Grainy display ? Is that normal ? - ASUS ROG Phone II Questions & Answers

Anyone noticied the display noise ? I don't know how to describe it but it's like a carton or something. Is that normal ?

There are a few people that have reported that here as well as YouTubers so I'd assume that's normal. It's like a bit grainy the display

Don't see anything like that on mine (8gb/128gb tencent model)

Ok thanks for the feedback. I just watched MKBHD review and he noticed the same so I think that's normal.

When do you see that carton like effect?
I mean, O watched MKBHD video too and the only strange thing he noticed about the display is when he used the in display fingerprint reader. While pressing the finger on it the screen gets brighter and granier.

When brightness is low and the backgroun is dark gray. It is not cartoon like effect. I just did not know what to call it in English.

You are welcome.

It's grainy on low brightness also has a black crush issue that's why the minimum brightness is high so the issue is not easily seen. If I use an app to put a dark overlay to lower the brightness then it becomes quite noticeable but during the day at normal brightness I won't notice it

I noticed on mine that whenever I lower the brightness, the gray color becomes a little bit red. And it also looks a bit grainy. I dont mind it though

Do you guys think there is a change for this for anyone on the Android 10 beta updates?
I have a grainy screen, I am running Beta 7
I hope this could be solved with a software update

Black Crush
There is a huge black crush on high brightness, I love watching movies and in dark scenes, it ruines my experience. I moved to ROG 2 from S7 and compared both displays, no black crush on S7. There is also display noise but the most annoying thing is black crush.
In lower brightness screen is too red, on higher brightness to much black crush, I don't know what to do. Next time I'm switching back to Samsung, they have excellent hardware and software optimization.
Right now I'm stuck with this bad display.

Hey Akhil
Was the issue resolved for you ?
I am facing same black crush with my Asus Rog 2

It's not going to be fixed guys especially now that rog3 is on the way.
I also have had
the grainy display (mostly noticeable on gray color in apps like x-plore dark mode.)
gray turning to red when below 40% brightness
most dark shades turn to pure black in lower brightness
and also that awful black crush. at first I thought the video quality was bad then I searched a bit and compared with an LCD and figured it's the display.
I mean how is it possible that the manufacturer doesnt test this stuff? We can literally see these issues from day 1 of using the device and they cant see it? They dont have even one person like us in their testing section or what?
It's just not acceptable.
I really love what Samsung is doing with oled, but rog2 has so many great features I just cant go for samsung.
I'll just wait to see what happens with rog3.
Hopefully someone will check all these issues first hand and let us know if they are still there.

Please HELP!!

Please check this out.
Today I took the calculator and this is what I see. (This is a photo taken from the screen issues thread. I couldnt get this on my camera but I just wanted to show you guys that this is exactly what I see.) These kinds of artifacts or whatever you may call it appears during video playback too. Everything else displays fine on my note. White is pure white, No tints, no hue changes, nothing. But I see these kinds of artifacts a lot and I have severe black clipping too.
Please help me out here. Those of you who are facing an exact same issue, please report here with a photo of your screen.

yep, send to samsung for repair
if you dont care for warrantee, try different kernel or rom altogether
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1715416
That's horrible!
Get it replaced.
How does it look like on ICS ?
Over all banding / clipping is reduced on ICS (even on stock firmware/kernel)
I guess something wrong with the screen is the same happening for all apps or just this one mate ?

I'm on ICS 4.0.3 latest Stock Indian DDLPA firmware. There is severe clipping for me when playing videos and these purple and greenish artifacts used to appear in dark videos too. I thought this was part of the black clipping issue but now when this shows up in calculator, it looks horrible.
Please note that the screen looks flawless otherwise. Whites are white, no tints, no lines, no hue changing, nothing. But view anything dark and these kinds of atrefacts seem to pop up.

But my question is, do you people have the Calculator app showing up like this? Is this a hardware defect? Its because I've seen some photos of screens which display the calculator this way and also screens which display a blue banding which seems to be a lot better compared to this.
the sad part is my screen is flawless when displaying other colours and even while browsing and as far as what I've seen, every screen seems to have some or the other issue which makes me scared to get the screen replaced. Here in India, we dont get the phone replaced. Only a part which is found to be defective is replaced.
I'm not sure if the banding you have happens to pretty much everyone else but I took a screenshot of my calculator app, and the 'banding' is there.

You got to take a photo not a screen-shot.
I have the same occurrence when I start the Calculator app. My device is a UK handset purchased from Amazon UK and it is currently running on CheckROM Revo NoteHD v5.
I suppose the 'issue' is not limited only to handsets in India.

