How to keep Whatsapp alive (did try every "legal" trick in the book!) ?! - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

I am with CLT-L29 on stock 9.0.0.236 I noticed that recently (maybe after some recent system or app update) Whatsapp gets killed if the phone is on idle for longer time, say 20-30+ min.
I have the following set:
* Battery/App launch/Manage manually - all options enabled for Whatsapp (and only this did the trick in the past)
* Special access/Battery optimization/WhatsApp -> Don't Allow
* In Recent applications screen I have swiped Whatapp down and now it is with padlock and not being removed from recents when pressing the dust bin.
* Also did try to kill process "Power Genius" that I read is Huawei power manager - but I don't think this can be done without root
* Also did uninstall/fresh install of Whatsapp
Am I missing something?

Did you try rebooting after setting to manual in battery settings?

Hi, I had this for two days, after that it has started working perfect, wasn't just whatsapp for me either. Think some sort of learning system in emui is broken with regards to regularly used/priority apps. As you, I went through all menus.... Twice.

Twice?! I did it maybe more than 20 times!
Unfortunately it did not improve... I played with this over the last weekend, still yesterday evening and today morning - whatsapp web was saying no connection to the phone until I wake it up or open Whatsapp on the phone.
I will let it be for the time being (since out of ideas and don't want to reset the phone just for that). But it is driving me crazy since I use whatsapp for work as well and during the day (also in the evenings) I am checking every now and again if whatsapp is still running...

Same for work. I thought maybe it was to do with me using an always on music widget while I'm at work but it carried on working fine when I got home suddenly. God knows why then

Are you sure it's only WhatsApp?
Try those too:
Settings -> Battery -> More battery settings -> Stay connected when device sleeps -> Enable
Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Data usage -> Data Saver -> Disable

Well, I mostly use whatsapp... At one point email notifications were also delayed a lot (Gmail), lately it is better...
I noticed that it mostly happens when the phone has been idle (out of the pocket sitting on the table) for long time 10-20 min.
Those were already set as suggested:
Settings -> Battery -> More battery settings -> Stay connected when device sleeps -> Enable
Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Data usage -> Data Saver -> Disable

Make sure you set it to manual and all 3 options are on.
Now go to settings-apps-apps-3 dots in the right corner top-special access-battery optimization - find whatsapp and press allowed.
After that reboot in recovery and delete cache.
If it doesn't work then sue Zucc

Oh yeah, reinstall whatsapp after doing the stuff you did. This will fix your issue

never had any issues with Huawei and WA. the only thing had to do was to select that WA will be handled manually (no auto battery management for this app) and to not kill the app after phone goes to sleep

The Restless Soul -> didn't you mean "Don't Allow" - since this is the option to remove whatsapp from battery optimization - screenshot attached? (if so, I have tried that with no improvement).
I did try whatsapp reinstall already and cleared phones cash. But will clear the cash once more...
Most definitely - once the phone goes into deep(er) sleep whatsapp (and probably other background apps) get killed.
Also noticed yesterday that Gmail too, delayed an email (I received it 40 min after I got it on my desktop) until I started using the phone...

It was the same with me in the beginning...
Not sure when exactly it changed - I am now on 9.0.0.236
Strongly considering killing the Huawei power management application as per the below guide, the down side - will no longer be able to see the power consumption details:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-20-pro/themes/remove-powergenie-to-allow-background-t3890409

Yesterday I left my phone for more then 2 hours just laying on the table...
I got 1 missed call from Whatsapp and my Gmails delayed until I opened the Gmail application (by 2+ hours)... so it is not only whatsapp - problem with push notifications of any sort when the phone is idle.
Today I did:
C:\>ADB shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.huawei.powergenie
Package com.huawei.powergenie new state: disabled-user
Let's see what will happen...

[Q] Gear 1 no longer receiving notifications

Recently I had to do a factory reset on my Note3. It retained Root ok, and I used Titanium Backup to restore everything. Afterwards there were two things that no longer worked one of which is: Notification are no longer being relayed to my Gear1. Other data is being relayed: example - the weather appears correctly in the clock; apps like RunKeeper and Vivino work properly, S Voice works fine, alarm clock messages appear ok - indeed everything works fine except that I no longer receive any notifications.
I've done the obvious such as checking that notifications are turned ON in Gear Manager, and I've done the less obvious such as uninstalling PushBullet because some say it intercepts notifications at a very high priority level, but still I get no notifications come up on the Gear 1.
I reckon that most of the value I get from the Gear1 is in receiving notifications.
Any ideas and suggestions most welcome.

