Just bought Mi 9 Lite and I have some questions - Xiaomi Mi CC9 / Mi 9 Lite Questions & Answers

Everytime I have had an android smartphone, I unlocked and rooted straight away. I know what benefits unlocking the bootloader and rooting the ROM bring to the whole experience of using the smartphone but I have never actually looked or thought about the negative effects of unlocking and rooting.
I just received my Mi 9 Lite last night and I am just about the unlock its bootloader and get Magisk flashed. But before I do that, I am interested in people's opinion about what they think of rooting their phone.
- Can I root the stock ROM without unlocking the bootloader? I have heard this is possible but no idea how! If yes, does it have any limitations or is it the same as rooting after unlocking the bootloader?
- Does anyone have any other valid reason for not unlocking their device except warranty and maybe system updates? They always warn you about security, system updates and finger print sensors not working etc... is this true?
About the system updates, usually Xiaomi publishes the flashable ROM on their website which I can download and flash it manually so I don't have to worry about missing out on ROM updates.
Warranty wise, I am not too concerned either.
Security wise, I don't think this is an issue too as I always know what I would be flashing and installing on my phone.
Thank you.

I used some rooted device before . Don't no what you need, but, with this phone WITH NO ROOT, it's possible to uninstall or freeze some app, using blokada, you can stop/ block many thing.... and keep a clean and fresh device, with no mod, like out of the box ; )

I'm also getting this phone, can anyone from Europe confirm if Mi 9 Lite supports Carrier Aggregation? (LTE+)

Welp. I tried unlocking yesterday and I got the message saying I need to wait 168 hours. Damn.

One reason to maybe not root/unlock is it can stop NFC payments being made?

Just got my phone and i'm super impressed so far (especially by screen), the performance is surprisingly good aswell. Now waiting 168h for bootloader unlock..

android pay not working on mi5

I am unable to add a credit card to my android pay app. it says that it doesn't recognize the android version installed on the phone. has anyone tried to use any nfc based mobile payment app?.
Damn.. That sucks
Android pay launching in the UK soon and I am gonna be gutted if my Mi5 doesn't support it.
Now on tap doesn't work either. Obviously an issue with the Miui OS. They need to develop Miui for Android 6.0 and not for kit Kat.

Which ROM are you using? It would need to be CTS approved, the global ROM which includes GAPPS should be.
Here are my phone screenshots. I am using the mi5 released in India.

As they mix and match Google Android versions you will be hard pressed to get it to work at all.
I have the same problem. I have the Global ROM too.
I am thinking of installing the EU ROM, but there's nothing confirming it gets Android Pay working yet.
Ah no. This was one of the reasons I bought the phone!!!

I'm hoping there will be a way to officially register the phone or a workaround found.
It would be harsh if it could never have it working,

To be honest it might be awhile. With all the security issues around China based products. You can't blame them for not wanting it on those devices.
I have the same issue, I'm waiting on getting my bootloader unlocked then I will stick CM 13.0 on it and see if it works with CloakRoot. If not I will be selling the device as the only reason it isn't rooted and unlocked to this day was specifically for Android Pay.

Ahh thanks for telling me, Im about to put V7.3.3.0 on using EDL method, apparently Android Pay works with that version, will report back. Bootloader doesn't need to be unlocked to do this.
---------- Post added at 01:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:42 AM ----------
Update: My Mi 5 will not go to EDL mode, i type adb reboot edl and it just reboots as normal, tried 5 times.
Also tried bootloader fastboot oem edl but it says my bootloader needs to be unlocked *confused*
Anyone got an idea or will I have to wait until my bootloader unlock has been granted?

I read they blocked EDL mode with locked bootloader on newer OS versions.
I guess I'll just have to wait until my bootloader is unlocked, is there any way I can put 7.3.3.0 back on? I currently have the dev ROM
Can't get Android pay to work here on my Mi 5 either. Using the xiaomi.eu multilanguage global rom unlock bootloader, miui 7.2.13.0. Rooted.
Somebody mentioned that it worked on china stable V7.3.3.0 but doesn't work on V7.3.4.0. There is a hope!
It would be better if we could find a way to make it work on dev roms.

Root cloak won't work and if I'm not mistaken your rom is rooted by default and you just have to enable it. So that would prevent it from working at all.
We have success people!
Got Android Pay finally working, unlocked bootloader, V7.3.3.0 works with it and passes SafetyNet.
Steps.
Unlock bootloader
Download Fastboot ROM 7.3.3.0 And restore using Fastboot, tutorial and files can be found online, I can give you link if required but its 3.45am right now so I cant be bothered right now.

Nexus 6 stuck in 7.0 but getting montly patches

My N6 is still waiting 7.1.1 OTA, surprisingly, security patches come on schedule, but almost three months after release, OTA is not coming. Yes, I know I can sideload it, but one of the reasons I decided not to root it was not losing the ability of OTA updates.... any hint?
Thanks.

