After setting it up and trying it for a few days I looked around online and I don't see much specifically about this device and if it can be modified or accessed in unconventional ways. can we root it? I would love to be able to cast to it youtube etc. HDMI out anyone? Has anyone else tinkered with it yet? The '1G+8G' marking on the box seems to suggest it has a 1GB of flash presuming to be for the android things OS and another 8GB of flash for apps or media or caches?

The price was pretty low, $50CAD at best buy, I cant wait to see what people can do to hack it. Other smart displays seem to have USB/ADB/Fastboot connections, I havnt found one on this device yet.

I too would like to see some custom stuff on this cool little clock.

Yessss! It would be nice!

Open smartclock
Hi,
Does anyone know how to open this smartclock thanks.
Regards
Bob

We haven't hacked any google assistant devices yet that I know off, in fact, I dont think we even hacked android things yet. I am sure there is somebody that is trying to hack android things. Btw, youtube can be watched on the clock, by going to something like the weather page > taping weather.com > going to the menu > download app, clicking on the download on the app store logo, going to the menu, support, go to apple support youtube channel, taping the YouTube icon. It's only in 480p, I tried it, I would rather watch on my phone or tablet, also the video will stop and the clock will go back to home if you wait to long without touching the screen or wake up the google assistant. Other than that. Playback is smooth.

I plugged in an android device to the clock, and it came up with some message, I dont remember what itsaid, it was either for adb debugging or transferring files over usb. I think it was transfering files over usb. The usb port does allow data transfer. Plugging in a USB mouse will make a mouse show up and can move for example.

It probably isn't much but you can go to ip.of.smart.clock:8008/setup/eureka_info in a web browser to view the basic info of the device

Home Assistant
It could be great to have some custom home assistant displayed on smart clock screen instead of clock

Apparently it's possible to plug in a keyboard and/or mouse to it via the USB port on the back (a cursor will appear).

Just got one of these myself today. Best Buy had em for 40 bucks. Quite the awesome little thing. I'm really surprised I can't find much for it.
I'll see if maybe I can buy a second one to purposely "break" (just in case), and see if I can get anything working on it. The little screen is good quality and has great sound. Would be cool for a mini emulation station of some kind
Update: Realized mine doesn't have the usb-c port under the rubber feet like other's have stated here its supposed to. Really don't wanna tear into the carpeting around it. I have the exact same model as first post
Plugging in a usb keyboard works for typing
update 2: navigated my way to youtube and tried downloading an apk from a direct link, downloads don't work period
update 3: can not get device recognized by a pc via plugging in USB port on the back to a USB-C port on my laptop, also tried USB-A to USB-A, no results
Update 4 lol: Unlocked the bootloader, had to have device manager search online for the driver, but it found it and installed it just fine. to unlock the bootloader, simply type
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock

Hello KaptinBoxxi,
How did you manage to unlock the bootloader, did you use ADB on computer via USB? or directly via a pluged in keyboard?
I'm a bit new to all of those types of hack but I'm very interested in getting into that since this device is small, cheap, good quality and could be a perfect smart display if there was any abilities to extend the frontend to better use cases.
Thanks

Fastboot via computer. Although, if this is the first device you're picking up, I'd recommend it not be. No one's really done much with cracking/hacking Android Things (the version of Android that runs on this) as it isn't a full version of android. Its heavily stripped down. Grab an old phone that has a ton of support for modding/hacking but isn't exactly the easiest and do that. I'd recommend a Sprint variant of the HTC One M7 if you want a real challenge. I had to find my own custom method to S-OFF the device, unlock the bootloader, then ROM it and root it as no tutorials worked that were currently up and I wasn't willing to pay to unlock it. If that sounds a little too high end for now, get something like an unlock Galaxy S4 or Verizon Galaxy S5 and hope its a Toshiba model so you can unlock the bootloader

Were you able to use adb?
I found a deal on this device and am debating if I should buy it. The thing is, I wanna run Spotify on it without voice commands. ;D

You can use a Python Library called Pychromecast to remotely play media on it.

Thank you for the recommendation. I actually meant that I want to control the music from the screen, though. : )
Installing Spotify should probably be possible if adb is working. But, I would still need to figure out some way to launch Spotify without opening the app over adb every time.

I have posted development related resources over in this thread

Can anyone tell me how install hindi support for the Google assistant?

