Dual Screen Settings and Advanced Tweaking - LG V50 ThinQ Accessories

I've been playing around with some of the settings regarding the Korean Model's Dual Screen. This Thread is just meant to discuss what I've found.
Dual Home Launcher:
The Dual Screen has its own launcher, to which the Dual Screen will always return when the "Home" button is taped on the Dual Screen. There is no option to set a "Default Launcher" for the Dual Screen. Of the standard launcher options preinstalled on the main device, the Dual Home Launcher most closely resembles the "Home & App Drawer" launcher, but is its own environment.
The Dual Screen can load a different launcher as you would load a typical app, but the home button will always take your back to the Dual Home Launcher. A different launcher can be assigned as the "Dual App" (the app that automatically loads whenever the dual screen is turned on) but again, the home button will still take your back to the Dual Home Launcher. Additionally, when a "Dual App" is assigned, they Dual App will automatically be brought to the forefront whenever the device is brought back from "screen off", opened from a closed state, or returned from the 360° opened, second screen off position. Basically, using a Dual App is an annoying option, and it doesn't work to assign a different launcher for the dual screen anyways.
I have discovered that is possible to open the Dual Home Launcher on the main screen. To do it, you need Nova Launcher or Action Launcher on your system, or a similar Launcher that adds an "activities" widget. In the activities widget's apps list, you will find the Dual Home Launcher as as n app, and the primary launcher activity can be used to bring it up on the primary screen. As usual, if you got home on the dual screen, it just moves the application over to that screen.
I'm interested in testing with the disabling of the Dual Home Launcher App, per this method: https://www-xda--developers-com.cdn...ers.com/disable-system-app-bloatware-android/, but I have no idea what it would do. Too bad I can't make a TWRP backup first. I'm also interested in the idea of spoofing the app's name in the system to make the device think that a third party launcher is the Dual Home Launcher and basically set THAT launcher as the default Dual Screen launcher. In particular, I think Lucid Launcher, AIO Launcher, or WX Launcher would be good Default Dual Screen Launchers, per my tastes, but I think having Lawnchair on the Dual Screen next to Nova Prime would probably be a popular setup.
Tasker:
The App Tasker has had zero efforts in it's development for dual screen compatibility, as far as I can tell. Events triggered to bring up apps or things like that will have their action committed on whichever screen is active at the time, basically, whichever screen you've used last.
To demonstrate what I mean, as a test, I've loaded up a simple "torch" app on both screens that has one function, a single tap on the screen will make the screen change from white to Black, or black to White. If you tap the second screen, it changes, then you tap the primary screen, "nothing" happens and it requires a second tap to change the color is the main screen. Then, tap the second screen again, and it takes two taps to cause the app's function. When you are using one screen, your first touch on the other screen doesn't activate anything, just changes the focus of the device to that screen, whereupon you can begin making touch inputs on that screen. The screen that you're on, that you've used last, is your active screen. This is the screen that Tasker will commit actions on, regardless of which environment triggers the event. There is no option in the Tasker Dialogues to choose which screen something will target. I haven't experimented with it much at this time, but I'm certain that this could cause bugs and failed triggers if you have triggers try to target an environment in which an app that would be expected to be forefront is not there. I haven't experimented much yet, but I've been attempting to make contact with the Developers of Tasker, to add a screen targetting plugin, and to add "Secondary Display on", "Secondary Display off", and "Secondary Display Load App" as selectable event triggers. I've been on the Tasker Forums, and someone recommended I explore the methods on here: https://forum.joaoapps.com/index.ph...ings-to-use-in-autotools-secure-settings.210/ to try and find the variables for Secondary Display On/Off at least, and I'm hopeful that there might be a way to shift focus to one screen or the other as part of a series of actions, which would allow an app to be loaded on a specific screen. I'm interested to see what can be done in this regard.
"Island" App:
The App "island" is a very interesting project that is still under development. When you install it, it requests the permissions and then takes you through the setup of a "Work" App Environment, and installs to it another copy of the Google Play Store. Basically, this Play Store is the same as your normal Play Store, and should be linked up to the same Google Account. The App's icon gets a little Briefcase on it to signify that it's a Work app, and you have to set up a second Pin, Knock Code or Password for it (I'm not sure if this can be the same it not. I made mine different). When you load it, it asks for the code, and then opens a normal looking play store, except none of your apps are downloaded yet. Any app that you download with this play store get that same little Briefcase icon, and exist as "Work" apps, which basically lets you install two copies of any app.
Some limitations: any Launchers that you attempt to download within the Work Environment will only include Work Environment Apps within their app drawers. Normal, or "personal" environment Launchers, however, DO show Work Environment Apps next to their regular, "Personal" Environment counterparts. "Work" Launchers do not appear in the "default launcher selection" dialogues. Widget's are funky too. Work Environment Apps that have widgets do not have them become available universally, the way that normal apps do. Work Environment Launchers with widgets, for instance, can only load those widgets within that launcher. Basically, "Work" dual loaded Launchers just aren't a great idea.
Island also adds another APK installer, do you can install any downloaded apk in the work environment. I haven't tested installing an alternative app store in the work environment, but I would imagine that one would still install apps from it into the Work Environment as well. Untested theory though.
Using island, you can load to copies of, say, social media apps, and then have both apps running at the same time, one on one display, the other on the other, whereas, normally trying this would just cause the app to jump over to that screen, rather than dual booting. In most cases, you can log in the same account, or a different account, on the two screens. Be actively watching two different Discord servers on your device, from one single account, for instance, if you'd like.
Island is a little funky in certain regards, as it's still in development, but I've gotta say, it works very well at this point. And it basically makes every app in existence dual screen compatible.
I haven't tried installing a Qslide app in the Work Environment yet. I'm intrigued, now that I'm thinking about it.
Shoot, I've written a serious mini novel here. I guess I'll stick a bookmark in it here for now. I'll keep this Thread up to date on what I've discovered though. I've got a few avenues that I want to explore.

