I'm sure this letter has been sent before to LG . Well it was just sent again . - LG G8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi , I was wondering why you choose to keep your bootloaders locked . It really seems like LG doesn't really care about its mobile line . Asus recently sent bootloader unlock and kernel source to developers at XDAdevelopers.com because they know phones that can be rooted and use custom software have HUGE cult followings. And LG ??? You just dont care ? The v350ULM was a great phone . Probably the most underrated device in modern history because you give absolutely no support to developers. At XDAdevelopers that device didnt even have a forum because there was so little support . Now jerryrigeverything on youtube who was breaking down one of your devices finds permanent adhesive under the battery ? Whys that ? So when the battery dies you're forced to buy a new phone ? .
i MEAN HONESTLY YOUR DEVICES ARE SO UNDERRATED . They with proper development have the potential to rival samsung or any other . But it seems like you just dont care about your mobile line . I right now want to buy the v350ULM but why ? I hear it has pretty abysmal battery life . which is probably just a stock app but since this device cant be rooted no one really has the interest in finding out because stock apps cant be removed without root level permission . You want to run the industry ? Why not doing something NO COMPANY IS DOING in2019 and advocate for your customers.
Dream phone . USER REPLACEABLE BATTERY ( most of us are not scuba divers and phones lasted pretty long before sealed ip68 phones. I had my galaxy note 4 since 2012 and just broke it when i dropped it and the screen cracked ) 3.5mm headphone jack ( which you are on top of your audio game ill give you that , which is primarily why I want an LG device.) 5000mAh battery MicroSD support And most important MAKE THE BOOTLOADER UNLOCKABLE AND DISTRIBUTE THE KERNEL SOURCE Make that phone and youd run the industry . Serious . not saying give up the rest of your line . But , youd have a phone with everything everyone wants and no one else is making . You'd have a cult following the likes of the rocky horror picture show in the 80s . I just dont get it . Manufactures seem to in 2019 give the finger to their customers and pretty much say " YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH , YOULL BUY WHAT WE WANT TO MAKE YOU AND YOULL PAY 1000.00 USD FOR IT !!! " Id pay a grand happily for a device I could replace the parts that degrade rapidly . like the battery .. But if not , if you really dont care about us your customers. , why not atleast allow the bootloader to be unlocked and distribute the kernel source ?
The v35 could have been a very cool device . All LG mobile devices could have been so epic . But theyre just ok because of the lack of development support and practical longevity support . Im never going to use a phone as a professional photography device on the surface of earth nor underwater . Most people would agree. How bout making the device practical for everyday life , user improvement via development and not build in 2-3 year obsolescence. I have a junk iphone 6 , I want a new phone really bad . But cant justify patronizing companies that openly subjugate me by built in obsolescence . WE WANT TO BUY YOUR PRODUCTS , help me help you .
I wonder if there will be any response . I wonder if there is what it will be . I wonder why most modern phone manufacturers shun customer feedback and replace device requests with gimmic crap like making a claw with your hand in front of the device and rotating in an awkward manner to adjust the volume .
Thats gimmick CRAP
user replaceable battery and bootloader unlock and kernel source with what you already present and youll have a customer loyalty base the likes of which hasnt been seen since 2012.

Isn't it the carriers that request this? Also they gave up the user replaceable battery for water resistance. The G8 has a feature to reduce charge current to make the battery last longer to try to help with lifespan. They aren't shunning you they stuck with the user-replaceable battery longer than most manufacturers.

Oh, I so, so wish we lived in the world imagined in this letter...
Unlocked bootloaders and shared kernel, yes please! No, it won't revolutionize the industry, but you're absolutely right that the underdogs need to feed the community. It's not Apple money, but it's reliable.
Apple and Samsung rule because their gear doesn't encourage complex thought. It's a tool for ppl who don't want to use it any more than needed. When it comes to computing, we're geeks, nerds, engineers, mechanics, coders, philosophers. Most ppl are not, and will pay big companies to remain so. They're not dumber, they're just focusing on other things. Not everybody needs to rebuild their own tools, or have the time to learn.
Waterproofing and good power management that extends battery life are much more important to me than replaceable battery, and most non-techy ppl would agree. It's a daily tool, it shouldn't die when you drop it in a puddle. I hike a lot and record a lot of wilderness, waterproof cases ruin sensor quality. I'd rather pay pros every 3 years to replace to battery and promise waterproofing. Ideally, it would be a factory program.
Yes, permanent battery glue is wrong, a bad step. Money is killing irreplaceable resources, discouraging Right to Repair is irresponsible, and our descendants will condemn it. It's really sad on so many levels that this is still an issue.
The audio is amazing, the screen is great, but the perceived quality and polish of the iPhone and S10 is cleaner on the showroom floor. It's not fair at all. My G8 is soooo much better on the inside, but most "WOW" consumers won't give it a second glance.
We're approaching the point where consumers will call BS on the 2 year replacement cycle. Manufacturers haven't really fixed screen burn in, and we all know the battery issue. Improving these problems is where LG can drastically change the market; In a couple years, when my friend is replacing their burned-in Samsung, and looks at my LG, if the LG still looks good, my friend will likely give LG a try. If my LG is just as bad, they're going to stick with what they know.
Also, yeah, LG just rolled the mobile division into its larger business, mostly to distract from how much money it lost recently. So, the accusation that LG doesn't care about phones looks to carry a lot of weight. Companies often leave a market at that point. This G8 could soon be a collectible. I hope they unlock the bootloader...

