HarmonyOS(Huawei/Honor developed operating system) - Honor Play Guides, News, & Discussion

What do you think about Huawei developing a new operating system for contingency plan? Are we going to see Honor Play running it in the future?

I really doubt current phones will see it, newer models yes. Possibly dual booting in case Google decide to ban Huawei completely.

Question about other OS

It does seem that the Asus MeMo Pad 7 ME572C does not have an unlocked bootloader yet, so its obvious that right now it probably won't work (from what I've read so far).
But you think later on this device could run regular operating systems like Fedora, Ubuntu, Gentoo, etc?
Apparently it's considered an x86_64 architecture, so I would think it would support nearly everything as long as the bootloader supported it.
Just curious on what other people's inputs are.
I'm wondering with the launch of Windows 10, Asus may unlock the bootloader and give us the option to install Windows 10? Xiaomi is doing it, why not Asusu?
http://www.neowin.net/news/microsof...devices-to-windows-10-phones-with-special-rom
This hardware would make a great general purpose tablet if it had an unlocked bootloader and the proper bsp/drivers available for different os's to use. Unfortunately it does not appear as if companies want to take on the burden of supporting that sort of device...
I wish they would at least offer unsupported ways... I have found this tablet to be kind of useless since there is no way to actually customize it even with a custom ROM

Shall we do a petition for the EMUI interface?

Why shall we do a petition for EMUI interface?
I love huawei and their EMUI. But, there must be lots of improvements so they can get the TOP 1 best custom interface for Android.
1.Let us remove what we want.
Yes. Bloatware is a pain in our heads. For both performance and battery. If we had the opportunity to remove the Google apps that are installed in the system, then it would be a great thing.
2.Equal features on all phones.
I like the features included in EMUI, but there are different features for different phones. For example we don't have the smart touch, some screenshot gestures, night shot and so on. Having them is a MUST DO. And yes, our phone does SUPPORT all the features from other phones (except hardware-related features like honor 8's clickable fingerprint)
3.Optimizations
Emui 5.x already has some performance and battery tweaks already included in the software. But there aren:t enough. We still suffer of battery drain due to bad optimization of the Android System, which can be fixable very easily.
4.Listen to their customers
We all want something, but Huawei doesn't listen. It was a pain that they removed the firmware links from their websites (which it was a bit good to prevent fake software sd card updates), at least to listen to us. I know they want to become a top company, but if they listen to us and give us what we want in the EMUI or phones (as long as they can too.), Then that will be very awesome. Equal features and equal software (like how Apple does to their phones) then Huawei will beat Apple for sure in terms of software "updates"
So, who's with me?

Huawei is not going to change anything just because a small group of android modders wants to have more control of their phone.
Just remember that P9 Lite's main consumer target were regular people which don't care about this.
They just want a working phone. Nothing more.

You have my point.
But still, they promised that they will fix this and that, nothing happened.
One day, they will leave this phone on 7.0 and never ever get updates. I bet that.

At least they released EMUI 5 kernel sources;
Anyway make a petition, you have my support but still i don't think that this will lead to anywhere.

Idk, It's your idea anyway
you should rethink what you've posted!
They can't do anything about google apps for example because they are forced to implement them on a system basis - e.g. play store, play services, google photos and so on. Additionally the newer phones just have a different feature set because they run their latest EMUI version - which in my opinion - is thought out pretty well as they have to deliver a premium feel to the end user.. Why a company this big focusses on it? Well, they are pushing their last-available-smartphone-sales through it. Btw, did you ever thought about a hardware dependent feature set? Like those the screen supports and so on.
I have only one addition to your list - project treble for upcomming oreo release (which p9 lite SHOULD get aswell as the Honor 6x receives it by the end of the year).

True. Oreo is much important right now.
But still, there are DISABLED USEDFULL features like Night shot, private space, app twin and those gestures from build.prop file. That pissed me off a bit... Because those features work 100% with no issues.

