SM-T818V USB will only charge - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a Verizon Tab S2 9.7 that seems to be having a major USB malfunction... No matter what USB setting I use (mtp, ptp, randis, midi, ext) when i plug in my device to a computer (i have tried 3 diff comps) the computer will not even register anything connected to it. the device will charge no problem but no matter what drivers i have installed or what cable i use it will not show up. It also does not show anything in download (odin) mode, or recovery so i can not even re-flash the stock firmware to try to fix it that way. i asked Verizon if they could get me an update.zip of their latest firmware ota update and was told there was nothing they could do. So I am left in a bind as if anything goes wrong with the tablet other than not being able to transfer files, there is nothing i can do to repair it. It has never been rooted and is on the latest firmware release for its model with a locked bootloader. Im not sure what to do or what my next step should be. I am attempting to root it using kingroot but no luck as i expected. thought it would be a lot easier to fix with root but with the locked bootloader im out of options. Any help is appreciated as this is my main tablet which i use for everything. thank you in advance.

Unroot possible with no USB Connection?

Is it possible to unroot your phone without your usb connection working anymore? I plug my phone into my computer which is running Windows XP Media Center edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 and it says USB Device not recognized. I tried to manually update the driver in the device manager but it tells me that the specified location does not contain information about your hardware and I verified that they are the drivers for my hero. I even tried a new cable to eliminate that as a problem but I still have the same issues. To give it one last try I plugged it into my laptop Running Windows Vista and also came up with usb device not recognized. I would like to return my phone to Sprint so I can get the usb connection problem fixed but I need to unroot the phone first. PLEASE HELP! - Josh

you can "re-flash" the stock .img files from Better Terminal. I lucked out on my last phone that went completely dead for no reason I knew of. The techs couldn't revive my rooted phone, so I got a replacement.
Since then, I do a "watered down" root - @forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Without having to wipe everything clean and start from scratch- Flashing the stock and removing root works for me through this:
I copied unrevoked and RA1.6.2 to my sdcard. Use step 7 & 8 (sh /sdcard/unrevoked and flash the RA recovery img). After reboot, I make a nand backup.
For me anyway- by doing none of the rest, it allows me to remove the apps I want to remove and allows me to reflash the stock 2.1 recovery image. I can then update to .6 if necessary to seal it up...flashing the recovery image can be done from the phone using Better Terminal as well.
The only reason I prefer it this way is, I don't want to use a custom ROM and I only want to pull some of the unecessary (for me) apps out. I'll back it up and if need be, I am 1 step closer to "unrooting" it.
I know, I know...but to each his own...I've taken a rooted phone in (no custom ROM) with a speaker issue- no hassles. I've taken a rooted phone in for dust under the screen, way back when- and had to argue the point that ROMS and rooting had nothing to do with a defect in manufacturing that caused the dust under the screen (was able to get a replacement just slightly after my 30 days was up).... So when this last one was completely dead - I thought for sure it was going to cost me.
Long Lost Thank You!
I tried that and it totally worked. I appreciate the detailed feedback. I just realized I never commented back! Now I have an EVO and I just put MIUI on it, can't wait to try it out. Thanks again!

Help Plz! USB not working, is it possible to restore stock?

So about two nights ago I noticed my phone wasn't taking a charge and eventually died. Once the phone was powered off it charges fine but turn it on and no more charging or connect to PC. So I've been searching for a solution since then as this would seem to be a software issue but nothing I have done has made a bit of difference. Now I want to bring the device back to 100% stock to either start fresh or make an exchange with T-Mobile.
Every way to restore to stock required fastboot & adb which obviously I cannot do since I cannot connect to PC. Please share any insights or at the very least steer me in the direction of the light. Thanks

First, if you can boot into android, download a zip of your stock from your phone and flash it through recovery. If you can't do that, see if you have another micro usb cable, try connecting it to your phone and pc and see if that works. If not, cycle through your boot modes connected to pc (bootlader, android -if possible-, and recovery). Do you hear any sounds from your pc that indicate something is connected to it? Especially important for recovery to stock. If you hear a sound when you boot into recovery, you can flash the stock RUU or zip to get your phone back to stock. Next, disconnect phone from your pc, uninstall htc sync and all drivers for the phone. Reconnect the phone to your pc after that, and if it boots to android, it should reinstall sync and drivers automatically. Aside from this, the only other thing I can think of would be an exchange due to faulty usb. Hope this helps. I've included a couple of links to your stock RUU and zip (I'm assuming your T-mobile US). I hope this helps. -Mike
T-Mobile stock nandroid zip (Note: You need CWM for this)
T-Mobile stock RUU (It's an .exe you run with the phone connected to pc in recovery. Scroll to the bottom for the download. You need stock recovery for this)
I hope this helps.
Mike
One more thing: You got lucky no one flamed you for posting a question in the general thread. Next time you should post a question in the Q&A thread. Not everyone is as nice as me around here.

