XZ2 H8296 will not root. - Sony Xperia XZ2 Questions & Answers

Hi all. I have been trying to twrp and root my XZ2 for a week now with no success. I have the H8296 variant that came with the HK firmware but I messed that up so bad I had to fully flash another FW, specifically H8296_9.0_52.0.A.11.32_India. I'm in the USA but this was the latest FW I can find to download. I was unable to flash the US h8266 FW or any h8266 FWs...
Anyway, this is where I am at, stock FW as said above, android 9. I've followed every tutorial I can find on how to twrp and root. I can get to twrp no problem then after magisk is flashed all I get is boot loops. Something that is not mentioned anywhere is the very first option twrp asks about. "keep filesystem read only" or something along those lines. No where in any of the tutorials say what to do here. I've tried both options with no luck. I'm just at my wits end and feel like there's something wrong with my hardware. I've been rooting android since the droid 1 days, so this isn't new to me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
(BTW I am on linux)

My H8296 is happy.
And the H8266 firmware did run fine too.
(Got delivered with hong Kong or Taiwan firmware)

What are you using to to flash to H8266? I've tried many versions of the xperia flasher and keep getting the "wrong device" error. I still cant even get root. Only bootloops.... Any advice based from my previous post?

Same.. Newflasher was giving me an error. I finally got it to flash the latest H8266 tonight! So I went ahead and tried to install TWRP and root again following your post. I got to "Advanced menu -> "Install recovery ramdisk" -> Choose twrp.img" then when rebooting back into TWRP its stuck on the Teamwin logo even after running " fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img" again as specified. The phone still boots into android amazingly, so thats nice. lol
Any tips for when stuck at this point?
Thanks!

Yes, I've read this post in geat detail many times looking for where I messed up haha. I did read the "dont flash TWRP" thing and thought it meant dont flash twrp from fastboot XD. OK, well I'll try and flash Magisk from the "fastboot boot twrp" and see if it bootloops like always.
EDIT: IT WORKED! Finally have a rooted stock rom. What a week. lol

ALE-L21 Bootloop after OTA last night?

Hello all,
I've rooted my P8Lite L21 using the custom recovery method, flashed the supersu.zip, then restored the original recovery.
Yesterday I had an OTA and now phone reboot once during system boot, and at the second time it hangs during boot.
What can I do to recover this? I have stock recovery, and when I try to VOLDOWN+POWER it never goes to fastboot. (last time I had to use adb reboot-bootloader but now I can't reach system\adb..)
Can you help?
Thanks, cheers,

Hello,
You can boot to fastboot with this method:
Connect phone with PC then power off
Now push two buttons VOLDOWN+POWER+MicroUSB now you can install any stock ROM with fastboot commands and suitable *.img(boot.img, cust.img, system.img)
P.S
What OTA(number) arrive to you?

It's Portuguese\Europe, Single SIM.
I'm downloading "Huawei P8 Lite ALE-L21 V100R001C432B171 (Europe)". Is this flashable from fastboot? Yes, i'm unlocked. Does it need the hiSuite or fastboot.exe will suffice?

Try this. Use Huawei update extractor in forum xda have link to it. Open the UPDATE.APP and extract the following files: Recovery.img, Boot.img, Cust.img, System.img
Then use fastboot commands to flash B171 ROM

Hi there,
I have a similar problem: bootloop!
I'm comming from B170 and installed 7 HD 1.2 ROM and got some errors, I thougt it would be an good to go the long way to B008 or better B010. After so searching I found: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64483642&postcount=43
- did not step 1 an under-pressed flashing recovery in step 2 and 3, thought I could yet use TWRP.
Obviously, that was the mistake.
At step 4 I recognized that I have to do step 1 to go on.
that worked an I copied the update.zip to internal card, initialised the update.
Not sure it got to 100% but think so.
Result bootloop, can't get to recovery, only fastboot
Tried to flash every thing: B052, B170, and 136a, even the boot.img and recovery.img of B010 and B008
no errors but still bootloop.
PLEASE HELP!!
is there a full version of B080 somewhere to flash by fastboot? or any options to flash the update.zip of B080 again?
All other proposals are welcome!

