Updated list of tempered glass that work with fingerprint sensor? - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

im buying a SECOND mi9 because my current one was demolished after falling out my motocycle glove compartment. it had no screen protector because everyone o brought messed with the fingerprint scanner. i see here that the Nillkin 3D CP+ MAX/XD CP+ MAX is one but its pretty bad. any other ones confirmed working?

I'm using nillkin amazing cp+. It's pretty good except when you've got extremely dry fingers and you slide about so the fingerprint reader doesn't recognise. If that makes sense. It's not a big deal tho

I got the sgp crystal. Been using steinheil protectors since my gnex and I like them a lot. Fits perfect and feels good. No cutout for the proximity sensor, but no issues caused by it in my use. I'd definitely recommend it.

I'm using a free screen protector which came with Ringke Slim case. So, I believe this screen protector is Ringke Invisible Defender PET. I actually love this. It's smooth and clear. I didn't have any troubles to install. I used the hinge method and worked great.
I'm using this just for a week. So, I don't know how long it lasts but... so far so good

I have this one too, I bought a 3-pack after having used a Rearth/Ringke film protector on my Galaxy S3 for years. It does have the cutout for the proximity sensor, whether that affects the sensor or not it speaks to their attention to detail I think. Anyway, so far so good. It was easy to apply with no bubbles and the edges haven't peeled up.
Just got the Ringke one yesterday also and it looks great and has cut out for the grills, camera, and proximity sensor.
I originally bought "6-Pack Ultra Clear HD XtremeGuard HI-DEF Screen Protector Cover For LG Nexus 5X," but those were cut terribly, i.e., edges were not straight and the edges would not stay down, so bought the Ringke ones. Seems to be working great.
I haven't used PET film protectors in awhile, but back when I did, I found Martin Fields to consistently be the best. They're pricey, but worth it.
Does the proximity sensor cutout matter for PET films too or is it only a tempered glass problem?
Thought of going Martin Fields but it seems like there might be no cutout:
http://www.martinfields.com/SG/MFOP-GoogleNexus5X
I do have one PET film I bought for fifty cents on hand now though.

That's a good question, and I wish that I had an answer for you. I haven't used PET film in a few years. I'd recommend emailing them. Back when I used them, they were very responsive to email inquiries.
EDIT: Poster above states his PET film had no cutout for proximity sensor, with no issues (different brand).

I emailed and seems like there hasn't been any complains.
Martin Fields is expensive but it has that extra camera lens protector piece.
Though after 2 years the piece on my Nexus 5 screen has some dot marks like sand grains imprints and minor scratches on it.

No oleophobic coating..

It seems P10 does not have display oleophobic coating, super weird. I wonder how annoying is this in real life usage..
It comes with a screen protector preinstalled.
Still... I usually don't use screen protectors. Sounds stupid not to use coating
Yes it comes with a protector, but it is a huge smudge magnet (compared to Mate 9).
I'm glad I got to try it first in a store. It's incredibly annoying and as soon as I placed one finger on the screen smudges appeared and were there to stay. Seriously you have to see it and try it in real life, the difference between this and having the usual coating is night and day.
I don't want to use no screen protector, it's ugly and it completely defeats the purpose of having 2.5D glass. Such a shame.
Horrible. I just ordered mine. I don't get it, how can a serious company skip this? And how come ONLY ONE reviewer mentioned this?
It's an odd choice, but it has not bothered me yet. I did remove the pre-installed screen protector because it doesn't swipe smoothly.
Makes sense, why keeping a screen protector when you have Gorilla 5 and beautiful design? So you haven't notice any extra dirt on the screen because of the non-oleophobic coating?

