[Comment] Edge Display is nothing for a NOTE & much more a pain in the axx - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey there,
this is just a personal opinion, but after working with the note for several months now, I have to say that I definitely miss a straight display without rounded edges - and I have to say that IMAO an edge display (in the current form) provides a bad UX, is impractical and not only it doesn´t provide any extra value, but it much more creates extra work.
My best example: A lot of times where I want to use the smart select feature, the pen just slides to the end of the display´s edge as the rounded glass makes it to do so. this is super annoying.
The edge display is a nice gimmick on the S (e.g. S9 & S10) devices, but when it comes to the NOTE series, I´d very much prefer an even display again. As long as you have a tool with a fine tip, a rounded surface is just a bad interface design decision.
I´m interested in your opinion! What do you guys think about this? Anyone out there sharing my experiences or am I the only one shouting out "GODDAMMIT" several times a week?

It doesn't bother me so much on the note since the curve is much more subtle than on the s series and the area of screen that actually slopes over the curve is a great deal less. It doesn't bother me personally and I really like the look of it so I deal with what very small frustration it causes.

I've always hated this edge crap. It's useless and ugly. And that pen issue is a major one for me. It is so annoying that I've decided not to buy any other note (or any phone for that matter) that has this useless edge.

I completely agree with OP's opinion
Also, it is a pain in the a** for the protection of the screen. The edge gimmick is completely unnecessary in the Note line

I agree too but maybe next version will be concave !:cyclops::cyclops:

Screen protectors are a nightmare on curved screens.

Doesnt bother me to much except for what K-alz stated, trying to get a good screen protector sucks. Then once you find a protector your case pushes it off.
SM-N935F Note FE using Tapatalk

Yup!
The pack of quality screen protectors outweighs the S-Pen slipping off of the side of the screen.
The Note 9 is incredibly awesome, the stupid curved screen aside.

Curved phone screens started as a gimmick/brand recognition thing and stayed for aesthetic purposes. They also make the phones look a bit less candy bar-ish (due to tall aspect ratios these days).
Other than that, there are no pros at all. It just ruins user experience in general.

Guess they heard everyone's complaints - b/c the Note 10 lite is basically a Note 9 with a flat screen :good:

help me decide between note 5 vs edge plus

Hello everyone,
I'm looking to upgrade my note 4 (H version) to either a note 5 or edge plus, I aware that both phones are 95% identical yet there are few things that are still not clear to me which would help me decide. I know that each phone is targeted toward different audience however, the main decisive factor in purchasing the note series in the 1st place was the display size & the hardware, the stylus functionality was always an added value.
If some of you might be wondering why I'm upgrading from N 910H its because of the 4g support, 64 bit chip, premium build quality and I'm guessing it will enjoy better vendor & community support than the H version that I have.
As such, I would appreciate your help if you could provide me with your experiences/ knowledge:
1- Which one has less bloat ware that might sluggish the performance of the device? for e.g. the note 5 comes with a lot of Samsung software/optimization for its stylus functionality which might impact the smoothness of the device not to mentioned TW
2- Which one has more usable storage (less system memory) considering the limited storage options we have?
3- Which device scored better in benchmarks testing such as Antutu ?
4- Which one has longer battery life?
Thanks everyone
after my experience with my 32GB S6 edge, i realised just how small of a storage it is and went with a 64GB for my Note 5 Duos. the OS takes up just over 1.5GB and System Memory takes up under 10GB. if you need the S-Pen, your number 1 becomes a moot point.
if you need the absolute peak performance in processing speed and battery life, then i would think it becomes a very negligible difference between the two. i haven't seen actual comparison specs, but i would imagine they're both similar.
personally, i really wanted the curved front screen, but the stylus will always win me over. i need it for cropping screenshots, diagramming and taking notes, quickly. and like i tell everyone else, in case you ever need it, at least the stylus will always be there.
The curved screen is a gimmick. The novelty will wear off very quickly. I honestly don't see the point. It looks cool, granted, but it makes content look distorted. Why would you want that?!
Anyway, it wasn't even a choice for me. Note 5 all the way.
If I chose the edge+ over the note 5 I would only do so if it has "proven" better battery life, more available storage and smoother experience (less bloat ware) not because of the curved display.
I have the edge, I really like it a lot, but I don't use the edge what so ever. Basically bought the phone due to the color, and looks. Extremely visually appealing.
Sent from my SM-G928T using Tapatalk
That's a tough decision. .. but then you have to pick a color! !!!
I would ideally own all of them!
I had the S6E before buying the Note 5 and while I loved the look and feel of the Edge screen, there were 2 major reasons I didn't buy the plus. The first is simply I didn't even use the few edge features there were, as previously said it's gimmicky. Second, and this is the big one, terrible options for glass screen protectors. It may seem odd to make a buying decision based on the screen protector support but I cannot and will not go back to anything but tempered glass and I am not willing to forgo any sort of protection at all.

