Decrypted device: Access internal storage via fastboot/recovery/adb - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

[email protected],
I'm fighting for my "lost pictures and videos" on my Xiaomi Mi 5 with a black screen: no led, no charging symbol or vibration feedback. I'm wondering because it crashed over night when I was sleeping. Bevor I went to bed there was < 10 battery capacity, maybe it was fully discharged.
In short: the device worked a long time and then suddenly death.
This is what I tried to get my device working again (without success):
- pressed any button combinations (also for a long time)
- replaced the battery pack
- disconnect all clips from motherboard
- replaced the display by a local repair center
The good news: by pressing "Power + Volume Up" the device is detected by windows and I can access via ADB.
But I cannot find the internal storage. I checked typical locations like /mnt or /storage but there are empty. I think the reason is that my device is encrypted and must manually mounted / decrypted.
Is it possible to get access to the files of the internal storage via ADB?
Here some informations about my device:
- Xiaomi Mi 5
- lineageOS 15.1 gemini (last update at least 6 Month ago)
- TWRP (version??? The newest version at the beginning of 2019)
- encrypted Android (I must type in a pin to decrypted on every boot)
I hope can recover my files.
Thank you very much!

[Q] S3 LTE I9305 - Unable to boot, corrupt OS? and data recovery

Hi all,
I hope you can help as something very strange and unusual has happened to my Galaxy S3 LTE i9305 (on Orange in UK). Samsung technical support tell me they've not heard of the issue before as do the official repair shop. I have never installed any unusual software or tried to access the internals etc.
On Sat 26th Oct, in the evening, the phone was connected via USB to my laptop charging. There was no data transfer taking place, and the laptop was idle. The phone was not in use, nor was I nearby but randomly it showed the Samsung splash screen logo - it looked a little weird as it was pure black but with random speckles of coloured dots (which made it look like a Galaxy - I thought perhaps I hadn't noticed it before). I was unable to reset so took the battery out and replaced. It did the same thing and then on the second time of removing hte battery the screen became completely white with black marks generating a fuzzy effect - it's been like this ever since.
I get the white fuzzy screen if attempting to turn the phone on, or attempting to recovery mode, however if going to the install option (which I assume happens before Android boots), the screen is absolutely fine and proves not to be at fault. I should add the screen is cracked slightly, it has been since April and is not the cause of this random error.
Tech support tell me that they'll happily accept it back but ultimately, they will wipe the phone and send back as reconditioned. I've tried to connect via Kies, device not found - nor is it when connected to a computer - infact the computer tries to 'install device drivers'.
I'm sure everyone says this however I am an organiser of a large local festival in the UK and the phone has some very important detail storesd in the ColourNote app which I need to access - also the contacts appear not to have synced with GMail since May.... I'm desperate to access these files, for money too potentially, but cannot afford to go down the simple, wipe and reformat easy option. Can you help? Do you know any software that can access data from the internal memory card (note I've removed the external card which contained the photos) How about once the phone has been wiped, to try and see if anything can be recovered then.
Would really appreciate your support, this developer community is my last option and you're normally so awesome, as can't find any reference to the problem online.
Is your colour note app not synced ??
You can try RECUVA data recover.
You need to read the faqs and guides first .
Including the one that covers storage and recovery ..
Samsung reject warranty on phones that have damaged screen .

Hi,
....no I had never set it up. So ironic that was on the to do list in the app.
I'll look into Recuva, is that for before or after I send it off. Is there much chance do you think?
Yes, sorry. I meant to say I also have phone insurance which covers the screen so will have it off to them first, and then onto Samsung - ie 2 places of data wiping!
Thanks for your reply though,
Kind of hoping I may just be able to fix the problem, even if only temporary, but realise it's unlikely

Hi mate,
You can try flashing just the system (and boot) images if you think it's a software issue.
That way your data partition will be intact.
Instructions:
Step 1) Download the Stock ROM you want to use
Step 2) Rename the file from .tar.md5 to just .tar
Step 3) Open the .tar with WinRAR or something similar
Step 4) Extract: system.img (and boot.img if you want the Kernel)
Step 5) Create ODIN file from .img files http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484304
Step 6) Flash the new ODIN file to restore your firmware to Stock!
On Windows you can use Cygwin to run these commands if you don't have access to Linux.
NOTE 1: That guide uses recovery.img as an example but you can replace that text with system.img on the first line.
NOTE 2: If you are adding more than one file (eg. system.img & boot.img) simply list them one after the other with a space between each file.
NOTE 3: Do not include data.img, it WILL wipe your data! Do not include cache.img, hidden.img, these MAY wipe your data!
Best of luck, I hope this helps you out :fingers-crossed:
Have a great day!