You can flash the stock rom and you will receive OTA . Unlocking bootloader dosen't mean root.
You WILL receive OTA updates just do as follows
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Flash latest fastboot images
3. Lock bootloader - optional.
Make sure you don't keep TWRP recovery. It isn't that good for installing OTA packages via system update.
Please follow the guides if you don't know how to do them. Download the latest one named 7.1.1
Press thanks if i helped

@Pocket_rocket Just a warning though... Unlocking your bootloader will wipe your device.
Use the full OTA image instead. I believe there's no need for an unlocked bootloader then.
https://developers.google.com/android/ota
Edit: a word of caution... If you decide to sideload the OTA, it's not a bad idea to keep your bootloader unlocked. If anything goes wrong along the way, you can then fix it.
And about the update issue. Are you on AT&T? They haven't approved 7.1.1 yet...
Edit 2 (I just woke up, gimme a break ): If you use Android Pay or anything else dependent on SafetyNet, you can't keep your bootloader unlocked (without further tinkering) since that triggers SN.

Hi Didgeridoohan, Mine is now NBD92D (AT&T version and update thru OTA) but I don't see any AT&T logo on the back and my city(HK) does not have any AT&T service. Do you have any idea on this(Actually my Nexus 6 is from Australia).
In addition, if I keep sideload the OTA image N6F26U will cause any problem(except the Android Pay)? As you mention that Google does not approve any 7.1.1 AT&T version(Just tried to sideload N6F26U, it said can't install over a newer version).
Thanks so much in advance.

No. I'm on Vodafone (Spain) but I purchased this phone right on Amazon, so no pesky carrier should be acting as a man in the middle, I guess...
I mean, the phone runs decently well, but, given the fact that 7.1.1 will be the last update for this model, I want it. I wonder if is just a matter of patience or there is some other issue that is preventing my phone to get the OTA.
Thanks.
I have the same issue, m on NBD92D, which seems to ATT only, but there's no AT&T in India. I tried sideloading N6F26U, but it didn't work. Any idea how I can get 7.1, apart from waiting?

Yea look at samfail page.
Verify what softwear version you are on and use appropriate version,
There is no root for 8.0 so you will have to downgrade to a older U3 bootloader to root if on 8.0
Ok Im on oreo 8.0, I have never rooted this phone but looking at the steps on samfail its 3 different versions of it and what im getting is you have to flash them in order but someone says just flash samfailv3, can some one please tell me what bootloader i need, the proper steps, just a complete walkthrough because i dont wanna mess my phone up and i wanna make sure im doing this correctly, thanks in advance or at least tell me what all i need instead of directing me to samfail thread, its alot going on in that thread and my brain cant process it all.

If I downgrade i can prevent bootloop for one, secondly there are many qualities to root, dual speakers, custom roms when they roll out, etc. Reasons y I wanna root it.

This is essentially a RTFM situation. You won't find much help unless you can actually demonstrate something. If you were stuck at a particular step, someone could help you, but you are asking for a walk through for just the first step.
Yes those mods are available to rooted note 8's but do you know how to apply them, or would you be right back here asking for a step-by-step guide for that as well?
Please don't think I (or anyone) is trying to be mean here. You just need to do your own research and figure it out, and if you brick your phone, you brick your phone. That is how many of us learned.
Come back with some actual questions and you will get actual answers. That said, your "how-to" has already been written here
Basically you need to figure out which firmware you have installed, downgrade via ODIN if not compatible, follow the rest of the steps using ODIN, and you'll have root. If you've rooted a Samsung device before this should not be difficult for you.
STAYING STOCK and safe.
Over the years, the only two reasons I would root my Android phone:
Get rid of ads
Hotspot
With the Note-8, you can modify the settings and get hotspot to work w/out rooting...........there's a thread out there for instructions.
I found an app that controls/eliminates the ads via VPN, runs in the background with very little battery drainage if any at all.
You can also download DnsChanger(Open Source) from the PlayStore and use these DNS Servers from AdGuard to block advertisements, tracking, and phishing globally on your phone.

There's no advantage to root unless you have a custom recovery. Also you don't need root to run custom ROMs, a custom recovery will do all you need, plus most ROMs come rooted.
Point is, I'd rather have a custom recovery over root. The custom recovery will fix a bootloop, flash ROMs, themes, apps and maybe one or two things I'm forgetting.
Lastly, I'm not seeing any custom recoveries for carrier locked Note 8s. Heck, unless I'm missing something, I'm seeing anything for unlocked ones.

It is recommended to try the MTK Auth Bypass Tool. I am not sure whether the third-party link provided by XDA is compliant, so I will not provide it. It should be easy to search for Google.