Hi,
That's a fascinating piece, especially as Sky Go in the UK, won't play for me on the V50.
There is a theory that as it's effectively casting to the second screen Sky Go blocks the TV content.
Of course it may just be an Android 9 system issue?
Still working on exactly what's going on.
I have taken the V50 out off the Dual screen case but it makes no difference.
The island app may possibly be another avenue to pursue.
Any advice or comment would be most welcome.
Again a most interesting post.

There are no pins on the rear of the US model to use dual screen or the coordinating case. Only over seas models. We're outta luck.

Can you search 'dual screen' on setting?

Search dual screen in settings
No, but you can find the options relating to the dual screen feature by using a shortcut app to find the hidden options, and create a home screen shortcut if necessary. Idk what you can use em for, but they are buried in the system somewhere.

WHOA, the v50 can have a dual screen? Where can I find it?
I thought only the v60 could.
Please let me know if I'm reading this correctly!

I have a model I bought off ebag that says its an LG V50, V450VM. I updated it over the air on verizon and the multiple updates went though no problem, the box was all in Chinese for the most part, says made in china and it has the 3 pogo pin connection on the back of the case. Will the second screen work with this model, whatever the hell it really is? It seems to work just fine on Verizon and like I said, it updated flawlessly.

PS : if the dualscreen is not working due to V450VM ROM maybe you can use LG UP do flash a V500N ROM ... hopefully the "bands" are compatible with verizon ... also you may ask on reddit or telegram : https://android.fandom.com/wiki/V50_ThinQ ...

Hi Pierro, so I have my second screen with the pogo pins in it now. It sadly does not seem to work with Verizon, when I snap the phone into it, I get nothing. Perhaps I will try flashing a different software on it as you suggested......

