. Lastly, does the video stutter when horizontal panning whilst using Filmic Pro ?

I didn't notice too much red on my stock camera either

It's possible that the latest updates fixed a lot of the saturation issue. That's great info. I see you have the VOG-L09 which is what I have coming as well. I don't have my phone yet, but the red issue may be a result of early software. It's mostly found in the review videos which were all shot in Paris at the launch. I do however think the FilMiC Pro video you posted seems a more realistic color palate than the stock one you posted so everything points to positive results. I've got a whole thread on the red tint and stutter on video going here in the "guides" section.
To answer the question asked before this, I don't think FiLMiC will help with the horizontal stutter? Unless @compunerd3 sees something improved in this area?

I don't notice a stutter in horizontal panning in either stock camera or Filmic pro. I'll try some proper footage later on or tomorrow to compare and upload but first hand I don't notice it.

Want to purchase new One; purple camera question

I am looking into buying a new HTC One but, before selling my S4, I want to know if all One's are plagued by the Purple Hue camera issues?
Is there a way of checking this before buying?

not all One, I have an early model and did not experienced this issue at all. Check to buy a newer model (refer to s/n #). Newer models comes with Omni Vision or Sharp cameras that are supposed to be ok.

No, but there's quite a high chance on the pre-November phones.
Just FYI, I bought mine in October. It was pre-installed with 4.2.2. On the second day, the camera was PERFECT. I don't frequently use the camera, particularly in low light. But a month later, this issue was, well BAD. When I first noticed this issue, I already got the 4.3 update. I think the 4.3 update intensified this issue. I've only flashed 4.3 and 4.4 ROMs, so im not sure whether these updates aggrevated the problem. Currently, mine is in the service centre. Once its back, ill notify you with the improvements.

Just buy nov/dec, because the ones before have the purple tint with the ST Microelectronics module, the nov/dec are Sharp modules(the best by far) and then jan onwards they've been using omnivision modules without Optical image stabilisation and with comparatively poor low light performance.

I'm just saying that it's best if you get the Sharp module. ST WILL give you pink tint, later if not sooner, and Jan ones don't have OIS, which will hinder your ability to take super-quick, sharp shots while moving. You can make your choice. I'd go with Nov-Dec. Better go to a retail shop and see the serial no. Look for HT3B/HT3C (or any other alphabets like FA, SH etc before the same numbers) 3 indicates 2013, B=Nov, C=Dec (Hex)

I've had both sensors(just got an omni ov as I was plagued by purple tint), as far as stabilization is concerned, I honestly can't tell a difference between the original ST and the Omni. Using the Omni OV now, as far as taking pics and videos of my daughter who is constantly running around, there is no more shakiness present than before.
I haven't read the difference of the stabilization techniques, but for me the Omni is fine.

Also, the Butterfly S, One mini, and Max, all uses the same sensors as the One, but I believe they don't didn't have any form of stabilization in those phones, so it leads me to believe the OIS is controlled not in the sensor itself. But I'm just guessing here. Attached is my sensor.

Can you do one thing for me? Can you start the camera, then flip your phone over, and watch the camera carefully, while gently jerking your phone. Does the main round sensor inside move slightly for a few milliseconds (don't worry, it's noticeable) to accommodate this movement? If it does, then HTC is using a special OV4688, tailor made for their own needs, which is very unlikely. Otherwise, this is my conviction: do the One Mini, Max, Butterfly S have the pink tint problem? No. Did they ever have any problem? No. Does any of them have OIS? No. My conclusion is that all use the OV4688 sensor with EIS, and maybe you mightn't have noticed, because OIS helps capturing sharp images for those who don't have a steady hand, or when the camera is moving, not the subject, so speed of the subject wouldn't matter. Just in case, I'll go over to the One mini forum and ask someone to post their sensor data.