It seems to appear only when I use the Calculator app. Should I perform any specific set of tests? If so, then please list them.
Thank you.
best would be to download different quality images with dark and bright ones and check for distortions when viewing full screen.
For movie issues, dark movies or clips on youtube can help. Getting clipping reduced see links above or do as is needed go to Samsung and complain for bad product

Hello satishp, I seem to have paid close attention to this 'issue' only after reading this thread you have initiated. Also, the only videos I have are the ones I recorded using the device itself and these were primarily done during daytime. I have not noticed any considerable peculiarity with images
Could you point me to specific images and videos as a reference point? Perhaps a video(s) you watched on YouTube or a specific movie and an image(s) you referred to from a website?
I can use these to test my device and report back quickly.

Search for the Iron Man trailer in Youtube. Check out the dark areas.
Even try watching any videos with a dark scene. You'll notice it.
You wont see any issues with bright videos with good lighting, Check out the dark ones.
And watch these in a preferably dark or dimly lit room.
I have seen 4 SGN's and all have this issue upto variable degrees. My first note had hue problems, my cousins note has moderate clipping. my 2nd note have clipping too. The note of service centre guy was almost perfect, although it also failed the gamma test. Since i cudnot sell my seal-packed note without taking huge losses, i opened it and stopped myself onion peeling it. Need to convince myself of the other gudness of it except the black clipping.

transfer to phone, check the differences, this might show some interesting stuff

Yeah, that's when the screen goes into super turbo boost mode lol.
When Automatic Brightness is turned On, the Galaxy Note 4 reaches an impressive 750 cd/m2 in High Ambient Light, where high Brightness is really needed – it is the brightest mobile display that we have ever tested. As a result of its high Brightness and low Reflectance, the Galaxy Note 4 has a Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light that ranges from 100 to156, the highest that we have ever measured for any mobile display.

And just so you might wonder why the screen is so dark lol
Super Dimming Mode
The Galaxy Note 4 also has a Super Dimming Mode that allows the Maximum Screen Brightness to be set all the way down to just 2 cd/m2 (nits) using the Brightness Slider. This is useful for working comfortably without eye strain or bothering others in very dark environments, or affecting the eye’s dark adaptation, such as when using a telescope. The display still delivers full 24-bit color and the picture quality remains excellent.

It is a Samsung feature with auto bright to allow the screen to be easier to read in sun. It was meant to be a feature anyway.

Happened to me today, but everything was still legible....looks crazy at first....thought my screen was talking a s***. But yes it is a feature that needs some tweaking, but apparently as long as auto brightness is Not selected it won't switch like that in bright sunlight. Looks kinda like a negative polarization effect with a bright wash.
And are ya switching phones or swapping for another note....because the "issue" will be on any note 4

Isn't that setting for auto brightness? I want it to adjust brightness from light to dark rooms. But I don't want super nuclear mode in the sunlight. Looks terrible. Was trying to shoot pictures the other day with the sun at my back and I wasn't sure if it was the camera acting up or the screen. Only after I took the pictures and reviewed them later (indoors) did I realize they were ok. They need to fix this.
I love this feature. If you hover your finger over anything it puts a shadow over it. Pretty tight imo
Im not the biggest fan of this, it makes everything look really weird, especially when your trying to film something or take a photo as its hard to see what its actually going to look like. But i guess it does make the screen more visible. FYI disabling auto adjust screen tone makes no difference

Contrast (true blacks)

How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the LG V20's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Definitely not a Note 7, which sets the standard for true blacks. I'll bet this screen is easier on the battery.

I'm going to disagree. The Note7 is a standard for "true black" because it is actually true black. An LED/OLED/AMOLED/etc display accomplishes black by simply shutting off an LED pixel, thus creating a 100% TRUE black. (Also, LED being off is using 0 energy).
LCD's on the other hand require backlighting, thus anytime the screen is on, the entire thing is lit. This is why no LCD will ever accomplish a 100% true black. It's also the reason why LCD's tend to be more of a battery hog because all pixels, even black ones, require lighting which requires energy.
To see the difference, put an AMOLED and LCD screen phone beside each other in a dark room and do a google image search for 000000, click one of the results and view it full screen. The AMOLED phone will appear to be off and the LCD phone will still be giving off light.

