[Q] How bright is the screen?

I like every aspect of nexus 6
but i'm a bit worried about the brightness of the screen
since AMOLED are kind of infamous for not able to use outdoor
I'm guessing the screen will be similar to Moto X 2014
Anyone who own the phone, can you please share the experience for using the phone under bright sun?

That's the important question. This year's AMOLED's (Galaxy S5, Note 4, Tab S) were very bright... but last year's AMOLED's (Galaxy S4).. not so much. Note 3 was fine however.

some review says moto X 2014 has poor outdoor visibility
and according to phonearena screen measurement, the moto X only has a maximum brightness of 385 nits
Now i'm seriously worried about the N6.....
I will accept anything higher than 450 nits, but 385 nits is just way too low
btw, I always never understood why maximum brightness is not part of the standard specs, it's an important factor, sometimes it's more important than pixel density or color saturation

While I will take all the brightness I can get, I have only struggled a few times with my S4 outdoors. I just don't use my phone all that much in full sunlight. Maybe check a football score during my kid's soccer game. Not exactly mission critical, but I guess it would be nice if it were easier. I certainly wouldn't give up the superior blacks the other 99.99% of the time. But given the awesome screens on the latest Samsungs, we should be able to have our cake and eat it, too.

Its brightness is 270 nits (quite dim when you go by the numbers)
While its 850+ on my z3!
I guess I won't be selling my z3 for a n6 after all!

As with most single specs, the luminance in nits only tells part of the story. I'll wait to see what the N6 screen looks like in full sun before making a final decision.

Very true. Amoled screen have very different reflective properties when compared to an LCD IPS screen. The outdoor viewing experience could and should actually be really good based on all the reviews.

Based on reviews the screen looks less vivid, less sharp and more dull than the Note 4. The visibility is less also; many reviewers claim the screen has great PPI but overall is not amazing. No surprises here - Samsung saves the best screens for themselves and everyone else gets rejects. For that reason I would've used an IPS display, like the iPhone 6+ (which has great visibility in sunlight, sharp and good colours).

If that's the case then Google clearly chose the ambient display (which requires amoled) over an IPS display. The note 4 arguably has the best screen in the world and we don't don't know if Google could get their hands on the iPhone 6 display. Maybe they tried and still couldn't get it.
Google can still calibrate the display properly. We'll just have to wait and see.

We can also, you know...Make calibrations ourselves as well once Custom Kernels make their rounds..
If colour reproduction is an issue we should have little to worry if we can modify it in due time.

Here's how to find out - go look at one yourself before purchase.

You are going to have to post a source for that, because I dont believe the Z3 has 850nit brightness at all. A quick Google search showed nothing of the sort either.

As a Nexus 4 user, i really love this screen! Its screen colors are like bundis ip5 profile (screen color tuning) with even more whiter whites and superb brightness!

i am happy this was answered so i didn't have to make a post just to make sure. i know i have options for dpi and auto brighness controls on my gs2. but i have to wonder why they set it so low in the first place? was it for battery savings? is it because the reflectivity is so good that it didn't need to be higher? is it because it will burn out the organics? if the gs3, 290 nits, was good enough to see outside then i guess this one will be also. it just sucks that it is so low. and i don't know if i would want to trust a kernel that raised it.

Sony smarthones have the worst display ever. turn off bravia engine (contrast and vivid) and you will love motorola 720i ;P

PhoneArena state the Nexus 6 is 270nits.
& the Nexus 5 is 485nits
Yet, I'm pretty sure we've seen both phones on Max brightness next to each other with the Nexus 6 being brighter.
In fact, every video I've seen with both the Nexus 6 & Note 4 has shown the Nexus to have the brighter screen with much better whites.

Every video I've seen with both phones together.
If the Nexus 6 is supposed to only be 270nits, how is this possible?
I've also seen an image of the Nexus 5 & 6 together on Max brightness with the 6 being brighter.
Nexus 5 is 485 nits so PhoneArenas 270nits claim makes no sense at all.
Even in PhoneArenas own video, the Nexus looks brighter than the Note 4, easily visible during browsing & the video benchmark etc.

