USB-C to 3.5mm adapter / Dongle Recommendation - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Coming from Pixel OG what adapter/dongle does everyone recommend getting?

I use the dongle from my pixel 2. That works fine.

I have been happy with this, I think it sounds better than the stock one.

I read from other post they are quiet and not as loud as google one or some other brands. Cant seem to get a definite answer.

I got this one. Works pretty good and I like it's form. Feels pretty sturdy.

That is confirmed. Definitely more quiet (apple). Purchased one the other day, to get reasonable sound you have to have the media volume at maximum.
Then I went and purchased the google version and the same sound on the same headphones, it was only half volume.

Does anyone know if the DAC using the Google dongle is any better than it was with the Pixel 2? With my P2XL plugged into a powered studio monitor the overall volume was low and it clipped horribly with the phone volume more than about 75% making it essentially useless for audio playback in this way. I'm hoping they've improved either the phone audio output or the capability of the dongle.

I tried reusing my OnePlus USB-C to 3.5 dongle and my Pixel 4 XL does not like it. Looking for a replacement.

Ditto. Can't use the one from my old Moto Z.

I bought a new Google dongle (the $12 one) and it works great. The problem I was having was the dongle that came with my P2XL. Using it on both the new and old phone, same results. Using the new dongle on both phones, both sound great with plenty of volume. Best $12 I've ever spent on audio equipment. 8-D

Try the Razer phone dongle. It was good with the Pixel 2XL, haven't tried it with the 4XL as I lost that dongle, but I'm gonna be re-ordering one as a backup to my iBasso dc02.

Thanks for the recommendation @pixelsquish
I just got one of the iBasso DC02 from HiFiGo
OMG... what a frigg'n amazing little piece of tech!!!
ViPER4Android + Bose QC20 + iBasso DC02 = Amazing audio experience
The iBasso DC02 is a little spendy. But I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy another, if I have to.
The Apple dongle, that I picked up at an airport kiosk, is now in the junk drawer. It'll due in a pinch (ie. for a phone call). But the difference between the Apple dongle and the iBasso is stunning.
Hint - I found a nice little review here, where there's a coupon code for a few bucks discount.

Has anyone tried the Moshi model from Google's store?

Sound and Bluetooth Headphones

"Hearing' that people are saying the sound is 'crap' (their words), I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to try a decent set of bluetooth earbuds or headphones?
I would like something with a full range, good highs and lows. I have a decent pair of corded Sennheisers that I used to use with my TF101 Transformer, but I am afraid the SQ may be as bad as others are saying.
These have decent reviews:

I use a Sony MW600 with my phones (n7 hasn't arrived yet, but plan on using the MW600 with it as well). I think that the Smart Wireless Headset pro replaced the MW600, but not 100% sure.
I *totally* recommend the mw600's (and I'm assuming the newer Smart Wireless Headset pro will be similar in quality). The sound quality is excellent. I'd call myself a casual audiophile... I appreciate good sound even if I don't have a "golden ear". I really don't detect any difference between the BT audio and direct cable with the same headphones.
So that being said, I used the mw600s till the included ear buds (in ear buds, not quite IEMs) wore out. I now use the teeny MW600 with my Sennheiser HD25 SPs. LOVE THIS COMBINATION. It's amazing how long the MW600 drives the HD25s, how loud and clear the audio can be.
And the Sony BT dongle handles calls as well, of course.
Get it (or the smart wireless headset pro, I'd assume they are similar in quality, but best to research) and the HD25 SPs and you're golden.
Note that I did recable my HD25 SPs and built a split cable that pigtails short off of the headphones so I can clip the Sony dongle to my shirt, along with an extension if I'm using the HD25s hardwired.
I currently use some MM400 sennheisers, works great on my N7, iPhone ect
The forward/backwards function works too!

