Moto G5S Plus with "ID: bad key" problem and won't see updates (stuck on 7.1.1) - Moto G5S Plus Questions & Answers

Moto G5S Plus with "ID: bad key" problem and won't see updates (stuck on 7.1.1)
Hello, y'all. I have a Moto G5S Plus (XT1806) with an unlocked bootloader that is showing "ID: bad key" whenever I restart the phone and I have no idea what to even try to do, being that I have not ever even unlocked the bootloader on a phone, as I am having this problem with a phone I bought from eBay that had this issue when I received it.
The full message that displays on my phone is this: "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted. - To learn more, visit: motorola.com/unlockbootloader - ID: bad key - Your device will boot in 5 seconds."
For the record, I'm not really concerned with this message being displayed after I restart the phone, as the message goes away after about 5 seconds and the phone starts up properly and is able to be used (*for the most part, with two issues, which I will describe below this paragraph*), it's that the phone will not see any Android updates and is still stuck on these outdated settings: Android version: 7.1.1 - Current version: NPSS26.116-61-8 - Security patch level: April 1, 2018. And I have tried to search for updates with my T-Mobile SIM card in the phone, and also when connected to my home WiFi, but it will not see a new update available.
* The two issues that I referred to earlier have to do with actually making calls on the phone, with outgoing calls taking like 20-30 seconds to actually start dialing and incoming calls not even ringing through to my phone and sending callers straight to voicemail (the phone shows no notification of someone having tried to call me). Text messaging works properly, and I am able to connect to a strong LTE signal with my T-Mobile SIM card in the phone and I can use apps and websites without any issues. However, outgoing calls take much longer to dial out than they should take, and incoming calls will not work at all.
So, I am hoping that flashing a different ROM on to the phone will fix these calling issues and also allow the phone to update to a more-recent Android version. However, as I mentioned, I have not ever even unlocked a bootloader, much less, actually flashed a ROM on a phone, so I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to things this. Also, for the record, I have tried multiple different APN settings on this phone, I have used my T-Mobile SIM card in another phone without any calling issues, and I have done multiple Factory Resets, but nothing has fixed the calling issues or allowed the phone to see any Android updates.
By the way, if flashing a different ROM might be worth trying on this device, being that I would be a first timer doing something like this, how difficult would this be? And about how long should the process likely take?
If anyone has any helpful advice, information or suggestions that they could offer me that might help to fix this issue with my Moto G5S Plus, I would appreciate any and all help that I could get!

Could anyone at least let me know if flashing a new/different ROM on this phone might help to fix the calling issue and allow it to see new Android updates? And if so, could someone recommend a ROM for me to try to flash?
I would really appreciate a reply.

Lol - you bought a device in which someone already unlocked the bl. Only way to get rid of the message is to lock the bl. But, an unlocked bl isn't causing you to not get updates.

I'm not sure why you find it funny that I bought a phone that already had the bootloader unlocked, but, yes, that's what I did. Also, as I specifically mentioned, I was not really concerned with the message that displays after restarting the phone; I was just hoping to get some information and/or advice about which ROM might be worth trying to flash and some suggestions about a simple way to try to flash a ROM for the first time, as I'm trying to figure out a way to fix the phone call issue and get the phone to see a new Android update.
If anyone sees this thread and is willing to offer a reply that might actually help me try to fix this issue with my Moto G5S Plus, I would really appreciate some help with this!

