MI 9 locked to Vodafone - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

Hey guys
I was wondering if I am able to unlock the bootloader of this phone and flash Xiaomi EU Rom but I am on locked Vodafone network so I am not sure if I will be able to do this because something might go wrong. If anyone has any knowledge on this subject can you please help me out

In a telegram Mi 9 Group I read that someone was in the same situation and he open the bootloader and flashed via Mi Flash a global rom and lock the bootloader successfully without problem.
Do you have telegram app? Search Xiaomi Mi 9 - Espanol on it, and ask there about what did you want to do.

How do you know you are locked on Vodafone? Mine wasn't network locked

Not every phone under contract is locked, if you have a spare SIM from another network it may be worth checking.
Either way - I suspect you won't have any issues. The part of your phone that ROMs are flashed to is on a separate chip to where the network lock is configured AFAIK.

Thanks for your help I shall give this a try
Edit: you were correct sir I tried a sim from a different carrier and it worked perfectly

A dual sim phone is never locked to a specific carrier. You may get some that are "branded", so they have a bit of carrier specific bloat that can be uninstalled, but they never come locked.

I did to v 9 something. Using the mi flash tool or whatever it's called (not at my pc now). That also unlocked the dual sim as the 2nd slot didn't work before.

Mi9 china version to global???

I have ordered the Explorer version, which is not there yet, come the days. Has anyone experienced what it looks like with a global version, so to install it? with locked bootloader? Am now back to miui for years and have lost something the overview. Will of course open the bootloader, but that always takes a bit
Congratulation for your Explorer Edition.
you can switch from china to global with unlocked bootloader (after 300 hours) but you should not lock the bootloader back after flashing, this will brick your device.
2nd disadvantage of these chinese edition is lack of LTE band 20.
If you are a european user this will have negative impact of your mobile coverage because most of our mobile phone providers use this band.
I would also like to have had the explorer edition but lack of Band 20 isn't a compromise for me.
yes thank you for the info, just hope the Xiaomi not sometime the bootloader still locks permanently.
seems like China version can install global rom via unlocked bootloader.
is there any instruction on how to do so?
also what will happen if bootloader is unlocked? thanks in advance!
Is there any way to install global rom on china version with locked Bootloader? Maybe with XiaoMiTool V2 ?

They not talking about the play store but google pay (formally known as Android pay) which doesn't work or typically doesn't work if the bootloader is unlocked, but magisk root I believe has a mod to by pass but don't quote me on that I haven't used a xiaomi device before and haven't rooted my phone since I used my old Nexus 6p (which had bootloader unlocked and root with google pay working)(using Huawei mate 10 pro without root)

Doubts before switching ROM

Hello friends, so I bought a K20 Pro in Aliexpress and the seller changed the ROM of the device.
I want to know what are the precautions to take before changing the ROM.
Maybe there is a topic that answer my question but I do not found it.
What do you mean with "don't found it". There are plenty information here... Where did you search?

Actually I read that to unlock the bootloader and change the ROM, I need to register the phone on some xiaomi website and then if I want to block the bootloader back the phone would have to be registered in my account. I don't remember right because I lost the topic where I read this. So I created this topic to find out if there are any tricks or tips to do before these procedures.

He can always lock his bootloader on his device region firmware. He can't do it on any other region firmware that the device doesn't belong.

Does your box have the Chinese letters printed at the back? If Yes, that’s a Chinese unit and you can only lock bootloader on the Chinese firmware. Locking it on Global or Indian firmware will hard brick the device.

PEAMIHG ROM - what is it?

Hi,
I recently bought a Mi 8, 64 GB from a local retailer.
When MIUI 11 came out, I started looking for ways to install it - when I came to a thread suggesting to download an official global ROM, Iv'e done it.
But, I ended up with seeing an error message suggests that I can't install it since it's not compatible with the 'vendor'.
Pocking and digging around the web didn't produce any useful information..
Can I get your help with figuring out what's the origin of it?
I'd like to take it to the retailer - but I need more information that will come handy when I'm filling my complain.
Cheers,
-M

Did you unlocked the bootloader?
Did you downloaded the right rom?
I also have a mi8, 6gb ram, 64gb ROM.
The codename is dipper.
Go to Xiaomi.eu website, and download the right rom and try again

Isn't that an H3G phone? I think you got a phone branded H3G or whatever it's called in your country, that's why you got the vendor message error, I guess..
Don't ask me how to fix it or further details because I can't help you more than this, but if you want to, unlock the bootloader and flash the global rom. Be aware of what you're doing if you want to take it back to the retailer.

I don't think so.. I mean, I'm not saying you did buy it, but the retailer may have sold you one of those..
Look at the name of the ROM, P stands for Android version, EA stands for dipper, MI is the region of the ROM and then..... HG, why not XM? I don't know what XM means, but I think that HG stands for H3G. You can also find ROMs ending with VF, why? Vodafone..
I woyld suggest you to try to authenticate it .

You need to open the phone and follow the instructions to setup your Mi Cloud account, setup Google and use the phone. The Miui 11 update will show up via the updater. At the time the most current global stable build remains on Android 9.
After using the phone for 360 Hours or two weeks, you can unlock the bootloader. From there install whatever you want.
Personally, I recommend the custom Xiaomi.EU rom which is also Miui 11 but based on the Android 10 Chinese beta. But of course all Chinese is removed and Google services are installed. I feel that this is best version of Miui yet.
Edit: I had never heard of the exact that you are using in HG. For this device have a specialized carrier version of Miui?
If so you will need to check with the carrier to if it is possible to unlock the bootloader. I have heard of similar cases with people who own the MiMix3 5G phones.
Thanks for all the answers.

