Moto Style Shells. Anyone Use Them? - Moto Z4 Accessories

I think these shells or "skins" look pretty cool. But, I've read the "wood" ones kill the signal. I have also read they make the phone hot. Any feedback?
Moto seems to be having a fire sale on the fabric ones right now but that is spoiled when you add in shipping.
https://www.motorola.com/us/products/moto-mods/moto-style-shell
Also have read all the Mods fit poorly on this phone. Not that I care as don't want to drag around a brick in my pocket or carry camera bag.
BTW, I really like this phone. Official U. S. Verizon issue. Very bloatware, adware, crapware, and vampireware free. Fast. Long battery life. I charge it once a day but it has yet to go below 50%. Can't burn fuel that isn't in your tanks (aviation advice). First bootloader still locked, no TWRP, no root phone I've had in years. Felt lost the first the first week but surprisingly, I think I will survive. Mostly miss TiBackup and GravityBox. TWRP backups were always comforting to have in emergencies too. No data, no Google restore. Which reminds me. When this baby came home, either via a Moto, VZW, or Google uitilty (sorry I didn't pay attention), I linked the phones and just about everything, including data, migrated. Seemed like this process completed in the background over several hours.
Only $240 if I can stay with VZW for two years. I THINK THIS IS A GREAT PHONE!

Using it on the Z2 Force (still waiting for Bumpers and Root on the Z4) the Style shells aren't bad. The nylon ones, the ones I have, really don't have much of an issue at all. Can't say the same for the wood or other ones as I haven't tried them.

I would like to try a wireless charging shell...
They need to make a battery pack that has wireless charging built in. Come on Moto

Good luck with that. The dedicated, loyal Moto Z community has been crying out and asking Moto to produce more of the Wireless style shells for literally years. They have totally ignored us, and it is very unlikely any new ones will ever be released. Your only hope will be the second hand market such as ebay.
There was a battery pack from Incipio I believe that had wireless charging too, and again, because Moto totally disregarded their customers, Moto mods failed to be popular enough and Incipio stopped producing them.

The TUMI battery Moto Mod does just that. I love its dual functionality.

I have the QI charging style shell. It does exist. Mine has the ballistic nylon covering and it's getting rough... Had it since my Z1. Moto offered it but now it seems to be gone which makes zero sense to me.

I know it exists, because I have one too. But try and find a retailer outside of the US stocking them - they don't exist.

Yeah I was careless in my reply. I wish Motorola would make it available again.
Sent from my moto z4 using Tapatalk

I use style shells and Moto Folio Cases. They give some protection to the screen as well as are easy to remove to use the mods. The best I've found for the z4 is one actually released only in China which is made of poly-carbonate and leather. When closed the screen is see through so you can see the time and notifications. It also has the added benefit of not interfering with the Microsoft Surface pen which works on the phone so you can write and navigate with the pen while the cover is closed.
You can search for it in amazon as "Moto folio cap mod".

Desk Docks...

Not sure when or if Defy will get its own Deck Dock. But my wife got me these somewhat useless business card holders. However, as they're steel, I stuck a magnet to the back, put in my Defy and voila! Deck Dock!

No... well, OK: lousy pictures but you get the picture. First shows magnet, second "docked" Defy. (Magnet came from Radio Shack).

Wouldn't the BB Torch's charging dock suit?
Hi all,
Within weeks I'll receive my first Android phone, after 5 years using WM. Really hope to get adapted to this new platform. It's that I'm that lucky guy who has happened to win Clove's Motorola Defy giveaway competition .
Anyway, this is purely theoretical, but I have noticed that the Blackberry Torch 9800, closed, is slightly bigger than the Defy, in all 3 dimensions. Besides, its charging dock + home charger (you'll be able to find some of them on eBay, like e.g. this one) takes the Torch in landscape mode, and seems to have its male micro-USB port more to the right side, related to its center, which could match the Defy's. Don't know whether it bears a magnet or not, though. Or, if it is be placed in the same location as required by the Defy sensor. Despite all 'ifs', I wonder if the Defy would fit in.
Anyone here would be brave enough to try one of those and see if it fits?
Just my 2 cents...
Regards,
Carlos
Do you have a BB Torch to compare? The USB adpater would have to be in the same orientation as the Defy's, which is "upside down" (narrow edge up). You'd have to have room to move the USB cover aside on the Defy too.