First 7 HD 1.2 ROM work only over the B010!!!
Second in this archive have the instructions to install Beta B008 why you not did everything described in the instructions?
Third when install stock firmware RECOVERY must be original not TWRP!!!
Now you must install stok recovery, make hard reset then install B052
After that you can install every stock firmware for your region! or follow the instruction to install B008=>B010=>7 HD 1.2 ROM

Hm, this is very strange!
What device do you have? and which region use?
adb reboot recovery --- says: error: device '(null)' not found
if I try with serialnumber
adb -s W3D7XXXXXXXX reboot recovery ---- says error: device 'W3D7XXXXXXXX' not found
but ---- fastboot devices ----says at the same time: W3D7XXXXXXXX

PRA-LX1 Bricked (Command not allowed, package info failed)

My device: PRA-LX1 (Dual SIM version)
Got bricked. I was installing Google APPS on EMUI (Dumb) and it just kept on looping and restarting.
I decided to try the rescue zip and when I successfully restore it, it boots back to TWRP after I reboot to system.
My recoverys: TWRP (installed on recovery2) and Stock EMUI Recovery (installed on recovery)
Bootloader: Unlocked
Fastboot: Command not allowed
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hello, is the FRP status on fastboot mode LOCKED or UNLOCKED
if it's UNLOCKED then you can unbrick it using fastboot to flash boot.img system.img and do a full wipe of your data partition.

I already booted, that's good news!
Now I've got a problem. The famous unbrick guide everyone uses - the firmware is buggy for me.
Fingerprint scanner doesn't work - camera doesn't work and audio doesn't work.
I think this is a problem with the firmware as they are more models of the PRA-LX1?
Btw, how do I find mine?
Thanks
My model is the Europe unlocked dual sim one

I'm experiencing the same thing right now with my PRA-LA1 and the only way that I found to make it works is to install a TWRP recovery and root it. But I have a lot of bugs after that I've already created a thread for that if someone can help

I Soft Bricked my P10

So, I tried to update my P10 (like an idiot) and obviously failed leaving me in a bootloop, I can access fastboot and recovery, but nothing else, I have an unlocked bootloader too, what can I do to solve this? My P10 is the VTR-L09C605B166 variant that I tried to update to the B210 version (Oreo) I just want a real fix I didn't try anything because of the fear of breaking my phone even more, and I don't know if a technician will help me because of my unlocked bootloader and the warnings that appear, please help, thanks in advance.
Are you able to install and boot twrp?
How did you try to update?
For twrp you can use my guide.
You can easily check if you're on Oreo by using fastboot command "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk TWRP.IMG". If it shows a partition length error, you're still on nougat and need to install a nougat twrp with command "fastboot flash recovery TWRP.IMG".
When TWRP work you can proceed with my guide.
But I need to say: without any warranty.
Everything you do can cause a brick even if it should be safe.
Other solution is to try to relock your bootloader (you need your unlock code!) and try a factory reset or restore with eRecovery - this is the official way and works only if nothing is modified in the system.
BTW: B210 isn't Oreo, I think.
B36(X) are Oreo builds.. You must have downloaded some unreleased software :/

You can try it. The recovery within my archives is from VKY, so it should work. The devices are kinda similar. Just download the right firmware for your model (VKY) and region (Cxxx, like C432), and also FullOTA.
It can be possible that my script doesn't work with your phones partitions. If so, please post the TWRP output, then I'm able to rewrite the script for you.
You can do it by yourself if you know the partitions for recovery and recovery on you device.

Did you apply the vbmeta parameters?
Did you tried magisk 19.x? (19 may generate bootloops, I recommend my bundled 18.1)
You can always get the stock boot.img from the boot.sin in the stock firmware (April, the may twrp is not published).
Just unsin.exe the file (unsin.exe from XDA).

I've been searching for it for hours now.
The unsin.exe I found already

The latest (without twrp support, because I shared the first build on telegram for testing) is downloadable via Emma.
You could also use xperifirm and newflasher from XDA
In xperifirm you can choose the region, hopefully one region has still the April firmware.
PS: I see notifications for new posts or answers easily in my big threads, but it gets difficulty for the different device sections on XDA (in the app).

xperifirm I can use. But Emma won't recognize the phone obviously as it doesn't boot.
You mentioned the april release. Is that necessary?

Just if you want to install twrp on your phone.
The April twrp may "fastboot boot twrp.img" with broken decryption but an installation would only lead into a not working twrp.

At this moment all I want is to be able to boot it again.
But everytime I try to fastboot a boot.img to the phone I get:
FAILED (remote: 'Failed to load/authenticate boot image: Load Error')

Oh. Maybe 28.0.2 or 28.0.1 are working better?
Did you boot the stock firmware without any modification once first?
Edit:
Interesting
28.0.3 must be so new that even google didn't publish a changelog.