I don't really know to whom it belongs.. I'm trying to figure out this magic. I myself think that it's H3S device.
@MirceaViP
Salut. I did try it out. it ended up stating it's official international version.
@tsongming
I'd like to avoid unlocking the bootloader at the moment. I need this device to connect to a corporate account, which, requires to have the bootloader closed and unchanged.
I was talking with the reseller and he knew nothing about this H3S. We agreed to look for information together.. let's see what's going to be the end of this story.
Thanks for all the answers.

I recently found out about these ROMs, it's just that you have to wait for the manufacturer to push the update. Also, check this link to Mi Community, it's in Spanish but look for the code name of your ROM and will help you to better understand the whole thing (and where your phone comes from.. ).
aittamattia,
I'm still not getting it - what is that ROM? who is the maintainer?

FYI : You posted this question under the Rom's, kernels and Recoveries section. A moderator will surely delete this thread when they find out about it.
Your rom is a carrier rom, you will get the update when the carrier add their own bloatware and releases to you.
Thanks for all the information.
I hope a moderator will move it to Q&A as I want to take it to the reseller to negotiate my options.
Hey,
You have a carrier specific phone. Did you buy it from Three UK?
I bought mine from there exactly one year ago. It came with MIUI 9 and running that "HG" ROM. I had to unlock the bootloader, flash the original global version and lock the bootloader afterwards.
If you don't flash the global version issued by Xiaomi, you will only be able to update to MIUI 11 when Three issue the update. Three is managing the software updates.
Don't waste your time with their customer services, they have no idea what is the software version. If you have the option to get your money back, buy it direct from Xiaomi UK or Europe.
My phone is working fine since then, I'm able to update it via OTA normally.
Please have a look on this:

There are some topics on the Mi Community as well. I had a discussion with some people that had the same issue.

Thanks for the time spent to share information about this ROM.
At the meantime, I'm trying to negotiate nicely with the reseller. It seems like he is looking for information about it as well.
Do you know if H3S got some official customer support system which I can get more inputs on it?
As for the process you've done:
1. Unlocked bootloader
2. Flashed global rom
3. Relocked bootloader
After this process you were able to get OTA updates?

Hi, that's good.
I spoke to their customer services at that time, but had no luck. No one could provide any precise information about the upgrade. Maybe they are able to provide more information now.
So I decided to flash the global version by myself.
Yes, I'm getting OTA updates normally. The official global version is PEAMIXM. I'm on 11.0.6 now.

Well,
I'm in a process of probably replacing it to the official version with actually returning the device and getting other.
if it won't work with the reseller, I'll flash a new global rom and that's it.
P.S. - I saw that there are tools that can do it without unlocking the boot loader, like using EDL. did you tired that?
Thanks

Hey!
I didn't try using EDL, maybe it's an alternative. I had to wait 360 hours to get to unlock the bootloader, then the process of flashing and relock bootloader took 15min.
There are other options of ROMs out there, but I wanted to keep it as much as original as possible.
Hope you find a solution soon!

The sim has to be active right? I kind of just wanted to use this phone without service, just wifi.
I do have an assurance wireless sprint sim but it seems it got locked after a little bit when I put it in the redmi 9. Didn't work with unlocking after the sim locked message came up so I'm not sure if I should even bother.
Assurance wireless says it only supports specific phones and of course this one isn't one of them.

And reading some comments about ota updates I'm just confused as hell lol
So I'm in UK on Vodafone im
On miui 12.0.2 stable global
How do I get 12.5 update please as it doesn't show for me
Do you have to manually flash all updates ?
How do I know if my bootloader is locked?
How do I safely update /flash phone ?
If I flash phone will that void warranty?
Will my bank apps and Google pay work as I need Google pay ?
What is the best version to flash people and do some roms have better features to use than the 1 I'm already on ?
Sorry for being dumb I'm just scared to do things wrong
Thanks for taking time to read this and if you have spare time to reply and guide me I'd be ever so grateful. Can't imagine ever going back to Samsung I just love this phone
If your phone global is variants
Mi 11 Ultra Global Stable V12.5.2.0
OTA Apply for V12.0.2.0
https://bigota.d.miui.com/V12.5.2.0...RKAMIXM-V12.5.2.0.RKAMIXM-7f2669dbe3-11.0.zip
if EEA
Mi 11 Ultra EEA Stable V12.5.3.0
OTA Apply for V12.0.6.0
https://bigota.d.miui.com/V12.5.3.0...RKAEUXM-V12.5.3.0.RKAEUXM-4e14bc378f-11.0.zip
Other options try to click 'check for updated' several times, sometimes the updated will appear
Vodafone unfortunately doesn't let you OTA apply to any other firmware. You got to unlock bootloader.

Starting from halfway down!
If your phone is new, the bootloader is locked.
How to safely flash? Read the threads on unlocking the bootloader. There is very little risk provided you have learned how to do it (and not much risk even if you don't).
Warranty. I don't know. But you can always reflash stock firmware and relock the bootloader.
Most people who unlock flash Xiaomi.eu ROM. It is what I use. It's based on the Chinese firmware but heavily modified.
Banking apps and google pay work just fine
