Magisk Not Working On Pie ROMs - Xiaomi Redmi 4X Questions & Answers

It's been awhile but the last time this was brought up was in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-redmi-4x/help/magisk-doesnt-pie-roms-t3848025
Eversince interacting with the people in the thread I've been stuck on Oreo Non-treble for almost a year now, I've been dying to upgrade to 9.0, but the thing is the problem I had almost a year ago STILL persists to this day. I've tried installing Latest Magisk 19.0/19.1 on Latest AEX, Havoc and, PE.
I don't want to be stuck on Oreo forever, please to those who got root (Magisk) working on their Pie ROMS please help me. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and help me!

I did what you said before posting this thread but flashed 19.0 and 19.1. I'll do it again with 18.1 later, i'm currently back on oreo.

So, I have had a problem for several months. With magisk. Always shows me not installed on stock kernel. Then I install gabriel kernel and magisk root my phone.
Try!
I do not have to worry about switching the phone off or restarting. Magisk just works.

Hi
Same problem, same solution : flash a custom kernel ! Jaguar kernel works, Gabriel kernel seems to work too !

What's the order of the flashing? Do I flash the Kernel right after the GAPPS or do I flash it after the initial setup (allowing the phone to boot and finish the setup)

I do:
Clean partitions,
Flash rom,
Flash kernel
Flash magisk,
Reboot to system.
I dont know how it with gapps because i use microg
I think you ncan flash gapps after rom, then reboot nto system, then reboot to recovery and flash the other things.

And? Did you run magisk on pie?

Magisk and custom ROM update

Hi, I'm using Magisk on my LG G2 with RessurectionRemix 5.7 and am looking to update to the Nougat version 5.8. I want to start clean, so will wipe system before the update, but will I have to flash Magisk again after that? What are the steps here, flash the ROM + gapps, unroot, flash Magisk?

Flashed the ROM and magisk last night, so far so good, safetynet passes I went for a clean install this time, but if I was to dirty flash an update now would magisk survive that?

No because Magisk modifies the boot image, which gets overwritten with a new one when you flash a ROM, clean or dirty. So you'll need to flash Magisk again.

Was suspecting this might be the case, thanks for clarifying this. At least I know all the steps now, should be only getting more familiar with every flash

afaik Resurrection Remix has addon.d (check if /system/addon.d exists)
you can test this https://github.com/osm0sis/GN-Synap...mdisk/res/synapse/scripts/999-customkernel.sh or modify it to flash magisk instead of the backup (in case you got an updated kernel)

Flashed an RR update to 5.8.1 over the weekend and it went smoother than I expected, to be honest. Didn't use the script you mentioned in the end, just flashed the new ROM, gapps, unsu.zip, magisk and phh's su in TWRP and rebooted. Simple.

Yes, of course the manual method works :good:
phh-SU was removed in Magisk v11 btw - root is now integrated (MagiskSU).
I still need to have phh's Superuser management app installed. And now on boot I get a notification that my SU binary is out of date. The transition here has been a bit rough.

Are you on about updating your ROM or magisk? Phh su app is required for magisk v10.2, you need to remove it if you're using magisk v11 or later

In reference to this, does reflashing Magisk alter anything within Magisk? Namely and really the only thing that would come to mind is it downgrading the Manager app to whatever is in the installer and possibly resetting it settings.

Boot failure when installing ElementalX 4.20 with latest Pure Nexus and Magisk

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I clean install Purenexus 7.1.2 (latest) with the recommended gapps, let it boot and get setup. Then I install Magisk and let it fully reboot. Then I try installing the ElementalX 4.20 kernal and it won't finish booting after that. Help! I did it twice now and got the same result.

Hello,
Maybe try this way:
Install ROM and reboot to system
Reboot twrp, Install kernel first and magisk.
Reboot.
Good luck...
That seems to be working. Thanks!

Hey,
You're welcome.
As both Magisk and EXKernel alter boot.img, I guess EX needs to be installed first. If you install after Magisk, it brakes a part of Magisk modifications. Hence the bootloop. But it's just an assumption.
Cheers...
Mmmh,
I did a clean flash with ROM (purenexus_shamu-7.1.2-20170423-OFFICIAL), GApps (BeansGapps-Mini-7.1.x-20170415) - reboot and start new system.
Than I fashed Magisk-v12.0 for root and installed Magisk-Manager.
After that I flashed ElementalX-N6-4.20 (and today ElementalX-N6-4.21).
Everything runs without any issue!
Yeah I was kinda wondering what happens when I try to install a kernel update since that would be like what I was doing before.

Error 1 after reflashing ROM, can't (un)install Magisk

Hello, so I decided to reflash my ROM because I kept running into issues, and I didn't uninstall Magisk before doing so.
Then when I tried flashing Magisk it showed me error 1. Flashing the uninstaller gives the same error. Magisk Manager shows that it is not installed, Root Checker states that the device is unrooted, and so far the only app that mentioned my phone being rooted is LastPass.
What can I possibly do to reinstall Magisk so it's back on my device in its full grace?
I checked other posts and either they are not related to my problem or didn't help
Phone: Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon, Recovery: official TWRP non-treble, ROM: latest build of official AOSP Extended
Maybe try dirty flashing and flashing Magisk again?
Not Sally when Magisk is already installed, I can flash it again with no problem. Weird that you're having these issues. ?