So, here’s how you can recover data from a Soft-Bricked Android smartphone:
1. Once you’ve installed a custom recovery on your device, open it using the specific method for your device. E.g for Samsung you can turn off the device completely, then turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power Key and you will be able to access the recovery. These methods vary for different devices.
2. Once in CWM or TWRP Recovery you will find a number of options.
For CWM Recovery, select “Mounts & Storage > Yes”.
In Mounts and Storage menu you will find some more options, from the list select “Mount USB Storage or the option depending upon your choice.”.
Now connect your phone to your PC using the data cable.
As soon as you connect your phone to your PC, the USB Storage / Internal Storage will open up in folder view.
You can copy all of your files to your PC now.
3. For TWRP Recovery, Select “Mount > USB Storage”.
Connect your phone to your PC and it will open up the USB / Internal Storage.
3. Copy your desired files.
That’s all! You can easily recovery all of your data stored on the internal storage of your Android device.

Can you help me with accessing internal memory on bootloader

Hi Moto Z3 fans,
Does somebody can advice me with the following issue.
My MotoZ3 wont start normally - after last phone call it just stop working.
Once I try to push the power button nothings happened.
When I connect the phone to AC power the charging icon only flashes without indicating that the battery is charging.
When the phone is connected to charger or USB port on the computer I cannot start loading via power button.
when the phone is on the charger USB port I can only start the boot-loader menu (fastboot mode) by pressing the buttons: power+volume down. If I choose some of the options (Start OS or Recovery) I can only see initial Moto icon - when the operating system starts and after about a second, the phone restarts and tries to reboot and so on.
I need to copy files from the internal memory of the phone ... I try the following methods:
- Install ADB on the computer(+ drivers), connect the phone to USB port and start boot-loader. When I check device list in ADB it is empty, so I cannot start copy data from phone via ADB. (I don't think that USB debugging was activated before the phone crashed)
- Install LMSA on the computer but there is no option to access internal memory on boot-loader screen. In my case I can only use Rescue option that will flash the phone. In this case LMSA can establish connection with the phone during boot-loader.
I really need to copy data from internal memory before give the phone on the phone service.
My question is the following: it is possible to access the data only on boot-loader menu and how. If it is possible where I am wrong. Does I need some another tool.
Thanks in advance to all of you.

recover /data partition, data loss after shutdown - maybe due to f2fs

Hi
I just discovered that my phone's /data (and /cache) partitions (f2fs filesystem) seem to have gotten corrupted.
my suspicion is that it didn't shutdown safely (powerloss during shutdown, maybe the battery was already emptier than the os thought it was, starting the shutdown then increased the power usage)
The battery is less than a year old. (official replacement, not done by myself)
I didn't connect my 3T to power last night (forgot about it)
I connected it to power the next morning and went to eat breakfast, when I came back it was booted up. It still recognized my fingerprint and last app sessions still have screenshots from my apps. The home screen background is still the same. My apps are all still there as far as I can see.
But: all the data is gone. My apps start like I installed them fresh from the store and opening my file manager none of my files are there any more. only 15gb of 128gb used up. (it was closer to 100gb)
Upon noticing this I immediatly went to twrp (3.2.3-10) to use it's repair feature for the partition. -> Error 139
I did the same for my /cache partition and got the same error so I suspect it got corrupted as well.
I'm running Havoc OS 2.4, Android 9.0 (didn't get around to update it and it ran smooth without any major issues for months)
Is there any way for me to backup what is still there (maybe even sector copy (dd))?
Is it possible to repair such an image in Linux or recover some of the files from it?
Is it possible that a newer twrp version actually still can repair my /data partition?
Or is all hope lost? Did my smartphone automatically reformat /data? or has it maybe not touched the partition but cannot use it correctly?
What happens in this case on Android? Would've been nicer (for me) to run into a bootloop instead so I can figure out what's going on, before any hope is lost.
I'm pretty sure encryption was turned off due to magisk/root.
Once I set up the smartphone again I'll switch ext4. I currently blame f2fs but I'm not sure.
I have backups of the important data that was on my smartphone, but if there is any way, it would be nice to recover the rest (images, videos in original resolution etc.)
:fingers-crossed:
If anyone could contribute ways for me to look into this or show me how to proceed, I would be very greatful.
and maybe it's not even f2fs's fault after all.
Regards
EDIT:
in twrp's file manager the file system looks the same btw. (/storage or /sdcard look like factory default)
EDIT2:
I managed to create an .img file from my userdata partition by using the adb command from twrp's adb shell
adb shell 'dd if=/dev/block/sda15 2>/dev/null' > sda15.img