I use a set of JayBird Freedoms that I use with my Motoactv and my GS2. Sound quality is pretty similar to my Bose IE2's. They carry good range, highs and lows. I have read that they have a great warranty and good customer support. Luckily I have not had to put it to the test yet.
Jaybirds here also. I've had them for about 8 months and love them.

If you are looking for bluetooth, make sure it has the apt-x codec. It makes your audio files sound like a wired headset. I use the HTC stereoclip in my car and for my EVO LTE. The soun difference is amazing. The samsung hs3000 has it also and they come with earbuds and it is only $34 on Amazon. Look on the Evo lte forums under accessories to learn more.
Has anyone used the LG Tone - HBS700 Wireless Bluetooth Headset? Looks like it has good reviews and it would be comfortable to wear. I'm debating on buying it. I listen to music relatively frequently as i'm out and about and would like to go wireless for convenience, but not sure if it is an absolute necessity.

Bluetooth audio is about convenience, but there really are some gems out there for audio quality.
I'm still using a 5+ year old set of Jabra bluetooth headphones I bought new from Tigerdirect when they mysteriously went on sale for $25 shipped.. and a few days later they went back up to the normaly $125... not before me advising a bunch of co-workers at the time and letting them try them out.
This was when Bluetooth 2.1+edr was pretty cutting edge, and for wireless headphones they sound fantastic.
That being said, when I get my Nexus 7 16gb pre-order in, I'll test them out... but on a new device I have no doubts they'll sound great.
I also have an old pair of KOSS headphones, with full range, but they look ridiculous with large bold print on each ear, but they sound great.
I'd update that, but I rarely wear headphones while at home. I work for a large Canadian Bank doing internal IT, and I wear a monural plantronics headphone most of the day, so I give my ears a break after hours.

Good quality Bluetooth earbuds

I'm looking for some BT earbuds, better than average quality primarily for music to replace the Jabra 620s I have now. I'd like to keep the cost <$50.
I've seen a few suggestions here, but reviews on Amazon haven't been all that stellar. Any recommendations?

I have a LG HBS-730 ... I think it is the best of the $50 units. I picked mine up off of Amazon. The predecessor to this unit was the HBS-700, check out its ratings on Amazon ... it is very popular. Some people had a few difficulties with the 730 when it was released and this is reflected in some of the reviews. I am not having any problems on the Nexus 10 or my Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Any idea how it would work with a ski helmet? Does it block sound?
I've used the LG HBS-700 set for about a year. Love them, but had to send it in for repair after 4 months when the battery wouldn't hold a charge. Got them back and it's been good since.

If you buy the the LG's be sure to hit up newegg and check the reviews on the HBS 730...I have both the 700 and the 730, 730 sounds better but has really awful reception compared to the 700. The reviews will confirm this.

I actually have the HBS-700's, not the 730's. I am not a skier, but if regular earbuds fit under a ski helmet, these should too. You would want to keep the part that you wear on your neck under a jacket or something so they don't fly off.

Phaiton PS 210 BTNC
After much research I got a pair of Phaiton noise-cancelling ear buds PS 210 BTNC active noise cancelling ear buds. They're pricey, but actually well worth it.
I might have unusually shaped ears, but ear buds are all too often torture for me. These are so comfortable that I can even fall blissfully asleep listening to music.
The sound quality is wonderful and the noise-cancellation is great on airplanes, in server farms, working w/ power tools, etc. Check it out!

Something like this and you can use whatever headphone/earphone you already have. And if the battery ever runs out on the unit you can plug in your headphone straight into the phone.... Unlike bluetooth only headsets

There are cheaper and more expensive units. Sony, samsung and Habra has something similar. There is a black version for 20. Just look at amazon and look around for a bit. Good thing also is that you can hook a 3.5mm aux cable and connect it to speakers, car stereos, receivers and a lot more. A lot more versatile than bluetooth only headsets but i like a lot of functionality for devices and accessories. But you can pay more and have less options but hey you'll have "cool" bluetooth only headphones if you like.