Nexus 6P Manual Camera recommendations

If you would like to see a video review of the app just let me know.
PROSHOT REVIEW
So I just wanna update and say that I bought all the above apps trying them out for an hour or so. I refunded them all and decided on ProShot! Below are my pros and cons of using ProShot, I'm only reviewing this one because it's the one I stuck with and liked the most
PROS
Very Beautiful UI, the buttons respond immediately to my presses and most with subtle but nice animations.
Settings are very organized, The Manual camera features are all feel accessible without feeling overwhelming or cluttering the User interface.
Hidden Manual Focal Length, It comes in handy since the Nexus 6P doesn't always know how to lock onto the focus properly
Custom Settings Presets, haven't used it yet but you can have 2 presets for your custom settings.
Easily Crop Photos, the settings lives at the top of the screen change between different aspect ratios (which I use often)
The work space, I mentioned before the wonderful UI but you also get a amount of space to work with because of all of the transparent elements in the User Interface.
Special features, Exposure bracketing, timelapse, and a cool one (Light Painting) light painting is still in beta and is extremely buggy but once it shifts out of beta I could see it being my favorite feature!
Cons
The Auto Focus, tapping the screen to auto focus does not work currently in manual mode
Manual Exposure, I believe the dev posted hear saying it was a google bug but right now the feature simply does not work.
The Gallery, there's a gallery button in the corner but the images are very slow to load. Use your personal gallery app.
Updates, The app is a little slow to receive updates. I would love for Light Paint to come out of beta.
Final Thoughts
The app is pretty amazing and very polished. One of the most polished of all the Manual Camera Apps I have tested. It has enough features to keep you satisfied in the mean time while waiting for the updates to come. I mentioned has a beautiful transparent UI which allows your much more working space than other apps. The special features are fun to tinker with and with time lapse you and video recording you don't have to download a separate app to do those things.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[[[OP]]]
Was super excited with the Camera2 API back in the Nexus 5 days
Now that I have a Nexus 6P, what are the best Manual Camera apps? I'm mostly lean towards UI & features but the question is, what do you guys recommend for manual camera picture taking goodness?
Thanks!

Hi! I'm the dev of ProShot. HDR+ is not available yet, and HDR only works on certain devices (mostly Samsung and Motorola from what I've seen). I'm working on my own version of HDR, but don't have a solid timeline on when it will be ready.

Proshot. If you have kids running around it's the best. Proshot is the only one I've found that can do shutter priority. Every other camera2 compatible app I've seen forces manual iso with manual shutter (full manual mode). Proshot can do manual shutter with auto iso. I think it's a hack bc it doesn't always hit the set shutter speed perfectly but it works well and gets close. Decent interface too.

What do you mean it doesn't always work? If the shutter is a few ticks above or below the selected value it's likely a rounding error in the displayed EXIF. Say you choose 1/25 but it appears as 1/24. The actual value is probably 1/24.999.
Alternatively, say you choose a shutter speed like 1/2000. These phones aren't precise and the image sensor might expose the scene for 1/1997s. That value is stored in the EXIF not as a fraction, but as nanoseconds: 500751ns. ProShot's camera roll then tries to convert that value back to some human-readable fraction, and through some guesswork and approximation might display 1/1989s.
Hope that clears it up!
Can you please explain what setting are you using in proshot to get the best results when the subject is moving fast like kids or dogs?

There are some limits on the demo version; you can use full manual controls but the pics are watermarked. I wish I didn't have to do this, but man piracy is really bad on Android. The app took almost a year of my life from me so it's sad to see so many people stealing.
The current demo is a bit out of date and buggy. I'll be releasing a new version tomorrow fixing a lot of lingering issues (as well as bug fixes for the main app).

It's going to depending on your lighting, but throwing ProShot in either Manual, C1, or C2 with ISO set to AUTO and a shutter between 1/60-1/100 will do a great job of freezing motion so you won't get blurry faces. If you're indoors in a dimly lit space dropping to 1/30 is probably the lowest I'd go, though you will get some blur then. And always keep flash off

someone named nsmal, above said the auto iso feature didn't work properly, was he referring to what you just explained or something different? and thanks for the explanation, and i understand piracy is an issue definitely, I'm just concerned with buying a app that didn't suit me but I will def take the watermarked version for a run tomorrow since you say it's full featured
Also, MUCH MUCH RESPECT for not abusing the permissions! even the ones at that bottom no one really checks, much appreciation :good::good::victory:

Probably what I explained, the rounding errors can be confusing haha. The demo update will probably go live late Tuesday night (USA time) so I'd say hold off til Wednesday to get the best impression :good:
I tried to keep the permissions as minimal as possible, but I might add analytics soon (simple data points like does anyone use the Light Painting mode? [to help guide my dev priorities]). That will require internet, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to add that in a way that doesn't make people upset

[Guide] Low Light and Long Exposure Photography with One Plus 3

Hi Everybody,
To be honest, I am very much amazed by the Camera of One Plus 3, It takes amazing shots in low light(provided you adjust exposure)
I have been tinkering with my One Plus 3 Camera for a while and found the Manual Mode in 3.2.0 Update quite usefull.
Here are some of the Pictures taken with My Device,
1. Macro Shot
https://imgur.com/84HjJ1X
Camera Used: Google Camera Manual Focus
Exposure time Auto
ISO Auto
After Pic Editing- Used Big lens to increase Depth of Field.
2. Low Light Night Photography
https://imgur.com/C2wHNaf
Camera App- Google Camera Focus set to infinity
Exposure time- 7/2500
ISO- 160
Cropped RAW DNG.
3. Low Light Long Exposure
https://imgur.com/4crrlMl
ISO 800
Exposure Time- 2 Sec
Edited RAW in Snapseed.
I plan to capture milky way, But I live in a city. Too much light Pollution
So Here are some of the apps I would recommend.
Proshot Pro for manual settings
Biglens for DSLR like DOF
Snapseed- Raw Editing
I just purchased proshot and had to refund it because it's so buggy. I've never seen an app with so many issues. ?

Black screen, crazy issues with zooming, the UI breaks (icons get all jumbled up and the viewfinder has fragments of frozen images), changing ISO doesn't give any preview so you don't know if the image is too light or what.
One thing that did work was the ability to turn image stabilization on and off at will.
Any difference using the one plus camera app with manual mode?

If you know how to use a camera in manual mode, it can change everything even if you don't have the aperture settings.
If you are talking about the noise treatment or sharpening, it don't change anything.

Shot a night sky with a lot of stars in a pitch black night.
Exposure Time 30sec
Iso 1600
Focus Manual to Infinite
Layed the device flat down on a surface with the back facing up and used the volume button as the shutter.
Note this is a jpeg wihtout editing or anything just the post processing the device does.
Manual mode OOS Camera (OOS 3.2.2) :
ISO 800
Focus : Infinite
Exposure Time : 30s
Layed the device flat down on a surface with the back facing up and used the volume button as the shutter.
In a pitch black night (new moon), in the country
Milky Way :
Here is the original RAW converted to JPEG (max quality) :
And here the RAW after post-processing in Adobe Lightroom converted to JPEG (max quality)
I'm impressed about the camera's quality !

Very nice results indeed with a phone and such a small lens. Stacking more raw pics of the same sky area before processing with lightroom/photoshop should help to reduce the noise.
On windows DeepSkyStacker is great for stacking.
I would love myself to experiment with different cameras apps/different processing however it seems (at least the last time I tried on OOS) that only the stock camera allows slow exposure up to 30s.
Anyone tried with cm and the latest camera improvements ? I know the OOS stock camera has some issues on custom roms but what about 'Snap' camera ?

Thanks for the advice, it's the first time I shot the Milky Way, I didn't know that such software exist
But I didn't understand the part about Flats (PLU), can you explain it to me please ?
Btw I tested all the ISO, and my favourites are 800 and 1600 to do night photographies.

Hi. Well there are a lot of settings and options in this software. It's generally used with DSLR and telescopes. You can ignore flats and darks for now and only stack the 'lights' frames.
I suggest to read the faq on Deepskystacker website.
There are other techniques for stacking, using only photoshop for example. I reckon Deepskystacker is probably overkill for mobile astrophotography.
I have some astrophotography experience with a DSLR and a telescope but never tried with a smartphone. Mainly because smartphone cameras were pretty bad until recently, also long time exposure is relatively new on mobiles.
Have a look at this article too.
http://www.lonelyspeck.com/photographing-the-milky-way-with-a-smartphone/
I will try myself to experiment when I have some free time and clear skies.