Here's the only reliable way I could find to do it. It's a tiny bit quirky but it works great.
LG Dual Screen Launcher
I have an idea You can try installing some launchers (like Niagara for example) And then set it to launch the app launcher automatically when opening the dual screen. Hope it works for you

[Q] Linux like workspace switcher/screen splitter

I wanted to know since the tab has a screen that is 3x as big as a Galaxy S (3 phones put side by side on the tab) is there an app or a home launcher or something that will allow me to have multiple things running on different screens.
For example, I need to take information from one document and organize with another and I can easily switch between them on Windows and Linux.
I then need to tag along to other places and want to continue to edit both documents on my tab, I have to keep opening one document then remember a sentence or piece of information for a second and close that document and open the second one to continue typing it up.
It is a real hassle and very time consuming and frustrating. Our tabs are pretty big and I would like to utilize it to the fullest of its capabilities as a tablet/big smartphone.
What my suggestion is if anyone feels like making an app that I can do just this and more on my tab, they couod design an app that works like the home screen.
For instance you open a document, email, or webpage and want to look at another document or note you made for yourself or another email. All you do is swipe to the left or right and it is a clear home screen or something to that effect or maybe a list of documents, notes, emails, webpages you can open. You then choose/open what you need and can continue with the first page having the second one open for reference or whatever the case may be.
You can then easily switch between the 2 or however many pages you have opened just by swiping the screen just like you would your homescreen.
If someone knows of such an app or had the resources to make one please let me know.
Also this would make for a great multi-tasking app if made correctly.
What might be an issue here is that most programs themselves are going to detect the loss of focus and handle things. Either saving/reverting to front screen/closing down completely, or leaving things up and running.
I can see what you're after, more a 'cards' type thing, and it might be possible, but you'd have to override what the OS is sending to the apps (don't send the lose focus thing), or get the apps to handle things differently.
Either going to be impossible, or trivial. And even if it was possible to be hacked, apps are going to be assuming their running and might use more power. The way it works at the moment is to assume you're being shut down, and handle that gracefully so you're using minimal resources on a phone.
If one were to change how android handles the multi-tasking, would this sort of app be possible?
Another question is, are there any document editors that can do something like this?
I have an iPod Touch and an app named iFile, and it has multi-window type thing that I am describing where I can open many pages and view many documents at a time.
That's the main thing I want it for, editing documents without having to open and close constantly.
I was thinking of this the other day. This would be something you'd have to build into a ROM. It'd be a nice mod, and since Android already takes screenshots for the recent apps bar, it wouldn't be too hard to implement once the source is released. My thought is it would be a four or five finger gesture left or right. It could possibly zoom out similar to how the screens zoom when you drag an icon on the launcher so that the other tasks could be visible at the same time. The normal activity lifecycle would continue as usual (i.e. onPause() would be called as soon as the gesture starts, and onStop() once the activity is off the screen). A screenshot would be used in place of the actual Activity until the gesture is over (meaning the Activity has "snapped" into place).

Your thoughts on Android 5.0?

So the finial version has come out. Im sure a lot of you guys have updated to it. Plus a lot of you have been using the Dev version along the way.
What are your guys thoughts?
I like the the new version but also there are still tons of things are are bugging the *poop* out of me.
I thought this was going to be "THE" version that appeased almost all android fans. Fixed a lot the issues since 2.3 while bringing a lot of new features.
1st the things i dont like.
1. Battery % WHY THE *heck* do we still not have an option to turn on a battery % next to the battery icon?????!!!!!!!
2. Hangouts picture (when syncing with FB) not always showing up bug is still present.
3. I like the new light colors with white and grey but why did they choose that color of teal. Im not super excited about that but i do like the white backgrounds.
4. Multitask menu. I dont like how EVERYTHING is in there. And why do we STILL NOT HAVE A CLEAR ALL
5. Google Now launcher. I like it and dont like it. Dont like how everything is so big and dont like how i cant have the middle space be my default. But Nova fixed that. Plus im rooted so i changed my DPI
6. Battery life. Ive only used it for 1 day (going on 1 day) but it seems my battery life is worse then on 4.4.4
7. Battery menu. Dont like anything about it.
Things i do like.
1. Material design (in most places) animations and universal layout for apps is nice.
2. Lockscreen notifications although i dont like how EVERYTHING is on there but im still messing with the menu for this feature.
Im still playing with it and im sure it will get better as apps update (what took them so long) but over all im kinda disappointed with the amount of hype 5.0 got.
Same here, like it but meh it's not there yet, hoping for apps updates etc. And my battery life is slightly worse too
I like it so far, but smart lock seems buggy as hell. I've got my Moto 360 set up as a trusted device, and even went so far as to set up face unlock, and still, I'm prompted for a passcode more often than not. There really needs to be a rescan option -- or, better yet, just make it work like it's supposed to.
Battery life seems worse for me too but I will give it another few days before really making that decision
Make sure you turn WiFi always scanning off. I am getting better than the Dev preview because of the fixed WiFi drain bug. I like it though.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
You cant know anything about battery one day after update, after update system still need some time to "sit on place" and its drains battery.
Where is material design music. Sadly it doesn't animate when I press the play button. I really like what was was shown in the demo .