Unfortunately, not. It was pure speculation. Maybe someone here can make a simple test...
According to Mobilefun.co.uk, this thing should fit the defy as well...
Anyone feel like taking one for the team and putting their claims to the test? Looks like a nice dock but I'm afraid that A) it won't fit snugly and B) the usb cover will get in the way.

It might be worth asking them if they can provide photos to back up their claim.
It's in their best interest after all as I'm sure a few of us are interested in finding a decent desktop dock for their Defy.
What? Milestone (Droid)'s dock?
I don't see how the Milestone's dock would suit the Defy, since the former's micro-USB port is to the left, whilst the latter's is to the right.
I might me heavily wrong though (as usual)...
Regards,
Carlos
Anyone had any luck finding a dock for this thing? I am interested as well.
Some guy's come up with a DIY Dock, credits to uploader
Sorry can't paste links so go to youtube and type in "Motorola Defy media dock"
Looks neat
It's made of cardboard - cereal box style. Good effort tho.
Could be a market for aftermarket stands if someone wants to make them... worked for a guy on maemo.org for the N900. He made them out of laser cut wood and sold them via an online shop he set up. Was very popular.
Considering one of these docks
There are lots of docks for the droids and milestones but none designed for the defy yet. But I did come across a couple candidates that I am considering and wondered if anyone had tried either of them yet.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DM4KLW/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A2LD2YC4L2Z2RO
http://www.clingo.com/home-and-office/universal-podium/
I am leaning towards the first one listed from amazon but the second also looks pretty nice. Neither has a build in charger that will line up with the defy but they have plenty of open space to allow for a usb to plug in.
I use a Clingo which is simple. It doesn't have the magnet required to automatically activate dock mode, of course.

dock/nightstand for my dinc

I made this dock/nightstand for my droid incredible. I would show you how good it looks with the phone in it, but I used my phone to take the picture.

Really?
I shared what I had built as it was at the moment. Isn't that what this developer's forum is all about? Perhaps you can help us all out and run over to every thread where someone has posted a beta, alpha, or nightly and let them know that they have an epic fail for not making sure it was not needing any more development before they posted it.

It would be interesting to hear how hot it gets. even in my old otter box case the thing use to cook. i can imagine wood. but never the less it looks awesome. great work.
Nice job man! Love the black carved out Androids!
That's pretty awesome. I'd be too afraid of the heat though. Still great build nonetheless.
Good job on the dock. It's pretty cool...you even got a little notch for the camera on the droid inc.
I wish I was half as creative and handy as you. Very nice job!
That's pretty cool! I actually cruised over here to see if anyone made their own dock recently.
finally
Finally got around to taking a picture of the dock with the phone in it. The display is the "night display" from Gentle Alarm. In the background, you can even see part of the landline and the alarm clock made not necessary by the phone in the dock.
wow over 1600 views
I just looked at this thread and realized over 1,600 people have looked at my dock. Wow. I have been using it for several months as an alarm clock in the dock every night and so far no heat issues. It has been working out very well. After seeing how many people were interested in a dock I think I should have offered to make and sell them. I still could, but I imagine the market for a new dock for this old phone is dwindling.
I would buy one. Red androids please.