It's funny because when I was playing with the Note 4 in a Sprint store I was surprised to learn that the screen was at full brightness. It didn't seem all that bright to me.

Nexus 6's display compared to Note 4?

Is the AMOLED screen on the nexus 6 going to be the latest generation AMOLED screen?
If it's not the latest Note 4 screen, and looks something like the Note 3, then I'm not going to be a big fan of the screen... Are there any reviews on the display yet?

Chances of it matching Note 4 display are very slim. Samsung will of course keep its best panels for itself, like in the past.

Sigh, I wish note 4 had a stock Android option then...

Android police says that the 6 is even dimmer at first glance than the X. Not that it should matter in realy world readability and color accuracy, but I suspect that Note 4 would win out on quality.

Liam, of Android Police was referring to the minimum brightness level between the two devices. As far as max brightness is concern, he stated that the device was brighter than the Nexus 5 as shown in the first attachment

This is superb news! The N5 screen gets very bright IMO and am happy to see the N6 outdoes it

Lol, that's only in the dark. It appears that the N5 gets dimmer.

Pretty sure that Super AMOLED is just a trademarked name by Samsung. Probably not much difference at all between one or the other as far as technology goes.

Super amoled is just samsung copyright. ...but is a little different they put a anti glare film between the digitizer and glass ....

Watch the Engadget hands on review. The screen appears to get very bright. He is in a well lit area too that usually washes out a screen.

There was a comparison video that showed max brightness of moto x (2014), nexus 5, nexus 6, and galaxy s5. The nexus 6 was not as bright as the galaxy s5, but brighter than the nexus 5 and moto x.

Yeah, it's plenty bright. I'm not worried about the screen at all at this point. My only concern is will I be able to get it from VZW and it still be able to unlock the bootloader. The Nexus 6 is all about the development available on top of being a super phone all in all.

I've noticed first impression articles-videos mention that the Note 4 display colors are more "punchy" (perhaps more color satured by default) but the Nexus 6 (while the handset is only marginally larger) is described as big & beautiful with superior speakers-overall performance.

I'd assume they are both on their default screen modes. Even on my Note 2, I have played with the other screen modes briefly but they seem more dull than the default standard mode.

In that video at http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/11/04/nexus-6-vs-galaxy-note-4-size-comparison/ I'd assume they are both on their respective max brightness (not auto brightness).
From my long post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56143803&postcount=39 I think the Nexus 6 may actually be brighter on max brightness (>400 nits) while the Note4 in direct sunlight may be worth switching to auto-brightness since according to http://www.androidbeat.com/2014/09/displaymate-praises-galaxy-note4-amoled-display-performance/ max brightness could go from 400 nits up to 750 nits:
"On the brightness side, the Galaxy Note 4’s AMOLED display can go as bright as up to 400 nits in manual mode, which is comparable to displays of the same size. Under Automatic Brightness mode though, the Note 4’s display can reach a brightness level of up to 750 nits. Even the minimum brightness levels of the display is an impressively low 2 nits.

I currently have a 6p and it´s not performing to full potential anymore, and i want to upgrade soon..... Did any of you go from 6p to opt3?

This phone performs 100 times better, so glad I sold the Nexus 6p to buy it.

Yes, my nexus6P died because he bootloop, I bought a oneplus3T, it was a great device, I like him.

Yes, I sold my RMA 6P because of battery issues. The OP3T is much, much faster than the 6P, it's like lightning compared to it. Battery life is also much better, I get around 6.30hrs SOT compared to the 4+on the 6P. The OP3T is let down by its screen, I find the 1080 pentile screen quite ugly and I can see it grainy compared to the 6P. I also find the 6P camera to be better especially in low light. So there are pluses and minuses to both phones.