I have my moto 360 set up as a trusted device and I never need to unlock my phone. Only on reboot. rest of the time works perfectly.
Im not using face unlock though.
hmmm...
i don't like how you'not able to delete multiple contacts + separation of the phone numbers from the emails.
photos app gather all the jpg files that are in the sdcard which kinda sucks (dude, i don't need my album art in my photo gallery.) + you need Google+ enabled to be able to just look at the photos.
multitask is OMG.... really really nice effect but damn, is there any real need to "mark" every menu page i open? (oh, where's the "clear all" button?)
camera is ok but there is no 0.03 seconds of the new API. pictures are taken as slow as before.
material design is not bad but it shines on multiple layers only.
keyboard is really cool looking and although it'll take some time to get used to "button-less buttons" i do like it.
and battery, well, i can't say since it's only 1 day of use.
still, i think it's going to be ok (i still hate those wakelocks though... ) and last but not least, Chrome... i still miss "text wrapping" that's why i use Opera
all in all, i don't hate it, i'm not thrilled about it but i'm sure it'll "grow on me".
UI looks definitely great, performance and battery haven't improved, nor got worse. But it's too early to comment on that.
No toggle in quick settings to cycle through sound modes(sound/silent,vibrate), dafuq Google? I'm certainly missing Xposed.
very annoyed about the removal of the stock email app, i dont want to comingle gmail and my work stuff.

I really like having all my emails in gmail app. First day of use, I'm going to get 4hrs sot without messing with settings. It runs really smooth with hells kernel. I would like the pull downs yo have more options, but all in all, I'm happy.

I haven't had to enter my PIN once since I set up smart lock with my 360 and face yesterday. Works great!
You can't use the Photos app if you disable the Google+ app. So.... now I have to open the camera app and scroll through my pictures one by one to view them. Super!
I kinda don't like it.
1: The color scheme is not consistent throughout, which really irritates me. While you spend most of your time in a launcher (I use Nova pesonally) or in apps, some of those apps are system apps, and it seems like almost all of them have had color changes, they don't look good and don't even make sense.
2: Some of the features are cool, and even sound great...but they are commonly riddled with "omg, no way!" points of frustration. Smart-lock...would be AWESOME if it would just freaking work when connected to a specific wifi network! For example...in prior versions I had used tasker and secure settings to disable the lock screen and have a significantly longer screen timeout whenever I was connected to my home wifi. Tasker works just fine for the other things I use it for, such as reading my text messages outloud...but only when I'm connected to my home wifi or headphones. But the pin lock errors out, every single time. Root works, tasker and secure settings are configured exactly as they were before, and they both even have administrative rights. It still fails every time, and I get the toast message pop up. I wonder if it is because Google is worried that your neighbor might name their wifi network to the same as yours is, and have it be an open network so when they steal your phone they would automatically be able to get into it. If that is the case...well, that should be easy to fix, one make the service only work with password protected networks, and I'm also sure they could just only have it work when the network name is also reporting the same mac address. But I digress.
3: Lightflow. Ugh, enough said. You might say this is not a lollipop specific thing, but the guy posted an inquiry on this on the support thread since it was an complication with the new notification system, and they responded back saying they fixed it, and it has still not been pushed out by Google yet!
4: I find myself unable to quickly remove notifications from the lock screen and even when the phone is unlocked in some instances. For example, if I am copying lots of individual files over wifi from my computer, and there are multiple "copied" notifications as a result, the first few can be swiped away, but the rest can't! I have to click on them, and then close it. Kinda annoying.
5: One of the only reasons why I really wanted Lollipop were for the improvements to the lockscreen notifications. I envisioned being able to stop using dashclock entirely, and also having an all around easier time with notifications while the phone was locked. Nope! Sure, the basic functionality is good, I can read text messages without an app for it, and that's great...but I have to say I really miss having the unlock ability from just turning the phone on and swiping. Now I have to turn the phone on, press the padlock to get the phone to switch to the pattern lock, then do the pattern lock. That extra step is really quite annoying for me. I'd prefer to have the "extra step" be to SEE THE NOTIFICATIONS. You know, just like how it used to be with dashclock. (You would know you had a notification by the little icon right next to the time and you would swipe down from there to read them) Maybe I'm crazy, but I unlock my phone a lot more often than I have notifications to read. Especially since I can't get the pinlock automatic toggle to work when I am connected to my home wifi!
6: Most lock screen icons are blocked...and for good reason. But some of them are not. For example, in power toggles I have always used an icon that automatically makes a 14 minute timer, and another one for 29 minutes. I use this for my breaks at work of course. (The icon triggers a task in the "Trigger" app that does this) This works from the lockscreen...which sounds great because I can set that timer without having to unlock my phone...but it has also been deactivated by mistake when the phone was in my pocket. Ugh!
7: I don't like the "swipe down" from either the lock screen or from notifications bar option. A lot of this is because I am really used to using powertoggles for this, and this duplicates a lot of that functionality, but
I knew this was going to happen, I have been complaining about software "improvements" at work for the last year and a half. If something is working, don't break it!