Ok, if you want one I can make one. I wouldn't expect to be making very many of these so each one could be customized. That one was made in pine which I stained with a pecan stain. I have since come across some walnut boards. I could make one in walnut which would look much better than pine. If you want some other type of wood I can see about getting some. I used a micro to standard USB cable which allows me to either plug it into the computer or into the standard dinc AC adapter. I can also change the design with more or less androids, your name or some completely different design, even a square or sculpted top rather than a round one.
If something in the neighborhood of 50 bucks is in your price range let me know along with any specifics of the design you want.
And, of course, for everyone elses' enjoyment I can post a picture here when it is done.
How do you have your usb plug secured in there? I've been trying to come up with a design for one of my own since I always use my phone as my alarm clock, but I've not come up with a good way to get the plug to stay in place so that the phone can be plugged in easily.

I placed the phone in the holder then I plugged the usb connector into it through the other hole I had cut for it. Then I put some gorilla glue around the plastic part of the plug being careful to keep it away from the end. Gorilla glue expands and fills the space around the plug. I lightly clamped the phone in place overnight, but a couple hours should be enough, and then when I removed the clamp, the plug is secured in place exactly where it needs to be.
Cool idea, looks great!

I agree. This whole thing looks like a USB hub with some repackaged phone parts. In some ways this is nice and I like how simple they made this, but it is more aimed at the average user. It is a cheaper version of Phone Blocks. I hate this fad of thin phones, but that doesn't mean I want a brick.
I can't tell what it is, you didn't bother to include that in your post. I'm not going to watch a video without knowing what the topic is, only to find out I'm not interested and just wasted my time.
Signature edited to appease the OCD's
I voted for it to help you out, but honestly I don't know I would ever use it unless it was really cheap. And even then I would probably only use it for battery and storage with other phones too (like in future I know g4 has these already). Not sure what else I would use with it.
For me this is a pretty gimmick, I don't see it selling well at all.
Now the actual phones which come with this sort of tech will be amazing, I mean who wouldn't want to buy a base unit and then specifically make a device for YOU!

I like it, it's kind of cute and simple but don't think a lot of people would be interested.. IMHO, i wasn't even sure what it was all about at first..
two words, ugly.pointless.
Great idea. Some I would use but it does add a lot of bulk to the phone. This might be good for iPhone since not much gets upgraded with each iteration. ? lol
This looks like a pretty cool idea, but as a third-party addon, probably it wouldn't be great. I imagine it'd be fairly delicate (cheap plastic) and not integrate well. Also, the one shown here is rather ugly.
Now, if this became sort of a standard thing, it'd be really cool. Same idea as Phone Blocks I guess, but I like this design a bit better (except for the colours). Have a raised "hub" in the middle with slots to plug things into, hotswappable. So you could e.g. just upgrade the camera, have two cameras for 3D photos, plug in extra batteries, lend one to your friend if they're running low, remove things like bluetooth if you never use them, or add new stuff like NFC if your phone didn't come with it.
let's just wait til project ARA reached mass production.
What's this.. i'm curious will it actually get realized.. huh..

Which one did you order? And I'm assuming you ordered it straight from Pebble? I'm interested in the brown leather/silver watch. I wish Best Buy had this option in store but it looks like they are only carrying the black/black. I'm kinda waiting for them to release so that I can see more hands-on and real world vids on YouTube and such about this watch. If It was $150 I wold have already pre-ordered, but at $250 I want to do a bit more research. They do have the 30-day return policy which is nice on Pebble.

I ordered the same one. Even at $250 I didn't mind. Pebble smart watches suit me the most. I've tried a handful of smart watches and ways go back go my original pebble even though I think it's ugly. I just never liked the previous designs. I love the moto 360's look but am not a fan at all of Android wear. So when this was released it almost looked like pebble remade the moto 360 so I was sold.
What functionality/design are you looking for? If you're not sure it couldn't hurt to try a couple and return them after a week or so.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
That ring around the outer edge of the screen is not... screen right? It's just a fixed piece of ... material? Not e-Ink? Every single picture I see of the Pebble Time has it so I assume it doesn't change.
Just got my PTS a few days ago after paying $250 and waiting 6 months.. Are they going to be offering a free upgrade or something? Are they seriously asking for another $250 for this?
Mine finally came in and I like it very much. It is very sleek and I was astonished at how light it is compared to some of the other smartwatches I've used. For sake of comparison I've owned the OG Pebble, Samsung Gear S2 Classic and the Moto 360. I think the black design of the round is kind of ugly but the silver with the leather band is quite nice. Oh and the quick charging works very well so far, we'll see how it goes with time. I just charge it while I shower and I've yet to have an issue with battery life. Let me know if you guys want pictures or have questions ^_^