That's exactly my issue with the s6. I couldn't buy the proper protection for it and it got broken on me. The note 5 is much better with protection and cases.

What I Love and Hate about my new OnePlus 5!

My OP5 has replaced my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which unfortunately was dropped and shattered the front glass. It's expensive/difficult to replace the glass on these so I treated myself to a new phone. So this is what I Love and Hate about my new OnePlus 5!
Love
The Snapdraggon 835 -The phone is Fast and bang up to date in connectivity support.
Fast storage and lots of memory- More Speed
No bloatware and streamlined Android -Contributes to the speed and simplicity.
The silent/DnD slider button -No more taking my phone out and turning the display on to switch it to silent! Fantastic.
Fast responsive finger print unlocking.
Solid Home button -Sooner or later the push down home buttons on galaxies start to wear causing rocking, noises/rattles, missed clicks etc because of their frequent use. Hopefully nothing to wear out here.
The deep blacks and saturation from the AMOLED panel
3.5mm jack -Can still use my headphones without an adapter.
Battery -Amazing battery life and the DASH charge is great too.
USB C -So easy to plug in the charger in the dark now.
Gorilla Glass 5 -better drop resistance, the gorilla glass 4 on my Galaxy S7 drop failed
Glass on one side. Feels less premium in a way, but reduces the weight of the phone. This means less force when it falls and less chance of shattering the screen. However metal dents and scratches easily.
Hate
The Camera. So much hype and so much disappointment. Good on paper and for taking 'benchmark' photos. But very poor in real world phone usage. The S7 camera is WAY better. I'm so disappointed I gave it it's own thread.
Only 1080P screen. Also if the brightness is turned up I can see 'noise' on the display. Also get some weird distortions when scrolling. Viewing angle is good, but not excellent. Automatic brightness control is also hit and miss. The S7 was much better. A big downgrade on the S7 display in all areas.
Design is good. But it doesn't look as nice as say a galaxy S8
Having DRM issues, such as reduced quality Netlix streaming. I hope this gets sorted soon.
Sound is loud, but quality is average.
Not waterproof
No SD Card support. Who really wants two sim card holders? Make the other slot for an sdcard like Samsung.
Price. £450 is not a value bargain like the old versions. You can buy a Samsung S8 on Amazon for £550 now.
In a nutshell. It's a mid range phone in regards to features and design, but with high end performance. I don't think it's a bargain. I think the price is about right for what you get.
Sometimes I ask myself why do people actually upgrade from S7 or equal??
The S7/S7 edge is only one year old. I think it's also nonsense to upgrade from S7 to S8 for example.
What do people expect to get? A whole new smartphone experience? Ppl knew the specs right from the start, before they bought it. Of course a 1080p screen will be worse than a QHD.
It's not waterproof, you knew that. It has no SD-Slot, you knew that as well.
For the smoothness and the speed to exist, as well as the great batterylife, there need to be some things that can't be amazing as well for this price. And it's not even bad on this phone.
I understand disappointment, but it's mostly because people expect too much from a phone that is only 1 year younger than the one they own.
I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and I'm totally happy with the OP5. My gf has a S7 edge. They are both good phones. The Samsung might have a better camera, but the Android experience and smoothness is GALAXIES better with the OP5.
Sometimes ist also about people's priotities.
Just my 2 cents. Hope you'll enjoy your new device

I don't think you can add lack of water proofing and no SD card slot and only 1080p to the list of hate since you should have known this already but continued to purchase the phone.

Because I said . honesty though, I just hate complaints on lack of features when it was a known fact prior to purchase. So I'm going to stick to my opinion on the subject.

It is possible that he thought he could look past it, but ended up failing at it. idk. All I can say is that it has happened to me. Mostly with iPhone, but that is a whole other beast.