Initial impressions and notations:
1) It works, finally. As a Mac user, I can say it's certainly nice to have SOMETHING that allows me to move files from my Mac to the tab without going through FTP or HTTP services.
2) With the above said, it's VERY limited. For example, it'll let you delete off the device, however copying to the device is a bit primitive, and it's very limited, like it'll only copy the movie files with the extensions it wants you to be able to copy.
3) Not sure why it doesn't put Movies in the Movies folder (it puts them in "Videos" folder), as with Audio\Songs too. So weird, like one team worked on the project that was completely apart from the rest of the Samsung Android world.
4) The overall functionality seems lagging... and it doesn't offer any sort integration with iTunes or Google Music or any other third party interface... so for music it's utterly worthless faces with competition from Doubletwist....
But overall it's a good very preliminary attempt for Mac integration by Samsung. It's a necessity for them since their #1 competitor which is iPad is very compatible with PC and iPad, in a very user friendly way. Thus far, this is the biggest issue with the Tab 10.1 for me... media sync, and media compatibility. Sammy really has to overcome these before it stands a chance to go mainstream against the iPad.

Nice! It's nothing amazing, but it's something I suppose. If nothing else you can now rename your device through your mac, hahaha. It's worthless for video x-fer to me because it doesn't even use the default movies folder lol.
But hopefully it's a sign that Sammy is getting on board with making syncing easier for us all.

Yeah of course you can move it but do you want to have to go in and move it every time you transfer to it? Easier just to use an FTP app and drop it directly where you want it the first time, hehe.
And I don't like that it only lets you transfer the most common of movies, not formats it doesn't like, haha

It's certainly not ideal to FTP into a device over WiFi (54mbps on average with a Wireless G router), when we have a USB cable mashed into the bottom of the phone (300-400mbps on average). It's convenient to manage syncing of a file here or there via wifi\ftp, but certainly not conducive to large file transfers.
Hopefully since Samsung Kies is available for Mac, a developer will seize the opportunity to adapt an app like Doubletwist to whatever technology Kies uses ... tho my guess is Sammy has a strong position against 3rd party use of it... ugh.
I'd happily pay $10 for a method of USB iTunes Music and VIDEO syncing. Would make my life a lot easier.
I haven't gotten my Tab yet, but will this be essential if I am to root via my Mac? (i.e., will adb connect or see the device on the Mac without the new Kies beta?)
I download and install that kies pkg, but when i connect the SGT only show a "samsung modem" and nothing happen, i disabled usb debug and the tablet say kies is connected but my mac dont do anything, any ideas?
update:
omg what a big jerk haha i didnt see the Kies app forgot this.

Glass control

So being very new to Glass (only got it on Wednesday 25/06) it is my understanding that the firmware after 16 disabled the 'normal' control via the touched? So versions after this are only capable of back and scroll?
Is there anyway of configuring a program like Remodriod or Tablet Remote so you can use the controls from your phone on Glass? Might sound silly as you could just say use your phone for what your doing but I was more thinking of using it to control the likes of YouTube so I log in and obtain my play lists, also it would stop the need to plug in for control via ADB, for which as a newbie to ADB I'm struggling with commands.
I was playing around with Remodriod and it asked me to set the input in Language and input, for which it didn't pop up like it did on my phone, I assume it is because there is no native option for this on Glass and therefore couldn't obtain the screen for it? Would I need to install the language and input options? Of so where can I get it from?
Has anyone else tried this idea?
Regards
Giles

I'm glad you've done your research, it gets old telling people the same things over and over again.
As you mentioned, there was a time where you could easily control most apps with the touchpad, but that functionality has since been removed. Besides, there was no way to enter text without some sort of remote; many people managed to use bluetooth keyboards to achieve this, and the combination worked quite well.
In XE16, Google apparently decided that they wanted to make a clear distinction between Glass and Android controls. Apps that don't implement the Glass-specific gesture listeners can't be controlled at all. Even native Android popup windows don't allow you to choose which button you want to select (even if the Languages and Input popup did show up on Glass, you couldn't select the button).
So here we are today, either using the stripped-down, masked version of Android that Google gives us, or fumbling with ADB commands attempting to get that one video on YouTube to play. But there is hope yet. Google gives us rooted boot images, presumably hoping that we will show them something that they haven't done themselves. This tiny 5.5MB file opens up a ton of possibilities, but someone needs to be the middle man that brings these possibilities to the masses.
Thanks to the beauty of open source, we have a clear model of what needs to be done for Glass to work like so many people wish it would.
Port a working recovery image to flash zips to the Glass system folder (Done)
Modify Superuser to function properly given Glass's limited control set
Modify XposedInstaller in the same manner
I have a proof-of-concept Xposed module for Glass that lets me control the Netflix app with the touchpad. It's dirty, and it takes a lot of work to get working, but the concept is solid. Xposed is an incredibly powerful utility. The end goal is to create a Glass-oriented keyboard (think oldschool arcade video game high score screens - "Enter Your Initials").
While my goal is solid and my intentions are pure, I worry that there is a reason Google didn't do this to begin with.
TLDR; I'm working on it.
Many thanks for the response, so the short answer is no. That's a big shame and I hope I haven't just wasted 1k on a peice of eyewear that needs charging halfway thru the day!
I assume there is no way of going back to version 16?
I think it's strange how little development there is with Glass on XDA (I could be wrong but if you look at the likes of the smart watches there seems to be considerably more development) and how inactive this part of the forum seems? considering the idea and in my eyes (no pun intended) cool Glass is hence why I ordered mine as soon as I could here in the uk, so far I haven't met anyone with one, and I'm still getting some strange looks lol
The things that are possible with Glass are amazing. Really wish they had added a rear facing camera, eyes in the back of my head, no, but I can see behind me lol
I am eager to see your work and I will experiment on trying to build your xposed modules (never tried building an apk before) no harm in learning on what is probably the most expensive peice of tech I own lol