When I got the phone I booted it.
After that I managed to unlock the bootloader.
Then I tried to root it.
And that's when I think I fastbooted the wrong boot.img.

Maybe yes.
I never saw this message. Hmmm.
At least one xz3 user I know from is happy with the twrp.
Weird, very weird.
I whish I could reproduce it.

TWRP worked until I messed up the boot.
When I now try to fastboot flash boot boot.img I get this:
FAILED (remote: 'Error flashing partition : Volume Full')
I managed to get it to boot to twrp. I guess at some time I set-active it to b. Setting it back to a solved the not booting twrp.
Now I used the vbmeta.img from twrp to set vbmeta.
Gonna try rooting it again now.
OS not booting yet.

I recommand flashing the entire firmware via newflasher.
Remove the userdata.sin so you don't wipe your phone.

So, I just found out You're the developer of what I downloaded.
Can I flash this one:
H9436_Customized CE1_1316-3759_52.0.A.3.84_R9B.tar.gz
through newflasher?

You mean my old uploaded firmware?
That's just the last version before Sony changed the DRM
Better you use the 52.0.A.8.25 , it is the April stock firmware and compatible with the newest twrp so far.
I hope it is still available through xperifirm.
Ok, thanks so far. You pointed me in the right direction. Hopefully I get my Xz3 running again. ??

[GUIDE] Mega Unbrick Guide for A Hard Bricked OnePlus 7 Pro

Similar to the previous threads for OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T or OnePlus 6, here are the necessary packages to unbrick/revive a hard bricked OnePlus 7 Pro.
The following hardware revisions are supported:
GM1910: China
GM1911: India
GM1913: Europe
GM1917: Global/US Unlocked
Download: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=294744

In every case, it is possible to upgrade to latest OxygenOS by using full signed zip from this thread via Local Upgrade.
With the device powered off, hold Volume Up & Volume Down buttons to force it to boot to Qualcomm download mode.
Use the most updated signed driver (2.1.2.2 at this moment) to avoid potential issues..
For detailed procedures, please consult the linked threads above. There is no reason to repeat the same thing again.
Make sure the path of the extracted files doesn't contain any non-English character. The tool isn't unicode aware.

HydrogenOS package: 人艱不拆 (OnePlus China forum thread), @trollavin & @Some_Random_Username for the help in mirroring
OxygenOS (EU) package: @MrVoshel
OxygenOS (global) package: @Lucifer6
Reserved for future.
Thank you for this!!
Doesn't this leave you with a Chinese modem (limited LTE bands and roaming configs?) and critical partitions? Wouldn't an international or European tool be more suitable considering that Oxygen zips may not overwrite everything? Or is this just a temporary guide with what we have?

Temp? yes and no, I would say. Better than warranty R&D in days no phone for use.
As far as you can revive the phone from QDL9008 back to HOS/OOS, you now have a chance Again to switch over whatever ROM or OS you want later on.

Please help me, I failed pretty hard and bricked my phone.
I rooted my phone with stock recovery using a patched magisk boot image and all went fine.
Today, I deviced to temporarily boot into twrp to check it out, so I booted into fastboot and used "fastboot boot twrp.img"
and booted into system. I was confused and rebooted but now I was stuck in stock recovery. So I completely flashed TWRP
on boot_a and boot_b and into TWRP I rooted my device. But even now I am always bootlooping into TWRP and can't
get my phone to boot into system.
I tried using the unbrick tool but my device won't show up on my computer, even with the driver installed.
I'm screwed, can someone help?
Can I somehow reflash the stock recovery and revert back to my patched boot image?

Thanks for your replies! I was on OOS 9.5.5 and I tried flashing the twrp/magisk zips but that didn't work either. I also tried applying the stock boot.img to the active slot, but still got the recovery bootloop.
So as my last hope, I wiped all data in recovery mode, rebooted to fastboot and sideloaded the complete stock image from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424
I reconfigured my phone from scratch, rooted with the patched boot image like before and everythings works now. Guess I will not bother with TWRP any time soon.

But I think that these packages will not work on T-mobile 1915!
When I reboot into edl mode, it recognizes the "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008", but then 10 seconds later, the phone automatically boots the the battery display, which disables edl. The same this happens whether I use the vol up+down and plug in, or `adb reboot edl`.
Edit: "How I learned to stop worrying and risk a brick"
Selecting the right COM and hitting start in MSMtool in that 10 second window kept it in edl mode for the duration of the flash.