I hope that will help
I'll try https://www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=17133/ once it finished transfering the img file

3.Some Phones Like Eg.Oneplus Have OTG Option In the Status Bar Customisation Tab..
4.Use An Prober Cable [OR] See If It Works On The Other Phone..
5.Important The Drive/SD You're Using Doesn't Have Any Hardware Issues!
6.Best Thing Is Two Option.
A.Software Update.
B.Factory Reset - Data Loss [Not Recommended]

7. Display changed, back changed, not original phone, not free (guarantee) service. Service + old unrooted, locked bootloader phone, ... too
I'm used IDT to flash. Only have CLT-AL00A-BD_1.0.0.46 Board Software firmware. Flashed in testpoint mode. All upload ok. After power on:
Imei: 000000000000...
Model: unknown

What is a good version for SD update? First 8.1 or latest 10?
HiSuite searching update, no update!
Restored phone with PC and USB.
Problem: The TWRP version.
Changed TWRP version to 3.3, OTG working, newer version (3,4, 3.5) unsupported OTG.
More function not work in old version (restore backed up system partition: error, etc.).

Hi there, can you please help me out ?I have one Huawei P20 pro, that had a fall and the back was smashed in to pieces, also glass on the back that's covering the camera was broken.I have cleaned it up and replaced the back on it ,now it was really temperamental,as of you tap on it it will just restat itself, apart from that wa ok,soo I was thinking maybe software error, soo done a factory reset and now is stuck in boot loop.Is not powering on the android operating system.I have tried all the restoration methods that you had tried upper but can't make it load the android operating system....I even bought that small and card reader that you can plug in the charger port to try and install the operating system again ,but even of the led light on the card reader is on , doesn't do anything...any guidance?
Thank you!

