I registered my face in good light and while wearing my glasses. In most situations face unlock seems to work well, but when I'm in bed without glasses, it doesn't work at all. I wear pretty strong prescription glasses, could that be it? Should I rescan while not wearing glasses?
Yep, I noticed the same. Especially when laying on the side on a pillow, so only ~3/4 of the face is visible to the Phone.
Maybe add an additional face?

I was thinking the same thing, regarding a second face scenario.
I've been told I am two-faced! How can I add another face? Can't see the option anywhere.

This. I did the same thing and it works perfect with or without glasses
Noticed the same thing as well I believe if you have a pillow or anything behind your head while sleeping it struggles also could be the fact that while sleeping it flattens youlr face so may be that's why it doesn't work.
I deleted my face and relearned without glasses. Unlock with glasses is a little bit slower now, but unlock in bed is much better.
Sadly there seems only one face that could be trained, not more like fingerprints? What if I want to share the phone with gf or so?

I think it's been well covered, but I too registered without glasses and have no trouble unlocking with glasses. I can wear a beanie, my hood pulled up, glasses, in a not well-lit room, instant unlock every time.
Works fine for me with or without glasses. Sometimes I takes longer when I am laying on my back in the dark. But, it still works.

No issues detecting my face with glasses on or off, with sunglasses, glasses and sunglasses with a hat on, and glasses with a hat on and Sony over ear headphones on.

100% agree. I've relearned my face multiple times now and I'm still waiting for it to be unlocked when bringing it to my face, with the fingerprint sensor it was unlocked before even coming out of my pocket.
Why is there no option learn MULTIPLE FACES!!!! What the actual ****? Let us give it more chance to be accurate, even iPhone can do this lmao.. I've had the phone for 24 hours now and its starting to feel like the windows vista of the windows world.

I'm using the pouch all the time, and still my screen is quite oily the most of the time. It's especially visible outdoors in the sun.
I used to have HTC HD before that, never used the pouch and still the screen was in much better condition most of the time. (i've always used just fingers there as well)
So did my fingers become more "oily" or there is something with the screen of nexus, that makes it really not-oil-resistent?

I had the same issue. It was driving me up a wall. Once I put on a screen protector the issue went completely away.

There's a new invention, you may not have heard of it.... its called SOAP! You put it on your HANDS and it makes the oil go away.
Or you could even *GASP* clean your screen on your shirt! Glass is a pretty durable thing, so unless your shirt is made of rocks, I'm sure that will work.
This was actually one of the first things I noticed about the phone. I came from an iphone 3g and it didn't have the same problems.
Overall, it's a minor inconvenience considering everything else I've gained.....

Has anyone tried a bike-mount that is waterproof?
I am interested in this since I dont want to pay 250+USD for an expensive bike-computer with GPS.

Anyway, that would probably suffice for a light rain, but I'd be pretty scared if I was actually riding in the rain with that, as IPX4 is basically resistant to "light splashes".
I have the same issue, I'd love to see a good solution. My previous solution sucks, but it works. An otterbox mounted to the bars. I can't operate the phone, but it's crash and water proof.
I forgot to mention that I bike mostly on a bit rough terrain, which makes me wonder if its worth taking the chance with a weakish bike-mount. I have already cracked the screen once.
I think I will just get a cheap bike computer that measure speed. And keep my phone as a tracker in my backpack or under the bike saddle.

Part of the appeal of a fingerprint scanner is to be able to use it in situations where you can't use face unlock.
I use my phone at literally all times throughout the day. My biggest concern is unlocking it via face unlock when there's no light. I use my phone in bed while my wife is asleep and find myself constantly locking it, unlocking it, etc.
So will it work in the dark? Normal face unlock on most Android phones just use the camera to match a face, but does the Pixel 4 do the exact same thing, or is there a bit more technology in it that will somehow scan my face in the dark and unlock it?
Any insight would be great!
That's one of the main reasons I got this phone, believe it or not. I can't stand unlocking in the middle of the night with those god-awful f*cking optical fingerprint sensors, blinding the sh*t out of you. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure it works in the dark since they used infrared cameras, the soli radar sensor, flood illuminator and the dot projector.