Awesome! Mine it supposed to arrive Saturday. I can't wait already. This will be my first smartwatch. I did end up going with the sliver/nubuck band.
I have been using it for a little while now and I will tell you all what I found.
Design
I am a big fan of this watch I think it looks great. I also love the band, even though people knocked the included leather band, I found it extremely comfortable. It is easier to put on and feels far more comfortable than the included band for the Moto 360, OG Pebble, or even the Gear S2 Classic.
I think the main element that is drawing me to this watch is since it is so thin it is the most comfortable to wear throughout the day. It is easily the best looking of all the Pebbles (in my opinion). The only downside I see with the design is since it is so thin there is not as much room for the buttons. I find that I am pressing these buttons inadvertently throughout my day. All the sudden my Pebble will start the music on my phone randomly ( this happened only twice in one week). So that is one downside. The other is I feel like I have slightly big wrists so the smaller watch face size feels slightly out of place. Other than those two minor complaints, Pebble knocked it out of the park with this one.
Software
If you've used other Pebble Time iterations there isn't too much of a surprise here. It runs well, the animations are amazing, and I am a big fan of Timeline. It was every so slightly slow. coming from the lightning fast Gear S2 Classic I feel like I have to wait for the software to catch up. However, the Pebble's software is far more stable than the Gear. I had my Gear fail to respond to messages, update information and other annoyances during my time with it. I never had to worry about the Pebble not working.
I do wish that Pebble included a stock way to create text messages. At the moment you can only reply. So I use Pebble Dialer's third part app to alleviate this. It is not a perfect solution however.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well the voice features worked. I was worried it would never understand me, but is actually more accurate than my Gear S2 Classic. Not all the developers made round versions of their apps though, I will attach some pictures later of what apps are available. I do want to say that I never had a problem finding apps I wanted to use. All of the things I want on my smartwatch I had available to me. Hopefully more developers will update their apps to work with the Round.
Battery
I was a little disappointing in that the battery got neutered. What I was pleasantly surprised to learn though is how quickly it charges. I wear this watch every day and go to sleep with it. I run Morpheuz's sleep tracking all night when I wake up it usually has around 20-30% left. Not quite enough for another full day but I put the Pebble on the charger and shower. When I get out of the shower I am at 100%. So effectively, I am never worried about charging it. Now this means you will have to include your charger for long trips but this is not a big deal for me.
Conclusion
Overall, I find this watch extremely capable. I am sure you will all love it.

Here are some pictures, let me know if you want to see anything else

Which Pebble should I choose?

