Xiaomi problem with Instagram (Video Encoder / low fps / wrong profile?) - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

I made a short video to show the problem: youtube.com/watch?v=zHTiiJTL2JU
A lot of Xiaomi Smartphones have very bad performance when it comes to video encoding (e.g. Instagram Video Stories, Adobe Premiere).
Interesting fact: If you upload the exact same video file with different phones, the result is not the same.
Uploading Video Stories on Instagram with a Mi 9 ends up in a desaster. The input file with 30 fps will be shown with 15 fps for no reason.
The same file uploaded with a Huawei P9 Light works.
So what's the problem here? Instagram is using a bad encoding profile for Xiaomi Phones?
Who could fix this? Xiaomi? Google? Android? Instagram?
Any Ideas?
I tried to contact Xiaomi, but they're not interested in fixing this problem.
For instagram users, Xiaomi Phones are not useable right now :-/

It's a ROM related issue.
I tried on GSI and it's smooth as it should be

Hm :-/ It's a brand new smartphone. Always a bad feeling flashing it.
What I've seen so far, many things don't work with GSI Rom.
But thanks for your quick reply

The only thing that doesn't work on GSI at the moment is FP on always on display, and that it's a little bit less reliable in my opinion.
By the way, it might just be a problem with media profiles

FP always on is not important to me.
Sorry I'm a noob! But, there is no chance to change "media profiles" with Xiaoimi stock Rom, right?
Anyways, wich ROM exactly could you recommend? Maybe I'll give it a try.

Try using the H.265 video encoder with the stock camera app and then upload to Instagram. This fixed the problem for me and I am in the latest Xiaomi.eu rom.

No audio in slow motion recordings in MIUI?

I've noticed this because I switch roms frequently, I had to record a slow motion video but on the MIUI rom there is no sound!
There is it with the google camera in LineageOS...Wtf.... Is this supposed to be a feature or a bug? I will never switch to MIUI once again, that's ridiculus

oh, Well last i was on lineage like when 14.1 was newest and there was no 8.0 rom so i dont remember much ;D
That is by design, so it's a feature. I use google camera for that, though (it has sound). Luckily if I want slow motion in google camera to work, it requires media_profiles.xml that will break video functionality of MIUI camera.

Yes, I experienced that, so I decided to use just LineageOS instead. Also for Camera2API

Instagram Stories videos low framerate?

Is anyone facing problems with Stories videos? Whenever I try to upload a video, from my gallery, the video lags SO MUCH...
And if I try to record a video directly in Instagram app, the video lags EVEN MORE.
The experience with this social network, in a whole, is a little bit crappy, with the Mi A2...
It's so sad, because I really love this phone, specially the camera.
Well, is anyone facing the same problem? Is there any fix?
Thanks in advance! <3
Same problem, only with GBintsa stories work fine
Same problem, but only video story.
I also have this issue and always had it with every Android smartphone I ever owned. I investigated a bit on the internet and read somewhere that Instagram handles the Android camera API in a ****ty way. I'm no expert but seemingly the difference is that iPhone always uses the same API or just some different version because there are not many models on Android however there are probably more than 1000 different camera APIs because there is a much bigger variety of models. In short: Instagram on Android is not very well optimized.
I had the same issue with my MI A2 i fixed it buy installing a previous version of the instagram app I had the go like 10 vesrion before to get it right though and i lost the gif feature in messages but let's hope the update wont have the same problem.
Instagram beta works fine for me
Edit: NO IT'S NOT!!
Also recording from stock camera app in 1080p 60fps and then posting as story is fine
I also had this kind of issue, which is also present in older device like Redmi Note 4 in MIUI. I don't know what make its bugged tho

You have to think that you don't have an iphone, and you don't record smooth video on instagram app. Record on camera app and share it on your story.
Also photos you sent on instagram are in very tiny resolution (dm)

I think this is a decoder related thing.. because screenshots look bad, but photos taken from camera looks good. Any video other than 1080p 60 fps from stock camera looks stuttering; but it also has very bad sound quality... That's really fuktup xiaomi..

The problem with the sound program will solve Cinema FV-5.
Go to the sound settings and put a tick on the Disable Audio Automatic gain Control (AGC). The sound starts being processed by the application's algorithms.

Instagram stories are smooth on my mi a2 running android P with the latest instagram update. Last time i was on android 8.1, the latest version of instagram has the choppy stories problem. Try updating to android P.
It's been months and still my stories are 15 fps.... what a joke...
This crap needs to get fixed. No matter which account I the video is choppy/laggy. If i shoot video inside the app the review looks good. once it uploads it's laggy. If I save the video to my phone... it's choppy. If i have a video already on my phone and I upload it to stories to the normal feed... it's choppy AF.
I'm on 8.1 oreo with RAW enabled. This suuuucks
Can someone confirm that the videos are better or smoother in Android P?

