Icon labels or text under the apps icon at the bottom - Huawei P30 Pro Questions & Answers

Dear XDA users!
I just bought a P30 pro. Everything is amazing with the device itseflt, (but for me at least), there is one very annoying and frustrating thing I cannot accept and live with that.
I had P20 lite before, and on that phone, after I changed the navigation to gestures, the icon texts in the last row of the screen at the bottom automatically were unhided. Like "Dailer", "Messages", "Mail" etc..
It is the same behavior for other devices as well, such as Honor8x, Mate20 lite, etc, so if the navigation bar is hidden (by gestures or 3rd party app), the name of the icons are turned ON, because there is enough space to show them instead of the navigation bar.
It makes me crazy that it does not work the same like in the other phones. Why? Is there any solution to bring back, or show the icon names at the bottom, if the gestures are enabled?
Currently it looks so stupid that an unvisible line is under the icons.
Please help. Any suggestion is very appreciated!

Samy, HTC, Pixel, etc all have no icon names in homescreen

iPhone apps I WISH we had. Irealquicksms and SBsettings

I have both an iphone and a G1. Now people slate the iphone for not being open source, but in terms of productivity it seems the iphone still wins out for me, and it is almost entirely down to two apps which I feel the G1 could REALLY do with: sbsettings and irealquicksms. I am trying to use my g1 everyday as I'm considering selling my iphone and hope someone can point me in the direction of something similar, or the same. Best to look on YouTube for a full understanding of these apps, but in shorts....
Irealsms allows you to send an sms from within ANY application, simply by pressing the volume button followed by a tap on the volume icon that appears, or by doubletapping the homekey. This saves swapping between applications if a text needs to be sent, and also facillitates replying. This is invaluable if you are watching a movie clip and really speeds up the texting process...it is the one application I truly miss from the iphone more than any other.
SBsettings allows you to change almost ANY setting from within ANY application simply by swiping a finger across the status bar on iphone. This means, for example, that if one is watching a film, or browsing the web, one can change the brightness, turn on/off wifi, bluetooth, 3g, gps or any number of other functions by simply swiping the top of the screen, upon which a toggle board slides down the screen. A press of the menu key slides it back up again. I am amazed that this app hasn't been developed for android as it is much more efficient than silly toggle switch widgets which clutter the home screen and are far less practical if one is already inside an application
well Toggle Settings by cooolmagic places the application icon in the status bar for quick access, I find that a good replacement for SBsettings
Toggle Settings is definitely an awesome app and sounds like it would be a good replacement for that Iphone app.
I use ChompSMS and they are constantly improving their app. I'll get onto their website and request they add on a shortcut ability. Say double press on the camera button?
Or, another option is "Bar Control" to add a shortcut for ANYTHING to your notification bar.
Keyboard shortcuts are great, too.
I would suggest looking into sms popup. It makes the text msg pop up and you can just hit the reply button after you respond just hold down the home button and go back to the program you were using last.
Why not use the quick launch keyboard shortcuts for messaging (Search button + S) and Settings (no default)?
You can set shortcuts for up to 36 different apps and the shortcuts will work from any application. Just go to Settings > Application Settings > Quick Launch.
You could also just hold [HOME] and select Messaging/ChompSMS to send texts without having to drop back to the home screen (If it was one of your last 6 apps used anyways...)
Fandango would also be awesome.

Bar control allows you to put any app in the notification bar for easy access within most apps. So you could put your messaging app and a setting app (or any other app you may want) in the bar for easy access. The only exception would be apps that take up the full screen and hide the notification bar. Not many of those though.

How to automatically hide navigation bar for some apps ?

Hello guys,
Here is my problem. I usually let the navigation visible by default on my Note 8. I use them all the time, especially in apps like Whatsapp, where having a swipe up gesture to make them appear is not acceptable for my experience.
But for some apps, this white bar happens to be unsightly, especially for apps like Spotify or 9Gag, which don't require a lot of interaction with the softkeys and have a pretty decent in-app navigation experience without softkeys.
I am trying to find an app to hide my Navigation Bar (the softkeys) for a specific list of app, and make it appear again when I leave these apps.
I am not talking about enabling the "Expanded Desktop mode" for these apps, but only to hide the softkeys.
Thank you, guys !
Hopefully this will help other users to settle with the same issue

Apps not fitting screen + navigation bar driving me nuts

Anyone having issues with apps not "fitting" the screen? Often if I try to take a photo via fb messenger the camera-app will be oversized, I will only see the lower half of the editing menu on top, etc.
As for snapchat - I prefer using the virtual navigation bar, but the bar is positioned right next to/upon the buttons on the snapchat app. I suck at explaining. Basically I keep pushing the backward button when I am trying to save. Same when writing on the keyboard at times. I want the navigation bar to show at all times, but have to use the setting where I can put it away for several apps. Soo backwards. And I hate the other navigation-options even more. I was sooo excited for this phone. Not too much anymore.
Screenshot http s://img ur.com /a/7Y1sPKF (I am not allowed to post links I guess)
Am I doing it all wrong or is there any solution to this? Snapchat and fb messenger has no full screen display on/off option either.
I do have the same problem. Most of the time i open up Instagram, my screen is scaled to my resolution which is bad, cause some things are croped then... have u gotten any help so far?
Have to wait for Android P with notch support basically
Yeah, strange! Yesterday I got OnePlus 6, and when you activate the app to work on the full-screen mode it will fill all the screen even the area around the notch, but on my P20 Pro, it works exactly like the older screens (without the notch). Both phones have the same Android version.