Bump. I have the same problem on a new phone on which I unlocked the bootloader -- Yes AZAssassin, neither am I sure why anybody would think it's funny to have an unlocked bootloader on a phone that's sold by Moto as easily bootloader-unlockable.
All I've done so far is unlock the bootloader and disable a few useless apps. No TWRP yet, no root, nada. But I keep getting the message that my phone is up to date. Model XT1806, Build number NPS26.116-45. I just want the security updates, not Oreo, but I can't get any updates at all.

huge problem everything works but no signal

i bought a used g1 no physical problems took it into a shop and they couldnt find anything wrong with it internally so im guessing its a software issue....dont know if this guy i bought it from tried to mess with root and messed something up but im thinking its some sort of software stuff....can anyone PLEASE help!?!?!?!?! i either get this phone fixed or keep using my nokia that seems like its from 1998 and its killing me!!!!!!
What are the stats of the phone? You can check the versions in the settings\about phone area. Model #, Firmware version, Baseband version, kernel version and build number information would be helpful.
Is it already rooted? If not, you may want to go ahead and start reading up on the root process. Some of the newer builds may or may not help the issue. But if it isn't rooted and you arent getting a signal, it very well may be a network issue. Also, does your phone service have a data plan? Has the phone gone through and passed all of the sign-in procedure? (being from another country, I am not sure what all you have to do to activate your phone) Sim card good?
thats the problem i did a factory reset to input my gmail info and now i cant get past the damn activation screen! ive been through all the customer support through tmo and cant figure anything out!!! im goin crazy
also ive found this webpage http://developer.htc.com/adp.html that has recovery, system and radio images from htc and every time i try one of them it comes up and says no signature or no verification.......not sure what to do
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316
you cant apply those because your phone is not rooted. learn what your doing without randomly flashing everything that can killed your phone. and yes, you can kill your phone permanently flashing the wrong **** (i.e radio/spl)

[Q] Need step by step HELP to find issue and fix problem

Hello,
I've been come to xda-developes site a number of times over the past couple of years and have always managed to work my way through just about every issue I've encountered...until now
This is my very first time posting, so please bear with me if my terminology is wrong or if I'm not really clear on anything
I got this Unlocked LG Thrill P925 for my husband from someone off of Craigslist. He loved the phone and used it for several months before encountering this issue. When I got the phone it was already unlocked. Although I didn't spend a whole lot of time digging around in his phone, I kind of assumed it was probably factory unlocked because I never saw SuperUser or any other typical app you'd normally see on a rooted/unlocked phone. Considering it is an AT&T phone and we'd been using it on T-Mobile, I definitely know it was unlocked lol.
As stated, everything was fine for several months. One day, my husband was having some issues with the phone not working properly. He finally removed the battery for a while then put the battery back in and turned it on. He said when it came on it had a bunch of computer type code (like letters/numbers/characters) flashing across the screen. One day I decided to mess with it and I finally got it to boot up, however, the phone is NO LONGER UNLOCKED. It seemed like it had basically just factory reset itself or something. I quickly found the battery would drain VERY QUICKLY. Because of this, I was really hoping that maybe the battery crapped out and caused the phone to have some sort of meltdown.
I got a new battery for it, unfortunately the new battery didn't help anything.
I started fiddling around with the phone and realized SEVERAL issues that I haven't been able to figure out how to work around (I've found posts of other people having very similar issues, however, it seems there phones were apparently rooted/modded etc...I have nothing that points me to believe this phone is rooted).
When I go to Settings/About Phone it shows the Model Number as LG-P925
Android Version: 2.3.5
Baseband Version: L6260_MODEM_SIC_01.1042.00
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7+
Build number: GRJ90
Software Version: LGP925-V20p-FEB-22-2012
If I click on Software Update, I get a pop up that says "The application com.lge.omadmclient (process com.lge.omadmclient) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" and I have to Force Close it
If I go to Settings/About Phone/Status it shows
My Phone Number: Unknown <I do not have an active at&t sim only T-Mobile and it won't register>
Network: Unknown
Signal Strength: 0 dBm 0 asu
Mobile Network Type: Unknown
Service State: Out of Service
Roaming: Not Roaming
Mobile Network State: Disconnected
IMEI: Unknown
IMEI SV: Unknown
Usually when I shut the phone off **OR** if I try to do a Hard Reset (Hold Volume & Power Button down etc) the phone WILL NOT boot back up until I connect it to the USB again as if I'm charging it...even then I sometimes have to mess with it by taking the battery out, put it back in, plug the usb in THEN start it. Most of the time it will not start up without the usb being plugged in.
I have LG Mobile Tool...Occasionally it detects the phone and shows there's a software update available. However, when I try to update it, it either just hangs up at apprx 4% OR it will go into Emergency Mode and want me to enter the IMEI. Everytime I try to enter the IMEI # the numbers disappear before I can click next and it prompts me again to enter the IMEI #. ***Also..FYI...if I try to obtain the IMEI # by using *#060# I get a pop up that says Reorganinzing Internal Processes Please Try Again in a Short While***
I apologize in advance if my post seems long winded...I just want to make sure I give all the possible details I can...I'm a techy person, I really like working on phones etc and I've taught myself everything I know so far. Yes, I'd like to get the phone working again, however, I also want to BEAT THIS CHALLENGE....IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY
Thank you for any help you can give me!
Somehow you lost IMEI. If the phone had an invalid or stolen one, I am unsure how to deal with that. Sometimes flashing firmware will also fix IMEI.