I actually got a response and they wanted my permission and information to run it up the line . Hopefully they listen and use this info .
Yea , there are tweaks to increase batt life . But I like AOSP roms which are pretty much basic stock android running SUPER light . And as I said alot of people arent scuba divers . I had 3 note 4s , note 3 , note 2 . NEVER water damaged them . Most people that want an underwater shot are using a go pro .
Im not saying get rid of sealed phones . Just make a user replaceable battery phone to add to existing lineup .
AND FOR GODSAKE lg unlock the bootloaders and distribute kernel source. Ill buy a v35 thinq and pay a dev a grand just to build this rom and twrp for ME xD

I too is always hoping for LG to change the way they treat their users specially those who love's to tinker their phones.
If they really want to lock down the BL of the US Variants (carriers) they can but not the asian models. If Samsung can why LG can't do that? it's always a question to me why they are doing it. Me as an LG user I already accept the fact that they are slow/late when it comes to updates, but it's okay with me as along as the BL is inlockable. Damn LG.

This is all new built in obsolescence crap . They all used to unlock the BL , but then that and replaceable battery disappeared at virtually the same time. So when the phone gets old youre forced to buy a new one . Which as a tactic mystifies me because if you undid those 2 changes alone as I said youd have a cult following the likes of which havent been seen in modern times . That AND youd also be doing something no one else is doing . so what you lose in planned obsolescence update purchases youd probably double in brand loyalty and sheer sales volume .
I just dont get it . Most people arent scuba steve sticking their phone underwater to film a blue whale while kayaking . If youre that worried about water damage if you talk on your phone in the rain alot get insurance .
Ive water damaged one phone I can remember in my 42 years . a samsung t539 beat because I left it on my roof and it fell off in the road then it started raining and was raining went I went back and found it unrunover . So all this ip68 crap is just cover so we cant replace a failed battery in hopes we wont pay for a replacement battery but a new phone instead .

How are you forced to buy a new one? I watched someone rip the G8 battery out on youtube and you can pay to get it professionally replaced. When I replaced the battery on my G6 it had a pull tab for the battery, but it still bent the battery to hell and it could have exploded in my face. I took it out of the house because I was worried it was unstable. I honestly think it has more to do with amateurs not knowing what they're doing taking the phone apart and then trying to make warranty claims or fears of a law suit from a battery exploding in someone's face. The bootloader is not LG's choice, with the G6 they purposely sold unlockable versions outside of the carrier contracts. You are taking it way too personally, they don't want the battery to move around after 2 years of a phone getting tossed around and they can't exactly screw it into the phone. With batteries getting better and LG's low current charge option there's a good chance this batter could last 3 years. With the higher capacity it won't need to be charged as often either.

I'm not forced I suppose . You are correct . I just pre ordered a Purism Librem 5 linux phone !! Woohooo Bye spy bricks without removable battery !! Ill miss android but i wont miss manufacturers not listening to their consumer base.
Hardware switches for microphone and camera . Modem only connects to the kernel to make calls , User replaceable battery , 3.5mm jack and best of all Native linux operating system by default.
So long android and manufacturers that dont listen to their customer base .

The fact that people are still mad at companies without researching and just... thinking beforehand puzzles me.
Y'all know what you're getting yourself into with buying phones from mainstream manufacturers. It's not news that batteries aren't replaceable, that some variants aren't unlockable, that they're simply trying to get the most profit out of their devices.
Go and buy from a niche-brand if you want everything you listed for a good price. Everyone always praises Oppo and Pocophone or whatever their names are, yet y'all still buy Samsung, Huawei, LG etc and then complain about the most obvious sh*t.
Nothing except for dropping sales will show LG that you're not happy with their business decisions. As if they'd care for a letter in their mailbox written in questionable English... lol

I agree wholly , if all a company cares about is profit and the serfs will chew up whatever they spit out at them without question than far be it from me to complain I guess. I sent the letter , hopefully someone who makes decisions reads it and has a change of heart . If not? No worries.
I from now on won't be subject to built in google spyware , I will type SU in a terminal for root level permissions , I will change my battery myself when the battery goes bad and I will enjoy the old friend that is linux. I did away with windows because of their hijinx in 2011 and never looked back and now Once again linux is that old rock that allows me to escape dwindling freedoms and longevity extension once again .
I was excited when I got my first android device . I thought it was the future due to the fact you didnt have to grovel to install TWRP and custom roms on most devices and it was a linux fork and it was open source but the device manufacturers and the built in spying have just left a bad taste in my mouth . So be it .
Im now awaiting a device with 3 hardware switches
1 for cellular baseband
1 for wifi and blutooth
and
1 for camera and microphone.
And when you switch all 3 off at the same time ? It goes into lockdown mode and disables power to the remaining sensors on the phone .
I wont have the endless sea of apps anymore but honestly its going to be able to play quake II natively and I dont need my phone to be a seismometer .
There are cons to this decision as well but they are far outweighed by the pros .
So long !! Hope to see some dev support and a thriving community for this device when it drops as it is completely open hardware and can install any linux OS devs want to build for it . I'd be happy to be a monetary contributor to that end . Im sure others would be as well .

Fun fact, I just learned why LG did this, the G8 has a lithium polymer batter that should never need to be replaced, by never i mean in the lifespan of the phone.

Lg's phone sales are already abysmal. Which means, not even dropping sales over the years has taught them anything. It's a shame, I really liked LG at one point. I own an op6 and couldn't be happier. By far the best phone I've ever owned. I've had it just over a year and it works like new. I recommend the OP get this phone and be happy.