[Q] best in-ear headsets for Note 2

Hello,
I want an in-ear headset which is most compatible with my Note 2. Do anyone can suggest me about it??
My wished headsets are.
1. Heartbeats by Dr Dre
2. DNA in ear Pure monster sounds
3. C5 In-Ear Headphones by Bowers & Wilkins
4. HiDefDrum +Remote by Atomic Floyd
Pls help me choosing the most suitable headsets for my Note 2. Thanks in advance.:cyclops:
A little confused with your question because you listed 4 pairs of wired earbuds that supposed to have high quality sound but in terms of compatibility catered toward iPhone with an extra remote functionality. I'm not 100% sure with each since I just briefly looked up their spec, but they offer a basic mic with call button to pick up/end the call, and probably play/pause the music/video. But if you want a true multimedia compatibility you probably better off with a cheapo Samsung headphones, although it's hard to find genuine since even Amazon is filled with $5 knockoffs and their sound quality is sub-par. If you are after sound quality and full Android compatibility, check out review of JayBird Blue Buds X I posted earlier (link in my signature). Those are wireless bluetooth and fully compatible with Note 2, although if you prefer wired one that can be used with any audio device or on a plane, you probably better off with wired solution.
As you were told, the list you provided isn't that compatible with Android and Note II in specific.
You can check out Etymotic that have good earphones and are compatible with Android devices.
Personally, I use Superdarts by Atomic Floyd and am very happy with them (but they're not for anyone) in terms of sound quality and mic quality (which really surprised me).

Wow, so you have $1,200 pair of earbuds and $4,800 pair of headphones, and I would guess that tube headphone amp cost thousands of dollars as well?!? And you don't consider yourself audiophiles? I just consider you a VERY rich person who has a good taste in best gadgets
With cars, I know you are not a car racer. You just have your Maserati and Porsche as daily beaters
The Note produces great sound, and to complement that I'm using the Logitech Ultimate Ears 350vm. It's a nice pair of earphones with a strong bass, plus the controls on the earphones work too. Very, very comfortable and the length of the wires is long enough to be comfortable around you.
For $1300, I'd rather buy the Shure SE535 LTD(which is still considered as the best IEM among audiophiles) + its Android compatible cable or even a pair of custom JH or UE.
I haven't listen to the K3003I yet, but from what I've read on Headfi and HeadRoom, the K3003I is really overpriced.
Just ordered Etymotic HF2; given the rave reviews i dug up online, i am suprised no body here has them!

If you want a better sound quality and more bass, go for B&W C5. If you care more about neutral sound with better comfort and noise isolation - MIE2. I can't speak for C5, since I only reviewed their P3 and P7 headphones (per my link in sig), but I heard a mixed opinion about the comfort of their fitment with that adjustable wire loop. If you wear your in-ear headphones for an extended period of time, I would suggest MIE2.
Also, take a look into Shure SE215, those go for about $99 and have removable cable. Have decent sound isolation, comfy fit, and warmer sound signature toward bass. Typically, cables break and you have to through away your headphones. With removable cables, you just get another set for $20.
I came back to the creative ep630s. Nothing beats them, in the price to performance ratio.

S5 USB AUDIO Out - for the Audiophiles

Just in case anybody was wondering. S5 USB Audio out works .. Hooray !
I haven't extensively tested how much better the audio sounds with USB vs directly from headphone.

This is exactly what I'm looking for to handle noise when I fly. Just using a LOD from my iPod and iPhone into a low cost Cmoy a few years back made a difference in quality, so getting the digital out of my S5 would be sweet. Previous Androids (the Note and Dell Streak) had low output, at least for my aged Shures. I couldn't hear well over the engine noise in my crappy seats.
Anyone have it working with a portable DAC Amp? I've been looking for a reason to buy a new travel amp and 'phones. I'd like a lower cost amp as losing/damaging it is a real possibility.