I had a P10 on pre-order with CPW but after watching several video reviews my eyes were drawn to the horrid screen protector and the way there are gaps all around it. Once I saw it, I couldn't stop seeing it and knew I couldn't live with it on a daily basis. Given the 2.5D glass, all screen protectors would have these gaps. Then I was getting concerned about future updates - I spend an unhealthy amount of time getting excited about updates, lol and there are no guarantees with Huawei.
My top two phone features (assuming all else is at least good) are camera and regular updates. This led me to the Google Pixel. I bought one on Monday - a beautiful black 32GB model which now sports an excellent Nillkin frosted hard protective case - also in black. It looks amazing.
According to Huawei there is oleophobic coating on the screen, but less than usual. Apparently it's because the fingerprint sensor doesn't work well with the coating (as the fingerprint sensor is under the glass and not a separate button as on most other phones).
I'm not a screen protector fan either...so if it sucks I will probably try to apply a oleophobic coating on my own (shark proof coating or something like that)
I should be receiving my P10 on Friday and i did order Shark Proof ahead of time just because i personally don't like screen protectors at all so i'm hoping it will do the trick.
Never heard of Shark Proof until now. Is it really working?

Huawei's official response is that they couldn't apply a full coating to the P10 display because of the fingerprint sensor. On the P10 the sensor is part of the display itself rather than a separate button and the oleophobic coating wouldn't allow it to work. The P9 sensor is on the back so I would assume the lack of a coating is P10 specific.
I tried 3 different liquid protectors on my old iPhone 5, But they're not that good as the companies say. All three, Kristall, Shark proof and Wowfixit, didn't work properly. A coin or a key in the same pocket while walking and this protectors will scratch.
The biggest problem with those liquid protectors is that you can't see them so you don't know if they're working or not.
I have a "like glass" protector on my P10 and its feeling good. The sensors on top and the finger print sensor are cut out precisely and there's only a small gap between the smart cover case I'm using and the protector.
I work as an electrician and I need protection for my phone because sometimes I have no time to think about the things I put in my pockets, but my i6S with case and glass looks like new after 1.5 years of using and I hope the P10 will do the same.
What "like glass" protector would you recommend? I tried a few protectors back in the day and I hated how it felt when touching the screen...

I have one from "dipos". It's not perfect but it's okay for 7€ for 2 protectors.
The lack of accessories is annoying. It was much easier to find a good protector for my i6S.
Tried my pre-installed screen protector.... it was bad !!!..... feels like fifty cents cheap protector... anyone can comment if remove it will be better ? the pre-installed is not even smooth to use...
waiting for the matte protector......
I removed the preinstalled protector as soon as I put my finger in it...the screen is quite smooth to use for me, though I have problems if water droplets land on it...other then this it feels the same way my old LG G5 did.
I recommend you to try it and check how it feels...at least until your new protector arrives

How scratch resistant is it? Do you use a case?

Hey people, I was wondering: how does it hold up against scratches? I have the blue, with the ridged back, but so far afraid to use it without a case... How do you use yours? Does is scratch easily? What about the screen?

It uses gorilla glass 5, which scratched very easily on my S9. I had small scratches after a day with no case on the S9. I imagine this phone will be no different.

I feel the same way. Unfortunately. I am curious about the back though...
Back seems to hold up (maybe non touch sensitive glass is easier to make scratch resistant) the front 2 scratches in the first week... And I used a soft pouch until proper accessories come out.
Got a skin on the back and a crappy plastic screen protector for now.

Allright thanks for the answer, so it seems I have to buy smth for the screen after all..
I have some scratches on mine. I am very careful with it, no coins etc. So I will definitely be using a case with the replacement phone I am getting tomorrow for display issues.

I do wonder though, if it scratches the olephobic coating or the actual glass is scratched. A colleague of mine has the s7 until last week without a protector and said screen was always perfect. But it got fingerprinty as hell.
Wonder if one of those nano liquid coatings would smooth it out. I have accidental damage insurance so if that works I would rid of the scratches with that.
You might have a point there with the coating. I have noticed that as well on my samsung phones.
I tried that nano liquid, but havent noticed much diferrence though.

I guess I got lucky. I got a case and a tempered glass screen protector for free with my purchase in Taiwan. Finger print scanner works perfect. I should have checked what the brand was. It was a flagship Huawei store, so obviously they knew what they were putting on there.