I really don't understand how the only companies in the us with a unlock phone and an unlock-able boot loader is one plus and motorola and google to be honest these phones aren't even that great but they give customers the ability to customize the phones and to add the functions they need. It is a shame carriers have taken over the smartphone world in the united states we haven't been able to get a right to repair bill thru congress with would at least give us the ability to unlock our bootloaders and repair damage at a cheaper rate put the lastest custom rom on our phone and use the full feature set of the software and hardware on the device we own. I never finance a device and am starting to feel like all these carriers and companies are taking advantage of us. What was the use of getting rid of the two year contract if we can't tinker with our device and customize it even if it means we loose our warranty.

Just to prove your point about customer loyalty...

At the time of this posting, I can buy a used - excellent to very good condition - unlocked LG G8 (only a few months old!) for around $300 on ebay. MSRP is $850. SMH...

Mate you're completely bonkers, what you want from a phone is stuff that most people don't know or care about. Ask a random person on the street what they think of LG's bootloader unlock policy and they'll have no idea what you mean.

For the record, I am never buying a phone that isn't ip68 again since using waterproof samsungs for a couple years. This is MUCH more valuable than an easily removable battery, to me. So stop asking companies to take away waterproofing - most of them don't do it anyway.

Hey if you're in contact with them, let someone know this XDA lurker didn't get the amazing deal of $400 for the G8 on Amazon on black Friday because of no custom ROMs.

staring to feel ripped off.

I'm starting to feel ripped off with how long these upgrades take. I mean when you have phones manufactures posting profits in the millions and billions, yet they wont hire the manpower to get these updates out, it gets old. I have an evo3d, and feel like we should have ICS already. I know when I had a palm pre, at launch, the armchair programmers did more for that phone for free, then palms paid programmers ever did. Thats what I dont understand, if these rom guys can do so much in a couple hours after work, then why can't these paid 8 hour sh%theads get the job done in a reasonable amount of time. Just like my acer 100 tab, when you buy it they say january have ICS, after you've bought it, now its april maybe. Ridiculous. Just venting I suppose, although I feel its a justified vent.
I'm not sure why they don't update things faster either. I guess it's just that a new version of android would confuse the majority of users. idk
Why would android OEMs want to upgrade their old devices? They get their money from selling more phones, if your g1 was officially kicking ICS, why would you want to upgrade? It's sales strategy. If you want updates, go to pretty much any other OS.

This is partly true, this rest is garbage.
Another thing is, people who want upgraded OSs are in the minority. So it just doesn't make since to put resources into stuff people don't care about.
A lot of my friends are still on IOS4.

Are there any programs that will only work on ICS that you absolutely must have?
There's none in my case.
My phone works great, so why do I need the OS updated to the latest?

99% of the time I'd agree with that, but I'm fastidious when it comes to having organised bookmarks. I use Chrome at home and at work and have bookmark syncing enabled. I've used ChromeMarks to access my Chrome bookmarks on my phone, but I've always wanted it to be part of the browser.
Enter, Google Chrome for Android. It does the bookmark syncing.
I literally have ICS on my S2 for that 1 reason. Even with a few bugs and lags every now and then (it's still beta, after all).
I find the people not wanting updates comment as b.s. As for them not wanting to update to sell new phones, I agree with that, but as a consumer it gets tiring having every penny milked from you in one way or another. I buy a new phone outright every year, I have an evo3d, so comparing its update to something like a g1 is ridiculous at best.

^ as stated you're the minority. The majority don't buy phones for updates. Hell most don't know what OS their phone has.

if they dont update it you will be more willing to upgrade your phone sooner. They have nothing to gain from spending time updating there phones when they can slap a slightly better os on a slightly better phone and get you in a new two year contract.

This is the most common candidate for being the main reason. Why make people content with the last Big Thing when you can instead beef up and get them hyped for the next Big Thing?
But then why schedule the Ice Cream upgrade for the SGII just before the SGIII comes out? Beats me. Maybe companies are just schizophrenic. Maybe it's a genius plan to make people fume into wanting the SGIII (people tend not to to change their minds once they've made it up) while ensuring the people who can't afford it still remain happy after six months. Maybe it's just a publicity issue (Samsung needs the positive publicity of coming out with ICS, so they'll eventually need to follow through, but not until the very last moment). Any explanation seems likely to me at this point.
This is why it's generally best to buy a future-proof phone. With the Nexus, for example, you'll be able to get indefinite upgrades from google (even if you have to go through a few hoops). The easier something is to unlock (and I suppose: the more popular it is so that more devs are working on it), the more likely you'll be able to keep your phone upgraded yourself, even if you'll have to go through a few hoops to do so. You can't rely on your manufacturer*, and you definitely can't rely on your carrier to have your best upgrade interests in mind.
Of course, if you get a new phone every year (or even every two years), this isn't so much of an issue for you. Most people probably do this (indeed, the very system encourages them to do this), and so there's little incentive to actually change the system.
*This is supposedly where Apple excels, but at what cost..
I can answer that....
You see, all the armchair programmers have a disclaimer that says "We are not responsible if we break your phone..It may, or may not work as expected and if it blows up your phone it's not our fault"
A huge corporation like Motorola/HTC/Samsung/LG/Nokia/etc have millions of users worldwide with a large set of carriers that all want to tweak the user experience to what that particular carrier wants to standardize on. The phone manufacturer may build what they think is a perfectly reasonable piece of software (ALL software has bugs by the way) only to have it kicked back by the internal quality assurance team because it fails a particular test case. And when you have several dozen/hundred developers working on software it's a coordinated effort to meet internal timelines and goals. And if it passes the internal testing it has to be tested by the carriers who can reject the software build due to bugs/user experience/last minute enhancements which triggers the whole cycle all over again.
Smaller development teams where it's a few people working on code do not have as much overhead and probably don't have as much internal testing processes for all possible corner cases as a huge company does so they can coordinate and release a build much quicker.