I turned all the lights off. You do have to press to lock button. It lights up the screen and unlocks it instantly

This. Which is unfortunately what I have been stuck with, to date. The 31st can't come fast enough.
Not only will your phone unlock in the dark, but if you face your phone towards a mirror and get close to the mirror, it will unlock from your reflection (yes, even in the dark).

That depends on the type of fingerprint sensor. You seem to be referring to the under the screen kind of which there are two types. There are the ones that basically use a camera sensor to take a picture of your finger through the screen. Those are less secure and do require the screen to light up. There is also the better one from Qualcomm that uses ultrasound to make a 3D mapping of your fingerprint. It is more secure and doesn't require the screen to light up. The Galaxy S10 and Note 10 have the ultrasonic type. I think OnePlus uses the optical type but I'm not sure.
I really would have liked it the Pixel 4 had the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead of (or many in addition to) the dumb face unlock.

Ultrasonic being the better and more secure of the two, and obviously works in more conditions than the optical sensor, but unfortunately it's slow as hell as of right now. Which is something I don't understand about OnePlus, why they couldn't use the ultrasonic and just work on the software. Part of the reason why I'm ditching one plus, they're not really good when it comes to software, but they have no problem throwing a sh*t ton of hardware at it to try and make you forget that fact. IMO, optical was last year's tech, companies should be working on making ultrasonic more functional and affordable. As for adding one to the P4, I guess that's user preference. I feel the face unlock will be enough, for me.

My only guess on why One Plus went for the optical sensor is the same reason it doesn't get IP certification.....cost. The ultra sonic sensor probably costs more than the optical sensor. I haven't really had a chance to use either one myself but in the videos I've seen of Samsung phones the ultra sonic sensor does seem to work pretty quick.

Hello, I recently bought a glass screen protector, it fits well and everything. It's one of the UV gel applicated ones. It stated in the description that it worked with the fingerprint sensor, but at least half the time it will say no match. Maybe even more than half the time. It's really bad. Before the protector was one I was amazed at how well the fingerprint sensor worked. I had an in display sensor on my last phone, OnePlus 7pro, and it almost no comparison as to how fast and accurate it was.
I already set the sensitivity to high for the touchscreen and I have also redone the fingerprint learning process a few times.
So now I feel torn. I don't want to live without a screen protector. I feel they really can save you from breaking your screen when you drop your phone as the protector will crack instead by absorbing the force instead.
So has anyone found one that works really well?

How? I've installed two of them and although looks fine, have to press SUPER hard to even get it to read...and even then it reads it like 25% of the time is all.
If I have face unlock turned on it gives the appearance that it's working fine, try it in a dark room so you know it's not using the face. Doesn't work worth crap....

The domes I installed are fine as well.
Whitestone dome work perfectly with fingerprint...never missed a single time so far in 2 months

With the Whitestone screen protector I had to add the same finger to all of the available slots to ensure fairly reliable unlocking. It still sometimes fails if my fingertip is very dry.
GOTO screen protector from the Tmobile store works 90% of the time, but I bought it at an expensive price of $45. You have to wait for 2 days for the screen protector fingerprint sensor area to work properly.

Same over here, even when registering a new FP entry, I need to press hard, or no go.
Interestingly if I breathe over the finger (adding moisture) before touching the screen, it recognises like 95% of the time. Although I workaround, it's annoying to say the least, not to mention what someone thinks if they see you doing it.

One thing that may be worth mentioning is that when setting my fingerprints up my finger/thumb is turned to the same angle that it is when I unlock the phone. When you hold the phone and unlock it with your thumb it isn't straight up and down, it's turn to the side, when you scan your thumb it should be in the same position. Same thing goes for scanning your finger.
Do you really need a fingerprint sensor?
Time has proven 2 things to me about device passwords; the only real security is physical possession of the device, and you will at some point lose the password access due to a hardware failure (including data corruption).
Total lockout passwords are a bad plan unless you're dealing with national or sensitive company etc data.
All I use is double tap on... and never set a bios password on any of my PCs, ever.
Encryption for critical data drives is even worse.
Total access loss vs an imaginary false sense of security.
Think hard about that before you get locked out.
Don't get too clever for your own good...