Considering trading my note 8 for an S8 plus

I loved my note 7 (nice rounded edges samsung oem screen protector etc) This phone just feels ...well HUGE... in pocket as well as in hand... I am realizing im not using the spen at all really (other than to send sparkly messages to my wife) since i got my ipad pro and pencil for sketching. For some reason this thing feels immense in my front pocket and heavy.I read at night and holding this phone can be cumbersome at best.. I love the screen and playing games on it but for pretty much everything else its not what i expected. I went to best buy and held both phones at the same time and the s8+ feels so much better in hand with only a .1 in screen difference (i cannot even notice) Am i crazy for exchanging it for a S8+?
ps i like the dual camera live focus thing but for me personally its not that important. 99% of my phone pics are point and shoot and share to a friend or social media..
Really, this is a decision up to you. No one here can tell you what phone you want. But in my opinion, if you don't care for the S-Pen, the better screen, and the dual cameras, then you would be both happier and better off financially if you get the S8+ instead. The S8+ is practically the same phone if you remove those features from the Note 8. The processor is the same and Samsung will support both phones with updates for the same length of time.
Yes, we all have a different preference Good luck finding what you want!

There's not much difference besides the ergonomics. The s8 plus feels good in the hand and less blocky. I wouldn't do it.

Nothing worse than buyers remorse. So sorry to learn you are not enjoying your Note 8. Odd having enjoyed the Note 7? The Note 8 improves on all the Note 7 had, then some.
I do hope you enjoy the S8+ it's a superb phone, I moved sideways from it to buy the Note 8 as I want and use the S-pen. Had I not wanted the S-pen I would have still sold the S8+ and bought the LG V30 as next on my list of prioritise is music and the LG excels in that arena.
Let us know how you get on. :good:

I got a Note8 to replace a S8+. The Note8's for want of a better word beefier. I like the corners of the display squared; there's more usable space. And it has S Pen which I've missed since the Note7 debacle. My S8+ was a UK Exynos and my Note8 is a S-835 unlocked U.S. phone because of the $425 Note7 discount. They perform the same and even battery life is the same even though the Note8's battery is smaller. Side by side I like the colors and brightness of the Note8's display better. And my S8+ was one of the few without display issues.
To each their own.

If this is what you want, don't let anybody persuade you otherwise, just don't let the door hit you on the way out. I couldn't wait to give my S8 to my wife and get N8, but I use s-pen all the time and I'm surprised you going for S8+, instead of S8, since as you said the difference is small, but whatever makes you happy, it makes you happy.

i actually considered the s8 over the s8 plus but it seems much more narrow or improperly proportioned compared to the s8 plus if that makes sense.. my main grip is the in hand and in pocket feeling the squared off note 8 feels compared to the much more rounded s8 plus it feels much more ergonomic in my hands.. i barely used the spen in my note 4 and simply got it because at the time it was the largest screen offered in a sammy device.. i guess at some point bigger isnt always better..

Not looking like I will bother with it but I did play around with a note 8 and had my s8+ with me and like the way the note felt in hand better.

As long as you are happy.
Yep, aside from the Note being a bit (approx 0.7cm) longer than the note, it is just as wide. The note 8 has more square corners too but overall the width is identical...
I also have both.

Well done. Ryland.
I would of stayed with note 8 more ram and way better standby time than s8+
I came from my s8+ which I absolutely loved but I switched carriers and figured I'd try a different phone, first week I wanted to March back to store room exchange for s8+ as the note 8 is heavier and tad thicker and screen is more blocky, and now a week later I have to admit I do love the note, the spen is really useful for me at work as I need clients to sign my phone when making transactions, battery life isn't as beast as the s8+ as expected, but isn't much behind either, both phones are all day battery, so no complaints there but I feel note 8 has more screen real estate simply from the corners being less rounded, I'm a happy camper
I ended up going back to the note 8 !! Even with a case on the s8 plus i was getting false registers on the sides and corners with my big meaty hands... Is will be here Monday. Also in gaming grip or watching movies there note is far superior.. i feel dumb returning it but hey, it was a learning experience and at least i ended up with the better phone in the end
Yeah, for sure if you're not regularly using your S-Pen and you're not gonna miss the dual cameras or the extra bit of RAM the S8 Plus is a reasonably solid alternative. Like others have said here, the Note series is no longer the only device with a large OLED screen. Hell, now you'll have the LG V30 to choose from if you're switching away from the Note 8 as that's also OLED (and flat).
The feel between these two phones, aesthetically with the body's frame, for sure, feel different. I still have my S8 Plus to kick around and I can feel how well it rest much easier in the hand than my Note 8. I'm just partial to the more squared off corners of the Note 8's screen. Something about that more sharper edge in the corners also makes it feel like a thinner phone than the S8 Plus. I know, that sounds weird but that's what I feel when I'm holding both of them. The screen, IMO, needs to be as sharp in the corners as possible because I find that to be more sleek and mature in design.
At least we have some brilliant choices to pick from today. We're pretty spoiled in the modern phone market.

