[SM-T510/T515] 2019 Galaxy Tab A 10.1 Hard Resets - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Guides, News, & Discus

Here's a quick reference for how to reboot and reset your 2019 Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (SM-T510/T515) using the hardware buttons:
Force restart:
- If your device is frozen and unresponsive, press and hold the Volume Down + Power keys simultaneously for more than 7 seconds to restart it.
Boot to Recovery Mode:
- Power off the device
- Press and hold the Volume Up + Power keys at the same time.
- Release both keys when you see Recovery Mode.
Boot to Download Mode:
- Disconnect the USB cable
- Power off the device
- Press and hold the Volume Down + Volume Up keys
- Insert the USB cable
Boot to Safe Mode:
- Power off the device
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When the boot logo appears, release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume Down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe Mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Since there is no Bixby button, these combinations are different than the Galaxy S10. If you know of additional combinations, please contribute to the discussion below and I'll consolidate here.

If there’s no response on your device or you're stuck in a boot loop, then you might need to wait for the battery to drain. The 2019 Galaxy Tab A 10.1 has a non-removable battery pack, so disconnecting that isn't an option. Hopefully, the system reverts to its normal function with a cold boot. This can take time if the battery has high charge left at time of failure. Depending on how fast your battery drains, this can mean waiting for a few hours to several days.
UPDATE: With the right timing, you can break out of a boot loop into Download Mode...but it's tricky:
Insert USB Type C cable connected to your PC
Press and hold the Power and Volume Down keys for exactly 7 seconds (hard reset)
Release the Power key and press and hold both Volume Up & Down keys (enter Download Mode)
If you don't see the blue bootloader unlock warning screen, keep repeating the above two steps
The trick here is that you're trying to time your switch to the Download Mode keys for the exact moment the hard reset takes effect. If you see the boot logo while still holding the first key combination, it's too late. If you switch too early, you won't trigger the hard reset.

I've had to hold down both volume up and volume down while plugging in usb to get the unlock screen to populate. Canadian Wifi variant.

Thanks, that was an error in my initial post. I was figuring these out by trial and error, but it turns out that our hard resets are basically the same as for the Galaxy M30, which also uses the Exynos 7904 SoC and has no Bixby key.
https://www.hardreset.info/devices/samsung/samsung-galaxy-m30/download-mode/
UPDATE: Also the same as for the Galaxy A30 and some others.

Yes, I did the same way
US version
1. Enable OEM Unlock
2. Turn the tablet off and unplug the cable
3. Press and hold both volume up and volume down buttons and plug USB cable to host computer
4. You will get wipe screen. Long press volume up to unlock the bootloader.
Now I have to find matching ROM and patch the boot.img and flash.
I believe you have to disable Vault Keeper to keep root intact.

Brand new out the box 11am this morning.
Opened the parcel cool no damage. Powered up fine, had a mess with it, no problems check the speakers were fine and no issues plugged it on charge to 100% took it off and left it for an hour or so, went back to it and physically used it to use Facebook and play candy crush cool no problems. Took a few photos and no problems again. Put it on the side still on near 90% and went back to it 30 minutes later completely off and won’t turn back on, tried charging it nothing no sign of life, tried rebooting it and still nothing. Please tell me that this is not the end and I need to get a replacement... ?*

I’ve not even been able to get it back on, I’ve attemp a reboot countless of times and still nothing rectifys it. I spoke with Samsung they feel it’s a major fault with the tablet and have told me to request a replacement from my provider or even a refund.

Forgot pattern password, unable to power 510 Tab A off since pattern password is required. How to wipe tab or reset to factory without powering off?