I also jumped ship 2 days a go. So far i really love it, it looks much better and i really love the fingerprint scanner at the front..
It indeed performs much better and battery seems to be much better as well. Cameraman the won't be as good as the Nexus but it won't be a huge difference. I haven't compared them myself though. So far I'm trying some roms to see which one i like the most. The screen is just great, nice colours as well. 1080p is a plus for a mobile device, the screens are way too small to see the difference between a qhd screen. And a qhd screen consumes a lot of battery.

Modern day QHD screens don't use anymore battery than poor quality 1080 panels. It's a myth. The modern Samsung QHD panels use less power now than the poor quality 1080 panels used in the OP3. The S7 Edge can easily get over 7hours SOT and that's comparable to the OP3.

If the screen itself consume less power its another thing. But the GPU has to work more on a QHD panel.

That affects performance then, not battery drain. As I said, the S7 Edge has similar battery drain to the 3T and that's a QHD display.

Depends on the gpu behavior. It probably will affect battery drain because the GPU will work harder to get nice performance, it will affect performance in heavy tasks for the GPU, like heavy games. But its always affecting battery, not too much of course, but it does.
Also, I repeat, maybe the panel uses less power, that is a different thing.

I have both, but iam using oneplu3t more now borh have their profs and cons cam is no comperison on n6p much better fingerprint accuracy and placing on the back and stereo speakers goes to 6p
Speed bettery life screen is no issue here on 3t nothrotling build quality 6 gigs ram so here what ithink if the cam were good like 6p itwould be clear winner

I have both, i bought 1+ 3t recently and im using it as my daily driver, but im missing the stereo speakers and the camera performance, otherwise, the battery and phone performace is outstanding...i may return back to nexus 6p due to better development foundation

I'm in between selling my 6p and waiting for the 3t to ship. I'm jumping because of main board and software issues and do not want to be stuck with a dead out of warranty phone. I will miss the speakers for sure and am a little concerned about the camera. Is it isolated or across the board slow?

The camera isn't slow, it just takes poorer quality photos than the 6P. It's fast when taking them though.

It's struggles in low light and also struggles in general to focus. In bright light it's decent. The 6P is a better camera overall.

Should I upgrade?

I have a Pixel 3 XL. Should I upgrade to the 4 XL? I love my phone, don't really care about the 90hz display, don't care about soli or face unlock. I do like the lack of the notch but my real reason would be the battery life. Has anyone went from the 3 XL to the 4 XL and noticed an improvement in battery? I know opinions are subjective but do the 200Mah increase in battery and new processer make a good impact on battery life? Any opinions or insight are greatly appreciated!

I did, but only because after one year, I got a REALLY good trade value for the 3XL and the 4XL was $200 off. (do not trade-in at Google) For about the first week I had it, I was jonesing for my old fingerprint sensor. Then face unlock got really good. Eerily good, like if I look at my phone on the stand or even laying flat on my desk, it unlocks. Screen is absolutely gorgeous and sharp as a tack. As for battery, I think the 4 is slightly better. With the 3 after 12 hours at work, I would be down to 20% on average, sometimes less. With the 4 that is now averaging mid-30's. Scientific.... no, but after using the 4 for 4 solid months it is never as low as the 3.. Could be the 3 was a year old... could be my 4 had 106% batttery capacity (Accubattery) when I bought it, but on measure it feels a bit. Should boil down to money. If you can sell your 3 and get a $200 deal or better off the 4 then go for it. If you are looking to just trade into Google and get boned on price, then I would wait for deep discounts when the 4a's arrive. Hope this helps.

I get better on the 4XL but it's not a big difference. In both cases turning off AOD added 30ish minutes of screen; they really need to improve on that. I otherwise have everything on both now and then and end up around 4 to 5 hours on an average day of mixed use which is about 30 more than before with the 3XL. For me this is good enough since phones charge so quickly nowadays and I'm usually by an outlet and otherwise have a 10k brick in my messenger bag when I'm going to be flying and that sort of thing. Not that I wouldn't take more but I can work with what that.