YESS this also happened to me, im using redmi note 5 rn and the current rom is in miui 10 global stable
The solution is to install the older version of instagram. I'm from Brazil and I found this solution, if you want to solve it and see everything fast again use this version here: 51.0.0.20.85
Search google to download ...
Do not upgrade to the newer version, if it does not come back all over again.
Guys! I found the solution!! Try to use the
H.265/HEVC codec.

[FIX] Razer Phone 2 Viewfinder and EIS Fix Magisk Modules

Note:
- I am not responsible for anything that goes wrong with your device, bootloops, bricks, paperweights etc... Nothing should go wrong but hey i need to include this. If you need any help i will try my best to help you to fix it if you comment.
(Downloads at the bottom of this post in the attached files)
Should work with every Razer Phone 2
Installation:
Open Magisk Manager and head to the Modules page
Click on the plus(+) and select the file you want to install
To install more than one file, after one module has installed go back and redo the same process with the other file you downloaded
The Viewfinder Fix: Download Link If XDA Is Broken
It will replace your tuned camera file with the file that razer used in android OREO as that one has no issues with the viewfinderIssues: None that i know of so far, if you notice anything you can mention it in the comments but it is likely i cannot fix it
The EIS Fix: Download Link If XDA Is Broken
EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation) helps your videos look more stable, by default this is only available at 30fps and only in some apps. However, with this fix EIS will be enabled in any app that asks for it and it will work at 1080p 60fps.Make sure to not use the stock camera app with this but instead a gcam with 60fps support for this phone (like BSGs)Issues: It will break 4k 60fps recording, it just won't work. Also it will break 1080p 60fps recording on the front camera.
And finally, yes of course these modules work together
Also if you need anything else or want to join the Razer Phone community join our group on Telegram!
thanks!
Why is this needed? Can you provide any context? Are these features broken on stock, or just in Gcam?

on stock the camera viewfinder is blurry and colours smudge, making 3rd party apps like Instagram very bad with recording videos and not being able to see well on on what you're taking a picture of.
This issue came around with the pie update for razer phone 2 so I managed to fix the viewfinder issue by using the razer libs from android OREO.
This is for every app, not just gcam.
The EIS fix allows for video stabilization at 1080p 60fps.

I have made a couple comparison videos and here they are: (read the description of each as it describes what to look for if it is not immediately visible)
1. Stock Camera Libs through the gcam viewfinder
2. My module through the gcam viewfinder
3. Stock Camera libs recording a video of snapchat (it just records the viewfinder)
4. My module recording the same video in snapchat
Even with the low youtube quality as of now (still processing probably) the changes are noticeable

Using both of these and my gcam is much better. Viewfinder no longer has a ghosting effect, colors are better, and stabilization works.

Question Video is Rendering Over Sharped in Streaming apps like YouTube, Prime Video and Local player's also like MX player etc.

Hello Everyone,
A few days ago, I purchased the Redmi Note10s, which worked very fine in every aspect of the smartphone, but I've found issues of video rendering in apps like YouTube and others even in 1080P.
But The Strange thing is that while playing the same video on the youtube website using Firefox browser it renders perfectly and Amazing.
Below I've attached the screenshot of the same video playing in those two different apps.
YOUTUBE:
As You'll see below the SS of the YouTube Sample is Over sharped and isn't pleasing to the eyes
FIREFOX:
In the samples of Firefox, it renders the way we want with perfect colours and sharpening.
Is this problem with Software or GPU rendering, I don't know. If anyone having this phone please share your opinions or thoughts on this, and also let me know if anyone facing the same issue.
P.S: this is my first post on XDA community, hoping XDA community will help with this problem.
i have the same issue ... i sent it to mi store to check it up for a few days and they said it was alright ...
i also checked another note 10 s device in the store .. it has the same issue
the issue exist in youtube and google chrome ....
not sure if its a software issue that will be fixed or bad qc
since u posted 20 days ago .. did u do anything about this issue ?
I have come across the thing called video decoding, which is done mainly by GPU or processor. In our phone, a MediaTek processor is used which is using a technology called MiraVision to render the HDR video which causing the issue while playing video in lower quality like 480P. Some solutions I found on Reddit is saying to disable the hardware overlays to solve the issue, as this problem already faced by redmi note 8 users. But didn't solve our issue.
But idk why I'm used to this as video of 720P is much sharper and feels good now
i kinda like it although it might have to do something with miravision
best is to ask people using realme 7 and redmi note 8