DING DING DING We have a winner!!!!
Note 4 Note 7 no difference for this discussion same AMOLED panel.
the LGv20 has a nice screen. very nice screen in fact (I now have one) it is not REMOTELY as good as my note 4 screen.
way way way to high a color temp on the panel. its damned near blue. not remotely white. when I use low warming it helps a little but not much. you get used to it but you really really notice in large areas of white.
the blacks are ok but again. horrid if you are used to an oled panel. I hope LG puts an oled panel in the V30 since I know they have the tech (their oled televisions are drop dead sexy alas way way outside of anything remotely in my budget)
what helps is that it has the 1440p panel. this really is the ideal resolution for a 5.5 to 6 inch panel where 1080p is just lacking noticeably. you adjust to the high temperature you don't adjust to low resolution.
sadly so far the camera is crap at night. grrr. was hoping for better. have not really tested in in daytime yet though I expect it will be fine.

So turn down the blue. Nougat lets you.
Hmm.. Coming from a note 7... The 7 still has a better screen.. But increase brightness to 60 and up and it looks really great. Can't complain.
Yeah the blacks cant compare to my note 4 but at least the viewing angle is good enough. Dont notice any colour shift at any reasonable angle.

There's already a thread all about it
It's not much of a thread tbh. I've just read it.
Amoled vs LCD. Note 4 vs V20. You win some you lose some. Having come from Amoled screens (Nexus 6, Note 4, etc) you get spoiled by blacks. However, the colors on the V20 are fantastic. I am a weekend pro photographer and can tell you I feel the V20 is way more natural than the over saturated colors of an Amoled screen. Also viewing angles on the V20 maintain colors while the Note 4 does not.
But back to black levels. This is good for an LCD screen and turning off the top display improves it a lot. The black level is good but it is a dark grey. But when you watch Netflix etc in the dark it is not bad at all. Not Amoled good but definitely not bad.
OK so having done some more watching with the lights totally off, I can say this is a disaster in terms of black levels. I watched 10 minutes of Lord Of The Rings and pretty much stopped.

Yes that dose look odd. If you have a screen protector on it could possibly be that but you will have to lift it to check. Or it could be the oleophobic coating on the screen wearing away. If it's that contact Samsung.

No screen protector. And definitely not the coating. It's image processing. Like I said, it disappears when I switch to FHD+ resolution. When I swipe up to open the lock screen or even the app drawer I can see frames shifting. I haven't tried all colors but it's remarkably noticeable on dark grey shades all the way to pitch black wallpapers (including Samsung default ones). I contacted Samsung and they are yet to reply.

I did. A couple of remarkable findings (I'm no expert though). 1. In the DPI Scaling test, X & Y didn't match at equal percentages (i.e. at 150% X read 777.77, while Y read 783.77). 2. In the Gamma test the grey scale in particular wasn't accurate at all (instead of matching at 2.2 it was more of 2.5 and 2.6). One final unrelated remark: the screen doesn't support wide colors gamut. I don't know if that is the norm with all Note 9 units.
Same ,the wide gamut wasn't working for me either. Also my dpi was...View attachment 4607101

Any thoughts, then?

Display panel defects

Having the phone for over 3 weeks now and I've noticed in very low brightness (1-10%) that display is unevenly lit. Dark gradient on the right side. Visible especially if your view a dark grey solid colour.
Is this an OLED issue or do I have a defective panel?

This is something related to DC dimming feature. Try disabling DC Dimming option in Display setting and check if you notice any difference.
I experience the exact same issue... on my Pixel 3a XL.
Came here because I'm evaluating a new purchase, and the first post I read is about this problem.
Meh!

I've tried that before posting here and it's still there. It's apparent when you use at night. Day time practically imperceptible.

I think since these are budget devices (relatively) with amoled screens they cut corners in QCC.

Strange!
I only experience the exact same problem but only when the DC dimming is on, otherwise everything is fine even on the lowest brightness. (except ofcourse the smearing issue when scrolling through dark background on low brightness)

If it's any consolation then even the one plus 7 (just checked my friend's) has the same issue. The notch also affects screen around it.
I have this on my 9TP. Only visable at very low brightness in a dark room and grey background.
Looks like a piece of tape what's folded up. Poor QC but it doesn't bother me.

As mentioned in the article, it's normal. Hope this settles everything.
compared my K20 with another
Tested my Redmi K20 with another K20 and found that only my device has uneven brightness on left side of panel. Red many threads that its common flaw among AMOLEDS but there isn't any stat what % of AMOLEDS. Moreover didn't find any clue why this happen in first place.
My device shows visible uneven grey at 10~15 % brightness.