Okay,
I took again few photos last night, with the same parameters as before.
This time, I used the noise reduction technic, with image stacking (Photoshop, 5 pictures) (Thanks @ _Man0waR_ for the tip )
Here is my first night photography with this technic. I took others with ISO 1600 but I didn't have the time yet to do the post-processing ^^
Here is the original RAW picture (ISO 800, 30s exposure, Infinite Focus) :
Here is the stacked RAW (5 pictures) :
Great noise reduction !
And here the processed RAW (I wanted a more natural look as the previous one) :
Very nice shooting of the Lyra and Cygnus region It's impressive considering it was totally impossible to take this kind of pictures not so long ago with just a phone.
Stacking definitely helped to reduce the noise.
You should try to shoot the Sagittarius area (if you can, it's quite low in the sky). Adding some foreground, trees, mountains can make some really artistic pictures I suppose.
Well done !

Yes, I want to try to shoot another area of the sky but I don't have a tripod to hold the phone yet. I actually just put the phone on a car's roof Yeah it's artisanal
But I'm considering buying a trepod, the photography interest me more and more, and I would be able to shoot the sky not only vertically ! And other landscapes ^^
Ohh wow, oh wow.

Woderfull, more please. Dessert at night? or am I asking too much?

So about that "terrible camera quality" on CM13 running on the OnePlus 3

While I love CM13, the "poor" camera quality always had me coming back to OOS... but I had heard so many great things about SultanXDA's version of CM13 that I had to give that a try. After some problems with the ROM, I decided to go full cm13 nightlies, but was super disappointed in what I saw coming from the camera (noise, noise, noise... even with denoise enabled).
Desparate, I loaded up some of my favorite third-party apps and ran the tests again... holy hell was I surprised.
"Note: All images were shot using the latest firmware at the time. They are all 100% crops of a larger image of a messy room I work in... all were taken using the respective camera apps with default settings - focus and exposure were set to the white cards."

So if you're getting tired of OOS, I suggest giving CM13 another go =)
But one thing I have noticed in CM13 (and it will hopefully be fixed in a new build) is that the noise suppression bug we had in earlier version of OOS (and apparently one that came back in 3.5.x community builds) is in CM13 when shooting video. Also, OOS has faster shot times. Quality is pretty much the same though.
Why don't you try this?
Only noticeable different that I see is that OOS does seem to have better exposure, looking at the back wall on the top along with slightly less noise.

Yup, just not as fast (is near instant on OOS)!
I'm going to continue experimenting (I.e HDR photos), but I'm so happy to have the camera quality back! CM13 blows oos out of the water as far as I'm concerned.

I've been sticking with OOS for the same reason. I'm surprised that the OP3 didn't post which app he used though. I want to find out before I make the switch, especially since we have to flash old firmware to get the home button to work.

That's a shame. I thought it sounded too good to be true. I'm running CM13 on my Redmi Note 3 Pro and my wife's Moto G, and it would be nice if I could run it on the OP3 too. If this is going to be an ongoing issue, it means we're at the mercy of OP for updates. Given that the OPX only received Marshmallow this week, that's not a good thing.

Video Quality & Color Accuracy

Can anyone confirm whether or not the video coming from the P30 Pro is dramatically oversaturated? I have seen several reviews where the video seems outstanding, with great exposure, color accuracy, detail and stabilization. Then I've seen video that looks like this...
http://imgur.com/a/R23NfM6
And it scares the hell out of me. Wondering if any of the fresh updates correct this?
Sent from my SM-G975U1 using Tapatalk
It's not oversaturated but it has red tint.
I was planning to get this phone but I'm waiting to check more reviews about videos colors problem, and the weird thing is no one mention this bug in any review so far(all paid reviews lol).
My guess is as a photographer it's a hardware problem and not sure if it can be fixed by a software update.
Huawei replaced RGGB with RYYB in their camera sensor, the green filter is missing so nothing can compensate for this red tint you are seeing.
Even i saw some video comparison on YouTube and the blue for the sky look crap.
Check this one at 0:20
And this one at 6:23
Again i hope this can be fixed by software.
Edit : i just saw this review and he's talking about the bad colors at 5:40