As said above, the biggest issues are that Devs here and elsewhere have no responsibilities if the upgrades fail, and secondly, there are a ridiculous number of devices being released. There are about 100 android devices available as current phones, and I don't know how many total. Rather difficult to keep so many up to date. It would be nice if they would scale back how many products are out at once, but manufacturers don't seem to get that yet.

I just dont agree with that, after being with the palm pre from its launch, through all the manual hacks we had to implement before preware, then finally recieving an update months later that couldn't compete with the unofficial code from the guys over at precentral. There is a problem there. I understand there is alot of red tape involved with official releases, but even given that, the time frames are still ridiculous to the point that there is nothing reasonable about it. As awesome as the pre was it was missing basic functions, functions that were there in the code, perhaps they wanted to follow apples model of screwing the customer into the next model, idk. The fact of the matter is, there is no reason why htc or acer or samsung, despite touchwiz and sense and cant push out a nice update in a timely manner, none.

if they dont update it you will be more willing to upgrade your phone sooner. They have nothing to gain from spending time updating there phones when they can slap a slightly better os on a slightly better phone and get you in a new two year contract.

In the UK where contracts (compared with what I've seen in other countries) are actually pretty good value, you get a new phone for free or not very much every time you renew your contract.
After even a year, there are much better phones out there, the phone you have may be a bit scuffed around the corners, battery will be down on capacity.
So most people upgrade when they get a new contract anyway.
It kills me when i read about the supposedly new "jelly bean" that's supposed to be coming out within the year. Seriously? get ICS out on more phones before you even THINK about releasing another update. Who knows the actual reason behind the delays for these updates but someone needs to get on it. When some of the newest phones out right now still don't have ICS or won't for awhile, there's something wrong.
The obvious plan is to push people to buy the newer quad core phones, more contracts, more money, not to mention if there's a premium because they're "quad core" just like then 4G first came out.
the majority of people buy what their salesman makes look good. some chick at the t-mobile store i was in bought some old phone cuz it was a few bucks cheaper than a new phone, which is like twice as fast and will have support at least 6 months longer than the other..

This is true. A while back when I was trying to buy my first smartphone I ended up buying an original Droid just because of the salesman telling me about buy one get one offer, after reading about them, I had found out that this phone was so outdated, luckily I had found out before my 30 days.

[Q] A question about the concept (and reality) concerning 'BATCHES'

Thought this might be worth a thread....
I hear people talk about 'batches' a lot - with several phones now: the lumia 920, gs3, iphone, nexus 4 etc etc. Now I understand that it's just a shipping term, but is there genuinely a sort of continuing programme of improvement or is this some wishful thinking related rubbish that has evolved from forums??
What I'm trying to ask is, are these factories REALLY making tiny improvements every single time in some sort of chivalrous perfectionist crusade or is this all a placebo and/or wishful thinking on the part of the customer? I mean call me a cynic but don't these companies just wait to see what they can get away with?
Obviously during big 'crisis scenarios' (e.g. apple antenna gate) the company in question is forced to make changes/provide solutions but until it gets that big enough or THAT reported in the press, don't these companies just leave it be. I mean after all, wouldn't it make business sense for these companies to just not give a damn about quality control concerning minor things if they thought they could get away with it?
I'm yet to receive my One, but already I hear people saying things like 'yeah there's a gap but it should be sorted in the 2nd batch.' This is similar to stuff I used to hear about the GS3 on XDA concerning battery and also with the lumia 920 and its rattling vibrate. They never are sorted are they?
Just wondering, not trying to anger anyone, I'm just curious. Would love it if someone who has experience in the manufacturing of these devices or knows someone who does could comment.
I don't have answer for the use of the term 'batches', but if the handset is somewhat difficult to assemble, I would assume that the workers would get better at assembling them after doing it X number of times. So, while there's no difference in the components or assembly process, later ones may be assembled more precisely (and the first ones still pass nominal tolerances) due to the improvement in the workers' skill.
AW: [Q] A question about the concept (and reality) concerning 'BATCHES'
First batches which are produced at the very early production progress have a higher chance to be faulty than the later ones .
This doesnt mean that every phone if the first batches are faulty but chances are higher .
For example,my first HTC one had a bad glued speaker grill so it literally fell off .
I told HTC etc and they replaced it without question anything or blaming me that I did something wrong . I knew that the chances were quite high that mine would be flawed but it's still like hitting a jackpot in lotto .
The phone was sent to Taiwan for diagnosis so they can check what the reason was etc .
You can be sure that later devices will be nearly perfect and without flaws as there will be some improvements in the production. The current sold devices are to 99% perfect .
Just have a close look at the device before really using it or buying it in a shop , then you are good to go and enjoy this great device .
Hope that helps you , give me some feedback by pressing the thanks button

Warning for New comers...!