Yeah, I've figured out the issue. I use "Gravity Screen" to shut my device down when I put it in my pocket. It seems that if Gravity Screen puts the device into standby, it also locks the screen in such a way that Smart Lock is disabled. Since that's normally how I shut off my device, I was seeing this almost every time. I'm hoping that the dev can fix this, because I'm really not used to touching my power button.
On another note. I wouldn't mind the email integration with Gmail, except that there's no way to label my various Exchange accounts. I have two separate Exchange accounts that I must monitor, and both simply show as a random-colored circle with a letter "J" (which is the first letter of each email address). I can't even change the color to something that would help distinguish the accounts. I just have to remember that random-color-J #1 equals one account, and random-color-J #2 equals another. It's very annoying. A combined inbox certainly wouldn't hurt, either.

Gear VR Development Tips & Tricks

If you've been to the official forums, you may know it's mostly questions about when updates are coming or how to fix a specific crash. There is a lot of useful information floating around, but very little open development on / for it. These are some of the tips and tricks that have either been posted and updated, forced out of Oculus, or generated through personal testing.
Adding your own oculussig file to an apk:
Obtain your device ID by connecting the Note 4 and using "adb devices"
Enter the number into the form at https://developer.oculus.com/tools/debug/
Download https://mega.co.nz/#!ssB0ALwR!dLKy0OUv7H7aGZQ1YiqXKfDgUc3fnOIghCiEFAFtt4g
Extract the zip and copy the game and signature file into the extracted folder
Run the command to repack for your computer platform (available in USAGE.txt)
Running any app as vr_dual (without Oculus Home):
Install any Gear VR app with your device signature (app can downloaded, compiled, or backed up from an official install)
Go to your device Settings -> Application manager -> Gear VR Service (usually in the "Downloaded" section but could also be in the "All" section).
Tap on "Manage storage"
Tap the "VR Service Version" number six times.
Wait for scan process to complete and you should now see the Developer Mode toggle on this screen.
You should now be able to launch your app without the headset and also dock the headset at any time without having Home launch.
Don't forget to disable developer mode to restore regular functionality after you're done playing the game and enable it again before returning.
Unity game development shortcuts:
So you need a bunch of characters and environments, but the Unity asset store is expensive and you haven't had enough experience in 3DSMax to make your own. There is another way to get tons of content both fast and cheap:
MMD4Mecanim : http://stereoarts.jp/
mmd-for-unity: https://github.com/mmd-for-unity-proj/mmd-for-unity
UnityXNA: https://github.com/mvi/UnityXNA
MMD4Mecanim and mmd-for-unity are extremely similar. The difference between them is that MMD4Mecanim adds the necessary plugins to Unity (and the platforms you build against) to allow you to use models and motions that it converts, while mmd-for-unity performs a fairly complete conversion that allows you to use the items as Unity components with minimal scripts to control some of the aspects that don't fully convert. It is personal preference which is used. When building a scene that is mostly MMD, it is probably better to use MMD4Mecanim. When attempting to mix MMD into a scene built primarily with Unity, mmd-for-unity is probably a better choice.
There is a quick overview of how mmd-for-unity works available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSC2hKaG5AA
Many developers using the Gear VR favor MMD4Mecanim because of the other plugins that have been built on top of it, such as lip sync. In terms of game performance, mmd-for-unity may have a slight advantage due to decreased overhead. It is unnoticeable, though.