It maybe an issue with MiUI's VP9 renderer (VP9 is a new codec developed by Google as a free alternative to HEVC ,or H265).
The codec is used by default by YouTube since it offers higher compression compared to previously used H264 codec (AVC).
The codec is all fine, and it is absolutely recommended to use it since it offers better clarity and saves data at the same time.
The problem is with MiUI's VP9 rendering algorithm which is over-sharpening the video. I suggest you to contact Xiaomi to fix the issue, and disable VP9 in YouTube Vanced for time being.
If the above solution didn't work, you may try changing the decoder in MX Player [Try all 3 decoders - HW, HW+, and SW.]
If you don't observe any changes, use the mx_aio custom codec.

Question Videos sent by WhatsApp with very poor quality

Hello guys,
The videos recorded with the camera application when they are sent by Whatsapp are sent with very poor quality, with slowdowns (lag), as if the moment of compiling or compacting the video by the WhatsApp app was not right. I have a Mi11 Lite and my previous Mi9 this did not happen (a colleague with the Xiaomi 12 does not have this problem either), it is true that when sending via WhatsApp the quality drops, but in the case of the Xiaomi 12 PRO it is horrible, a video remains useless.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Do you think it's a problem with the phone or WhatsApp?
My Xiaomi 12 PRO is de EEA with actuality version 13.0.17.0 (SLBEUXM) but I have this problem since I bought it, 2 MIUI updates have already passed but the problem has not been fixed
Thank you for your answers.

I was facing the same issue too when I sent the video to my colleague through WhatsApp. They complain that the video is stuttering and unpleasant to watch. Then I tried to send through WeChat, the quality is good. So I guess it's due to WhatsApp. You may try to send through other apps and see the result.
Thanks for your answer, yesterday I installed GoogleCamara and if you record the video from the Google Camera and send it it is seen correctly...then it makes me doubt if the problem is Miui Camera...I found complaints from Oppo users with the same problem. It's a problem that annoys me very much, I love the phone, it's amazing, but these things leave a bad taste in my mouth... and even more so being a €1,000 phone... let's see if with some WhatsApp update or of the Miui Camera is solved. greetings and thanks

If someone can think of how I can solve the problem or contact Xiaomi to see if they know they have this problem in their "top of the range" phone, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Last MIUI version (.18 EEA) and the last Whatsapp version (2.22.13.70), both updated yesterday and we continue with the bad compresion with the sending videos... very sad.
I'm also using version 13.0.18 (EEA), and the videos recorded by Miui Camera work perfectly on whatsapp.
Try to update your camera to version 4.3.0 (Chinese Rom), and in the camera settings, make sure to use the h.264 codec

Thanks for your answer, i will check. Do you had the problem with the old Miui Camera version? Actually i have a 4.3.004030.0 version, where do you downloaded your version? Thanks for all.
This weekend i could test with differents videos resolutions and discovered that when do you recording with 4K 30 or 60 FTP this problem with Whatsapp disappear or is it not so obvious but if you recording with 1080 30/60 the problem appears.
Hi Guys. Easiest solution to this is disabling both HDR and HLG from camera settings menu. Also, do not select HDR manually while recording a video. MIUI 13 has no internal decorders to convert HDR/HLG videos back to normal while sending in whatsapp.

This did not work for me. The only thing that worked was switching to 4K which is not really a viable long term solution. Anything 1080p does not send properly. However, if I run the video through something like "stabilize footage" in Google Photos and then send it, it will be fine.
Nonono, nothing solved. Pictures taken by whatsapp or insta are very very poor like Very low resolution. Also videos taken directly from the app. This phine is like a **** of xiaomi didn't find a solution it is a garbage
Any news?
Still no solution, I'm on miui 13.0.10.0 and camera is updated 4.5, and whatsapp latest version. It's still a stuttershow. Poor
Send the video to telegram then from telegram send it to whatsapp. seems to be the only solution
If I convert it to 720p in the editor, it will 'solve' the problem
This is the last time I buy Xiaomi.
Had enough of them.
Also the issue with the mute button during a call is frustrating .
Also having the same issue with a Mi 11i. Any video that gets compressed or reencoded by WhatsApp turns into a stuttery blurry mess. Very annoying.
Just realized I have same problem
I understand no solution?
Gotta try with my xiaomi 13 pro, will let you know
Here's what I found out.
1. Whatever the resolution, if I enable HDR, when sending via WhatsApp the other party receives only one second of footage with wrong colors
2. If using H.264 or H.265 but 1080p and no HDR, sending via WhatsApp, the other party receives a stuttering video
3. If setting 4K or 720p and no HDR, video received is smooth