Emailed nuforce, this is the response;
We can't confirm any reports that the uDac-2 will work for any Android device, because we don't support it. However, it is experimental, and it might be possible.
The uDac-3 is different than the uDac-2. It will not work on Android because Android does not currently support asynchronous USB playback. The uDac-2 is synchronous, which is standard, and the uDac-3 is asynchronous, and requires OEM drivers for Windows, but Mac OS supports it natively.

Bought this from eBay for 99p http://www.ebay.com/itm/310964760519 and it's just freaking amazing how much better it sounds through the headphones, and the controls on it actually control the volume and mute of the phone like the original headphones do.
Nice thread, but the USB audio out worked just fine for me on the S3 and S4.
Sounds like your DAC wasn't compatible with those models. Or vice versa as the case may have been.
.
USB Audio worked fine on my S3 and S4 as long as it was a touchwiz based ROM and the setting for usb-audio was enabled. However, the setting is missing (or moved?) on my S5.
Did those who got it to work just plug it in with an OTG cable and have it work? Or did you enable USB-audio out? If I recall, that setting was part of the DockMode settings, which Samsung removed.
BTW, the portable amp I'm using is a cheap one recommended on some Hi-Fi forums. It's found on eBay, called ELE HI-FI 01.

USB-C to 3.5mm Dongle Issue (& Recommendations?)

What's going on 8T friends? I was hoping you guys might have some input and/or recommendations for a *GOOD* headphone dongle...one that has been tested to work without issue, specifically with this phone - the OnePlus 8T.
I want to start by apologizing for the super long-winded post!!! I also want to preface this by saying there is a possibility my issue may not lie w/ my current adapter, but possibly w/ my car's (old) aftermarket head unit...though I think it's unlikely given its never had an issue w/ any other phone or dongle.
*EDIT: I suppose it's also possible that there's some firmware issue & perhaps an update might resolve it, but I'm at the mercy of T-Mobile US & their *SLOW* update schedule. International phones have had like 4 updates in a month, & we've only had the day one update (still no AOD!).
I know it should be something super simple and there's likely many, *MANY* similar threads in other devices' forums, along w/ OnePlus Community & Reddit as well. But *please*, just hear me out. I feel like a dumb**s for even having to post this. There's crazy inconsistency w/ what's supposed to be a f***ing universal standard...this s**t is far from working universally!
I've had experience with 3 separate models of adapter w/ my previous phone, the OnePlus *7 Pro* (on Android 10). With the 7 Pro, I found that the Essential Phone's dongle worked flawlessly in every scenario I need it for. It's less expensive than the official Oneplus branded one, & generally just of better quality, w/ a thicker braided cable. I also had the official a OnePlus dongle which also worked perfectly w/ my old 7 Pro, but I lost the damn thing...plus, it's just too expensive, & OnePlus doesn't even have it in stock?!?! I also used the Apple dongle - surprisingly cheaper than OnePlus' dongle, but the volume level was permanently way too low, w/ no way to resolve that (I tried for nearly a month). The Apple one has long since been returned.
I am currently still using the Essential dongle as it's the only one I haven't yet lost or returned, but I'm running into a strange issue on both my phone & my girl's 8T as well (both are T-Mobile branded 8Ts, the "8T+5G", which is the exact same hardware the rest of the world gets, just w/ different firmware). The Essential dongle is flawless w/ the 7 Pro, & also flawless when just plugging it in to regular headphones - but when hooking it up to an aux cable & plugging it into our car's old, aftermarket head unit to play music or videos, there is a completely random/intermittent issue where whatever app is playing audio will pause itself, & then more often than not it'll also start making this crazy, strange, squealing distortion sound...but no longer any actual audio. This occurs regardless of what app we're using to play music or videos (YouTube Music, regular YouTube, Spotify, etc.). It seems to be totally random, sometimes working fine for a bit, but then going completely haywire...and once it's starts happening, it just won't quit. Sometimes switching to another app will start it, sometimes an incoming text message will start it, & sometimes it'll do it all by itself. This happens w/ USB OTG enabled or disabled, & I've tested it w/ 3 separate aux cables.
I'm at a loss, & I just wanted to get someone else's input before buying like 5 random ones of Amazon or eBay. We're at the point where we're just listening to old CDs because we can't stream anything current, & we're too broke to replace a head unit just to find that's not even the issue. *THIS IS ABSOLUTELY MADDENING*.
I would just buy the OnePlus dongle again, but they can't be bothered to keep it in inventory...at least for customers in the US. Any thoughts at all on what the issue could be would be infinitely appreciated, asking w/ dongle recommendations as well of course.
*THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO ME RAMBLE!!!*