hi. i have had my eyes on this tab S 8.4 LTE since it was announced. i have been saving a lot so as to get this tablet.
the day i got all the money for this tablet saved, i went to the Samsung store and bought the device right. hell, i even paid extra for the Bronze color one.
i felt blessed and happy. after like half an hour of using the tablet, i found the stutter and lag to be all over the UI. it was not deal breaker but definitely was Heart breaker. for a premium one of a kind, Samsung Flagship tablet, i didnt expect that. i have owned Note 3 and both have EXACTLY the same hardware other than the screen.
but i got over that and accepted that as part of deal from samsung cause after all it had Touchwiz. i personally love touchwiz. i really do.
after like a week of usage, i started to feel like the battery on this tab is giving up on me. i tried every thing there was to try. i rooted it, removed the bloatware, installed greenify, swapped roms, minimized brightness and all i was advised by good folks here on this very good community of xda.
then i was told that many people here found the solution by re-sitting the battery connector on the mother board. and i tried that. i removed the back cover, with all the pain and cringing, and REALLY found the plug to be very loose. looked like some child had it just PLACED it on its place. it was not even all the way down. i did that, and boom, i got the battery back to normal, i un-noticed all the scars and scratches there were because of removing the back cover.
after like 4 or 5 days same **** started happening. battery would fail after like 3 hours of screen time and that also doing nothing just plain UI browsing, because my tab was in the period of showing it to friends and relatives. u know the usual stuff. people asking u to let them see your new tab. every body praised and loved the SUPER AMOLED!
after like some time, it literally gave up on me. it would not boot, it would power on. it would charge and that also very weirdly, when i plug it it sometimes said, 50% battery, then at the next second i remove the charger and re-connect it and it would show, 89% battery. the next second i would remove and re-connect the charger and it would say 4% battery.
i could not do anything. so i went to samsung OFFICIALL sales & repair centre and I LITERALLY MADE THAT STUPID ***** WRITE DOWN ON THE JOB SHEET TO NOT LOSE THE IR BLASTER COVER THINGY. they gave me 15 days of time for to repair it and asked for Rs 5000 which is equivalent to US $ 55 approx. i was like, ok if u fix it all well i can pay that. and FYI, the TABLET WAS IN FREAKING WARRANTY! IT WAS ONLY 20 DAYS OLD!
you get where im going? well i called them 15th day and they didnt pick my phone. i tried for next 2 days and they didnt pick any call. i went to their office and asked them what happened of the tablet. they said sorry we could not fix it and we were told this by our ENGINEERS the second day. i was like why didnt u tell me that before why make me wait 15 days and they said our phone was dead... MOTHER****ERS!
i asked them to return my tablet, they charged me Rs 1000 approx US $10 BEFORE returning me the tablet.
when they returned me the tablet, it had that IR blaster cover lost. i was so angry i cant explain. i could not do anything against them i went there 3 times and waited for like 30 min each time JUST TO SEE THE MANAGER AND HE NEVER MET... i wish they all die in deepest pits of hell for eternity. amin.
anyways, firstly i didnt trust the local small repair shops but i had no choice i gave the tab to one of shops and he repaird it for me in like 1 day. i was really happy. but he charged me Rs 3000 about US $30.
i started using the tab and it was fine. i got the normal 6-7 hours of screen on time. and btw, he didnt replace any thing including the batter.
since this saturday, the same **** started happening AGAIN. i went to the same shop and gave him the tablet to repair. just today he called me and told me the expense for this time repair would be Rs 5500 approx US $55.
NOW, this is my experience with samsung's greatest tablet ever. i have learnt my lesson the hard way i guess. Spending US $40 or $60 might not be a big deal for some of you Europeans or Americans out there but im from Pakistan. im a student. i dont get money very often to repair my ****. and that also a mere 28 days old BRAND NEW OUT OF THE ****ING BOX TABLET.
i know, i might get hate here as well, cause not many these days, understand others problems.
but i would advise you all new comers NOT TO GET THIS TABLET EVEN IF U ARE GETTING IT VIA SALE. i paid the full price and even more cause of import fees and taxes.
and btw, its not just me, there are many people who didnt get the battery life they were told they would get.
you have been warned.
Why didn't you get a replacement by warranty? Didn't get that.

HAHA... replacement? there is no such thing as replacement here mate! they only talk to the customers until they pay them and thats it. after that they dont have any time for you. as i have already said, they were not even ready to return me my device which they had ****ed up by losing the IR blaster cover. they said first i need to pay then they will return my tab. its been one of the ****ed up experiences of my life.
and to top things off, no one is there to complain. no executives, no senior person, no managers NOTHING! only sales girls with fake smiles and little cleavages. u see, women here, especially women who work in such sales department, like all over the world are used very wrongly. and in our country you can not even look at a woman with anger, let alone talk to them about the **** they did wrong to my tablet.
its very very saddening situation here man, very very saddening! people who have resources get everything and students like myself or people who have not much relations are the victims. i know if i were in any other country i could have sued their asses off. but here NO.
and its the device its self thats the problem. u see if samsung cuts its product lines even 25%, and works more on QC and software, things like thing would never happen.
all the hype around S6 and i bet you, it will all be the same. I bet you it will still lag, it will have almost the same issues as previous phones. yes there will be changes, but merely cosmetic!
Reality bites

Unfortunately, most of the stores in some countries are only third party/franchisee, so they don't offer the same wonderful customer service you may be accustomed to. They don't readily provide brand new unit replacements, heck, we usually even have to fight for parts replacement and settle at that (better than nothing, I guess).
From where I'm from, we're usually told, "we will have to have our technician take a look at it. Please come back after 5-7 business days." When we come back, they tell us that they were unable to elicit the problem, and if we want, they can have it sent to their main branch (in a different city) to take a look at it. Of course, they still end up telling you that there's nothing wrong with it and charge you anyway.