Samsung galaxy note 8

Is there anyway what so ever ( with/without root) to disable the edges of the display to give it or more symmetrical squarish shaped look ? Similar to the galaxy s8 active.
I don't think that is possible.
Well, I dont think so, those rounded corners in fact are a distinctive look in the note series since the curved display were implemented, this is the first time I hear someone not liking it

At first I was like ok slightly rounders corners note big deal but after some time I grew to absolutely hate them and I just wish that device was more sumymmeterical.

Question Worst galaxy ever. Here's why to avoid

Coming from S9, Note 10+ and many other older galaxy phones have to say this is absolutely the worst Samsung device I have ever owned.
For those considering, here are reasons why you should strongly think about whether you want to spend the money on this particular model
- Extremely large and heavy device. Doesn't fit in pockets, pulls down pants / shirts it is so heavy
- Extremely unbalanced. Hurts your hand / wrist trying to balance it unless you get a popsocket because it is so top heavy
- Super fragile screen. Low cost panel is super easy to break. Mine broke after 4 weeks of light use in a weird way (half on / half off, intermittant dimming of each display half)
- Loaded with malware. Tons of Samsung malware / adware / spyware to debloat, assuming you get the Exynos
- Back coating for anything but Silver is super easily chipped. Phantom Black chips daily unless you get a case (and increase the size)
- Runs hot. Nice in winter to keep you hands warm but otherwise annoying - any videos or games and expect to feel the heat
- Slow to charge. Super Fast charger takes an hour and a half
- Camera is misleading. Only certain zoom increments work correctly - all others are blurry / basically no improvement relative to s20
While the 10x zoom is sort of cool the reality is that this phone is a lemon compared to other Samsungs or current Apple competition.
Very unrefined effort relative to iphone or better Sammy devices (ex. Note 10+ or Galaxy Alpha) in terms of weight / materials / balance / display.
Likely last Samsung I buy - seriously considering Pixel 5 on GrapheneOS given the litany of hardware and software issues from a super expensive phone you don't really even own.
Interesting perspective. This is my first return to Samsung after writing them off years ago. Outside of the bloat (which can be removed via ADB) and the lack luster camera performance (in comparison to the Pixel line) the phone is solid! It's not any heavier than other similar size devices. It's very fluid and smooth. It's got great hardware and build quality.
If it hurts your wrist... I really can't help you there. Never had such an issue. The balance point in the device is at about the power button so pretty mid phone really.
Most of the weight related comments are subjective. I actually prefer the weight and feel of this device compared to the Note 20 ultra.
You forgot... no SD card slot. No native spen.
And those wretched rounded display corners.
I would at least expect it to be more durable with dog ugly rounded corners. It's a step backward in design and features. I wouldn't buy it for $400.
It wouldn't be the first time I rejected/bypassed a Samsung release.
Samsung has always run hot and cold.
Feel the wuv... just my opinion

I was like you once in regards to the near right angled corners of the Note series. It was my favorite aesthetic part of this phone. But maybe boredom got the better of the me. As I'm digging the smooth rounded corners now. It's so nice to hold in the hand nekid. Ooh errr....
The curved edges are less aggressive as well. The s21U with a 6.9" display would have been nice. Roll on the s22U lol. Truth be told, I would have probably been a Huawei guy by now. Now they make some good hardware. But ant competitive practices put an end to their rise to dominance.
PS I'm in the process of removing bloat. Doesn't seem to be as effective on this device. Perhaps disabling isn't as good as uninstalling like what I used to do ?
This is an entirely subjective assessment of the phone. I never had any of these issues and I thoroughly enjoy the experience of the phone. I made sure to do my research before getting this phone and weigh what the important aspects of it vs the not so important aspects. I'm sorry you've had this experience and I hope you get the right device for you next time.

Mine are quite strong surprisingly
Perhaps consider using a belt or jackets with bigger pockets... This phone weighs as much as the iPhone 12 Pro Max and less than the Mi 11 Ultra. If you want the best, you have to accept the weight.
There's no more or less "malware" than any other Samsung device.
What's misleading about the camera? It's got 4 rear cameras each with a specific zoom level.
This sounds like one of those situations where you should've tried out the phone in a store before buying it. Online reviews isn't the same as holding it in your hands.

Indeed. The issue with the size and weight would've been avoided if he/she had done a physical trial of the phone before buying.
Also, the experience of one doesn't mean the experience of many.
