Google photos issue after update - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

Hello All,
I have recently bought a global version of MI 9 and everything was fine until one of the updates that I got.
1. I got the MIUI update with the June security patch (Android Version - 9 PKQ1.181121.001, MIUI version - MIUI GLOBAL VERSION 10.2.13 STABLE 10.2.13.0 (PFAMIXM))
2. Google photos shows as last updated on the same day (4.21.0.258856319)
Everything else is fine, but after I open Google Photos and open any photo, the photo just dims. Is hard to explain and hence attaching the video for details. Any ideas ??
Video can be found here - https://photos.app.goo.gl/vBvLXTAQXBiADV7j7

Uninstall Google photo update and check if the problem stay.
My Google photo version is 4.20 updated on 18 July.

I have the exact same issue on Mi 9 Global.
Downgraded Google Photos to 4.15.0.245117517 and the dimming issue when opening a photo went away.

Found the same problem with eu rom, downgrade to be Google Photos 4.17.0.249919200 is also good.
Need to wait until newer Google Photos version before trying again.

In display setttings/contrast use normal, adaptive and boost cause the dimming effect

It's not that issue. I've got the same since the last update and haven't touched anything. Apparently Google screwed up and thank God it's not only me.

Download the latest gphotos and disable any contrast settings and dimming does not accur

Issue is caused from Google Photo's app, not from build.

Just got 4.21 version of Google photo and the issue start like yours,so i decided to change the colors mode in display setting to standard and it seems to fix it somehow but not like as before, still little dimming or contrast adjustment happening.

I have unistalled updates in app settings, then update from playstore and now is ok

Using standard display will made screen look like washed out and not rich colors.

Removing the update + reinstalling fixed it.

True

I don't use Google photos but I do recall seeing people complain about this on another forum and a different phone... So looks like it's a bug in Google photos not miui.

It's due Google Photos now support Wide Color Gamut including P3 color mode, other android app just support sRGB. Therefore Google Photos can now differentiate more colors than before which is good, but our android versions don't support it now. It works flawlessly in Pixel phones but causing Yellowish/Green tint or dimming or contrasty in others. Don't worry GPhotos may roll back this update temporarilyhttps://www.xda-developers.com/google-photos-wide-color-image-support-buggy-photo-viewer/

google cam 4.4 with hdr+ crashing

hi,
my mother, aunt and uncle all use the redmi 4x. I installed xiaomi.eu 9.1.2.0 on my mother phone + magisk + api module and gcam 4.4 hdr+. everything works. stock cam, gcam.
my aunt saw the photos and wanted the same so I did. everything the same, works aswell.
now my uncle wanted the same and I installed but with newer version 9.2.1.0. stock cam crashes. gcam crashes aswell. without api stock cam works.
now I updated my mother to 9.2.1.0 too, stock cam stopped working but gcam still works. so how I get the gcam to work on my uncles phone??
thanks in advance
Stock camera stopped beign compatible with camera2api since 7.12.28 update, so every new update has this problem including the latest global stable. Till now the only way to fix this is installing modded miui camera or rollback to miui 7.12.21 or a previous version. For gcam, I'm not sure why it doesn't work in one of your phones, but try this one with manual focus, you can take photos with portrait mode in front camera too.
In fact I was in oreo, but decided to give another try to miui, since oreo still has a annoying bug with multitouch even now that it's pretty much stable. So now I have miui.am. not the official miui. But I can confirm that both cameras work. Only problem for me is that miui camera has less options for some reason, I still need to test. And in gcam everything work just fine, I can use all the options like camcorder, face retouch and portrait mode in front camera without any crash or need to change settings, like before in oreo. Only problem is that you still need to set the iso manually.
Give it a try if you want, this is the modded miui camera: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74893764&postcount=1431
A mirror of the gcam with manual focus, because they deleted the original link: https://mega.nz/#!H5UgUKBZ!wBsXz5fbpPRREooq5-WcNsd0Tdfkit-yQcyOapMo464
And I will attach my settings. Also if you don't mind to much about miui, you can install latest unofficial RR luis build, it has already miui and google camera, and both work fine.
To use portrait mode in front camera, you need to adjust the iso with the left scroll to any value between 800 and 3200. Just don't let it on auto.