That's the worst screen protector I have every seen in my life. Tmobile should be sued for selling it.

You don't, no, we just find it hard to believe because it's no where near that for the majority of us. Tape over the front camera to rule out face unlock and barely touch the screen. Does it unlock with your FPS or do you have to press HARD to get it to register? Don't see how it magically works for you when it doesn't for 99% of everyone else.

HUH? I doubt hardly anyone I know has ever had the not be able to get to their phone due to "hardware failure". And what "total loss?" That's why it backs up to the cloud (where you have 2FA) and why there's a backup passcode if it can't read your fingerprint. Plus a lot of us work for companies that require passcodes on the phone to sync corporate email......so FPS is faster than the darn code every time.
Why would you even risk losing your phone with no lock on it, the person could cause issues so quickly on that phone. I see no downside....my phone locks me out and I can't even enter the backup passcode, I can get a new phone and restore from the cloud. My phone gets lost with no code the user sees all my pics, access my google pay, posts as me on FB/Twitter, texts my wife, etc.
Please, don't try to tell people they shouldn't use phone security. SMH

I've tested it with the phone not facing me and it works fine, I don't have to press hard, just place my finger on the screen. A friend of mine has the Dome as well and has zero issues.
I've been plagued by fingerprint issues just like everyone else. But I've also been running an experiment. Every time my fingerprint won't unlock the phone I wash my hands. AND IT WORKS EVERY SINGLE TIME!! The sensor is EXTREMELY sensitive!! If you have even one speck of dust it could fail to unlock.
I promise you.... try it!! It will work every single time!!
I mean really, thanks Google!!! I probably should wash my hands more if they're dirty enough to keep the sensor from working.
Helps to clean the sensor now and then, too. I have this issue on my Pixel 5 all the time.
I actually find the opposite. If my fingers have any dampness at all, it won't read properly.

That happens to me too sometimes. Like perfect for a day or so then no matter what I do it's 3/10 just like you. I then reboot and it usually clears it up. One fail safe method it to rub your thumb (or whatever finger you use) across your forehead then try again. I've heard licking your finger but that is disgusting and I'd never do that. Try those 2 methods see if it helps. The March update also seems to make it quicker but it could be placebo.

I've gone from being pissed to being amused at how bad it is. For me 7 is worse than 6 ever was. Hell, just getting a couple digits enrolled on 7 has been impossible, and for an extra rub it teases and craps out at the 11:55 mark every time.
To be fair, I work with lumber and my digits tend to be rough. But this never stopped me from using fingerprints with older and cheaper phones.

What that means is the fingerprint sensor on your phone is of poor quality, just like some of the other components.
Google Pixel phones and their clean (read very basic with lack of features) software are both overrated and overpriced. You're essentially paying the premium to cover their marketing costs, and not for buying a better device.
I live in a dry environment, and I find that if my fingers are particularly dry the FPS doesn't work. Just breathing on my fingertip is usually enough to get the FPS to work. That being said, the March 2023 update seems to have improved the FPS significantly for me. Or it may be placibo effect.
It's 2:00 AM here, I switched off the lights in my room, took my P7, removed all four fingerprints, added them again sitting in full darkness. Turned on lights again. Well... now the fingerprint reader has never been so fast, unlocking so snappy and even with a soft and short touch with the tip of my finger. Hilarious.
I hope the devs at Google optimize the software for this mess of a sensor. What a sh*tshow.
And now at 10:30 AM it does not work anymore... LOL. No matter how I press the sensor, it forces me to put in my PIN to unlock.