[GUIDE] / [ FIX ] - Accessing downloader & recovery w/ locked hardware access

LET ME MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR - MOST OF YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO ACCESS DOWNLOAD MODE OR RECOVERY VIA HARDWARE BUTTONS....
BUT NEWER PHONES SEEM TO HAVE HARDWARE ACCESS DISABLED.. THIS IS A WORKAROUND FOR THESE LOCKED OUT PHONES...
THERE IS NOW A ODIN FLASHABLE FIX FOR H/W LOCKED PHONES
SEE THIS THREAD - THANK YOU untermensch
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804305
METHOD 1: ACCESSING DOWNLOADER/RECOVERY:
(if the following directions do not work... then your phone may be locked out from using hardware buttons to access downloader/recovery)
Download Mode:
With the phone powered off
Plug in the USB cable.
Turn the phone on it's side and use both thumbs to hold (left thumb) Vol Up and (right thumb) Vol Down
Press and hold the power button with your right index finger til you see "Virbant" release the power button and it should say Downloading.
Recovery Mode:
With the phone powered off
UnPlug the USB cable.
Turn the phone on it's side and use both thumbs to hold (left thumb) Vol Up and (right thumb) Vol Down
Press and hold the power button with your right index finger til you see "Virbant" release the power button and it should be on the recovery screen.
METHOD 2: STUCK AT VIBRANT SCREEN:
(and are not able to use vol+ vol- methods to access downloader/recovery)
You will need the samsung ADB drivers installed for your phone as well as ADB...
ACCESS DOWNLOAD MODE
1) remove back cover and take our sim card and sd-card.
2) take out the battery
3) hold ALL 3 buttons down at the same time. (Vol +, Vol -, Power)
4) while holding down those 3 buttons put the battery back in
5) continue holding all 3 buttons until the vibrant disappears and reappears... once it reappears, release all 3 buttons
6) Setup ODIN and get it all setup and ready... (if you are flashing your phone via odin)
6) now connect your phone to your pc via USB cable
7) open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder with ADB and type ADB REBOOT DOWNLOAD
8) Your phone will reboot into the download screen... go back to ODIN - A com port should now appear for your phone...
9) Click start and wait for your phone to do its thing
ACCESS STOCK RECOVERY
1) remove back cover and take our sim card and sd-card.
2) take out the battery
3) hold ALL 3 buttons down at the same time. (Vol +, Vol -, Power)
4) while holding down those 3 buttons put the battery back in
5) continue holding all 3 buttons until the vibrant disappears and reappears... once it reappears, release all 3 buttons
6) now connect your phone to your pc via USB cable
7) open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder with ADB and type ADB REBOOT RECOVERY
8) Your phone will reboot into the stock recovery and flash whatever update.zip you need
METHOD 3: STUCK AT PHONE ! COMPUTER:
Plug in the USB cable.
Turn the phone on it's side and use both thumbs to hold Vol Up and Vol Down
Press and hold the power button with your right index finger.
The screen will go black, continue holding.
The screen will come back on, you'll see the same Phone to Computer icon
Continue holding, the screen will go black
The screen will come back on, you should see "Vibrant" release the power button and you it should go into Downloading
METHOD 4: STUCK AT PHONE ! COMPUTER:
(and are not able to use vol+ vol- methods to access downloader/recovery)
CALL TMOBILE AND BEG FOR THEM TO REPLACE UR PHONE..
METHOD 5: ODIN ERROR - ODIN HANGTHANKS EUGENE363)
When you can't get into Download MOde....
assuming you just got a Hang in ODIN Flasher...
1. Un-plug usb from Phone ( But still plugged into the Computer )
2. Pull Battery
3. Let the Phone sit for 15 to 30 seconds
4. Plug in USB to Both Phone & PC if not already
5. Hold Both Volume Buttons
6. Put Battery in while still holding Volume Buttons.
My Phone is HW Locked as well, with a v1 board.
every-time I get odin hang, doing the above always results in letting me re-flash.
Interesting! I'll give it a try.
UPDATE: I have successfully reflashed my vibrant... now I will reinsert the SD card and SIM card... and back in business!!!
I am 100% positive my phone was a newer "locked" model... I was unable to access the downloader OR the stock recovery and out of frustration.. I figured out how to access ADB and reboot my phone into downloader or stock recovery!
Hope this works for everyone!
For those of you that just want to test this method out... it does not seem to work for me now that my phone boots past the vibrant screen.... this method only seems to work if you are STUCK at the vibrant screen...

I wonder if this will work for people that are stuck at the computer ! screen... I am unable to get to download mode or recovery with the vol. buttons. tried all the methods that i can find in the forum.
That sucks... give my method a try play around with it... follow the guide.... see if the computer ! screen flashes... if it flashes.. release all three buttons when the computer ! screen reappears and see if it shows up when you connect the USB cable and type adb devices

Oh, I don't have the problem. I'm just thinking if this will work for it. This is the main reason why i'm not messing with different roms/firmware until i can figure out a sure way to get into download if anything would to go wrong. As of right now, i'm just rooted and running Vibrant6. Will not go any further until i figure out the download mode on these newer batch.

This actually does not work for me. I have to 1) Pull the battery to make sure the phone is off, 2) Put it back in, 3) plug into USB, and immediately press and hold vol up/down.
Or ADB Reboot Download, but only sometimes.