Thank you so much for your reply. I noticed you mentioned analog. Do you think the issue might be from the Essential one being active? That never occurred to me...I always assumed active ones would be better, instead of relying on the phone's DAC. You might be on to something there! Thanks again

I went to best buy and tested the Google and apple dongles. . The apple one sounded great but suffered from the low volume issue. The Google one sounded great and had no low volume issue. I kept that one. Returned the apple one.
It works flawlessly. Is $12. It also has a great Soundstage and volume. No problems here in anyway.
Also, just as a heads up, I use it with PowerAmp and it sounds great really. I have a lg v20 for when I want the best sound but this does the trick for when I'm just trying to not have a million peripherals.

Edit: @mingkee , I meant to reply to you here. My fault. XDA Labs kind of sucks.
I just wanted to let you know I pulled the trigger and bought a two pack of the Moto dongle you suggested off Amazon for less than $9...and you were right!!! So, many, many thanks to you kind sir/ma'am/whatever.
I've been in the car for half and hour trying to do anything I can to force that issue upon myself, and it just doesn't happen now! I really appreciate you!
My infinite appreciation to you. ?

You were right, they worked! I replied to you to explain my current (excellent) experience with the Moto dongle (in my previous post above), but replied to the wrong person/comment because of my user error and XDA Labs sucking on mobile. But seriously, thank you!!!

It's just a heads-up
Apple headset with lightning plug with Anker USB-C to lightning combo also works well with Poweramp custom output setting
Sound is distorted with default settings, but when you use the following settings, you will love this combo
DVC enabled
OpenSL Hi res having USB DAC enabled
Press the gear and bypass EQ
I wondered why I didn't purchase Poweramp license?

This is what I bought. I guess they are what Moto include, and not made my Moto (rarely are any of these made by the phone manufacturers I think). Just ordered another 2 pack after receiving the 1st LOL. They get lost easy enough. I've been pushing it, trying to force any of my previous issues and they've been working like a champ for me.

Note: analog ONLY
Both 8T and N10 are capable up to 24bit/384kHz with Poweramp both analog and digital out (digital adapter dependent)
I tested HTC adapter, Apple USB C audio adapter, Google USB C audio adapter, and Anker USB C to lightning audio adapter
All are capable 24bit/384kHz as well
Hello, I would like to ask, why with official original USBC to jack adapter is not listed 8T as compatible device?
OnePlus Type-C to 3.5mm Adapter
www.oneplus.com
I've tried very cheap premiumcord one and it's very noisy even without playing anything. So I would like to try original adapter, there isn't any different on oneplus site for 8 or 8T, why's that?
Thanks
Has anyone give an adapter like this a try?

Thanks, if anyone finds a working one let me know.
The one for Pixel (digital) is good also
24bit/384kHz supported
I've bought just generic from aliexpress, can't say much about it's sound quality as i don't use it
Just to add to this information, I purchased the Google USB C to 3.5 adapter and it works great. I also purchased this one off of Amazon and works equally as well. USB Type C to 3.5mm Female Headphone Jack Adapter
I went and bought a Samsung USB-C headphone adapter after I lost two previous OnePlus adapters with my 6T. Well, it worked flawlessly until I ended up losing it as well. Bought mine from BestBuy.