Hey guys, longish post ahead- but I would really appreciate your advice!
After a brief foray into the original Moto 360 a couple of years ago, I decided that I wanted to wait until the smartwatch market developed a bit more before putting down some cash on one (I ended up selling the Moto 360). Fast forward two years later, and I'm now looking for a smartwatch that will:
1.) Be reasonably durable against wear/tear; for this reason and the reason below, I'm not going for a nice $399 Huawei that I'll get scratched up anyways
2.) Be reasonably priced; $200 is about all I can justify spending on a time piece, especially since I see myself keeping a couple of swappable bands handy for customization
3.) Manage my notifications and calendar events in a straightforward way...in other words, I have no need for any fitness tracking functions
4.) Be formal enough to wear to classical and contemporary music concerts I perform in. This is actually a pretty important factor for me, as I perform a lot.
After many hours of research, I think a Pebble would be the best bet for me....Now the issue is choosing one. Which one do you think I should get? I have gone back and forth between the 3 models now, for the following reasons:
Pebble Time: It is only ~$125 on Amazon! That affords me extra spending room for alternate straps, wraps, etc. This is also the one model that I think encapsulates the "low-res GBC" attitude the best in its external styling. I thought that the Steel seemed to try a little to hard to be serious, which is a striking contrast to its not-so-serious UI.
Pebble Time Steel: Despite what I said above, I considered the Steel because it seems like the better fit for my concert performances, especially if I swap out the band for a metal one. I also appreciate the extended battery, and according to reviews it seems to have slightly better viewing angles.
Pebble Round: I have small wrists, so it seems that the Pebble Round would be the best aesthetic fit for me. That being said, I don't really like the round face all too much because makes the already small display that much smaller. Not sure if in real life this is a moot point, but I like having more information displayed at once. Also - not sure if this is still an issue now - but reviewers were complaining about how not all apps have been supported to fit the round screen...The reduction in battery life is also a bit of a downer, but honestly I wouldn't mind charging it every couple of nights or so, since I already charge my smartphone daily.
So....thoughts? What made you choose your current Pebble?
Thanks!
I think you meant Pebble Time Steel instead of Pebble Steel.
If battery life is not a concern go for the PTR instead. It has some design improvements over the Pebble Time, for example better button designs that are less likely to accidentally pressed by your wrist. The most popular apps already support PTR, and in my experience I rarely use apps on my Pebble anyway.
I bought my (classic) Pebble Steel before the time series became available, but I wouldn't change it for a Pebble Time (Steel). I don't need Pebble Health, Color Display and the "Send Texts"-App, and imho the classic Pebble Steel is still the best-looking model. I've also heard that the color display is more difficult to read in the sunlight.
I only use the straps that came along, but if you want to buy more you should consider that the Pebble Steel doesn't work with standard straps.
My first smartwatch was a Pebble Steel I bought used (and cheap). I did not think i would like it that much. Unfortunately the display gave up on me after a while. I just today ordered a Pebble Time, even though it may have shorter runtime and lower click response than the steel version but for me (as a shift worker without a fix schedule) this doe not bother me a lot. I like the lighter, a little sleeker version that fits my sportive ambitions better. And simply for the buttons, I would not the least pay the significantly higher price for the Steel.
To concern your points: I took the scratches-thing as a very serious problem, as the Pebble Time is known to take scratches very easily on the metal frame around the display. That is why I voted for the Pebble Steel, it surely is more impressive, too. As you do not care for the sports functions, I think it suits you better, as I personally do not want to go running/ swimming with a leather or metal strap, though the leather of the original Pebble Steel felt very comfortable and nice.
What I will do to avoid scratches on my Pebble Time is using some Bepple protectors (the name is somehow ridiculous) to protect it. Check it out, they got a special offer atm: http://www.clvrcover.com
You could wear this when not on a concert and when playing, you may take it off. Or chose a neon green one when accidentally playing on a punk concert
Good luck with you choice!
Regards
OG Steel more robust and better screen but many watch have screen tearing. No mic for input on OG Steel
time steel very beautifull mic for input (note, checklist.... ) no issue with screen but readibility lower than OG Steel.

Without screen Tearing I vote for OG Steel, but.....
Really love my Pebble Time Round. Don't really care about "apps" per se -- I use the watch as a notification device, not to "do" things (which is why i gave up on my Android Wear watch) -- and as that the smaller and round watch face works fine. It gives just enough information, but also looks nice. Battery life isn't great, but it gets about two days. For me, a guaranteed 24-hours is all I need. I'm going to charge my watch once a day, so as long as I'm SURE i can get through that day, I'm happy.
Like most things, whether it fits your lifestyle depends completely on how you end up using it. I imagine a lot of "power users" of Android Wear or even Pebble would hate the round.