See...that it why they buy iphone or smsng, cause they dont mess up important stuff... You mean the glass ones? Or the foils?
I am challenging those that think Mate 20 Pro uses Gorilla Glass (I have read the 1 or 2 reviews that state this), and it's not listed in the Gorilla Glass website. Also worried about scratches I reached out to Huawei AU and received the following:
To answer your inquiry, this phone uses aluminosilicate glass for both front and back which is also Scratch resistant and is composed of aluminum, oxygen, silicon, and several other positively charged ions.

I am seeing the above noted comments and "scratch resistant" or not, it's obvious this phone needs a case and screen protector.
I wish it had Gorilla Glass 6!
No case... Back skin and plastic screen protector

Question Anyone found a good glass screen protector that doesnt screw with the fingerprint scanner?

I tried 2 before reading reviews....they make the fingerprint scanner almost useless. I tried looking up reviews of other alternatives and they all aren't great.
Even the more expensive choices. I'm now looking at full case (aka front and back covers) choices. I have typically hated them (like the Otterbox, etc). Anyone know of a full body case that doesn't add a ton of size to the phone.
I tried one of those ebay glass front/back cases and I love it but once you dropped the case it pretty much was useless (either glass screen cracked or they case never stayed together after a significant drop...magnets are what held the 2 examples I tried....clearly the quality was hit or miss).
Am I just being picky? I'm either looking looking a full body case that's mostly clear and doesn't a ton of size or a glass screen protector that actually works with the fingerprint scanner.
Never had this many issues trying to get something that works consistently.
When I had my note 20 ultra I bought tempered glass for it and I basically had to turn on increased touch sensitivity, and delete and readd all fingerprints and it kinda worked but was annoying as hell..
I then changed (and I use also for my s21 ultra) something called hydrogel which is not hard as temperedglass or ceramic shield, but it does a hell of a job protecting the screen AND doesn't affect fingerprints, I actually hit the screen against a table corner and nothing happened...

There are a few post already talking about glass screen protectors. White stone dome and amfilm seem to be good competitors. I have whitestone and love the feel. As far as a clear case, my wife has Speigen hybrid with a clear back but it will def scratch because it's plastic. I wanted to try your glass case but I knew better that it would crack or break when dropped
I've got the Whitestone Dome Glass and the fingerprint reader works fine. Don't forget to remove the factory-installed screen protector first. I forgot that the first time, and that screwed with the fingerprint reader.

I also use the Spigen Neo-Hybrid screen protector. It's clear, good quality and works just fine. I think the finger print sensor issues are more about Samsung's continued failure in this arena rather it being a screen protector issue.

That's good to know. I plan to get one, and there are quite a few people reporting that even Whitestone glass would make the finger print scanner work less well...
I think maybe it's due to improper installation steps
There was a time whitestone didn't work for me when I got my s10 plus. Bought it from samsung along with a whitestone from Amazon. Back when you had to tilt the tray and pull tab to drop the protector on. It went perfect 3 times I did it but the fingerprint scanner would barely recognize my print, had to go with a zagg. I don't know what the difference with their glass now, but my finger print is reading. I did hold down 30 secs after the initial 15 secs to cure it, but I didn't do it on my wife's and hers is working also. I also put my print scan more than once just so I wouldn't have a prob but it works unless my hands are dry
Are y'all remembering to delete and re-add your fingerprints after you put your protector on?
I don't know what's happened to Whitestone because I had it on my S8plus and it was great but the s21u one is trash. The first of the two I had chipped in the corner (no idea how) and when I tried to take it off it was stuck to the screen and was a nightmare to take off, I had to use a hairdryer and slowly pick it off. I put a new one on last Friday and now this one has chipped. I haven't dropped it or anything, it's almost like the glass is so thin it's crumbled away. The quality has gone downhill and the glass seems so thin now it's just not lasting long.
Maybe they are trying to get it as thin as possible to facilitate solid response of the FP sensor, thus the thin glass.... Just a thought, no excuse

It's not that great the FP sensor either. I'd say it works about 30% of the time. It's a real disappointment overall and I paid a heck of a lot for it.

