Apps freezing when opening. - LG G8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I've had the LG G8 for a few days now. Right out of the box apps (including even the settings menu) seemed to be locking up. I downloaded a small update right after a factory reset. It seemed to have fixed it for a while, but it's happening again. I try and open an app, and am met with a blank screen or the pre-loading icon/screen for the application.
This was happening with the stock launcher and using a custom launcher (lightning launcher). I do not have any cache cleaning applications other than the stock one that is in the settings menu.
Is anyone else having issues with applications freezing when you attempt to open them? Does anyone have a fix? Seems like it's an issue directly with the device, maybe something to do with the dalvik cache?
I should add that sometimes the apps never load fully and just crash.

I've had the G8 for a couple days. I have yet to experience what you're describing. I ported most of my apps using an otg cable and LG Switch. Everything seems to still run like it did on my G5. Hope you get it sorted out.
My G5 wasn't rooted. And I don't think I'll be rooting this phone either.

Yeah. I'm not sure what's going on. I went from the G6 to iPhone and very quickly back to Android. It's really frustrating considering that when apps work... They WORK. This is a great device, but I'd really like to know why it's doing this to me.

For anyone who reads this thread...
I called LG. Apparently I'm the first to report this. I'm a Certified Windows Tech so I'm pretty techy. I've also did some Android development and of course dabbled with rooting. So I'm no dummy.
LG tried to tell me to factory reset. I've done that. So they "submit a ticket" to their engineering department.
This morning I had my wife install Blades and run it. It loads up fine. Runs great. She also hasn't had any problems like I've seen apparently.
So I went to my local Sprint. They had no G8s in stock. There's one left in the whole city. One of their sales guys is driving to go get it now. I'll write here again if I see the same troubles with the next G8S, but I'm betting I won't. It really seems to be something with the dalvik or RAM.

Another hopefully helpful update:
The new device had the same issue! But... I removed my SD card after thinking about how many files were on it. Without the SD card, the G8 works wonderfully!
I'm now formatting the SD card. It's 128 GB and I'm not doing a quick format. Hopefully it's not something to do with the actual size of the card, and was actually the file system having trouble reading when so many large (and small) files were on it.

It was simply a corrupt SD card. The card was locked read only and neither windows or android could format it. Stuck another fresh one in I had on hand in, everything works fine. So lesson learned. A corrupt SD card can cause apps to mess up. Didn't know that. /Shrug

I had the same crashing issue. Mine was also the SD card. Must have happened when moving it from my Samsung to my LG. Everything worked perfectly fine in my old phone, but the card didn't fit quite right into the slot on the LG phone, and seemed I forced it in. Now, I get the crashes. I pulled it out and put it back in my old phone, and I can see everything on the card normally. However, now it is set in Read Only. I will buy a new SD card for my new phone and see if I can do a transfer of the data.

[Q] External SD card not getting registered from time to time?

When I first got my 2x I had no problems with a dismounting SD card. But recently it has started to happen and generally when the phone reboots on its own and such. When it then comes back online it has dumped the External SD card and I am either forced to peel off the cover and then disconnect and reconnect the card.
Or simply reboot manually and go from there. Either of the 2 methods remounts the card, but I am simply at a loss as to what causes the phone to dump it the first time around.
Anyone got any ideas or tips on this?
Tried with different cards?
I have not experienced this whatsoever. I'm using Transcend 8 GB class 6.
I don't really have a huge choice of cards considering the one I am using is a 16 gig one . And it worked juts fine in the HTC Desire I had before the LG.
And it worked fine in the beginning, with the LG. The phone only started being a bit retarded about it a week or 2 ago >_<
I've had the exact same problem. No idea when/why it happens :<
Same here...
And same here, started a couple of days ago.
I would try to format the card with SD Formatter from Panasonic. Do a Google search. I works real good.
I notice this problem only happens to me if I restart the phone using an app (or via clockwork). I have resigned myself to no longer restarting but to instead, shutdown the phone and manually powering it on again..