I was initially afraid about this FPS issue reading all the bad experiences but it works basically 99% of times.
I still suspect it has more to do how you position your finger on the learning phase and is the finger dry or moist.
Because during learning phase it didn't ask to retouch the sensor with moist fingers but did ask to try again with dry finger. I suspect if you teach with moist finger it expects moist fingers but with dryer fingers it seems to not matter that much. On learning phase i pressed slightly harder compared to normal use.
I relearned finger 3 times because on the first two tries it would work about 50% of times. I remember i pressed quite gently on first tries since it looked like it registered it.
On the last try i had semi-dry fingers and tried to mimic normal unlocking position while giving the whole footprint. Even the very bottom part of thumb that normally don't touch the sensor.
Now it's pretty much like OnePlus6 experience with FPS with the exception that when the finger is super dry need to press slightly harder and it will register it.
If it matters i have screen film applied on screen. Not tempered glass.
Also with March 2023 update i haven't had a single fail yet with fingerprint detection.
Initially when received the phone i had October 2022 software and i didn't want to update. Then i exactly remember that it would stop working normally after a day or so. Like it forgot some areas of finger or expected very precise location.
I did buy phone in february and it could be that earlier batches had different FPS hardware revision. Smaller resolution/memory ... ?
I played around with FPS trying to get it to fail and when pressing too gently it fails so i would conclude the right pressure is quite important. Didn't find any difference in total darkness vs well lit room.

It is a fairly well know thing after Google moved away from the ultrasonic finger print scanners last used on the Pixel 5s, it has not worked well for many people. If you did the research prior you would have seen this has been issue ever since. Easy solution is don't use it and go back to the old style of a pin or pattern.
Can't comment on the face recognition portion, since I haven't done any research on it, nor do I want to, since I don't have a desire to use it, but I am sure other here have extensive experience and knowledge about it. Just have to do the research before trying it if you want to know what may or may not come of it before trying.

Even easier is to not use any protection at all.
Both are impractical suggestions.
Having been spoiled by Face Unlock, there is no going back for me. Fingerprint is used mostly in dark environments where Face Unlock struggles.

and the darkness is where my fingerprint on Pixel 7 fails 100% of the time.
Pin is difficult while in motion. Pattern for me is easiest.
To OP, I wash my hands religiously. I won't touch a door knob and then touch my face, so washing alone is not the solution. I imagine it has to do with screen protectors installed since everyone uses different ones that have varying thicknesses and see-through visibility.

I wonder what kind of special fingerprint sensor the Pixel 6 and 7 have then. My last few devices (Realme & OnePlus) with in-display fpr ... well you could have slapped a $2 or a $50 tgsp on it, and it did not matter in any way. They worked just like a charm. I had a Pixel 6 (yeah, f* that pos) and now a Pixel 7 (I really like it) and both fpr are the worst mess.

You gotta figure out what is wrong. Not too many responses here because most are not having those issues any longer. Originally, yes for sure. But lately it's been working a good 90+ % of the time. Never can get an unlock after swimming though until I moisturize but that's excusable. Get rid of the silly screen protector which is useless unless you are in the sand/gravel business which I see you are not. (nice walls) If it still doesn't work perhaps an RMA would be in order. I've seen that happen and the replacement is way better. But you shouldn't live with a flawed device that is otherwise very good.

All good points. I don't have opinions about which screen protector works best since my Pixel 7 sensor is a dud without one. If my 7 is worse than 6 then simple logic suggests there's a defect.
I bought a used Pixel 5 a few months ago as a backup, plus it helped verify my P7 problem isn't my fingers. My wife called the P5 "cute" so now she has it. I've never gone through Google's replacement process before but it should be a breeze compared to getting the P5 back.

One of the issues seems to be Tensor/Exynos versus Snapdragon. Apparently, the former can't use the latter's ultrasonic sensor tech without infringing on patents. But I think the overwhelming problem boils down to tolerances and inconsistencies in the manufacturing process, especially in the past couple years, and whether our Pixels were assembled during first shift Monday morning, hump day, payday...
@manjaroid lol you have no idea what it took to get my wife to trade in her p5. The p7 cost $100 after so she went for it. Of the rumors of the p8 at 5.8 are true then Black Friday is looking really good. As for your device it does sound like a lemon. Try to get an rma of you can.