Did you wipe everything? Wipe system and data before re flashing your rom.
@LennyTheCat To be absolutely sure what's going on you're going to have to provide the recovery log, saved after you've attempted you flash Magisk.

Well... You're using a Treble ROM, right? So I'm assuming you're using a Treble modified Magisk version (since there's no official Treble support in Magisk yet)... If not, I'm sure you can find the relevant information in your ROM's thread.
Always go to the source...

Has anyone installed the PE rom yet? I tried yesterday, following the instructions, and just got a boot loop after flashing the PE recovery rom.
However, the instructions confused me a little...

fastboot flash boot <recovery_filename>.img

Should that be 'fastboot flash recovery' ??
Also, I'm not coming from stock but from a custom ROM (riceDroid). Would that make a difference?

Hey, I ran into the same problem today. If I find a solution, I'll let you know. I would be glad if you share too.
I tried again yesterday to install Pixel Experience, and again it just boot loops when booting into recovery mode. I've now reinstalled stock Miui and will try again.

There no recovery partition so it shouldn't. I'm on this ROM currently and have no problems with installation. The guide says that you need to be on latest global a11 miui (12.5.16.0.RKLMIXM). You didn't miss that?

I've no idea what version of the bootloader I'm on as getprop ro.bootloader returns 'unknown'
But, as I'm on "latest" v13 Miui, I suspect the bootloader is the wrong one. Do I have to downdate to 12.5 before installing PE?
Edit: I've downdated the device to 12.5 RKLMIXM and have flased the PE recovery image, all okay. It's now installing the PE zip, so fingers crossed that's it.
Edit edit: I have PE on my device! Thank you at @xuser_0 for highlighting were I'd gone wrong.
The key @JohanGriman appears to be to ensure your device is not on the latest Miui but the latest 12.5 version.
Is there any instructions on how to install Magisk on this? I've tried to usual ways (via apk and flashing .zip thru adb sideload) but it fails to repack the boot image. Will a manual patch of the boot image and reflash work?
Edit: I've been able to directly patch the PE recovery image (as used in the installation process) using the Magisk apk on my device. Can I now flash this patched image to the device?
I don't want to try it as other instructions I've found talk about a vbmeta image that needs to be flashed too, and I don't know if that's necesary.... and I don't want to trash my device again!
Just flash it but it will break safetynet. To fix safetynet enable Zygisk, add google play services to deny list and install shamiko.

Question Can someone help me with rooting my note 10 pro?

I'm new here on this site and idk if I'm doing I correctly but I need help with it. I'm a noob to rooting and Twrp stuff. I have unlocked my bootloader and have tried to watch videos about rooting and read articles but I couldn't understand. That's why I am posting this thread. Hello Sir, sorry to disturb you again. I have installed the adb, fastboot and fastbootd drivers. I need your help with something, should i continue with the latest version of Magisk? I have Redmi note 10 pro (sweet)
Because you are a starter, I advice to follow the guide exactly.
If you flash a lower version of Magisk, you always can update afterwards with Magisk manager
You haven't said what the reason is for root.
If you want to flash custom rom, you need Twrp or OrangeFox too
That is also done with ADB
In case of Magisk you patch the original boot.img
(that is why you need an original stock boot.img. Keep a copy for revert back)

Im following the guide that you have given the link for. And by update do you mean I can install new updates of the phone (because I know after rooting you can't or won't receive updates) or do you mean magisk by it? Well I want to modify and tweak with my Phone appearance and install some modules. For now Im not going for custom roms. Since I just want to root my phone for now, could you please tell me what do you mean by original stock boot.img? Because I have downloaded and extracted the rom contents that i have in my phone (following the guide). I know I am asking too much, sorry
p.s. what would you like to suggest me to use the latest version of magisk or some old version?
I mean update of Magisk.
The older versions are working with the same modules till v23
From v24 Magisk has another base (zygisk) and you need other modules
So decide which modules you need for which Magisk version, before flashing
Inside the stock rom you find boot.img and recovery.img (these are replaced by magisk.img and twrp.img)
If something goes wrong you can flash these original images back with ADB and you have stock Miui without root again and can start again with clean sheets.

If you only flash Magisk you only need boot.img
I see now what you mean
Normally inside the stock fastboot rom you find all partition images, but you recognize only the boot.img
Boot.img is one of them, also recovery.img is one of about 13 partitions.
Be sure to double check the version. It must be exactly the same as what you have now on the phone.

Actually i was having problem with flashing the modules, because the contents are in the zip file in a folder and they need to be outside of any folder meaning all those files need to be in the zip instead of being in a folder in the zip. Clean install? With format data yes?
Which kernel vantom latest?
If yes, try the lineage os original kernel again.
Sorry for late reply. Everything has been working okay with modules altho i didnt install alot of them but a few. So i guess there weren't enough modules which provided me any customization for Miui 13 because i had the wrong concept. Now i want to take it a step further, i want to flash a custom rom. I have looked and searched. Have decided to go for either Pixel Exp A12 or AncientOS A12 (It has alot of customizations). Now i want to ask you a few questions that i have in mind.
1) Should I flash Custom Rom through Twrp?
2) If so, do i need to flash that Dm verity file (because when I installed twrp in my stock rom which im still using rn, they told us to do that to avoid bootloop and to keep Twrp permanent so do i also need to do it with custom rom?
3) And if its safe to flash through Twrp, Could you please tell me how to (through twrp if its safe)?
4) Which Rom should i go for? Pixel or AncientOs
lineage Os