Change.org petition to Huawei re. P9 Android Patches and System Upgrades

Need help to get a petition signed. Basically Huawei are not providing any Android updates or patches regarding them for UK unlocked phones. (This issue may be wider than expected but I can only comment on my experience with UK unlocked models)
Here in the UK unlocked P9 devices are still on Android 6 and haven't been patched since Sep 2016.
We are missing updates for both official monthly security updates and operating system updates (Nougat at the very least)
This makes phones vulnerable to security threats which in turn puts users data at risk (especially important when using banking / finance / MFA / 2FA apps
Huawei support have absolutely no idea if / when any updates would be made available but they 'think' they are being rolled out very slowly
Their advice so far hasn't helped (clear app cache, use HiSuite, USB etc) as I believe the updates are just not available
For a flagship phone (which was their first to reach 10 million sales and now well over 12 million) this is completely unacceptable.
The phone is around 1.5 years old and has a high enough specification to take updates and operating system upgrades.
Huawei are not only putting critical user data at risk (in not patching) but also are quietly obsoleting these phones by not providing timely system upgrades.

Why not follow the various guides on here and update manually - far quicker than trying to get Huawei to do anything via a petition.

Understand that is an option, I use my phone for business use and don't fancy the risk. If enough people do sign it I believe it will name/shame Huawei into taking some action. I'm not expecting miracles. Just want to start somewhere than accept the current position as acceptable.

The critical mass required to force Huawei to act would far exceed the exposure this forum could give.
Having de-branded from Vodafone UK and updated to the latest firmware in less than two hours, I'd say the risk is minimal in terms of downtime.

Have posted the petition onto quite a few forums and will continue doing so on others.
If it doesn't work at at least I know I've tried. Will re-visit those firmware updates.
This will have no effect whatsoever.
I was a bit apprehensive about manually updating my phone too but if you follow the instructions you really can't do any damage. I'm now on the latest software version with what was previously an EE branded phone.
If you are already unbranded (i.e. software version number includes C432) then you are laughing as it's even easier.

Google is banning Huawei

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-huawei-tech-alph abet-exclusive-idUSKCN1SP0NB
They are not "banning them", they are just stopping doing business with them until the US government comes out of their drug-induced state, and reverse course on their recent blacklisting.
This is most likely just Google being forced by the government, which is using this blacklisting as a mean to strong-arm China in their recent trade discussions.
What truly pisses me off is how these schoolyard politics is affecting us non-American.
Time for the world to migrate to another open OS for phone and PC. One country cannot hold the world consumers at ransom this way.
And Google silently complying to US govt. demand while ditching millions of worldwide consumers says a lot.
Didn't this happen to ZTE?
I heard we will still have access to the play store but I assume we won't get future android updates or android 10 when it's out? My p30 Pro is going back and swapping for S10 I think.

I have the same problem right now. Just bought the P30 Pro a few days ago because Huawei promised to bring out Android 10 short time after Googles release. Now it's just guessing if the update will come out or not. If not this devices is already near it's EOL since Huawei doesn't provide boot loader unlock codes...
I hope Google will sort this out and finds a way to still give Huawei access to Android 10, or Huawei must start giving out boot loader unlock codes again so the community can provide future android updates for the devices.
Huawei central
hongmeng is huaweis first ever self developed operating system Huawei
https://www.******************/hongmeng-is-huaweis-first-ever-self-developed-operating-system/amp/
Huawei can still implement future versions of android through the AOSP, as stated in most of the articles discussing the topic. They will not provide access to Google Play services such as the Play Store and 'baked in' apps such as Gmail and Chrome.
I can't foresee the availability of services being affected to an already-approved device, however I don't think it will be positive for a Mate 30 Pro if it is in the works. Likewise I am unsure about whether they would want to release Android 10 if it didn't contain the play services, but as said I think certification is done per-device, not per OS revision.
Update: While future Huawei smartphone plans are in doubt following the restrictions, Google has promised to continue offering security and app updates through its Play Store for existing handsets.
Yeah, but the monthly device patches is an other thing. And what about Android Q? If this damn device could be boot loader unlocked it would be a god sent now.

wonder how this will affect those who have taken out contracts??
not a very good smart phone if stuff dont work on it (maps, youtube, gmail, chrome)
They seem to all be forgetting something. https://www.businessinsider.com/snowden-leaks-timeline-2016-9
I mean, must be me, but I'd much rather own and use (and root) a Huawei phone than a Google one.
Anyone that wants to sell me their P30 Pro Black, please message me. I'll pay you €300 for it.