Please add your support to the thread over at MoDaCo about Paul's reboot app then...
Same happened to me last night. I've had my Optimus 2X for 5 weeks now, never had any spontaneous reboots, it was quite stable actually. Last night I mounted an 8 GB Kensington external SD for the first time on this phone, with some music and videos on it. After booting up, everything worked perfectly. Then, I went listening to songs via YouTube. All of a sudden, nothing but a very loud humming, which continued after I removed and put back the earphone plug. And then, the phone rebooted by itself, for the first time. After it had rebooted, the external SD was still visible using AndroZip, but it was empty! I was pissed off and went to sleep. Just now, I shut off the phone and started it again, and the external SD is back, with all the stuff I put on it last night. So this incident kind of freaked me out. I mean, the 2X isn't what you call a low-end, cheap phone, is it?
same problem here
Did this happen to anyone on stock rom or could the issue be related to a custom rom?
I have been using a class 6 16GB sdcard (unbranded from a reliable seller @ ebay) for about 2 weeks and did not encounter such error, but I am still on stock rom.

Didnt have it on stock, so it could be a custom rom problem, though i had it on fr17 and cm7 and everything based on that. Seeing as fr 17, if im correct, uses stock as a base it should be possible to happen on stock aswell. Someone correct me if im wrong though

sometimes i also have the mount problem, also in recovery ...
a reboot helps in most cases, sometime it needs 2 ...
i also notified that software reboot to recovery (with an app, o2x reboot) causes mounting problems of sd card more often than rebooting with magic keys ...
but it´s not happening regularly, so i can live with that ...
i had it twice on stock, but in a month's time, so it isn't so frequent fortunately
I have the problem on stock rom and if I do a restart... The phone gets hot where the sd card is once loaded back up. Its shows as Unavailable in SD & Phone Storage and have to then just switch the phone off/on and it shows up again. Strange!.
It must be something to do with a soft reset!....
has anyone figured out a solution to this problem yet?
I was about to start a new thread on this prob, luckily i saw this 1st. I also face this prob. My class4 16gb sd card sometimes become unavailable without any notice. Any solutions?

have you guys tried to format the card ? i hear that fixes it for lg optimus one/s/v and so on which also has severe mount unmount issues (also optimus s got an update from sprint which resovled it)

Restarting

i would like to know if Ia m the only one, experiencing constant restarts on the phone, almost every single day and more than once.
hmm sounds like you have some sort of software issue, reflash the software and see if you get this issue again. I've had the phone 2 weeks now and had no weird restarts or anomalies, check my sig it shows what firmware on.

Your sig is what I have really surprised, o well might do a reflash or something, but the phone has also shut off a couple of times, not sure why, but when I unplug the phone from the charger usually.

Yeah I will let you know, besides that, this phone is great, build quality, UI, battery, display, and even the speakers are louder than the G2 and yes I compared them. This is by far the best android experience I had even if it restarted, it is still the best I owned

Well I thought I was the only one, but it seems in android central people are reporting random shutdowns, please let me know if this is a widespread issue, because they also said they dont have an SD card to wipe, so it seems it's not the card causing the problem, but certaintly the same thing is happening to me.
I having these issues also, i have left a message on sony facebook page. This is starting to piss me off for a $1000 phone it is not good enough. It is also corrupting my files on the phone
Wow that is definitely not acceptable, Im leaning to switch back to the HTC One, but still debating, depends to see how many are having this issue.
if anybody knows let me know if this a known issue or if is affecting only a small portion of the phones thanks

HERE YOU GO MY FRND
All users who are facing this problem... i have solved it.. the prob is with android 4.0+ onwards... do not pop in mem cards from other fone directly...
take your memory card out and copy the entire card data on hard drive and then format the card in pc with default settings. then switchoff the fone and put the card in it... it will take smtime to initialize the card at first run. have patience and let it create the suitable folders... the data u looking forward to copy is pics, vids and music files... rest stuff is there on ur fone and it will stop rebooting. DO NOT FORMAT THE CARD FROM WITHIN THE FONE... it has been seen that with android 4.0+ they do not format flawlessly....enjoy and ur rebooting problem will b over...
I have the same problem. My Z1 restarts several times a day. 10 times just today.
I don't have a sd card in the phone, and I never had any sd card. So that can't be my problem.
I don't see any pattern in when it restarts. I can be browsing the web, checking facebook, playing games. Or when the phone just lays on the table. Charging or not charging.
One thing I have seen is that right before it restart the cell signal is gone and there is a sim card icon in the notification bar.
I'm switching cell provider in 2 days, so I will see if it gets any better with a new sim card.