Otherwise there are guides for fixing just IMEI. Check Optimus 3D section (same phone, Euro version).

Thank you so much for your response. I looked over the link you gave me, in fact I found that thread before posting myself.
What I'm confused on and not sure how to proceed is that #1 it says must have ics...I only have gingerbread and so far have been unsuccessful in installing any updates/upgrades. I honestly don't even know where to start
I love android phones and am not a big fan of iPhones, however, I can jailbreak/unlock gsm iPhones no problem. I'm a bit more confused with flashing & rooting etc. I keep reading as much as possible, but embarassingly enough...I'm not even sure what process has to come first in this. Flash the from first? Attempt to root first? Or??? I can get wifi on the phone, but have not been able to install updates etc via the PC.
I'm sorry to be a pain...I want to be able t do this! I'm just stuck. I rooted/unlocked my galaxy s2 a coupe of years ago without issue, however, I really don't even remember all the steps I did with that. As much as I don't like iPhones, most of my family prefer iPhones over androids...which is why/how I learned to jailbreak and unlock them pretty easily. I've never ran into a problem like this where I have no imei etc. Therefore I am at a total loss on where to start given the current build and android version etc
Also, I forgot to mention in my initial post, I've read from some people that the apn could be the problem...I've tried going into the apn however, as soon as I click on apn it kicks me right out
It just means you can't install xbsall's custom ROM on top of GB; following the steps puts you to a rooted version of ICS, then the custom ROM, if you choose to install it.
Pretty sure IMEI should still appear even if APN is not set up, so I doubt that is the problem.

Thank you again for your response. I will give it a try later this afternoon and post the results.
It's just crazy...can't figure out how it could be working fine for months, then suddenly have a meltdown along with a case of severe amnesia lol. I've seen there's a lot of other people with pretty much the exact same issue...on the Thrill forum as well as the Optimus 3d.
Yeah, that is odd. We call that a 'glitch.' Who knows, maybe some startup process checked IMEI and didn't like it somehow. No telling... Hopefully it is not some hardware issue.

[Q] Call ended before dailing starts

I bought a second hand GT-I9305. After the first boot I dicided I wanted to flash it with the CM nichtly. I first rooted the stock rom, flashed a recovery and then flashed CM. Now the problem is the I can't make calls. When I dial a number the phone responds with 'call ended' before it even starts.
I don't know if the phone worked to begin with, the first thing I did is flash it.
I've tried different roms now and reverted back to the 4.3 factory image. None of that fixed the problem. I've also tried putting to 2 or 3G only which didn't help either. My phone still shows an imei number.
I'm completely aware of the fact that I might have done something very stupid. I flashed android devices before but I'm the type of person who reads the manual when it's to late.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this problem?
I'm usint T-mobile on the EE network in the UK.
Problem still unsolved, more information
I'm giving some more information as the problem isn't solved yet.
I'm on a Pay as You Go sim that works fine in another phone (HTC Desire S). I've now also try to downgrade to 4.1.1 but still no luck. I've also tried different sims but the problem occurs with those sims as well.
The phone looks to be registered to the network, at least that's what it shows. Also, data works, I get a 3G and H+ connection,
I'm more than happy to provide more information. Any help is greatly appreciated.
SIM unlocked? Google xda sim unlock GT-i9305...
Phone not locked
Thanks for your reply. The phone is already unlocked.
IMEI blocked? If you're in UK try www.checkmend.com/uk/ it'll cost you 1.99 but might save you time & effort...

