Update to. 224 or stay at. 193 and wait the next one? - Huawei P30 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi P30 Pro users,
I have read here and there that the. 224 update are messing up the photo quality and apparently mainly when taken during dark scene and/or zooming.
On the other side it update security patch and smoothness.
As I am not worried about security and as I feel my P30 very very smooth for my usage at least.
Could you confirm the bad side and give me your point of view?
Update or Wait?
Many thanks in advance ?

I've updated to 224 and the photos are fine on mine...

You won't get any other updates if you don't install .224

In every case it's better if you update, photo quality it's strange because digital zoom between 1-5x break shot (on lowlight become dark) and in lowlight I have the impression that sees less. Hope better with upcoming emui10

Nokia 8 or huawei p10 or something else ?

Hi guys !
I need your opinions on a new phone, for a long time i've been waiting for a phone to come to satisfy most of my needs... I don't need much but one thing i always wanted was clean stock android, a decent camera and if possible sd reader because i like having music on my phone.
Most of the phones that came out have custom roms and even though that they were good i didnt get them. Until Nokia 8 was announced which i saw that has almost all the ticks for me (im still using a nexus 4 from 2012 lol)
The only thing that i wanted is if the camera is at least decent because for simiral money i can get a p10 but dont like the idea of EMUI and because of the software updates
I saw reviews about Nokia 8 and everyone was saying that as a device is ok, also i saw that using the Google Camera Apk gets better photos so that means there is potential for the camera
If someone has the phone already give some feedback in general because im still waiting for Nokia 8 to arrive in Cyprus
Thanks and sorry for the long post !
We tested with my friend p10 plus camera vs nokia 8.
P10 plus have better photo options so it can make better image, but the difference was so small that can only be noticeable when zooming the image to max in screen.
Test was made dark and both phones was set to iso 400 and 300 etc...
When settings where full auto..thep10 plus makes very much noise compared to nokia, so the cropped image was not so clear as nokia.
Nokia max iso speed is 1600.
P10 plus is 3200.
So if take fast pic in low light without limiting iso speed nokia wins in camera.
Im waiting for update if the camera is going to have full manual so i can take shots with long exposure, now its limited to about 1s.
But overall im very happy with this...i can even watch vr xxx.

Blurry photos of (slightly) moving objects. Advice?

Hello everyone,
I am really frustrated with this devices ability to take any other photo outside landscapes, stones and any other stationary thing.
The camera start slow, takes photos really slowly and there is absolutely no focus. The memories of going to the pool... Ruined. Selfies... Ruined. Photos of my dog... Ruined. It is REALLY annoying.
I have the L29 C432 (Germany) with EMUI 8.1.0.161. 4D focus is activated (but I don't think it is working), Master Ai makes things worse because it takes a second to determine the scene (and switches to portrait when exactly when I want to snap the photo).
Will updating to EMUI 9 help? Should I root and flash AOSP???
I have the unlock code, but didn't use it until now.
Thanks in advance for your help!
I have the same German version, though I have updated to Pie. I say updated and not upgraded.
The camera to horrible for moving object. 4D focus does nothing to help. You may try changing to the low resolution. I honest do not know why this phone gets good reviews from the camera. My iphone 6 took better photos. My 20015 motorola X pure took better photos. Then Nexus 6P took much better photos.
Literally the ONLY thing this phone is good at is very low light. That's it. The rest is crap, especially for what this phone costs.

Yes this is the main problem with this camera, using pro settings helps, but if have to set every time the speed and iso you will loose the moment...
Like you've said, pro mode is only for "arranged" photoshooting. Is the Google camera app, in its current state a good alternative? Will an AOSP firmware make a difference (because it should be lighter and faster)?
@remusgod86
Use Pro Mode next time and manual exposure time, 1/500 or shorter = 1/640 and other setting on "auto".
Settings of my sample - exposure time = 1/1000 - other = Auto

like he said, in that case, he would lose the moment.
Also, IMO that photo looks horrible. So un-sharp it looks like it was taken through a water lens. I think my old motorola razr got more detail than that.
or buy a "camera"...
settings: ISO200 1/200 f10
The "camera" can take pictures with the flash in completely dark conditions.
a flash will freeze everything!