I used one of these on my s10+ and it felt great and looked beautiful. The FP sensor only worked 20% of the time, but ultimately I hardly needed to use it. I found a discount code on another thread. There were actually 2 codes, 1 for 30% off and another for 20% off the amfilm tempered glass. Amazon also had a $2 off coupon. It took it from $40 20 $17.99. For that price I will do it and try putting pressure on it after the initial uv.
Has anyone tried the new one from Spigen the Platinum?

I think I saw a video, where it shows that AM film actually gives a little metal weight to place over the FP sensor when using the UV to put a bit of pressure on that point.
My Whitestone Dome is working just fine. Not 100% perfect but pretty close.
I love the amfilm one! A little bit more pricey than I'm used to paying, but it's 39.99 for 2 tempered glass screens and a UV light that works awesome. Only after effects was some of the liquid you use to cure the screen kinda didn't fully cure on the edges so a little bit liquid. That you could just wipe off, but other than that I love it and it works great!. Honestly tho my fingerprints are crap because I work in the field alot. But when my fingerprints are clean and warm lol it works great!

Tldr: amFilm tempered glass screen protector

Accessories Tempered Glass and cover

If you are interested the original leather cover by Samsung is absolutely gorgeous and the IMBZBK tempered glass (from Amazon) has a perfect application and the fingerpint sensor works without any noticeable reduction of sensibility (with my old s21 the tempered glasses make the fingerprint sensor almost unusable). The only issue as usual is the screen coverage (but is a fully accettable 1mm of uncovered screen on each side between the cover bumpers) and the punch hole (not the U shape hole, thankfully) on the front camera, but, once applicated this "technical issue" are barely noticeable
I can recommend the Spigen Glass protector.
Foolproof application, covers IMO the whole screen and so far no uses with the fingerprint sensor or using it with a cass
I took the Anoowka one at 8.99€ 'Coz I know most is just a matter of brand but it's the same factory ^^
I got 2 tempered glasses with 2 cameras protections. So far so good. Perfect mm cut. And hopefully with the punch hole

I am using it right know.
Fits perfectly, very very easy to apply, 2 glasses are included, if you should somehow mess up the first one.
Both are already on the plastic template, so no need to fiddle around.
Glass feels very smooth, finger print sensor works with glass better than on my old phone without any protector (Xiaomi Mi 10).
I did reregister my finger prints to be on the save side.
It covers the whole screen including the selfie cam.

Spigen glass is expensive and it is not available on amazon so I was thinking about getting X Glass from Gadgetshieldz which is $15 less than Spigen and they give 2 pieces. Did anyone try this tempered glass?
Spigen arrived and installed from Amazon Italy: absolutely perfect. Barely noticeable on phone (0.5mm of uncovered glass surface, compatibile with any cover i have (spigen and samsung), camera completely covered without any loss of quality and perfect fingerprint reader functionality (i don't have to re-register fingerprint from my previous IMBZBK glass.
"Expensive" product, but is really totally another level: THE tempered glass for S23.
Just a note: the same tempered glass for S21 has serious issue with fingerprint reader: the S23 Ultrasonic is GREATLY improved and work with all tempered glass i tryed (Cellularline, IMBZBK and Spigen)

I immediately went with Spigen, because I had good experience with their phone covers in the past.
It is strange that Amazon in your area doesn't sell these protectors.
I paid 18,89€ (currently available for 25€ -10%, probably because we finally are on the release time frame) on Amazon Germany.
Maybe I paid a Premium price for this one, but so far it did not dissapoint me.

Spigen case ruined my S20FE with many Micro scratches. Never Spigen again for me. And it's too expensive. If I had to chosen, Better try Ringke. Apparently same quality, same made in SK. Less pricy.
But I went with that case I said earlier and received it today and it's enough for now. 8€
I had so far no issues with cases from Spigen..