Don't worry, I am bringing over all of the stuff I put together from the Oculus forums and personal testing.
I am going to put together a small folder on Mega with tools and some samples.
Thank you so much for starting this thread. Great idea and hopefully I'll learn a lot. One question when i try and enable developer mode after the scan I get the message "you are not a developer" and it closes

My professor had the same issue. He had to reboot and wait a minute, then go in and try it again. It could also be how fast the clicks are. I know he wasn't rooted and didn't do anything other than reboot. When I did it, I tapped fast.

You could also try clearing data for the service, then open Home, then try. When they were setting up, they clicked around but didn't really say what they did. I was in a video conference with like 7 people trying to tell one lol.
What I know for sure was it didn't require root or any additional apps.
I just found a Miku archive with some 1,000 models... Looks like it's time to make a Unity orgy. Speaking of, I should post the Miku to Unity stuff. It's a cheap way to get models and they work with the new animations.
Moved to post 2
Same issue for me, keeps telling me I'm not a developer. Tried multiple data clears and restarts.

That's odd. I just noticed mine was cleared out after doing the last update and I activated and enabled it just now.
Edit: I think I figured out what's happening. It works for me because I have my own game with my signature installed. It didn't take any special app for the other tests because their copy of my game had their signature and I bet they installed it between attempts.
I think you have to have any VR app that contains your own signature installed to "qualify" as a developer. I updated the instructions to include that step.
This is what I was suspecting but hoped I was wrong. I don't have the money for the gear VR right now and hoped to try some things out with an stm32fdiscovery board instead. I suppose now I'll have to compile something with my signature in it.
I didn't realize there actually was a small section for the Gear VR, so we moved over there.
There are some video conversion tips on the official forums. I haven't tried them, but I'll try to gather up what I can and add it here.
We need more positive, productive threads in this section....
I am moving all of the content from a few other threads here, since the Gear VR section has a bit of a troll problem.
One possible way to improve the range of focus / clarity when using the Gear VR:
I found this trick while trying to figure out why no adjustment to the Durovis Dive (moveable lenses) seemed as clear as I expected. The solution was to move where the headset sat on my face, despite it not feeling like that was the "intended placement"
Whether or not you use the nose piece is up to you. I honestly never took the time to compare the two foam blobs, so whichever is the default is the one I use. Most of the trick involves using the tension of the top headband, so adjust the one that wraps around your head to wherever it is tight, but still comfortable.
The next part is where it varies by user. You will want to put the headset on and adjust the focus wheel to get as clear as possible for you. After you are comfortable with the view and about to come back here and say WTF, hold the headset by both sides and move it slightly higher on your face. If the view gets clearer, adjust the top band to keep it locked in place. If there is no change, try moving it lower on your face, and again adjust as needed.
While this may not fit into a scientific explanation of pixel depth, it is a rather simple concept. By moving the headset up or down, you actually slightly alter the angle in relation to your eyes. Most games and apps are intended for a view "level to the eye" and when the headset is too low, your nose can cause it to angle slightly downward. When it is too high, the upward tilt can cause your eyes to strain a bit more.
Hopefully that can help some to solve their issue with clarity before running off to cut up or pack in any additional parts.
I have been meaning to bring over a lot of other stuff from the Oculus forums, but I got wrapped up in having them delete my account.
It appears that some people feel the need to respond to every single thread with public service announcements. Whether or not that is the reason this section has all of 5 active threads and if that led to the Oculus Gear VR section being flooded with the same nonsense cannot be proven without a massive survey. All I can say for sure is that the development sections are safe and hopefully this being a development thread means it is, as well.
Anyway, as for that stuff I was going to bring over:
Controller Mapping by Drash (https://forums.oculus.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=20070)
In my Unity apps I use an input layer that requires me to map from an HID to a set of button mappings, and then the rest of my app just deals with with the device-agnostic things like Left Bumper, Start Button, etc. I know a lot of developers out there do something similar, and a few of the third-party input solutions do this as well. There's only one gotcha -- developers are responsible for ensuring setting up button mappings (or profiles) for a reasonable variety of controllers.
As far as I can tell, the most-used controller on Gear VR is the Samsung EI-GP20 Gamepad that optionally comes bundled with the Gear VR. That's good news for the developers that so far aimed to support that at a minimum, but as far as I can tell is a variety of other semi-popular gamepads in use as well:
Moga Pro Power
Moga Hero
PS3 Controller
Gamestop Gamepad
Moga Pro
Steelseries Free
ipega (I think there's a few different versions, not sure which ones people actually use)
So far, I've ordered and tested 6 different controllers now for both the desktop and for Android, and this helps because most of their mappings vary, but this is clearly not a future-proof way to go. Am I going to have to keep buying every controller to find out their HID and mappings? So until I take a different approach, at the very least I would like to throw out there some of the button mappings I've picked up from testing physical controllers, and perhaps others could do the same?