@starbase64 thanks for the exposure tip. I'll try it.
Regarding the "camera" advice, I will suppose that you mean a handheld or a dslr. I don't want dslr level photos. What I want, is to take USABLE photos with "the world's best smartphone camera". Which was more than possible with my 3 year old Galaxy S6 Edge+.
@remusgod86
the simplest way is go back to galaxy s6 EDGE+

The camera issue is known since the .156 firmware which is broke the camera. Since then no 4D predictive focus, night mode is worst, overall picture quality in photo mode bad. I'm in the same boat as you, I have got 4 updates but the camera issue is still not fixed! I'm also really upset.
My negative feelings regarding this device seem to have brought it to its doom. My wife dropped it on tile flooring and the display cracked in the worst way possible. Just ordered a Poco F1 (on which I will install the Google Camera App) to use until next year (after CES).
I am still really disappointed with Huawei and I feel that it is becoming the "new Samsung", in regards to the business model. It is sad, because in my eyes, they make the best hardware (the Mate series of phones and laptops) on the market, but their slow, bloated and buggy software/-updates make them noncompetitive.
I thank you for your advice and wish you all good luck.
PS- maybe we'll see each other on the Poco forums
Hi Guys,
I'm interested in the P20 Pro for its camera tech. Most pics I take will be of family kids and pets etc so lots of movement unfortunately. I'm worried about the comments above. Is this everybody's experience with lots of motion blur or is it maybe restricted to certain handsets?
Thanks

It's more like the camera app is broken for certain firmware versions. Most of the people reported the issue starting with version 156. For me, I'm still with version 155 and the camera is awesome. Best phone camera I've ever use. That's it. Comparing to my DSLR, the AI photo editing is a little bit overdone. Maybe it's just my taste, but comparing with other phones, this is the best for now. Maybe Mate20 Pro could be better but I haven't try it out yet.

Honesty, you would be nuts to buy this phone. I was also nuts and definitely regret buying. I "try" to use it a lot to capture moments from my 2 month old baby. So.. he barely moves at all, yet that tiny amount of moment is too much for this horrid phone.
If you hold perfectly still, you "might" be able to get an ok image.
Each update makes the camera even worse. Huawei also offers basically zero tech support to solve any issues. DO NOT DO IT!!!!
Just buy a pixel 3 XL. It's cheaper (marginally), the camera app is massively better AND you will actually get real software updates as soon as they come out.
Not to mention, you get unlimited photo storage at full resolution.
I have been searching for someone to trade a pixel for this crap box, but as you can imagine... no takers so far.
If anyone tells you the camera on the P20 Pro is amazing then, frankly, they're talking rubbish. The sensor is big, it has optical zoom and the Night Mode sometimes produces some nice results. That's about it.
If you want a phone with a good camera and you're *not* the sort of person who sees a phone as a pro photographer tinkering tool (that you'll only ever use in Pro mode and only ever shoot in raw with) then, honestly, there are so many phones that are better than the P20 Pro at capturing fleeting moments. I have a P20 Pro, a 10S Max and a Pixel 2 and both of those latter two phones are so much better at capturing spontaneous, clean shots in auto mode that I often don't even bother using the P20 Pro for its camera at all when I'm out and about. Huawei's image processing is smeary and destructive and the camera is frankly incapable of capturing human beings doing anything with any semblance of movement in anything but ideal light.
Most of the "see, it *is* good" photos people upload to demonstrate the camera's qualities are in beautiful warm light with stunning vistas or architecture that even a potato could do a good job with.
I've bought enough phones this year to be comfident about what 'good' or 'bad' is within the current flasghip phone space and if any phone reaffirms my belief that DxOmark are completely full of sh*t then it's this phone.
I think all the free devices Huawei hand out to social media influencers is having a 'Kool Aid effect' on consumers to be honest. The sulky comments these Huawei flat-earthers often spout along the lines of 'well go back to your old phone then' - as if only positive comments need apply - reinforce my belief that people are suffering a zombie effect driven by either marketing or cost-justification.
What I will say is that I really like the overall hardware on the P20 Pro, and that's the only reason I keep hold of it. Would I buy a Mate 20 Pro for its photography process based on the views of the 'reviewers' so far? HELL NO.