you know the apks will be out there and available to download and install right onto your device
I'm neither Chinese or American or living in either of these countries - I just want to use my P30 Pro in peace like everybody else.
Why does everything have to be political these days. Nobody wins. I still believe it's because the US is jealous that Apple can't be #1 so they're doing everything they can. Look at OnePlus, Xiaomi and Vivo... they're Chinese companies too.
I think the whole thing is just....ridiculous....I'm in the US and drool over the p30 pro literally almost every day. I really wish the government would just stop with the non-sense and B$. Its silly and does nothing but hurt the companies and end users. This combined with the tariffs is just stupid in my opinion.
Well at this point the statement regarding the bootloader unlock:
"the unlock code application service has ended, as of July 25th 2018, to ensure user experience and safety"
prevents user experience and safety... and this is the perfect time to get Huawei to give us the unlock codes...
just continue the discussion here alot of useful infos

Not that easy...
Users will not be able to just side-load APKs for these services because Google prohibits CTS-unverified devices from running its apps. Besides Google apps, all the others that use Google’s APIs, to facilitate log-in, for instance, will also be blocked on smartphones by Huawei and sub-brand Honor.

Will we get the emui 10 update?

I looked at the features, and they were very promising. It even includes a dark mode!

Well, the phone's been out only a year so it should get it. Always worrying when you see the manufacturer promising updates for other devices but not yours. Why do they do that? I sold my Moto 5gs because of the lack of updates, so won't be buying them again. Ditto Samsung. Maybe i'll just get Pixel phones in future. I expect more than 12 months support (plus I read that Huawei/Honor were switching to quarterly security updates - we'll see). The Honor Play was very good value for money, and it would be hard to justify devices without SD card slots but I'm really not in the "get a new phone every year or two" game. My chromebook has an EOL date in about 5 years time; why shouldn't my phone, too?
Looking forward to the dark mode, although puzzled that it requires OS support.
With Project Treble and Mainline you'd think that Google are almost at the point where they can roll out OS updates behind the manufacturers backs.
Interestingly, looking at the Android dashboard, which historically has shown Android OS usage, you can see it's been down since May:
https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards
I wonder if this is going to come back in October when they announce the Pixel 4, and they're going to blow everyone away by saying Android 9 adoption has beaten all the other versions?

Probably, the biggest downside of honor and huawei phones is the lack of bootloader unlock codes, which leads to not much developer support. So I'm just always kinda looking out for updates
There is no official confirmation for Honor Play, unlike the Honor 8x or Honor 10 etc. Even if we do get the update, it isn't going to come anytime soon. Check this out: https://www.xda-developers.com/emui-10-android-10-update-timeline-huawei-honor/
The phone is still a massive value for its current price in terms of raw performance. I'm pretty content with it. Despite the quirks of EMUI, I've grown quite attached to it and will prefer it over almost all other android skins except probably full stock android...
Possibly, we might get Android 10 on Honor Play second quarter of next year.
I don't know how much we can trust this picture
But it's highly possible that we can forget about emui 10 for next 4-6 month for sure because emui 9.1 has been rolled out just yet
It is becoming obvious it will take time before Honor Play will receive EMUI 10 (if at all it will receive the update). It is not even on the list of Honor smartphones that will get Android 10 in the future. I am surprised to see Honor 8X included but not Honor Play.

Honor 8x got sales numbers. Honor play didn't
Honestly this is bull****. Why the **** people buy a ugly ass honor 8x with kirin 710 when they can buy a honor play at the same price
It is not getting. Honor service in twitter confirmed that Honor play is going to get next major android 10 updates due to "hardware limitations".
This is particularly strange because Honor play has Kirin 970, the flagship processor of Huawei of 2017-18. It is the same processor of the p20, which is scheduled for the update.
As Honor won't be sending it. Thus I am planing for unlocking bootloader in any way as soon as they push emui 10 update lol

But samsung have changed and now apparently promise 4 years of upgrades. The android one site is out of date and doesn't include the new £99, £129 etc phones nokia have announced which will get 2 years support. Seems funny typing it - like we should feel grateful to get support. It should be 5 years. But yes, huawei/honor aren't getting any more of my money. If you knew the honor play was going to get 1 os upgrade around 14 months after launch and that's it, would you have bought the phone. I wouldn't. Fool me once...