1.
"Gamestop Gamepad" aka "Red Samurai Wireless Controller for Android Tablets". I heard this cheap gamepad mentioned several times lately. Dirt cheap. And yet it feels great in the hand and all buttons feel very usable. Solid choice. It has two modes, one that seems to send keyboard commands, and one that actually acts as a normal bluetooth gamepad (Mode G).
Here are the button mappings for Mode G.
HID: "GS gamepad"
Button 1 - Button 0
Button 2 - Button 1
Button 3 - Button 2
Button 4 - Button 3
Left Bumper - Button 4
Right Bumper - Button 5
Left Trigger - Button 6
Right Trigger - Button 7
Left Stick Button - Button 8
Right Stick Button - Button 9
Start - Button 10 (says "Enter" on the controller)
Select/Back - Button 11 (says "Escape" on the controller)
Left Stick X - Analog 0
Left Stick Y - Analog 1
Right Stick X - Analog 2
Right Stick Y - Analog 3
Dpad Left/Right - Analog 4
Dpad Up/Down - Analog 5
----
2.
Moga Pro Power - This one holds a charge that you can use to recharge your Android device. Very nice controller, quality is top-notch, but pretty expensive. Also has two modes, one that is specific to Moga games, and one where it acts as a normal gamepad (Mode B).
Here are the button mappings for Mode B:
HID: "Moga Pro 2 HID"
The button mappings are exactly the same as the Gamestop Gamepad, except that the visual labels for the Start/Select buttons actually say Start and Select, and it doesn't seem like the Select button works in HID mode. Not 100% sure about this.
----
NOTE: The Samsung Gamepad does not have triggers, nor does it have stick buttons (pushing in the thumbsticks), so you may want to keep that in mind when designing a control scheme with wide gamepad support.

Hi! Thanks for posting this! I followed the instructions here, successfully installed a signed apk (one that wasn't on the phone previously), then turned on dev mode as described through the tapping and switch. Nothing seemed to have changed. I then toggled dev mode on and off (via the switch) and restarted the phone several times each. However, I still get the Oculus Home launching every time I insert the phone into the Gear VR as if nothing changed. I'm on the T-mobile US ROM and device, and I don't have the 5.0 upgrade yet. No root.
Does anyone have any ideas? I want to run cardboard apps in my Gear ! Thanks!