Picture quality has gone down with recent updates

Is it just me or did the picture quality suffer with recent updates?
I'm on the 185, exposure and most importantly colors have suffered greatly, at least in my own experience. The most difference I see is when there's a human being in the frame, skin color always looks way too pale, some of the pictures look as if it has a gray and white filter applied on it. My Mate 20 Pro was more reliable than the P30 Pro, always took great pictures with vibrant colors, matter of fact, I just saw a video comparing both phones running on their latest software versions, and the Mate 20 Pro won in every single scenario.
I was looking forward to the Mate 30 Pro's announcement, hoping they'll ditch the RYYB sensor, but with them not getting a Google license for it, I'm thinking about going back to the Mate 20 Pro. As much as I love this phone, the focusing issues and the inconsistent RYYB sensor are pushing me into looking at other devices.
You're right...color science was completely berserk and it made me mad....good news however is I got an update of 193 (adds selifie nightmode to no effect) and it's waaay better with my brief testing!
Good job Huawei! I'll test more under daytime situation but so far looks promising
Edit
Ok after testing a lot more, it's improved a lot but still gives the artificial contrast pic.
I've just installed gcam and taking pics with it for human subjects..... hopefully mate 30 pro will fix this else it's note 10 for me.
Gcam link please!?

If Mate 30 Pro doesn't get licensed by Google and most importantly doesn't get rid of the RYYB sensor, then I will definitely not be upgrading to it, instead, and I said before, I would gladly downgrade to last year's Mate 20 Pro.
I do hope that they did improve the colors with the 193 update, because as of right now, pictures look awful, and no matter how much I try to edit them using Snapseed, I can't get the pictures I wanted because they were lifeless to begin with.
i'm loving the RYYB sensor
i'm hoping they extend it to the zoom sensor next
i dont seem to be getting your issue at all.
In fact my wife insisted we use my P30 Pro for holiday pictures instead of her Samsung as it just came out so much better.
Edit: I do get your issue in lowlight with the zoom lens, but thats not using the RYYB sensor at all

Question Did Mi 11 Ultra receive ANY camera updates until now?

I have the Indian version running at v12.5.2.
But from what I have heard even the CN version with v12.5.11 has received little to no real camera updates (improving HDR, foliage processing, zoom performance, better close focus, UWA night mode, rear display functions, better stabilization for 5x-15x zoom video etc.)
Here are some of my observations so far:
Photos taken now seem to have really aggressive noise reduction and sharpening causing a little painterly/watercolory look when I zoom in to pixel level details and examine.
Foliage also appears sort of artificial and a bit unnatural.
The photo is sometimes a bit underexposed or overexposed.
Color science can be improved by a TON.
The HDR algorithm makes things look quite flat.
Color-depth also seems to be lacking because of the raising of the shadows a bit too much.
Greens are too light-green, blues at times are not dark enough.
Generally colors are not dark enough, and so the photos look a bit flatter.
Also on pixel peeping, I cannot see enough micro-contrasts, micro-colors etc. Colors are sorta flattened.
Tapping to focus, does not respond really well. Also the sun icon that appears to help you adjust exposure does not appear sometimes.
There is so much room for improvement. It is quite inconsistent.
Even my Pixel 2XL is often taking cleaner pics with better colors and details.
I'm waiting for the cam updates.
I heard even the 13 DXO optimizations they promised in v12.5.4 have not yet been implemented.
Have any of you (Mi 11 Ultra owners) received any updates that has improved the cam?

From my experience with my Mi11 Ultra (originally CN version) camera performance has been improved quite a bit. But then I'm in Xiaomi.EU weekly which is based on CN weeklies.
I read in many forums that indeed it seems the official stable ROMs are a bit behind, though.
For myself I cannot complain about the camera performance and for me it has been improved quite a bit from the original CN ROM (dunno, was that 12.5.2? Don't remember) to today's weeklies....

Question Disappointing daylight photo quality

Hello
For different reasons, I had to upgrade my vanilla S20 to vanilla S23 (though I was not entirely convinced to).
Although the phone runs incredibly smooth, the battery life is amazing, screen is the best I've ever seen, the most important phone aspect for me is the camera video and photo quality, especially during the daytime.
Videos are amazing from S23 and way better than S20's, especially in terms of stabilization.
However, the daylight photos, from all cameras leaves A LOT to be desired. No matter what photo is it - well lit room, landscape, greenery, plants, moving objects, from both main and Telephoto camera are noticeably WORSE than from S20 during daytime.
Photos are noisy as hell, does not have that much details and has too much oversharpening applied. Even using fake 1,1 "tele" lens from S20, the resolved details during the daytime are just better on S20, on all available zoom ranges. Oversharpening on S23 is so strong that it literally kills some finest details sometimes and makes all photos look artificial and unnatural. S20 photos, compared to S23 look as if it S20 was from far future compared to S23.
I am incredibly disappointed as I was expecting A LOT more from phone of that kind. S20 photos are just amazing and I expected something either similar or better.
Is there any way to reduce the oversharpening and smoothen the photos so that they are not that noisy? Or maybe force S20's camera algorithms to S23?
Expert RAW is a no go for me as it takes too much time to play with to take photo. It also processes these photos too much.
Thanks,
Maciej
I came from pixel 7 and I am also dissaponted a lot from the camera although I wouldn't say my photos have noise. It's this Overusaturation that Samsung does( I have turned off scene optimizer) that gets on my nerves. Also night photos are not good. I'm thinking of switching back to pixel.