If you are about to immediately press and hold up/down you are clearly not using a locked phone... and believe me.. this method works.... i tested it out about 10 different times trying to make the how to as easy as possible... if you are STUCK at the vibrant screen... how were you accessing ADB?
LIKE I SAID... This seems to only work for phones that wont boot past the VIBRANT screen.. My phone is locked out of hardware access to downloading mode and recovery... If you arent locked out of hardware access... then this would be a pretty irrelevant GUIDE..
Here is what makes me believe I am locked out of hardware access... when I follow any of the tutorials on how to access download mode... my phone just flashes and goes back to the vibrant screen... or back to the battery.... it NEVER does anything else...
can anyone confirm that that is what happens with "locked" phones?
I have seen a few posts... in this thread as well as the general Q & A thread .. regarding people having this exact same problem... and having to take their phone back to t-mo to swap it out..
Heh seems like a lot of work. Here's what I normally do and always get into the desired mode.
Download Mode:

Yes... my method seems difficult... BUT IT IS ALSO FOR NEWER VIBRANT PHONES THAT CANNOT ACCESS DOWNLOAD OR RECOVERY VIA YOUR METHOD OR ANYONE ELSES METHOD... because t-moble disabled hardware access...
That is exactly what happens with my phone. Either reboots or goes to the battery screen.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well hopefully between your method and mine.... nobody should have a problem accessing the downloader.... I have tried your method about 15 times with zero success accessing downloader or recovery... and I am pretty savvy... not sure what the differences are between our phones...

I just got new Vibrant and everything works fine. No need for any of that.....just have to hold volume buttons and release power button at the exact specific time with usb pluged in, phone goes straght to download mode.
RIP vibrant
just tried this method, and it didn't work for me. My Vibrant has the phone-!-computer error and it's the newer phone that doesn't load to recovery/dl mode via hard keys. I so happened to be loading a rom using odin and unplugged it because the process didn't show a status bar, it basically sat there doing nothing. Once i unplugged the phone it showed nothing but that error message on power up, hardreboot, charging ect. Thanks, tmo for locking hardkey recovery mode =(

had this happen twice and those steps worked for me both times:
"have your usb in, press down both the volume up/down toggle and the power button.... hold them until the screen goes black and as soon as it does, let go only the power button and it should appear there again
however, i found out that you need to take out the battery and get into download mode freshly again...."

This is exactly what I do on my phone. Actually had to do all three of this last weekend when I made a bonehead move and damn near bricked my phone. ODIN and Titanium backup saved my bacon.
I still do not fully understand this whole disabled recovery access thing. Has Samsung acknowledged it as a bug or a new permanent change? I heard they were going to fix it in the Froyo release?
I am unsure of what phones are locked and which ones arent... its kind of weird that some phones are locked out... my question for Eugene or JAC...
Is it possible to take an unlocked phone... and flash everything over to a locked phone... "unlocking it" so that the hardware buttons work?
and by unlocked I mean... able to access downloader/recovery via hardware buttons...
Those of you that ended up on the Phone ! Computer screen... if your phone is hardware locked... you are screwed... the method I originally posted only works if your phone will at least boot to the Vibrant screen (and have a hardware locked phone)
If your phone is not hardware locked... you can follow the millions of posts telling you how they access download mode... no need to follow my guide
Recently, I bricked my phone due to the hardware recovery/download feature being disabled.
Sitting here waiting (for 3 days) for the prepaid UPS return sticker from TMo I had a thought...
What if TMo/Samsung did not actually lock some of these phones down.
Follow along...
In the past, every single phone that I have ever owned would power up via USB connection (from the wall) even if the battery was not installed.
Tonight I noticed that my Vibrant will not power up unless the battery is installed.
USB (from PC) - Battery = No Power
USB (from wall) - Battery = No Power
Battery +/- USB (any) = Phone--!--PC icon
If someone who has a fully functional Vibrant (hardware recovery/download feature works) could try this out?
I'm curious to see if this is a possible pattern...
People keep saying to hold power in some way or another to get to download mode... You dont need to ever touch the power button!
Turn phone off, plug usb into computer, hold both volume buttons in and plug usb into phone. It will instantly go into download mode.