Thank you for this post. I actually considered getting the Tab S2 when it comes out. Your post reminded me of my past experience with a Galaxy Tab 8.9 and an S3 (tablet had a defective motherboard and I could only get the parts replaced, no new unit) and my Galaxy S3 wouldn't connect to a WiFi network unless I literally stood right next to the router (this one I actually did manage to get a replacement unit, but the trouble I had to go through..ugh).
Anyway, I'm so sorry for the trouble you had to go through.
Sorry but just because you had an bad experience it doesn't mean that others should be scared off. I bought my tab 's 8.4 on sale and I use it at least 4-5 hours per day without any lag at all and with around 35% battery left every day. I think you could just have said that you had a bad experience instead of telling everybody in bolded text that they shouldn't get it.
Except I have WiFi version. So if this is a common problem on the late version then I have nothing to say.

I agree - I have the 10.5 and yes it suffers from slight lag but theres ways around that (Nova/debloating etc).
My note 4 is the boss and not issues at all now i'm on 5.0.1. You can't really slat a manufacturer entirely if the country you reside in doesn't have the support required - you took that risk on.
As for the technical problems you are having, I guess taking apart a device that was under a month old kind of invalidates any warranty - if you didn't have one I suspect all you've done is cause problems for the engineers. Did you contact the sellers/retailer? Have you contacted samsung to see who they'd recommend/are there others that may be able to sort it out?
However if you cannot get Samsung repair service in your area, why didn't you consider a make that can be supported locally?
I imported a gear VR from the US to UK and if it went wrong I'd wholly expect Samsung not to honour the warranty....sometimes we take risks and it doesn't work out!
Well no doubt you had a nightmare experience and sorry that you didn't have my experience. For me I couldn't be happier and have zero regrets with my purchase. Other then the lag problem which was fixed by debloating and switching to nova launcher I really really really love my tab s and so glad I didn't get the iPad mini like I was planning.
Now I eagerly await the lollipop update.
Sucks that you can't get proper service. Sorry to hear that but a lot of us can get proper service so I don't think its right for you to tell people to stay away. If someone gets unlucky here where I am they can easily return it and get a new one. For me I was first disappointed by the battery life but have quickly realized maybe I was spoiled by the 10+ hours my ipad 3 got. I don't experience any lag and have mostly good things to say about the device. I do wish the battery would go a bit longer. My only complaint comes with the power button. After only a few weeks its not looking good. Its going to go at some point. It already looks like its pushed in.
I have a 10 as well, and I have had zero issues with it. I have read some other complaint threads, but I haven't had any issues at all with mine. Sucks to hear others have issues, but this is the finest tablet I have ever owned.

both of you are very right at your position. i might have also said the same things if i saw some thread like this and i had no trouble with my tablet.
but the thing is, samsung has Proper sales and service business here in my country. u would not even believe that some of the products are not even launched in some big countries but they are made available here. Note 4 was launched here 2 days before its international launch! same case with some other big tabs and smartphones.
removing the back cover does not void ANY kind of warranty. i snapped it back and no body could tell if i ever removed it. i dont have the tab with me, but when i will i will try to show you guys what the OFFICIAL samsung ENGINEERS did to it. i opened the back with a debit card and nails and they have proper equipment, i guess, but they ruined it for me. and how come they lose some part of the tab when i CLEARLY TOLD THEM & EVEN ROTE IT TO THEM NOT TO LOSE IT because its too small thing to lose.
any how, all of you guys who have no trouble with your tabs, great for you. i feel good for you. i would have called it my bad luck if it was my first experience with samsung device. i have had sasmsung devices for a very long time including even some of the house hold electronics. mobile division of samsung sucks balls in terms of QC.i remember having S2 having dead speaker after 2 months, S3 having strange glue marks on the AMOLED screen, S4 having heat up issues and now this.
@ Pills_e and i didn't write text in bold or what ever to seek attention. why didnt you write such a thread? because you didnt have a problem right? i just tried to warn people. i have said it already and would say it again, im a student. i dont have a full time job. its Very hard for me to spend US $40 or $60 after 10 days just like that on repairing a gadget that is not even available to me. it might be easy for you, but not for all.
i just advised based on my experience and its just sincere brotherly advise to all new comers. people will get what they like, no matter what. i just poured in my experience. thats it.

I'm so sorry for you. I hate that you've been through all of this stuff regarding samsung devices. I wonder if the tabs going to Pakistan are made in a different factory than United States ones? I hope you have better luck in the future.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 with much love to the xda community.
I have the 10.5 and am on a stock rom and have zero lag anywhere. Initially there was lag with the OS it was released with (I bought it release day) but subsequent updates removed all the lag I had. I love my Tab S and I get 11hrs watching videos on it on long flights and drives and the screen is amazing.
What you should have done was try to return the tablet for a replacement INSTEAD of opening the back. Opening the back voided your warranty and is not something I EVER do for ANY device I own that's within warranty period. Outside of the period I may take the chance but not a day before.
Sorry to hear this happened to you as I know how frustrating these kinds of things can be.
I'm Surprised!
I'm surprised that Samsung would even touch your Tab S 8.4! After you rooted it, changed the ROM and then opened the device up which a user is never supposed to do, I'm surprised your warranty is worth the paper it was written on.
You should have taken the Tab S back to whomever you bought it and got your money back.
Hmmmm... was just about to order a tab S 8.4 WiFi as well... Lol.
i have 10.5 LTE and the battery stand only 3.5 Hours after few month of purchase its stand around 6 hours before
i have already make root so i got KNOX flag 01
but i will pay 50$ if this will fix the problem but after i read your story im afraid to fix it and the problem come again .. i don't know what to do