[Q] Stuck

HI, This is my first android so bear with me!! I purchased a galaxy s4 active last October. Since then I dropped it and it has a small crack in the glass in the corner so Samsung wont help me. My phone worked fine after the drop and later took the update, however, aftyer some time I connected it to the computer and an ap i had on my computer ( I think it was part of an antivirus app) said my device needed a new driver and asked to install it at which I said ok. Whatever happened my phone doesnt work. I can start it up but I only get a message that says: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. I have done this time and time again to no avail. Kies says it doesnt recognize my device firmware. I have the update software on my pc and odin and I've tried to reinstall it on the phone with this notice on and in download mode. Either way it fails. Please help if you can, I'm stuck, aggravated, etc....etc.. Thank you MUCH for your time, Herbie :crying:

Ok Sir in new in here but there are certain things i have already understand.
1. Your phone is the intl national versión or regular a&t version (SGH-I537)
2. Wich Android version were You runing before it brake down?
3. Have you tried to push volume down + power? That gets you to Odin mode.
4. If yours is attending version please check this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2625033
That's the whole 4.3 package if your noon look for Odin 3.09 it's way more understandable on where you have to put each package.
5. If your phone is intl version please check samobile
For your phone software and make sure you have downloaded the drivers for your phone.
You can look for them in Samsung.com

My phone is regular at&t version SGH1537 and I updated it to 4.3 OTA before it broke down. As I stated I have the update ( 4.3 ) on my computer and Odin, so of course I tried the download mode but odin said the process failed and my phone is stuck. It wont start up any further than this message!!! :crying:

Try reinstalling the drivers for the i537 (as mentioned before they're on Samsung's site). Also make sure you're using the USB cable that came with the phone. For some reason, not all USB cables will work properly. As long as you can get into Download mode there is no reason you shouldn't be able to Odin back to stock. Make sure the Odin files you downloaded aren't corrupted by checking the MD5. Just keep trying Odin on different computers, with different cables, and different USB ports until it works. It sucks, but for some reason Odin is super picky about what it needs to work properly.

Restore to stock without PC connection?

So I'm on the original stock firmware (AOCE), was rooted with PingPong (since 4/2015). Phone stopped doing fast charge so I was going to wipe and go back to stock with ODIN for troubleshooting when I also found that the device will not be recognized by PC either when I went to pull files. Drivers are fine, see's the gf's Note 4. Download mode isn't recognized either by PC or by ODIN. When plugged into PC, just get 'Cable Charging'. So I called AT&T and they're going to send another one out..... So how f'd am I? After factory reset, running the AT&T update fails, so I'm guessing there's still stuff on there in the /system partition or other 'protected' partitions. Without the ability to connect to it, are they going to find the root stuff? (completely hypothetical)

That's what I've read. Didn't realize direct to Samsung was an option. May check that out.
Just a follow up on this. Decided to replace the USB socket board and it has resolved the issue. Was fun tearing into a $800 device! Actually wasn't bad once the back panel is off.

Note 5 (N920I) USB/OTG Issue [No computer will recognise the device]

Ok ladies and gents,
I've been on a mission to root my Note 5 N920I for months now.
My problem is no computer will read/recognise the device. The Mac's seem to not even recognise it's plugged in, with Windows, no matter which driver I install it keeps telling me the "device descriptor failed blah blah blah". I managed to root my S4 very easily on Mac with Jodin3 so I know that it ain't no user error.
I've Googled and Googled ways to root without a computer or installing a custom recovery without root, but from what I understand I can't flash TWRP as recovery without a computer and therefore cannot root without a custom recovery.
I've Googled ways to fix the USB issue by making the xml file and putting it into the correct folder, but for that I need to be rooted. Right?
When she's plugged into a computer with USB debugging on or off nothing comes up in my notifications except for charging. I tried using the toolbox which I found on here (sorry can't remember the name) though it seemed like I was getting close, I couldn't get close enough before my temper got the better off me.
If my memory serves me correctly the OTG function worked when i first got the phone but didn't after the first update. My mate's Note 5 also has the same issue. I Googled it and seemed it was common issue on these phones.
I've tried to learn some Terminal/Command Prompt to see if I can fix it that way through Debian or whatever, only got as far as understanding it, kind of. Big ups to all you coders/programmers out there it really is an artform.
So PLZ PLZ can y'all help me, there has to be a way aside from setting this thing alight and getting a new phone.
My next mission, which I only embarked on a couple nights ago is unbricking my dad's Note 4 (N910G) that just hit the **** one day after spazzing out for a few days then would not turn on. I'm getting close though I haven't put much effort into that yet.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. ?

1)First of all have you enabled usb debugging and oem unlocking options enabled from developers options?
2)Install latest usb drivers for your model no on pc, use original usb cable to connect your phone
3) Try different usb hub-ports on your pc, it is recommended to use main-usb port to connect device properly which is mostly located backside of cpu cabinet
4)Does odin recognises ur device? If yes then you can flash twrp and cf autoroot both ( Sometimes Kies or smartswtich like programmes enforces device not be reognised, so uninstall them before trying to connect and flashing thorugh odin)
5)Try to update device drivers manually from Pc's administration
6) Try to connect your phone on another pc running windows and see if it recognises your device or not
I've tried all of that, i have a 09 Macbook Pro hand me down running Yosemite with Windows 8.1 Pro n just put Ubuntu on her today through Parallels. None of which recognise the phone being there.
I've plugged it into 2 HP PC's and both just keep telling "device descriptor failed". They're both kinda old too.
Unless someone has a specific driver they've made or found or could make me?? Clearly I'm a noob.
Closest I've found is https://github.com/452/USBHIDTerminal/wiki/How-to-enable-USB-host-API-support but still need root or system mounted as rw.
Any other ideas? Any ADB codes anyone could help me with ?