Adaptive brightness!! I
Is it fake?
I had pixel 2 xl but unfortunately the touch screen stopped working.
I am considering buying pixel 4 xl or S20
But I am afraid not liking the camera of s20

You can get screen on of 10 hours or screen on of 2 hours, it's entirely based upon your usage which no one else will be able to match

If you can wait for Pixel 4a - Pixel 5 or take it now its helf price [emoji1750]

I upgraded from the 3XL and never regretted it. It's the last Google flagship for a while at least, so if you find a good deal, go for it! Battery is slightly better, but the overall experience is way better in my opinion, although these things are very subjective.
PS: You don't have to put up with the notch by the way. Use the settings in Developer Options to cover it.

I've no idea if that is true or not; people have lots of different usage cases and will get different screen times. I tend to run at the bottom of the pack with every phone I own, I like to use my toys so I don't turn much of anything off and have a smartwatch and other devices constantly in use. It isn't really surprising that I dont do as well as the ordinary owner.
I've got to agree with the fellow above though, the 4XL is significantly better in use. It isn't any one thing I'd point at, everything is a little step better. If the phone had been released at mid range pricing to match it's rather modest spec it would have been the hottest phone of 19 and had rave reviews.

Pixel 5 display looks washed out?

Hi.
I've just got my Pixel 5, coming from a Pixel 2 (non-XL).
It's very much noticeable straight away and even more so side by side...Is the Pixel 5 display a lot warmer/paler/washed out?
Greys especially are a lot lighter compared to the dark greys of my Pixel 2...colours less deep (tried both phones on Natural, Boosted and Adaptive/saturated)...it's almost like the Pixel 2 has more blue in the display maybe? It's a lot cooler and easier to look at/see things.
A great example is using the Youtube Music app...well, here's a selection of pics demonstrating...

The difference is really obvious on the first, second and third pictures, less obvious on red screens (pic 5), but in the last couple of pics there's major differences on the reference picture on natural or boosted setting...
Yeah I dunno if I'm just being funny and noticing the differences but...yeah it just feels really disjointed every time I look at the screen...

p.s. when I take a screenshot on both phones the colours look mostly similar when viewed on a PC so it's definitely to do with the panel...Don't know if it's standard calibration or faulty panel but yeah...really hard to look at numerous dark mode apps because they're so...not dark. Blacks look black though.

I observed the same on my Pixel 5, I 'm coming from Pixel 2 XL. I like saturated look on my Pixel 2 XL, but now I got used to Pixel 5 colors - Adaptive color profile

It's really bad in some apps like Discord...makes it very difficult to look at especially when the brightness dips in low light.
Have you seen any other phones to compare to?
Since I've been using Android I've only used "pure google" devices...(Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2013, Pixel 2 and Pixel 5)...even my father has a Pixel 2...so yeah I have no other experience to compare it to, especially more modern phones

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to test with any other phones.

I also came from the Pixel 2 XL whose screen was ridiculously oversaturated. True, in direct comparison Pixel 5 looks "washed out" but this is much more true to life colors.

It's not the colours that bother me so much, more like the greys...
But lookibng at the XDA Pixel 5 display review, the Color temp is lower (warmer) and the Gamma is lower (lighter) which would very much explain.
6400K is just wrong for me to be honest! (and i personally prefer a higher gamma value but I'm odd like that)...
But mine being similar to the XDA review sample assumes calibration is the same across all models...I wonder!
But here with the Pixel 5’s minimum-brightness tone map curve, its 2.20 gamma power response may appear too light and washed out in dark environments.

I definitely notice that, the display gets much worse at low brightness so it needs to be cranked up a fair bit to uncomfortable levels in dark environments...
Still, I'm gonna go check out a couple of stores to see what other examples of he Pixel 5 are like...

Been going around a few stores today comparing my Pixel 5 with the display models...
The display models definitely have slightly darker blacks...
But then a difference is I have a Spigen screen protector on mine...
How much, if at all, would a tempered glass screen protector affect things? Would they make the greys look slightly lighter/washed out? Or is it differences in the panels?