mine uncle got it to work but with nexus 6p settings, your settings gives him a black screen. do you have a autofokus version? no auto fokus in videos is noticable.
I have the same version that I posted to you, from the mega link. Tbh I'm not sure what makes some version work on certain roms, while in other doesn't. Im using clarity kernel, but if I'm not mistaken it worked also on stock kernel. On miui eu it worked fine for me too

thats weird that I have 0 problems on my mothers phone but uncle got always 1 problem. I can use your config on my mother and it works. on uncle it's black screen. then he can use camera with nexus 6p config but then front cam not working. I think I read that many xiaomi phones got diferrent displays / fingerscanner / cams etc.

Yeah, that may be the cause. It's common to see the same redmi 4x with different hardware like screen type, fingerprint sensor and even the led, some has only white led when others have full rgb led like mine.
Anyway, check here. There is a lot of gcam's versions. With some luck, one of them will work on your uncle's phone.

Yeah, unfortunately it didn't work well for me too. I tried to see if arnovaG82 would fix it, but seems like not. So righ now I'm on Multipro 7.12.14 build, with little but nice customization, but more important both cameras work fine.
This modded camera seems like it doesn't work well on miui roms for some reason. I tried it on newest and some old miui builds, and neither worked fine. I'm not sure why, I can remember that it worked before. Now only if I flash it on a custom rom it work fine.

Huawei P20 Pro Google Photos crashing issue

Preordered my p20 pro and was very excited. It's been an amazing phone. However, my default photo gallery has always been google photos, I have so many photos stored in the cloud through Google Photos. But the app on my p20 pro seems to not work, it constantly crashes. I've tried everything to fix it to my knowledge but nothing is working. After about 10 seconds it just crashes. I thought it was initially struggling when it said "getting photos" so I removed my google account, but the app still crashed!
Really frustrating, open to any suggestions and please let me know if you have the same issues, hopefully I'm not alone.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! Mine works and loads, but swiping between photos is quite jittery...even though it was silky smooth on my old phone! Really disappointing software optimisation for a new phone

Working fine here
All good for me too, finding it strange that some people are having issues that others don't have. It's smooth and fast loading for me just like Google maps, another app people are having trouble with.
I'm having trouble with Google maps
1.07 solves the maps issue. My photos working great.
It's pretty frustrating that we don't know when these updates will actually be live to every user...I haven't had any updates and am thinking of returning in my returns window just incase nothing comes through... Pretty frustrating!
I have no issue with Google Photos. It sync between my pixel 2 and p20 pro nicely. App performance is good with no crash as well.
I only had maps issue on .106 but .107 fixed it.

It's like that with pretty muchevery phone bar pixel and OnePlus. Always dependant on the network/carrier for them to get a move on and release the updates.
I'm still on the first firmware with Three but then again I don't really care so much as I am having none of the issues with Maps or Google Photos etc.
I had a sync issue with Chrome but I fixed it with a factory reset.

Try turning off the smart resolution option and see if that resolved crashing or freezing issues. Then refresh the resolution by switching back and forth once to the one you want ... This fixed Google maps for me
For me it doesn't crash but switching between photos is always a little laggy. If I go to the playstore and uninstall the google photos updates the lag is gone. So for me it is working fine with an older version but not with the current one. A friend of mine has the exact same issue. We were both on .106 (dual sim) and now on .107.

Still not working for me! Any other fixes for Google photos... Is there a way to get this reported properly?
Its look like its not the good cpu witch is used that why.. i dont find any fix. (i dont use this software...)
I get that it says to connect my charger to sync my photos. And when I do it still doesn't sync.
The thing is that the option for choosing sync when charging or not charging is gone from the app. And I want it to always sync, not only when charging!