well that doesnt seem a solution for me, I tried what he said and didnt fix my problem the shutdowns happen quite often, I might have to look at a stable device, I may look at the incoming nexus 5, I do like the Timescape UI, but restarting a couple of times a day I cannot agree to that, I had it happen when a call comes in, so it is a problem, because people think I hang up on them.
I got my new sim card and the phone haven't restarted once!
So it looks like my problem is solved.
The difference between my old and new provider is that my old (OneCall in Norway) is renting net from Telenor and the phone is roaming most of the time.
My new provider (Netcom) has its on cell phone net.
If you have the same problem you could try with a new sim card, or use the phone without a sim card for a day.
I've this problem too. I don't have an sd card in my phone and I didn't move any old files from another phone. I've been getting a random reboots per day in the last 3 days. I love this phone but I'm not sure if I need to return it. It is unacceptable.

[Q] Internal Storage - Total Space 0.00B

Holler y'all, I'm hoping you might be able to lend me a hand with these here droid troubles, you see I was fiddling with my Streak and I seem to have broken something kinda important. My droid now tells me my internal storage has a total space of 0.00B on which 2.15GB of applications are installed, contradiction I know. What's kinda weirdypants is that I seem to be able to install new apps fine, but when I try to use the camera I get the "Please insert an SD card before using the camera" nonsense. I should probably note that I also have an external SD plopped into the slot. So there's actually two SD cards, why the camera doesn't see either I ain't got a scoob.
So how did I get here? Well... I had been using that CM10.1 rom, which was quite shexy and all, but the lack of camera and the constant crashing that required a reset made it too unreliable for my use. I decided to downgrade back to Honeycomb and everything seemed to point towards StreakDroid-HD7-R8, but things went a little sideways and I ended up in a boot loop. Perhaps I shouldn't be fiddling with things when I'm so shleepy. Anyways I got my paws on a stock rom and managed to install it with fastboot and recovery. Everything looked fine and I went ahead with setting it up and installing apps, until I got errors about the SD not having enough space to install some apps when it really should've had plenty. I rooted it, tried clearing caches, formatted it, but there was no change except for me having to install all my apps again. Oh yeah, I couldn't backup in Titanium either. So here I am.
Perhaps the SD is dying, perhaps I corrupted it with my fiddling, maybe it's something to do with the partitioning, maybe it's something else? If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please share.
Also, if the SD is to be retired, is there anyway of redirecting apps which would normally use the internal SD use the external instead, for example the camera app?
Thanks in advance.
That is becuase CM10.1 changes the partition tables.
Does not anyone read around here? There is like 10 people who have posted the exact same thing.
You need to restore to Android 2.2 and then upgrade from there.

Offt, that was a tad fiesty. My apologies hombre, I do read and I've ready plenty on this forum, but I guess I haven't read the right threads, perhaps I didn't know the right combination of words to search for. Slap me with a wet fish and shower me in stale coco pops - I am a daftie! You're a mighty fellow, so I shant be cheeky, you've spent a great deal of time making the streak more awesome for all of us, which I do appreciate greatly. Thank you.
Now when you say restore to Android 2.2, are we talking stock ROM here? And do I have to do anything special beforehand or is it just a case of plopping the ROM on my SD and restoring? Thanks kindly for your help captain.
You need to grab the NVFlash pack to restore to Android 2.2, which will also restore the Dell crappy partition tables.
Look at TheManii's DevHost page, he should have it.
Partition tables had to be changed as Dell did not correctly do Android, resulting in the sdcard daemon being broken, so they created something called like "oem_sdcard". If they had just done it right the first time, we would be in this predicament.
Oh and anytime you need to be slapped by fishes, I'm more than glad to. If you had merely scanned the General section, before you posted, you would have seen at least, three threads, where people were having the same problem, and where each time I already stated the exact same thing that you needed to do.
I'll take the slap. I think I spent most of my time in the Dev section, yet I post here in General, you see, that is why I am daftie! My internal compass is corrupted.
Many thanks for the help and info, perhaps someone should slap Dell with a fish? Anyways I best go correct my wrongs now.
I have read many threads and I have the same problem. However, I already used nvflash to repartition my Dell and revert back to 2.2.2. I then updated back to Honeycomb 3.2 and I still have this issue. I ran it a couple times... repartition and restore back to 2.2.2 but still no luck. Any thoughts? Sorry to respond to such an old thread, just fishing for any ideas.