I'm using the standard SMS app that came with the Note 3 - I've not installed anything for SMS.
The other problem is that Tasker and Secure Settings between them are no longer able to turn the Pattern Lock ON/OFF. There are several combinations as to how this can be done. Normally I use the one based on the Xposed Module, but I've tried all permutations and some report an error attempting to turn off the Pattern Lock, and some don't; but either way they don't succeed.
Out of interest, I did the factory reset because my Note 3 for some reason suddenly would no longer stay locked onto my home WIFI - it kept dropping off and using up my data plan. I tried loads of things to get around that but nothing worked apart from the factory reset.
I had a Titanium Backup of everything, so I did the reset, checked I still had root (which I did) and then restored everything with Titanium Backup.
Afterwards all was seemingly OK but not the Notifications to Gear1, and not the Pattern Lock switch.
I tried the following to get around the problem but none of the ideas worked:-
Freeze all of the KNOX modules
Uninstall Pushbullet (I had read somewhere that it makes a very high priority grab for your notifications)
Uninstall the Gear software and go back to a really early version of Gear Manager. That didn't change anything, so I'm back on the latest Gear Manager now.
Cheers
Steve
Forgot to say - pretty important really - it's not just SMS notifications that are no longer coming to the Gear 1 - it is ALL notifications.
Apps like RunKeeper, Vivino, TasGear, Samsung Voice etc all communicate properly but NO notifications whatsoever arrive at the Gear 1 any more.
Cheers
Steve
do you have a problem with saproviders application? freezes or something, or battery draining on Gear ?
I have a Galaxy S4 DUOS , and rooted SVA rom and i have a high draining on Gear and no notifications from SMS/MMS application.
My GalaxyGear is unusable - it discharges after 5-6 hours
Maybe root on Phone or different Rom is responsible for that ??
I don't think I have a problem with th Saproviders app.
Battery life has always been 2 days on my Gear1. However since I've turned off the arm movement detection it is managing 5 days on a charge.
Presumably you've tried doing a reset on your Gear?
Cheers

At the beginning i don't have this problem.
I don't know when its starts (maybe after update Gear?)
.....
Yes - reset Gear and S4 - no improvement
reflash rom for S4 and gear - no improvement.
After install gear Manager , when Gear connect to the S4 I have a notification "application saproviders has stopped"
sorry for my bad English i hope that you understand what i am trying to explain.
I'm in agreement of the likely cause of the gear manager problems with kwiatki75. I'd clear cache and data then uninstall saproviders. Before launching gear manager which will then reinstall saproviders. It's definitely been discussed somewhere in this forum. If that doesn't work do the same with all the gear components leaving gear manager to last then fresh install gear manager.

As for secure settings..... I don't use any kind of lock screen but I do use secure settings to remove the key guard opening the phone. I've found you have to do some specific things to get the tasks to work.
A1 secure settings screen and lights on (I use 5 sec a2 will function immediately)
A2 wait 1 sec
A3 secure settings key guard disabled
A4 wait 1 sec
A5+ your task
Last A secure settings enable key guard.
I think your advice is sound. Before reading this I used Titanium Backup to restore SaNotifProvider and its data back to Jan 2014. That fixed the Gear Notification problem.
System Settings ought to work as I've not changed my previously perfectly working Tasker scripts. However I notice your suggestion indicates forcing the screen on and waiting 5 secs before attempting to disable/enable the Pattern Lock. I'll give that a go and report back what happens.
Cheers

The first action is just screen on time. It doesn't affect the speed of the action. I'm not even sure it adds to overall screen on time. The wait (under task) are 1 sec. I think the task description is something I posted maybe in tasgear......

At first try to add these apps to all possible whitelists of Huawei power management apps. It should not be cleaned by RAM manager and should be left not closed when screen is off. It helped here.

I put greenify in protected app and for now is ON in accessibility. Last 2 day working ok.

Yet another EMUI "feature". Hating when it happens to me as well, though I do have mixed luck with whitelisting the apk in question (where ever you can - why the hell do we have both the battery keep-running-with-screen-off feature, and the "ignore optimizations" crap? And what does this even do?).

Same here with Roboform password manager on Mate 9 with EMUI 5.0 . All system settings give it permission and exemption from optimization. But accessibility is turned off after a very short time of the phone screen being off. There has to be something strange going on.