Can anyone please tell me what's the difference between the current ( EMUI 9.1) camera version and this one? Does it offer 50x zo etc?
Only 10x zoom max with last fw. Apparently they only let the same camera do 30x zoom on the Mate 20 series. Probably artificial limitation to make the newer phone more appealing...
Someone knows what's more in the version 9.1.0.319 and 9.1.0.323
I'm in 9.1.328 os version and I have the 318 camera version.
Sent from my CLT-L29 using Tapatalk
Need to tell you all I`ve got CLT-L29 with 9.1.0.328 - and the camera got Terrible! Night-mode is atrocious, and day-time shooting worsened. Night mode now makes flat, ugly, no-life-basic photos (doesn`t matter if vivid or whatever colour mode is used), day-time pictures are dark, with worse dynamic range then before. I tried everything to go back to previous version - not possible in my experience. If anyone succeeded in downgrading the camera app version, or installing an older one, PLEASE let me know how. My phone is not rooted - cant find a way to unlock the bootloader. (I read about a possible way with disassembling the phone, but I wouldn`t do that to it).
Cheers,
P.S. - If you have a P20 Pro with older android version - do not update! - it will destroy your camera (basically the only thing you bought the phone for).
I have no issue with 328 firmware emui 9.1 and the cam, how I am in 345 firmware with a new version of camera app, working fine, you can make a factory reset or simply reset the camera app settings

You haven`t noticed. They made it gradually worse - with 8.1 it was so much better in regards of color depth, dynamic range, contrast setting, night mode contrast, light sensitivity - everything, by the time they made 9.1... it is nothing of the kind. BTW this issue is noted, A1 representative I spoke to, said Huawei were "aware" of the night-mode problem, and "wold fix it" in the next generation of updates. But I as a very keen photo-maniac, who bought this phone precisely for the camera, noticed it getting worse by every update, so I don`t truly believe they will fix it. When with 8.1 p20pro was hands down the low-light monster and had outstanding color depth, which the p30pro couldn`t reach because it lacks the monochrome camera (same goes for the nigh-mode). So even if they do something about the night-mode in future updates, for it would be made so that the camera will be smudged to produce p30pro-like (but blurrier) photos.
Otherwise - I made factory reset, probably 10 times since then, even found a way to delete the camera app with adb run tool, installed the latest version from apk-mirror - still the same (of course). Then I factory reset the phone again and again and again...
So please, when citing me, please cite me only if you found a way to answer my query and you personally managed to install a workingly-run 8.1 camera version, please. Thank you so much for your understanding and willingness to help!
Cheers!
My camera is ok too. I use night mode even during the day, sometimes, for the dramatic effect.

Interesting. What is your p20p model: C432 or C7..?
I answer you in the right way with the typical issues with the software and the cam, I don't care how many times you made factory reset, I see improvements in the cam with emui9.1, maybe your cam or phone is damage, or whatever,

Snapchat story problems

Hi, haven't seen anyone posted regarding Snapchat issues, it's been persistent for me regardless of versions of Snapchat or developers miui/global miui.
Basically, people can't see my snap stories that I record with snap. They'll click on it and it'll close immediately without a chance of looking at it. Doesn't happen if I post a picture from camera roll taken from the miui camera/screenshots,etc.
Anybody running into the same issue? I've messed with the notch hide/full screen settings too with no luck.
We're you ever able to solve the problem?
I also had this issue last week, and it seems to be a recurrent problem atm. I saw two people reporting the same problem : Link 1 | Link 2 (in french sorry)
I guess we'll have to wait for a snapchat or MIUI update to fix this problem :/ The best we can do for now is report it in the MIUI forum
Edit : I reported it here. If you don't mind you could upvote it and / or reply to confirm so the issue maybe gets more visibility :fingers-crossed:
Can someone who's running the global stable ROM please confirm this issue and post it on Mi Community ? Because, as you can see in my post on the forum, the user from the feedback team replying doesn't believe me as long as I don't switch to global stable myself..
No fix that I was able so far BY MYSELFFFFF. Took everyone worldwide long enough to realize there was an issue.
At the moment I believe it's only iphone that can't see snap videos, androids seem to be fine. 50/50 on if they can see videos from camera roll recorded with something else ( can't determine when they can/can't see it) Last I heard they were not able to see videos with the stock camera app, perhaps they can see video recorded with gcam/instagram(can't confirm). The iphone person reinstalling their snapchat app may or may not allow them to see your snap video (once again, can't confirm)
They said they saw my snap after reinstalling because I asked them to, but I can't recall if it was a snap video vs picture vs camera roll video.
I have tried using many old versions of snap, , latest version, beta versions of snap.
I have tried using the last available developer rom and the last global stable rom.
I've toggled with fullscreen/notch support because I noticed the camera view kind of stutters for a split sec when you start recording and changes to fullscreen or something like that.
Hi , i used to have the same problem , but i fix it by flashing Revolution OS 9.9.21 , here is your guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/Mi-9/how-to/xiaomi-mi-9-firmware-twrp-recovery-root-t3922158