Community needs to wake up, Seriously!

hi.im a loyal Samsung customer. i love their innovations, their experimentation, their ideas!
i love Note series, since Note 1, i never got anyother daily driver phone. it was always Note! the refined version of their S line.
Everybody knows how samsung treated Note 4. it is left like it is not even one of their own.
im not living in Europe or USA or Canada, where u can get subsidy from carriers and get a new phone and pay the rest monthly.
i have to get the cash, get it for almost 40% higher price than its price, or get it imported . i got mine imported.
Yesterday my Note 4 screen gave up on me. the left side of the display flickered and glitched out on its own for NO reason at all! i didnt drop it, i didnt put weight on it, it didnt get wet, NOTHING! all on its own, and mind u its only 20 days old phone.
its under warranty but i cant claim it cause i got it from UK and now i cant go back or send it back cause that would take time and lots of money especially when, if fixed, it comes back.
now i gave it for repair but they didnt satisfy me and said that these issues were common with S5 and onward phones from samsung. risk is higher cause it can be LCD issue which will cost me around $200, where i got this phone for $550
i had a Tab S8.4 this January, that had TERRIBLE battery issue, and after that motherboard died and i had to sell in for parts!
now all these stories and whats the outcome?
well i see many people here saying that looking at support from samsung for note 4 , they will not be getting any more samsung device, and blah blah.... then how come samsung sell millions of newer releases especially in European countries and USA? i mean, majority of their sales are in these areas right?
its sad, how **** their QC has gone, and even software support is ****! everyone knows they will not release 5.1 for international models until after Note 5 comes out.
Note 4 was supposed to be DAWN of new design language for samsung especially for their Flagships, but where is that philosophy now?
im not trying to be that mean dude, but it hurts when u spend ur hard earned money, u wait for a device u love, u get that and after 20 days u find its screen glitch out for no ****ING reason!
this is second time within few months, samsung betrayed me.
and its not just me, no major update in almost a year is bad from samsung.
so all who are saying they will not get Note 5 for lack of SD card slot, or removable battery, PLS STICK TO YOUR WORDS!
they have really really turned themselves like apple. samsung is the new apple now... but atleast, Apple knows a thing or two about QC and Software support. because without software support these phones are nothing more than a piece of hardware!
Unnecessary thread is unnecessary.

hi.im a loyal Samsung customer. i love their innovations, their experimentation, their ideas!
i love Note series, since Note 1, i never got anyother daily driver phone. it was always Note! the refined version of their S line.

Why buy an imported version? Imports always have their risks no matter the brand. A screen replacement is always expensive due to the high costs of the amoled display (oem displays are always much more expensive than their knockoffs). Did you try calling a samsung service center for help? Sometimes they honor the warranty even if it is an import. If not then just send it back to the store you bought it from (should be cheaper than replacing the screen).

i knew i would get such comments and even hate for this. its not a personal matter.
i would eventually get my issue fixed, that not the problem. the problem is Samsung's behavior to its customers.
its us buying their products and when people find unnecessary issues and lack of support from company, we rage like hell. but then at the end we go and buy another one of their over priced product and the cycle keeps going on and on....
the reason of this thread is not to bash samsung or to bash its customers in anyway. i myself like samsung but not anymore and thats because of no one else but samsung themselves.
its only US, customers who can fix lot of issues.
im sure many here would understand my point, sad you didn't

Look it's not that I don't understand your point, it's the fact that your thread number 500 on this subject. I've already said I'm not buying another Samsung product.. I love my note 4 but have grown to dislike the lack of updates and most definitely the lack of open source on the TW side of things.
This is what happens when you take risks for granted. That extra 40% for a local version probably doesn't seem so bad now. You should consider an import as a no warranty device, not to mention you rooting it as well. I don't think I would purchase any kind of device today for $550 without some kind of warranty, unless I had 100% certainty the device would not fail.
I knew the risk when I bought my Note 4 and rooted it the second I brought it home. That was a $700 risk I was willing to accept with nobody else to blame but myself. (Of course I used the ol' amex warranty safety net, I am not totally reckless)
Conclusion: Suck it up, move on, and hopefully learn something from the experience.
I'm with you. The Note 4 amazed me when I got it, but the Lollipop update and amazingly long delays in fixing the issues, seeing all Samsungs old, ****ty models getting 5.1.1 before their newest most expensive flagship phone really soured me off the experience. With the Note 5 looking total ****, it seems like there's no real reason to stay with Samsung. Great hardware (except the Note 5), but their support and software are ****.
I totaly agree with you and I will not buy any Samsung phone/product in the future. I have Note 4 and Tab S and on Note 4 I had to lose warranty and root it to get the ROM that is working to some point and on Tab S I have stock and it is HORRIBLE! Gr8 piece of HW with crappy SW = not worth it! Thx to this incompetent Samsung like engeniers Apple is still on top thx to good support and great SW with lesser HW.

see! i told you guys! samsung says no Note 5 for Europe and also just look at what they made us wait for our Note 4 5.1, this ****ty fingerprint magnet Note 5.
what are the upgrades? NOTHING!