Strange this has not been fixed.
IMHO Huawei or EMUI should let us manage the system whitelisted apps..
It is obvious that the phone administrator is not enough to ensure we can leave opened on background 100% sure some apps... My telegram app from time to time also appears stopped.. Mmmm "strange" but easy to solve for huawei's developers if they were interested in
So strange^2

Actually I have found that it is a feature not a fault. I rang up Huawei to ask for help.
What you need to do is go into Settings (swipe down from top, then cog wheel) > Battery > Close apps after screen lock
Then scroll down to your 'problem' app, and switch to off.
You might be surprised at the apps that have managed to get themselves set to off. I certainly was.

Even having setup properly battery optimisation to be ommited, keep open when close and whitelist on clean up sometimes telegram gets close... We all (or most of us) know.about that options to be setup but Huawei maintains a "hidden" apps whitelist like Google apps that are permitted to be run on background ... We know is not a big and we want to have full control of which apps.to permit 100% of time not decided by Emui. That's the point.

I've tried all the suggestions here and still have trouble. I'd leave my phone for an hour or so, turn the screen on and a whole bunch of notifications come pouring in from WhatsApp, Gmail, Messenger etc.
My settings are:
1. Apps -> Apps -> Special Access -> Battery Optimisation -> Not Optimised (for all my email and messaging apps)
2. Battery -> App Launch -> Manage Manually (for all my email and messaging apps)
3. Wireless & Networks -> Data Usage -> Data Saver -> Off
Is there anything else I need to do? This is a serious problem for me and quite frankly, I need to get a new phone if this keeps happening.

Thanks for your help, I've discovered the issue now. I don't remember if someone mentioned this earlier and I'm not sure how I missed it, but the issue wasn't the apps closing when the phone went to sleep (since I did everything to make sure they didn't close), the problem was that the phone would switch off LTE and/or Wifi when the screen is off. The setting that controls this is in: Settings - Battery - More Battery Settings - Stay connected when device sleeps. Make sure this is turned on (it was turned off for me before).
I feel almost certain this was turned on in the past and feel it was only turned off in one of the firmware updates. I most certainly would never have turned that off. I can't believe they would use that as a default option since I can imagine only the most battery conscious users would want that off. They should at least have an option where the phone would automatically turn data back on periodically to check for notifications. I know there are third-party apps that do this but if they're going to include an option like that built-in, they should do it properly.
Anyway, problem solved, hope this helped someone else out there.
I have the same issue, but Stay Connected is on, and has been for as long as I've had the problem (2-3 days). No new apps, no new updates, affects all my apps. Driving me nuts. Anything else than doing a full wipe left to try?
same here, till yesterday everything was working fine, i didn't install a new app, configuration of battery settings, data background running is the same, also app locked in recent to run backround as before. update i did before 3 weeks. very strange
I'm very sure this problem occur since the newer software update, my device have same issue.
You can check how to remove PowerGenie (the huawei stock battery management), removing PowerGenie 'might' help you fix it.
I called Huawei and asked, and got a fix! It's not a huge lump of fun, but this is it:
Settings - System - Reset - Reset all settings
Note: all your stuff is still there after reset. Only thing that happens is that it forgets your wlans, your fingerprints, face recognition, lock screen pass/pattern, and all kinds of logins and permissions on your apps. And your apps will jump out of folders and make a hell of a mess. But it worked splendidly for me, notifications are popping up as they should, when they should. Gave me a nice chance to re-arrange my apps even.
Happy thoughts to Huawei (Norway) for having customer service available on the phone, on a regular number, and answering within a few seconds.

I just did it today and it was a complete lost of time. In addition of losing all settings (bluetooth, Wifi, applications and folder on launcher,...) it was not helping with notifications: no Outlook, no WhatApps, no banking app... In other word, nothing, it was worse than before.
I will continue to test settings like controlling launching applications and exclude applications from battery optimization.

Have a good day
Is it just push notifications you're not getting or are messages not coming through at all until device unlocked/app opened? I've been trying all sorts, searched "data" in settings and stumbled upon "unrestricted data access" all apps are disabled on this. Hoping next few hours will show that's me sorted finally.
Once my screens been off 15 minutes, friends WhatsApp msgs only show 1 grey tick their end until I open WhatsApp again

GUIDE: How to avoid EMUI system from closing apps running in the background

Hi guys,
I finally found a way to prevent the system form closing applications that I want to keep in background.
First, what most where suggesting is this:
Settings -> Battery -> App Launch -> Turn off "manage automatically" and allow the apps you want to to "auto-launch", "secondary launch" and "run in background"
This is a first step and some users reported it also helped with idle battery drain, however it did not help and system was still closing MX player like crazy if I paused whatever I was playing for a few seconds, so here is the important step for apps you want to keep in background:
Settings -> Apps -> Apps -> three dots on upper right corner -> special access -> battery optimization -> change dropdown menu to "all apps" -> change apps you want to keep in background to "don't allow, may drain battery more quickly"
That's it!