Ativ S Blue Screen After Boot

I have bought a Second hand Ativ S and it turned out to be dev unit, it worked for the most part(occasional crashes), but recently it broke.
After it boots it gets me to a blue screen and then powers off. I can still access the download mode and the system files via USB. But I want to do a factory reset of some sort or at least be able to use it.
Can someone help me out with this? Is there a possibility to re flash it? or is there a combination of buttons i don't know about?

have tried to hard reset the phone by this steps?
If you can't access your phone's Settings page:
1.Turn off your phone.
2.Turn on your phone again by pressing the volume down button until you see the exclamation mark
3.Then, reset the phone by pressing the following four buttons in this order: Volume up, Volume down, Power, Volume down.
4.Your phone should now reset and restart itself. (It might take a while for the process to complete.)
And it didn't work for you? If not you have go to a Samsung store, probably they will flash you a normal OS to your phone...

I've tried that...it didn't work. I've also went to Samsung and apparently it made it worse. Initially my problem had a blue screen after booting but after I took it back from service the blue screen has disappeared and now the phone just powers down after the boot. THe guys at Samsung told me that the don't have the device number in their database and that the cannot do anything to it....so i'm hopping that some tool will pop-up and I'll be able to flash the device from home.
Also being an Engineering unit when I power the device based on your description it doesn't show me an exclamation mark it just goes dark and if i hook it up to the pc it shows as mass USB storage, and I can access the files on it. So there is something i'm missing for this device in particular.
Thanks anyway for your support.
Thank you again Jackson5...Really...Thank you, i've almost lost hope...after seeing your post and replying to it I said ....what the heck...lets try that again, and it worked...not with your steps exactly...I put the phone into a charger and it started to power up...Windows logo power down..and again power up and shutting down....Meanwhile I pressed Up on the volume and the exclamation mark appeared. and from there, suffice to say that I have a phone, again. So Thanks again

Same problem, help...
It seems Ive got the same problem with my Ativ S, I've tried everything and nothing is working...
Sorry, but can you tell me what buttons exactly and in what order did you press to get to the exclamation mark screen, please? I am sorry but I really cannot understand your explanation (your post) very well, you said:
"Windows logo power down..and again power up and shutting down....Meanwhile I pressed Up on the volume..."
Do you mean logo + power or logo + power + volume down or something else? I cannot understand the part "again power up and shutting down" either...
Thanks

If the phone powers down due to blue screen or any other problem you might encounter, connecting it to a power source will make your phone restart...so basically what happens is the Phone powers up reaches the error and shuts down, but because is plugged to a power source it will power back up. So while you are plugged with the device keep pressing those buttons... Having a Dev unit apparently it worked with the Vloume Up ...
-Press the Volume Down Key + Power Key to turn on the unit
- Still hold the volume down key, the release Power Key.
- Wait for the startup screen booting with an exclamation mark " ! " then release the volume down key.
- Press the following buttons in the following order: press the volume up (high volume key) ==> press volume key down (low volume key) ==> press the power key ==> press volume down key.
- Wait a moment and look at the screen, a message such as loading new software will start the hard reset process

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Exhibit II 4G (SGH-T679) Can't Boot

My Galaxy Exhibit II 4G is about a year old, rooted and i have CM11 installed. Everything was fine, I had it plugged in (charging) and i was downloading an app (Camscanner) from the Mobogenie store when suddenly the phone shut off and the battery icon appeared with the loading circle in the middle.
This did not stay on for long as the screen would go off and this would again appear. After pulling the battery and removing the charger, then reinserting the battery, the phone would just flash the SAMSUNG logo in this very same manner.
I am unable to get into either recovery or download modes and when i try this combination (VOL UP + VOL DWN) i get:
RAMDUMP MODE
Cause: Force Upload
I have been reading forums for hours and i have found nothing. Is my device bricked? What can I do to recover it? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated :crying:

Thanks for replying. Nothing happens. It just continues to reboot like I'm not doing anything. The only way I'll get a reaction out of it is with vol up + vol down
It can be tricky. This post may be clear http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32437850&postcount=6
The link you sent me to sounds similar to my problem, except I wasn't trying to update the firmware. The crash was spontaneous.
However, neither of those methods work. As soon as I put in the battery the SAMSUNG logo appears, then disappears and reappears and it continues like that... Pressing the power button does nothing, whether by itself or with the volume up/down button
I am beginning to panic
What happens when it's connected to power?