Best solution for me was to turn off the navigation bars in the settings and use the fingerprint scanner to navigate back, go through recent apps and go home.

Persistant Nav Bar

Hi,
I'm currently searching for a way to make my S10's navigation bar persistant in every app. (also in fullscreen apps)
If you watch a youtube video or play a game on a device without hardware keys its not possible anymore to switch instantly.
When i remember how easy and fast it was on my s7 edge, a single click from everywhere got me back on my homescreen and a double tap on the menu button switched to the last app.
In my S10's settings i found something in setting/display/navigationbar but the gestures are not really an replacement. (especially when you use your phone with one hand)
I don't know how bad screen burnin is when i have the bar on the whole time but if the buttons where black it would not be a problem i think?
cheers

Has anybody solved notifications issue on Mate 20 Pro?

Hi everyone. Can anybody post a screenshot of your homescreen with received emails / messages icons showing in the top left corner of the Mate 20 Pro screen (notifications area) please? I'm sick and tired to hear explanations like "hm, weird. might something wrong with your firmware", hm, I've got everything". Something is telling me that this problem is notch related and Huawei simply don't know how to fix it. Thanks in advance.
What problem do you have?

Okay, I want my phone showing notification icons like in your second screenshot with received emails icons. To other screenshots are the result of action like swipe down gesture. How did you get emails icon there?

No notification icons (emails, messages...) in the top left corner. All I have got is operator name and signal strength (GSM + WiFi) signs. That's it. As a result, I'm missing important messages and emails, not reading them in time. Never experienced anything like this on Pixel, Galaxies, LG, HTC and Sony phones. Also my previous phone - Mate 10 - didn't have this problem too. Can't find the way to fix it on Mate 20 Pro.
Maybe you have disabled them by mistake, you can always go to app setting and enable notifications for each app you want.
It's a horrible notch on this phone.
I'd much rather that if the option to turn "off" the notch is selected, that the whole top line would be moved down so that icons show in an entire row the line below, instead of the very top notched line, but such is life!
For you, is this a space issue do you think?
I've changed the option to show a notification number instead of individual icons. At least with this method, you'll know something is there?
.
You have the place for only 4 icons at the right and at the left of the notch. So that depends if you have Bluetooth on, network monitor on etc... Etc.. For each apps you have maybe in notification bar you should disable apps that you don't want to be in notif bar. For exemple I use Tasker but don't need it in notification bar, so I removed is icon in notification menu.
Like you I don't see my email or text msg notification icon but is because I've Bluetooth on, alarm on, vibrate On and data monitoring on so... Alarm icon don't appear coz I've also signal strength.
Signal strength + Bluetooth icon + network monitor + vibrate mode = 4 icons nothing more. If I switch from vibrate mod to ring mod i' ve again one free slot for another icon etc... Etc..

I haven't touched or disabled anything. Everything is on default settings. I've checked all notifications related settings, everything is enabled.

Yes, this is a space issue and a Huawei issues at the same time. I set "show numbers" options but still no luck. Maybe my current operator name is too long to have anything else beside.

Okay, thanks for explanation. Thant's mean it is space + Huawei issue indeed. Useless (no notifications whatsoever) AOD is quite frustrating as well.

Have you tried unticking the display carrier name option in the display settings?
Edit:
Ahh, this only affects the home screen and not the lockscreen. Never mind
There is room for 5 icons and not 4. The last three ones are replaced by new icon.
I think you've changed something in settings that's why you're not getting notifications.
If you look at second screen shot, you can see that sms icon in the first photo is replaced with keyboard icon and on the third it's back again.

Okay, I see. Seriously, I haven't touch any settings, all in defaults state. Just tried to disable providers name and finally notification popped up! Anyway, notch is the culprit of my issue. I takes heaps of space so with provider name displayed by default there is no space for anything else. Can't justify such a huge notch and having below the average sound from the speakers. My old small Pixel 3 sounds a way clearer and louder even not at high volume. Don't really care about secure and fancy 3D face recognition at all.

Then you bought the wrong handset. The notch is there for a reason. I love the 3d face recognition, so I live with the notch. I bought the right phone.
You can also use adb to permanently disable some of the system icons like Bluetooth, alarm clock, nfc, etc.. This really helped clean things up and made more room up top for notification icons.
One option I wish they had was the ability to move signal and WiFi from left to right.

Total is 8 icons....4 at left and 4 at right or 5 at left 3 at right etc... If you choose to put battery % out of his icon you will see... Battery icon take 2 places, % take one, time take one = 4
If you put battery % inside his icon : battery icon take 2 places, time take one = 3, so you have automatically 5 slots available at left... [emoji57]