Settings -> Apps -> Apps -> three dots on upper right corner -> special access -> battery optimization -> change dropdown menu to "all apps" -> change apps you want to keep in background to "don't allow, may drain battery more quickly"
That's it!

Restarting the phone fixed the problem
Before restart my device was 48Hrs up
Will wait and see when the system stops multi-tasking
B.t.w. why there is no memory usage visible anymore in settings with EMUI 9?
I noticed it closed some apps, right after using the camera for a bit.
I cant keep youtube running in the background. Wont it still run after doing this? Thank you
already done this but spotify keeps closing.

I restart every morning after a charge because there must be memory leaks. After a day of no restarting it holds at most 2 apps in memory of that.
Also switching to fixed resolution helped a lot for me. There's deffo a bug there.
Is there an way to setup the mail to push instead of 15 min?

Same for me. Seems to do it more when using night mode. Killed Audible multiple times taking night shots yesterday evening. ?
Also there is a memory leak as the time goes on, my device didn't slow down, but i had stutters while playing games.
Phone needs seriously more polish, specifically the camera that closes down a lot of apps, doesn't feel like 6gb.

Hope this is a Typo.
The feature "Ignore Battery Optimisation" is there to allow you to exclude certain apps you want to keep running in the background from being closed by the battery optimisation feature. You do this by adding an app to the "Allow" list, (hence the, "Not recommended, may drain your battery more quickly), and NOT the opposite.
I know you're trying to be helpful but mistakes like this can cause more confusion.

When I had the Mate 20 Pro I had to turn OFF the switch (circle in left side of the pill switch) to "disable battery" optimization in order to allow MX Player to run in background and not being closed every time 5 seconds after I paused something

I think the setting he's referring to is to turn off the notification warning of battery drain which won't help an app stay alive in the background but at least you don't get a notification that you are going to ignore anyway.
Anyone have any ideas as to what I need to stop from being managed automatically in order to keep the clock and battery tiles from being stopped every time the screen is locked?
I've been looking for this for ages! It works! Cheers buddy. You're a legend.

Push Notifications not working is ruining this phone

Hi all,
I have numerous apps I need to provide me with Push Notifications and I'm just not getting them reliably on my totally stock CLT-L09 P20 Pro, and I can't work out how to get them. today I resorted to filling in Huawei's customer contact web form.
I've tried numerous battery/background/data optimisations mentioned in this thread for example
Some apps are fine, others aren't.
OK:
Discord
Whatsapp
Not OK:
Ring
Yi Home
Samsung Smartthings
Any help i'd be grateful for.
Hi! Maybe for above mentioned apps notification is blocked. You try to go Settings>Apps & Notifications>Notifications management>Search that specific app>Enable allow notifications option.

so banal answer
if you don't know, better shut up sometimes
he said he tried many things, how could it be possible that he didn't consider a thing that for default is always active by the way???
made me crazy

Dude, chill.
Do you know why Tech Support always asks you whether you device is connected to a power source? Because sometimes people don't think about the banal things.

Settings -> Battery -> App launch -> Disable "Manage automatically" for your app.
Settings -> Battery -> More battery settings -> Enable "Stay connected when device sleeps".
Settings -> Search for "Battery" -> Battery optimization -> Change to "Don't allow" for your app.
Those 3 work for me, not sure whether you tried them.
Thanks for these suggestions
Doesn't work for me
Hi,
Maybe you tried a lot. I found a solution to my apps.
1.
Open the mentioned apps which are not pushed.
2.
Press the square button to see them in the tasmanager.
3.
Slide all the needed apps downwards - to lock them in the background.
4.
Afterwards you can kill all the tasks - but surprisingly the apps still work in push mode! Of course all mentioned settings in the posts above have to be done to the apps in advance.
This helped me with the push issue. Maybe it is a bug and maybe it is helpfull for you.
Stay healthy! Bye.
tried also this
now way, i'm crying....
even when i re-open the app (was in background), i need to refresh manually to see the Alert in red!
dont know what else to do
These are the reasons why I finally sold my P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro - no reliable notifications and sync, and no solution by Huawei. On Android 10 it's only gets worse.