Samsung's failure

The note 7. What a failure for Samsung. Economically and their reputation. But who's really to blame. Battery manufactures are spotty at best for any electronics manufacture. Its just how that gamble works in the battery game. There are no real reliable sources. That's why there are most likely 6 18650 battery cells in your older laptop, made by Sony, Samsung, or LG. Each cell is 4.2 volts when fully charged. Wired in series, this equals 25.2 volts. Each cell has a minimum of 3 volts, or 18 volts in series. Which means your battery pack can operate from roughly 18-25volts. Your charger is a 19 volt charger. Meaning when they designed your laptop, they did so keeping in mind on average of 1 out of 6 of your cells has had a manufacturing catastrophic failure. But the battery pack will still work. Why do you think they die so fast and their capacities diminish? Now Samsung releases millions of cell phones with non-removable battery covers, forcing users to purchase new phones instead of batteries, it's like they where asking for a 19 billion dollar loss, because they can't point fingers at anyone but themselves, knowing the battery market is as it is today. I don't feel sorry for them for going cheap and trying to copy apple. We are fortunate we didn't see this happen sooner, although we all take today's technologies for granted and expect miracles from countries that cannot keep up to our capitalist demand, like legitimate batteries.
Thing is Samsung isn't the first to do sealed in batteries and this isnt their first phone with a sealed in battery (see S6, S6edge, S6edge+, Note5, S7. S7edge). Making the statement that they were asking for it by sealing in batteries is an over simplification when you consider all the phones that have sealed batteries and all the tablets that have always had sealed batteries.
Also what does it have to do with "keeping up with our capitalist demands". South Korea where Samsung is based is in fact a capitalist country, maybe you are mistaking it for socialist state like North Korea.
If anything it is a failure of QA on their end (opting to test everything in house, which is likely to cut cost).
I don't see a reliable way of waterproofing with a removable battery. The construction of the Sim tray with a water leak sticker right below it is a dead give away.
Half the people couldn't even click all the back fasteners on a phone anyways.

Hey guy. Whats the intelligence behind sealed back covers. Profit. So when your battery goes out, you have to replace the phone not the battery. Defend samsung some more, South korea is currently suing samsung. Samsung Made this stupid decision. They could have pointed the finger at the battery manufacture and avoided the whole thing. But they had to seal it, resulting in a 19 billion dollar loss.
I don't care if it's the first, or last phone with a sealed battery cover, NONE of them should have it. Period.

The S5 was water resistant and has a removable battery.
Its 3 generation's old now so I would think the technology has gotten better since then as well

Thanks for not addressing every other phone with a sealed battery. Your point is already flawed.
And if you think every decision made about a device isn't based around return on investment then you are lost.
You guys come in armchair quarterbacking this and cant think outside of a pretty small box to even have a logical discussion.
Also love profound statement of Company X did this to save money/profit, what a company did something in an attempt to make money?!
Lol defend samsung? Did you not see my last statement about how they screwed up by using internal QA or is your confirmation bais not allowing you to acknowledge that?

If you read his post fully it says he doesnt see a reliable way of water proofing. Thing is the s5 had its fair share of unhappy users that utilized the water resistance only to realize they didn't secure one of the covers completely or the back wasnt fully closed. Then since water resistance doesnt negate water damage as a no no for insurance claims you had a lot of unhappy customers.
That being said you can't really think the resistance to ingress of moisture is better on the s5 than it is on s7.
The technology did improve, do you remember the design sacrifices for water proofing an s5? Physical buttons, port covers, what good is that in the event of an accident unless you always have them plugged.
Im not saying samsung is perfect but lets at least be objective when we discuss this.

Unreliable due to user error does not count, unreliable due to poor design and engineering is a different matter entirely.
Yes the ports all being covered was not exactly user friendly thats for sure.
And no of course I certainly would not expect the S5 to be better in regards to water resistance or anything else for tbat matter lol

As an engineer we are taught to design for everything, including user error. An easy and repeated user error is called an engineering design flaw.
I am reminded of a tooth paste tube story where they changed the cap to be the pop off type instead of the screw off type. this is of course a better design as the pop top stays on the tube and is quicker than having to screw and unscrew the top each time. But consumers complained about a broken cap because they couldn't unscrew it. The designers did not say "stupid consumers" they said "bad design"
Not saying this is best for society, it limits progression, but its just the reality.

I beleive the layman's term is idiot proofing. Which from my experience is impossible as there is always one idiot who can find way to screw up even the best design or instructions lol

Now it looks like Samsung will have to defend itself. There being sued for this by the South Korean people. Look at the end of the day, I don't work for any of them so I don't really give a damn. I'm just talking out of my a$$ to rant sorry. You can delete this thread if you want.

I think they should be sued. I will bet you money you will see a full influx of leaks for the s8 and all the hype and promotions will have everyone forget this mess even happened.
I have never been tied to one brand but Samsung solely because of the Note line has seen the most action for me. This go around I am ditching sammy for the Pixel. I can't act like coming from a Note 7 it doesnt feel like a downgrade but most phones on the market do at this point.

You know what's really bad? Besides the fact we are no longer seeing note 7 fires and from the ones that were officially found to be fraudulent or media bull****...i guarantee the note 8 will have people claiming their note 8 catches on fire when that comes out. I promise you there will be and I wouldn't be surprised if that's immediately cancelled without even bothering to realize people fake **** and possibly, though I doubt it, people and companies sabotage other companies.
Point is there defenantly was a design defect and Samsung screwed up but it is strange we aren't hearing about it anymore and I am genuinely concerned about the note 8 and bogus claims.

Guys uninstall the old package pro and download version 6.3 from this website. They disable the urgentfwupdate from version 6.6 which will allow samsung to send updates to our phones.