[Q] Can't network unlock and can't access service menu

Hey all. Very annoying problem (one of many really) here with my xperia sp. I want to change network providers and got my unlock code no problem from my current carrier, no issue there. However when I put in the unlock code I'm told network unlock unsuccessful. I've attempted it twice as I don't want to risk making things worse. I've tried to check the service menu to see if the counter still has attempts but I can't access that either using *#*#7378423#*#*. The code disappears but nothing happens. I'm using paranoid nexus android version 4.4 and I've a locked bootloader if that makes any difference. I did buy the phone second hand so I realise the person before me could've used up all the attempts but it was only about a month old at the time and the person was on the same network as I am (I got the receipt when I bought it off them). Just wondering if anyone has any idea how I could possibly unlock the phone by whatever means or even get a look at my service menu??
My network is Meteor in Ireland if that makes any difference.

I think it's possible that you have to be on stock rom to unlock your device.
And service menu is not accessible in costum roms. Possible that it could be installed, I don't know.
Do the following steps:
1. Make a nandroid backup.
2. Go back to stock rom using the tool "Emma".
3. Do your unlock stuff.
4. Root and install recovery (get the same recovery as you use now!)
5. Go back to your current configuration by restoring your backup.
If you haven't used up all your attempts and your old carrier has given you the correct code, this will surely work!
If you have any further problems with unlocking, reply to this thread by quoting me! That way I'll get a notification. It's better to ask and wait before you've used up all your attempts

Carrier switch help! VZW to ATT

Hey all! Forgive my ignorance, it's been a long time since I've done anything with firmware on Android phones (since I flashed a custom ROM to my Motorola Droid X about 10 years ago, lol). I've been poring over these forums for a few hours now and trying to piece some information together, but I could really use a hand from some more experienced folks.
Here's my situation: I'm in the U.S. I own an AT&T SM-N950U, and a Verizon SM-N950U. The Verizon phone is no longer being used (since April of 2018). I accidentally dropped the AT&T phone and heavily damaged the screen/digitizer and chassis, and would like to go back to using the Verizon phone, but on AT&T's network. I swapped the AT&T SIM to the VZW phone, and I was surprised to see that after a reboot, the AT&T splash screen came up, and after a factory reset, acted just like a new AT&T phone. It will send and receive data, SMS, and phone calls. However, the phone is still running Oreo, and when I tried to update it through OTA or through Samsung Smart Switch, it said that the phone was up to date. A little digging in the settings shows me that the phone is still considered a VZW-branded phone (ATT/ATT/VZW), and I believe this is the reason why I'm not able to receive the OTA updates. I also noticed that I no longer get 5G service, and I'm worried that there may be other functions missing too. I've seen BlueFox721's guide on carrier switching, and decided to do a bit more research before making an attempt, but I figured I would ask some questions.
First off, my main goal is to get this VZW Note 8 to work with all intended functionality of an up-to-date AT&T Note 8, including future OTA updates, bloatware, the whole deal. Is this actually possible?
If it is possible, can it be done without tripping Knox and hindering Samsung functionality?
I've read that root isn't possible with any bootloader past v3... I'm running v4 (N950USQU4CRF3). Is root necessary to switch carriers, or is it as simple as flashing an AT&T firmware with a newer bootloader version than what I currently use?
Again, I know a lot of this information is out there, but there's just so much to comb through I thought it might be better to just ask in regards to my particular situation, in case I'm not understanding something correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
