Custom Kernel support? - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

I have a general question about custom kernels.... Is a custom kernel specific to a device?
So can I currently install e.g. FrancoKernel or do I have to wait until it is supported...

A kernel is always highly device specific. It includes the low level interface to the hardware and as such needs the correct drivers for the individual hardware..

HIGHLY DEVICE SPECIFIC. I ran Franco for years on my Nexus devices but he'll never support a device he doesn't have and he'll never own one of these phones. Amazing Dev though. You can use his app still with these phones if you want to check it out

Why do you say he will never own one of these phones? He develops for pocophone, Redmi Note 3 and 4.

My mistake, its been a long time since I've checked in with Franco stuff :good:

Not only are custom kernels device specific but if you are unfortunate enough to own a device from XDA darlings One Plus there are separate kernels for Oxygen and non Oxygen based ROMs because there is so much code in Oxygen that veers from stock Android--in spite of the fact that reviewers always claim Oxygen is as close to stock Android as you can get. In reality Oxygen is as far as you can get from stock Android without buying an iPhone.
In spite of all the grumbling about MIUI and EMUI neither actually requires a kernel that won't boot up custom Android ROMs on the same phone.

I think that Mi9 will never get nice custom kernel. Mi9 SE has some, any SD855 has but not Mi9.. Dunno why. Kernel code was leaked before launching Mi9 sale.

Is any Dev working on some kernel??

[Q] Custom ROM for Xiaomi MI3

Hi everyone.
As we all know how popular the Xiaomi MI3 is, I was just wondering if there can be any possible Custom AOSP based rom for this device.
As we all know the Nexus 5 and Xiaomi MI3 have almost similar hardware would it be possible to port any nexus 5 roms to the MI3?
Agreed that Xiaomi doesn't release sources but is it possible to port something from nexus 5 due to similar hardware?
Simple answer is no. Without the kernel source code you can't get anything booting. Because they don't release the source code is the reason they have no forum and never will

Ohh I see. No point in having a forum if no source code is available.
By the way MIUI based custom roms can be developed right? Since they can use the stock kernel.

That they have but without any kernel source that is the best you will get. Is a port that may have bugs that can't be fixed (that the Og ROM doesn't have) due to no source. Also no kernel options like gov or over clocking ect.

Varun chitre has already made an alpha build of cm11 for this device without the kernel sources.
And yeah Xiaomi will be releasing kernel sources later this year

Why no stable custom ROM for A2

I don't get it
Why no developer is working on A2
There so many custom ROMs for note 5 pro
At least Lineage os
And official TWRP
because a/b pattition
you can flash gsi, or convert a2 to 6x, it have some custom roms (aex, havoc, pe), but newer 6x stock rom (miui) have arb.

A/b partitions are certainly not the problem as there are plenty of roms supporting this already.

So what's the problem I buy this for all
Custom ROMs
And extra. Modes
To unlock other features
For better kernel
And nothing is happening
Should I change my device

There is no problem. Look at mia1, for the same period last year there was no rom. Be patient if not change your device.

Nothing is happening because roms don't fall from the sky. Find some devs. Donate hardware to them, pay them. Or wait.

LineageOS for the A1 was released six! months after the device got released. So we are still within the normal timeframe for rom development.

Wow, didnt knew that, but its surprising for me. Thanks for this info
not so much stable ROM because this device still new just released July 2018 back then and Xiaomi just released the kernel for developer (read it somewhere I forgot, sorry I can't source it). Give the devs who interested some time to experiment with it and we will see much more ROMs in the next few months.
People buy the Mi A2 for the android one experience, not to change The rom. Custom roms are usually close to stock
Pure android, dont need custom rom....why ?

True
Because
Not stable
Bug's
Not optimized
Custom ROM provide latest extra patches
And extra custom setting's
Root runs perfect on custom ROM
stock it's give problem
And best Kernel's for better performance and battery life

Where are all the custom roms for the A2?