If nothing is running, it will launch home.
There is also a possibility it only works for Gear VR apps. In that case, you could just disable the whole Gear VR service temporarily.
Either way, you don't really need to quote the OP to ask. It's implied.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to violate posting etiquette, I didn't realize I had quoted that entire post - I will trim it down if I can find edit (I am new to posting here, so forgive me).
I have FPSE or any other cardboard app running, and gear home still pops up over it when docked to the usb port of the gear vr. I can't freeze Gear VR service without root, which I'm looking in to as the next best option I suppose. Force stopping it doesn't seem to work either. Reports on Reddit threads indicate this works with Cardboard apps, allowing them to run without home launching, but not for me.

Does anyone know how to password protect Nova Launcher settings?

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. In fact, this is my very first post here. I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of a way to lock the settings of Nova Launcher? I've tried a number of circumventing attempts to try and do this very thing. I find it incredibly difficult to fathom that the dev of such a great launcher, has never incorporated this option in the app. Especially since, one would think it an important part of such an app, since if you screen unlock your device for someone to use, then unbeknownst to you, they either intentionally or inadvertently, change your Nova settings.
I tried using a few different app locks out there, and despite Nova Settings widget sitting in the drawer, those app locks don't recognise the widget as a seperate entity in the list of apps to lock, that they bring up, from your device. Instead, only the Nova Launcher widget itself shows. But if I select it, any app lock will just lock the whole launcher and I need to unlock the launcher every single time I do anything on it. And that is tediously annoying!
I know that the dev was away on personal matters for a long while in the past and subsequently had not worked on updates for that time. He had responded to my inquiry about this several months back citing that he may include settings password protection in the future.
I have a Samsung GS4 dual sim. It is rooted, and I have Xposed Framework and several working modules on the phone. My apologies if this post is too long. I'm new and will aim to keep queries shorter in future.
been years used nova launcher and never found something like password protected, only found lock desktop. maybe you can email dev to add this features

I too am looking for the answer to the above question, but i guess there is none .

is this a keylogger or other spyware?

Noticing that sometimes my screen doesn't respond on the homepage but if i hit home it looks like an overlay shrinks down to bottom of screen and ibsee the home screen again, then it works. Recent change, no new apps installed. Malwarebytes says no suspicious packages.
Noticing same thibg w fingerprint reader too. Doesn't wotk. Close app, reopen and now works.
Almost like something sitting on top of the android interface.

Hard to imagine without a visual...Are you on stock firmware or a custom rom? Any mods installed?
Screenshot, please.
Thx guys. Cant screenshot b/c nothing works except home button.
Stock not rooted at&t
Do you have a friend with a phone camera?
I'd take your device to either a Samsung Service Center or back to the retailer for a replacement unit if possible. As there is a chance that you were sold a faulty unit.

Can you get into recovery or download mode? I would try a factory reset or flash stock firmware with Odin to rule out firmware/software issues first.
Check which apps have permission to draw over the screen, also try see if it happens in safe mode.
Thanks, where do i check that? Under app permissions there is no draw over screen
3dots-Special access-Apps that can appear on top
Well, are there other options for defining a keylogger or not? I am almost sure that a huge number of manufacturers initially integrates various keyloggers into their programs, especially for software manufacturers under MAC. No wonder, but sometimes it’s really worth it, only if you use this application exactly as you should. In any case, I don’t think it’s a toy, it’s illegal, the main thing is to coordinate it, like this application https://www.refog.com/, it’s convenient because you install it yourself and are responsible for it.

No one really has an idea. For all you know, all the custom ROM developers in XDA could be inserting keyloggers into the ROMs and no one would notice. Normally such keyloggers are required to be enable in 'Accessibility' in Settings; however most developers here could easily integrate it into the system and name it to be something less malicious. i.e. "qualcommaptlog", "Audiolog".
I'm just blindly making accusations. But I expect that this topic should be discussed widely among developers.
If my comment here gets deleted or this thread gets closed.. I'm going to assume that my accusations above are correct.