[Q] move to anther d3?

In preparation for upgrading to a Moto X I had them replace my wife's old D3 (with another D3, if you can picture the dusty warehouse that must have THESE spares..) Anyway, what's the more straight-forward way to move from the old one to the new one? The only thing wrong with the old one was a flaky keyboard, so it's accessible for the process.
The old one is rooted and has a 32gb microSD card. Both the old & new are running 5.7.906
The one thing I haven't done yet is activated the new phone (did the four corners green guy skip). The SIM card is not inserted in either phone at the moment. I'm loathe to spend the likely HOUR on the phone it'd take with Verizon and then if the new phone "doesn't work" I'd have to do the dance all over again. Let me get the phone set up first...
I thought I was headed in the right direction by first rooting the new one (via the motofail method) which seemed to work. I then bought and loaded the $3 CWM tool. I used that to create a backup on the old phone to it's SD card. Also, seemed to work. Also downloaded the CWM app onto the new phone, powered off, brought the SD card over, powered up, used the app to reboot into recover and reloaded the backup. Seemed OK. Lots of stuff 'looked like' it was present and usable. I wanted to then go and whack out the bloatware.
But now the new phone reboots. Not right away, it takes a few minutes but then, with no messages on the screen, it just spontaneously reboots. It only seems to do this if the USB cable is connected and USB debugging mode is selected.
It does not reboot unless USB debugging is enabled.
Ok, so perhaps I've missed some critical steps or something. It's been a while since I had to do this sort of thing and this is a pretty old phone. I'm inclined to think there's and ADB driver issue here. But I'd like to be sure to head in the right direction before making a bigger mess.
Suggestions?
Random reboots after moving CWM backup to new D3?
Just when I thought everything was done... bam, it reboots randomly.
I had a D3 with a flaky keyboard. Got a replacement since it's been covered. Going to decommission it next week with a Moto X.
Got the replacement D3 (hoped for a D4 but they STILL have stock of replacement D3's). Old one was rooted and had the D3 Bootstrap app on it. Booted into CWM and made a backup to a blank 4GB microSD card.
Rooted the new D3 using motofail. Loaded the D3 Bootstrap app and restored the backup made from the old Droid3. Seems to 'take'.
But then I started getting random reboots. Thought it might be just related to the USB debugging, so I turned that off. Seemed to stop rebooting.... for a while. STFW said WiFi networks can be problematic, so I deleted all the old networks and turned off WiFi. No love, still reboots.
In fact, while I've been typing this it's rebooted twice.
Ok, so before I subject myself to the utter nonsense that is Verizon support, what steps should I take to narrow down whether it's an issue with the phone or the way I did the restoration to it?
HELP!
I'm thinking I would have taken the old motherboard, and slapped it in the new phone. Just an idea....

Given it was insured there wasn't really any need, other than the possible quicker turn-around. They sent the replacement's replacement in just two days more, so it wasn't a big wait. That one has been fine.
Meanwhile the Moto X was shipped Fedex signature-required, and the driver didn't wait long enough for me to get out of the shower. Nor did they respond to a phone request asking the truck to circle back around later. So presumably it'll be delivered later today.

Tablet crawls to like zero performance. SD card culprit?

This is a strange one. I bought one of these a few weeks back:
http://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
It's been working fine for me. Yesterday, my tablet just hung. Like I could barely click on anything, and then when I could, it only seemed to last for a few seconds, and right back to totally hung. I had to force reboot my tablet, but it was not very long upon reboot that the same thing started.
I turned to google for advice, and one site recommended un-mounting my sd card. Well. yeah, doing that seems to have resolved the problem. It has been running completely fine ever since.
My question: Does this mean I have a bad SDcard, or is the problem with the tablet? Is there a way to know. I don't have the same problem when I plug this sd card into my windows computer.
Sent from my SM-T810 using Tapatalk
Highly likely the sd card.
I bought one of those also and had the same problem. I returned it to Amazon for a refund.
Stick to decent cards like Samsung Evo.
Use cards which are U3 rated for fast writing.