If not rooted, use PC with Hisuite official software.
If not communicated to phone, need to reflash manually. This is not free.
In DC-Unlocker site download 2 software + pay 3 day license for this softwares and use.
Bootloop and cracking not related!
Cleared chaches??? Not solve?
Done factory erase, done cache memory erase, done restart and just staying on the Huawei screen where is saying down at the bottom Powered by Android for few minutes and after that goes in to the white meniu where you can select factory reset, updates (tried the WiFi update is not connecting),now I got the firmware and Kiwibird 4 in 1 card reader that you can plug up the "ass " of the phone usingOTG hopefully I can install the firmware from there...I have downloaded the firmware and just putting it on the SD card...have you tried that way?
Firmware install not working "offline" mode.
TWRP and any other not read OTG, only live system.
Another problem: OTG only support FAT/FAT32, not supported NTFS, ExFAT (Live system: need Paragon software). The firmware file more than FAT32 filesize limit (2GB), only stored NTFS or ExFAT = FW file too large for FAT.
Your FW upload only 3 method.
1. Boot to recovery, and set ADB mode, download the FW zip to DLOAD dir (from PC with USB cable + ADB), and install. (NOT TESTED!)
2. Boot to recovery, and set wifi recovery. Connect to wifi AP, download latest downloadable FW and install. (NOT TESTED)
3. Paid method: DC-Unlocker & DC-Phoenix work with standard recovery (limited access) and work own uploaded recovery (self opened bootloader/virtual testpoint).
OTG/SD not option for FW update!
Thanks you for your time, and writing back to me,yes, good point with different types of partitions,I forgot about it...I did try the nr.2 method and is not working,it can't download anything,I have trying different wiFi points, not starting any download,it does connect to the WiFi but can't find anything to be downloaded.
First method is not going to work as I have no access to set ADB mode, only fastboot mode, and is displayed that phone is locked soo, bootloader is locked and can't open it...soo only method to try is theast one...but don't know how much will that cost me.
Also I am thinking of other people said that the battery can have a problem too as my battery is getting empty fast...also something strange maybe..but if you tap the phone on the upper side on the edge it's restarting itself...I am thinking to open it up and try like that as in the past had been dropped soo back glass and camera glass have been replaced, but was working, until I have done factory reset and the process got interrupted in the middle of it and that was it...since.then..Inhave tried reset, factory reset, wipe cache, nothing working.
The softwares for 3 day ~20$. The DC-unlocker site write correct actual price.
If bootloader not opened, only available FW-update in Hisuite Huawei official software.
Test in recovery mode or bootloader mode.
(My recovery is TWRP, not available recovery method. Your available.)
Test connect to phone this software! If yes, but not available firmware, need to use special VPN software. Download offline your phone firmware to PC, or set specified link to VPN soft and Hisuite: update available! (Need Hisuite downgrade for this VPN method.)
If this update not working, purchase 3day license.
Need offline firmware file for your phone.
Soft-bootloader open if not working, use testpoint. (The DC-Phoenix manual write the testpoint position.)
Start the process in PC, Short testpoint to GND and plug USB. (If need, install drivers.)
Started upload unlocked bootloader and unlocked old recovery. After finished, reboot to recovery. (Without accu, work end... after reboot only work with plugged accu.) (Not need unplug accu!)
After booted recovery, wait PC to identify recovery mode, and started download.
The download 2 part! 1= firmware, 2=cust file. Need all selecting!
The download automated. Please wait for 100%. After end, rebooted to system.
Check IMEI, phone signal, MAC numbers. All ok? End flashing.
Wrong or no IMEI, bad MAC? Need the second software.
The second software unlock bootloader, FRP lock, all lock.
Unlocking bootloader (not need): software say the unlocking number, phone boot bootloader, PC USB ADB (Fastboot) command need to write the code, phone question: yes? Is yes, rebooted to recovery and CLEAR ALL DATA! After cleraing, boot system.
All phone start displayed "Phone untrusted".
Unlocked bootloder = uploadable TWRP or any recovery, after not need testpoint to flash.
Root: only rootable 8.1 system. (Not tested 8.1+, bootloader code not readable.)
Hi there mate,I have manage.to fix my phone, just following an old post here, with one russian website, where I got the firmware, put it on the SD card ,by the way you can make it eXFat ,will work for larger sizes, mine was 128 GB,and had to reboot the phone in update mode but selecting OTG/SD and it worked first time!I manage to update it with Android 10.After that all good, done the updates up to 12.
Thank you for your support and time!
Have a great week!
8.1 (stock) System and recovery not compatibilie / not read ExFat.
I have 8.1 System (rootable). In 8.1 OTG/SD update not working.
Check your filesystems:
Code:
$ cat /proc/filesystems
...
msdos
vfat
exfat
...
(This is a different device.)
Yes, system ok... i was wrong.
TWRP recovery not read any OTG! Other version TWRP read OTG, and not read correctly system partitions (half phone not read).
Standard recovery not available for me to testing.

Question Soft bricked X90 Pro Plus

well my x90 pro plus deep uncharged, wouldn't power one anymore before I connected it for like 3-4 minutes - and once powered one it was soft bricked - it would boot to the screen showing vivo symbol and get stuck there. So first I thought let's try to update/reinstall the system (in order to not lose data).
can access now only fastboot, recovery and wifi update page (via recovery). Phone will not boot past the vivo message - likely also not fully load system partitition.
-- Wiping Data
Error: logwrapper : Cannot log to file /dev/fscklogs/log

Error: logwrapper : Cannot log to file /dev/fscklogs/log

Data wipe compelte.
Can wipe cache.
Can get to update menu - however on entering the wifi password it starts searching for updates - then goes to another screen saying retry.
Bootloader is locked.
System file integrity check fails with:
Now check beings, please wait...
use sha256 check:
--mount System fs_type_invalid
System check success
Local update isn't possible as I have no local system.zip in root.
How do I even contact support? I have no invoice as I bouth this via an importer that doesn't pass on invoices. I remember I once checked warranty and as on first use I selected Austria - it told me warranty is in Austria (not that X90PP is even sold there). But I don't know where to login to my vivo account without having the phone. I will be in Austria in a month or so - right now in a country where Vivo isn't sold at all.
Guess I should take a hammer and smash this crap phone.
The first time I went into software updates it actually started downloading the full OTA - it started upgrading but then crashed 2/3 thorugh. Tried the same thing again - same problem. Then went into hard reset - which failed. And since then it's as above ant not even downloading software anymore.
Now not sure what happened there. Maybe it bricked while failing of the software update?
Also it doesn't shut down anymore with power cable connected (without it does), it will just crash and run out of battery deep discharging while being connected and getting crazy hot.
If switched off and connecting a charging cable - power spark symbol will pop up (but not charge!) then pull power cable and the symbol stays there until battery is fully depleted with phone running hot.