Anyway, after many hours of investigation I discovered it was a hardware problem. The power button was stuck and so it forced it to reboot repeatedly. It also explains why it (the power button) was unresponsive. Disassembling the phone and freeing up the power button solved the problem.
P.s. Your build of CM11 is boss
I have same problem with power button. Had to tweak it hard cause it was so sensitive.
It's the first time it's happened to me. Probably because I dropped it so many times

I also get ram dump mode error when trying to manually boot recovery.
I have been reading forums for hours and i have found nothing. Is my device bricked? What can I do to recover it? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated :crying:

OK so I'm no expert or anything but maybe my experience with this Model might be able to help you a little bit. I have the same model and it was doing the exact same thing however I haven't rooted it. And I've since corrected the issue on mind particularly it appeared that it was the charge port and/or USB that either had a bad connection or possibly it was boot looped. However with me not rooting the I didn't understand how it could be booted Looped so I started playing around with holding the power button playin with USB things of this nature and what I found was that if I hold the USB to one side either left or right, this allowed me to help a boot farther into it sequence at first to just show the Samsung logo over and over then I could get it to get to the boot sequence about halfway through the boot animation until I finally got to the exhibit screen where displays its model and 4G status. I accomplish this by holding the USB to one side and pushing and holding the power button intermittently throughout the boot. Once I hit the unlock screen unlock the device and I immediately factory data reset it. I'm under the impression that mine was possibly I think that mine was somehow a corrupted bootloader or software still I don't know what caused it to backed up to this day occasionally it'll shut itself down and reboot on me that's why I'm here today I've got all the parts and pieces I need to flash a new rom and hopefully new software the new work over I'll be good to go I also cleaned the USB port made sure that it was still snug to the board all of the good stuff. I don't know if it'll help you but I had the same situation I thought you'd like to know that it was probably not what you were doing with the phone it may just be the software itself with this particular phone see I done nothing that you didn't had the exact same problems. I hope it was somewhat helpful if you haven't gotten it unlocked or re-booted yet. Then maybe just play around with the power sources and power buttons. And see if you can get the same results I did

New GT-P1000 Owner - Won't load past startup animation

I just acquired as P1000 model. I am having 2 problems. 1 I think I fixed, but the other is beyond me.
Problem 1 - When I plug the charger in and I use the USB cord from my 2.1A wall outlet I get a batter logo with a spinning circle and then it flashes dark and starts over again. I think I've tracked this down to the tablet not liking my charger as it charges fine off my laptop.
Problem 2 - After letting it charge for a while, I went to power it up and it gives me the Galaxy Tab logo, but then it goes to a boot animation that is some triangles flipping over each other. It sits on this for a while, then it goes to a black screen and starts the same triangle boot animation all over again.
I've tried searching repeatedly to no avail and I can't seem to find out what I need to do in order to fix this. I welcome any advice, I don't know if it's modded or stock, or what kernel is even on it. When I push the volume down and power buttons I get a note about downloading with a picture of an Android with what looks like a shovel pointed backward.
1stly try factory reset through recovery (by pressing & holding volume up then press power button) to see if it solved your problem.
2ndly if the first method didn't you need to flash the phone with odin using stockrom in download mode (by pressing & holding volume down then press power button).
you can get your stockrom at sammobile or google it.
and also Next time when reporting an issue consider putting Screen shot for better understanding.

Is my ASUS ROG Phone 3 bricked? Screen doesn't turn on

Could someone point me into a direction what exactly the problem is? I have used this phone on unofficial LineageOS 18.1 for a few months but suddently after dropping it from not all to high the screen displayed lines and colors similar to those that you see when you drop your phone into water (there was no water contact and the phone didn't fall that great of a distance, maybe like 1 meter/ 3ft).
My first guess is that the screen is broken, but I tried using ADB to extract some files still on the device but was unable to, especially I can't boot into fastboot or recovery it seems...
When pressing the power button the phone vibrates
Pressing the power button and volume down key reboots the phone (as seen on PC). Holding them down a long time shuts the device off or something. it can only be turned back on when plugged in.
I tried all possible button combinations to enter fastboot or EDL but nothing seems to work (Power + Volume Up / Volume Up + Volume Down while connecting to a PC with USB 2.0).
On my PC the device shows up as "MTP USB Device", everytime, not sure if I'm doing the EDL thing wrong...
EDIT: After leaving the device for a day, it suddenly started to vibrate and repeat the sound I guess plays when battery is low, over and over again in an increasing volume. The volume buttons had no effect as did the power button until it stopped and then didn't respond anymore. After plugging it in again it was back to vibrating once after i pressed the power button. What mode is this??
Any help would be greatly appreciated, not sure if it is even bricked but it seems off that I can't enter fastboot or anything else (like EDL), thanks!