Question Rear display not showing notifications

Hello guys,
I have an issue with the notifications not being displayed on the rear display of the phone.
I have them enabled and they work perfectly fine otherwise on the main screen.
Anyone else has this issue or knows what needs to be done in order for these to work on the rear screen ( other than enabling them from the rear display menu )?
I'm running the latest china rom 12.0.10
Thanks !
Factory reset ?
MINE ALSO....
my rear display won't pop up/light up notification when theres msg
Will wait until 12.5 to do any factory rest, really not interested on loosing all my setup because of this.
Moreover, there is a thread for the similar issue on the xiaomi.eu forum of the mi 11 ultra. the reporter there already did a factory reset without success .
Maybe future updates will fix this.

Its a software bug. Wait update.
After the OTA 12.5 update the notifications still doesn't work..
Did someone managed to get them to work ( where it didn't worked at all out of the box ) ?
Thanks !

Was there any increased functionality in the rear camera view finder in 12.5 ?
It was exactly the same app version with the same functionalities...
@speedtripler , you flashed the stable xiaomi.eu ROM ?
Are the rear display notifications working on your side ?
I use the corporate outlook client and the last time i used xiaomi.eu on my mi9, outlook didn't want to work with my corporate account any longer...
I don't generally use the rear panel, update 12.5.2 didn't add any new functionality to the rear screen that I have noticed but I haven't tested extensively
You still can't use it in portrait mode or to record videos which is still disappointing and it still has a 10-15-30 second timeout as far as I can tell
Did anyone manage to fix the rear display notification issue?
I tried in eu rom its working but don't know whats wrong un china rom
Nope. Sometimes, mine show WhatsApp messages for 3-4 seconds. But most of the time.. nothing. Threema messages dont show at all.
I also facing the issue, that Settings->Special Features->Rear Display->Use rear Display disable itself.
Very annoying for such an expensive phone. MIUI EU 12.5.7 - Rear Display Version 1.3.3
I got the same problem, keeps disabling by itself and notifications do no show up
I was actually talking about the main display lock screen but yeah also rear one doesn't work, so nobody knows a fix?

It's a simple step
It doesn't work...trust me i tried it the first time...
Heck i even gave permission to xiaomi framework google services etc...restarted phone, uninstalled app updates, reset data...nothing works
I assume there is some sort of privacy option enabled on the CN ROM that is different to xiaomi.eu or GLOBAL/EEA roms and it gets activated when the region is set other than China or some other region
I'm set to Romania/EU, some other people from EU don't have issues.
Maibe is somehow related, don't know.
Good luck!
Mine is genuine EU model with original EU Rom and rear notifications don't work as well, only received phone calls (all permissions granted).
The rear screen only turns on, showing time, date and battery as usual, nothing else (no red dot).
But I use third party SMS and email apps, maybe only stock apps are monitored...
From the videos i saw , a lot of third party apps like WhatsApp are supported.
I'm using the stock messaging app dialer etc.
I do get phone calls popping up, that i can reject / accept and i can use it for rear camera selfies etc.
Other than the notifications ( red dot ) everything else works
Apparently notifications from these third party apps of mine are not supported:
K9 mail
QKSMS+
Jorte
Home alarm app
Home banking apps