Wow, thank you for reply!
I've been looking for something like this, although I'm not entirely convinced if there are enough options regarding eg. noise. Nevertheless, I will surely try it out and share my findings
Kindest regards,
Maciej
I have played with the Camera Assistant app and it helped a little bit indeed, but the quality is still far from perfect.
No matter what "Smoothening" level I select, there is still visible noise, but more or less "smudged" based on "Smoothening" settings. Finest details are also lost when any "Smoothening" is enabled (even the medium option).
Although there is some visible changes with Camera Assistant, I still preffer S20's photos as they are both detailed and noise-free.
I hope Samsung improves the Camera, because this is not what people should expect from the top tier Android flagships. Too bad is that March security patch does NOT include any Camera improvements.
You can also try to switch off Scene Optimizer or use Pro mode to take photos

Thank you for your reply.
Scene optimizer has been off since I first launched the camera. On pro mode the results are moreless the same - very noisy and tons of artificial oversharpening.
I've had an opportunity to compare my shots from last year's S22. I think there is less noise from S22 shots, so I believe this will get fixed by Samsung in the near future. BTW - S22's photos are still worse than my old S20's and that's the major reason I decided not to purchase S22 year ago.
I shoot and edit in RAW/DNG only. I like the S23 photo compared to my S21 phone.
Do you use Pro mode then?
Hi,
I have the same issue, as per the flagship tag, the photo quality is not that much great I would say.
Usually people taking photos just point and shoot no other special settings changes.
This camera taking 2 to 3MB picture with 12MP camera but too much noise and little blurry as well.
When I switch to 50MP 3:4mode then picture is capturing little sharpen as compared to the above 12MP camera, but it has very large size of picture around 8 to 12MB.
Even banana shape are also capturing specially on humans head.
I'm very disappointed with the camera.
If I talk about overall phone except camera then this is the best phone I have ever seen.
I don't know why every YouTuber is telling lie to us in camera department, they are saying camera is much better then the iPhone or Pixel but the real truth is this phone has very poor camera specially while capturing the photos.
My brother have Realme 9pro+ and he has taken photos on my daughter's birthday and I have taken also and I'm surprised when I saw the quality of his phone's camera photo, very sharp, no noise good quality and size is also not that much.
Thinking to buy pixel 7 or some other flagship kind of phone in exchange of this S23 because I don't this so Samsung will push the camera update on this as they are very much focused on 23ultra and they have bought every YouTuber mouth as well.
I'm very happy with the camera quality so far. This month we should receive a major camera update and it will get only better with time. I have compared the gcam output with the Samsung camera app and gcam is significantly worse. And yes I have used the config file as described.
I truly hope this match update will indeed improve the quality of the camera as this is simply bad now.
Moreover - I have also found many other issues as I keep using my S23 as a daily driver.
First - the video stabilization simply does not work. It did work once released and it was actually one of major improvements that made me amazed, but it seems like february (or march) security patch has simply destroyed this feature. The videos are completely without ANY kind of stabilization.
Second - I have noticed that the Super Slow Motion mode has a HUGE step back when compared to S20. I love this feature as this allows you, without any professional hardware, to capture interesting physical phenomenoms using just your phone, such as lighting up the lighter, break the glass/ice, or even see how the little bees' wings work. These kind of videos have always been unique to Samsung and I find them extremely interesting and I'm a huge fan of these.
While S20 did capture the real 960 frames for 1 second (quite a long of time for a smartphone), S23 captures only half a second and... it's certainly NOT 960 FPS, but rather 480 FPS artificially enriched to 960 FPS by the software.
The effect is that you can't see all the phenomenoms - bees are wingless, the glass breaks unnaturally (you clearly see it's more AI work than actual capture). I'm terribly disappointed.
Honestly I doubt this upcoming March camera patch will solve that many issues and I'm extremely disappointed that 1000 EUR phone is such a garbage in terms of camera. I agree with @Normas Interruptor
If I talk about overall phone except camera then this is the best phone I have ever seen.

But the truth is that you can charge your battery if it's empty, you can still use the phone if it lag sometimes, you can play the games if you don't have full details. But you can't repair damaged and bad photo. Period.