I'm sick of this buggy Android one "experience". I wanna flash a custom Rom but guess how many exist for the A2. 0 Roms exist. None. I know I should be patient, but it doesn't even seem like there will be official lineage os for this phone. Are there no developers for this phone? (outside of the hex kernel developer, thanks for developing the kernel!) It sucks that all the attention was taken away from the A2 by the Poco.
Edit: I'm not fond of the idea of converting to 6x.

Just out of curiosity, If you want so much a custom ROM, why don't you develop It yourself? Don't you think it's a bit too much to complain that no one took their free time and knolowedge to make your free roms?
That are so many people complaining that I'm seriously thinking of developing one and charging for It. How much would you pay for It?
Stock rom is full of bugs. Also it is not pure android it has some hidden bloatware (mi store etc).

Good question. I have no experience in rom developing or any kind of developing. I guess it does sound a bit selfish. But it's just that this is a nice phone and it doesn't have much development. Heck even my ZTE Blade V6 and Huawei p9 lite had more rom development.
I've never considered how much I'd spend on a rom. So I don't really have an answer.

For the MIA1 we have had to wait around 1 year for official lineage and around 8 month for unofficial version...
It will come for the A2, but not today.
And idem, no bloatware in my A2...

same here, I will wait for that day to come... I already unlocked bootloader (not fastboot unlock critical).. my earliest plan is to change to treble rom... but since it's pretty buggy here and there based on the comments that I've read , I canceled my plan and will wait for official pie update,or official custom rom such as lineage, arrow os or resurrection remix to come to our device, I will appreciate it ?

Caping isn't a bloatware, it's a preinstalled app on phones planned to be sold on taiwan market.
It isn't preinstalled in all phones, you can read this in the thread about this.
No need to install a 3rd party launcher, for example I use easyshortcut maker to explore inside my phone.

Look at how much development the mi a1 got tho.
Just a quick question. Isn't there loads of ROMs for this device or why is there a whole section about it named Xiaomi Mi A2 ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other Development ?

Read the thread and you'll find the answer.
In short, no, there are none A2 specific ROMs in that thread and only one custom kernel. Others require you to convert to 6X or are Treble ROMs.
since mi a2 has project treble support, so why not you visit project treble thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble
Before official pie comes to a2, I managed to try pixel experience, aosp extended and arrow os from that thread..

"Mi Services" out of box installed? Do i really have plain Android One?

Hi Guys,
just got my new A2 and i am a bit confused. It has a Mi Services App running for opt in and some other Mi App installed which i cannot uninstall. Do i have the right Android Version? I did an OTA update but that hasn't changed the fact
If i don't want those apps, which Android 9 ROM can you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Mi services are an opt in component. They are used by mi to collect some user experience info so as to improve upon the product.
The other mi app is the mi community app which is like any other forum found in companies like one plus etc. That too can be uninstalled... Other then that, this is pure android.
Trust me, stay on stock as long as you are getting updates.... there's no reason to switch to custom roms so soon

That's why, i can't give you any advice regarding them.

Apart from the brightness bug(you can't go below 19 percent of brightness), I didn't encountered any bug in the stock system.

I'm currently running HAVOC-OS-v3.0 TEN on my Xiaomi MI A2 and really like it. I'd definitely recommend if you're looking to flash a custom ROM.

what about bugs? Everyone is saying differnet things
I heard android 9 havoc has almost no bugs, thats why i was thinking 9
you can disable those apps with adb commands keeping the stock rom (cant remember exactly how but it's definetly possible)
the apps are providing the feedback function (so you can report bugs if you find any) and support for the camera app - which is the miui camera instead of the stock android. (you can always install another camera app and use that instead)

Any custom rom ?

I don't think there will be any support because of your Mediatek processor
Or not

I was looking around to find a ROM to install on my Redmi 9. As stock as possible.
From what I red in this thread, it seems that it's currently impossible ?

Don't expect ROMs anytime soon without source code. Your best bet is a GSI but that's another story for MTK devices and Android 10 complicating matters further with dynamic partitions since the device was launched with Q. I'm interested in seeing someone successful boot a GSI on this device.