I can't say I'm surprised by the lack of activity. Rooting Glass voids the warranty, and with the high price in addition to so many reported issues, not many people are willing to take that risk at the moment.
If you want to get touch controls back, then you'll need to flash down to XE12. See https://developers.google.com/glass/tools-downloads/system. Please be sure to read any warnings and notices. XE12 still doesn't have many options for keyboard input, but you'll have better luck than using XE16+.
Also, the strange looks won't be going away any time soon

The really frustrating thing with my Glass is that I'm still waiting for Google to get back to me about the 'split framed' version they should of sent me instead of the current standard version I have!
I requested a call from Google shortly after I received them asking the above question but they couldn't find my order, sure enough they have taken my money but can't find my order number, nor my Gmail address or the serial number for my Glass device! A little concerning that Google of all people couldn't find my info! I'm still waiting for an email back 3 days later! Longest Google search in history lol

Rooting beenfits

Hi all
Think it would be about £25-£30 to get all the kit to root the Chromecast, which then will most probably not be used again. Can anyone please explain the benefits of rooting? Such as what the rooted ROM's will give me over official firmware. For example am I able to run XBMC from it?
I have most probably been lucky in the past because it has cost nowt to root my smartphones, tablets etc?
I am all for rooting Chromecast but not sure of the benefits.

No it won't let you run XBMC....
Two most noteworthy benefits to root...One may actually be something you might like.
1 - You get to use the Eureka Whitelist which can allow some apps to work earlier than they they would because Google has delayed whitelisting it. (Screen Mirroring was available to rooted users even before Google announced it because rooted users had it whitelisted while Google waiting until Google IO) What those Apps are varies as they are released and as Google adds them to their list so a comprehensive list is not really possibe.
2 - (And the one that might interest you most since you appear to be in the UK)...Rooted makes it much easier to use VPNs and custom DNS settings so you can access region blocked content without the need for complex settings changes on your router which can sometimes affect other services. As time goes on this may be the most used feature for those not in the US and want to access full content from Netflix and Hulu. or even those in the US who would like access to content that is blacked out in the US and only available in Europe.
In time as more people are able to get root you might find some more developers willing to create apps that take advantage of the rooted CCast but there are Millions of units sold and I'm not sure but I'm betting less than 100K actually have achieved root in the initial hack and perhaps now many more will be able to boost those numbers.
Is that £25-30 including the Chromecast price. Because if you have a memory stick already, the teensy and usb otg Y cable is about £10.

I managed to root my four chromecasts using an A-Star 32U4 micro.
The LEDs don't light up at all during the process and there's no reset button so you have a short a couple of pins, but apart from that it works fine.

Thanks for the reply Tim. No sure what you mean by " there's no reset button so you have a short a couple of pins". I have tried to put the teensy hex file on it but it does not work. Do I need to do this part of rooting? Can you please explain the process of how you rooted your 4 casts?

You need to get the A-Star into bootloader mode in order to load in the HubCap teensy files (I used regular_16664.hex). There's no reset button on the board so you have to short the GND and RST pins twice within 750ms. The board LED kind of pulses when it's in bootloader mode.
Have a read of the docs here: http://www.pololu.com/docs/0J61/5.3
I programmed the board using:
Code:
avrdude -p atmega32u4 -c avr109 -P /dev/ttyACM0 -U flash:w:regular_16664.hex
Perform the root in exactly the same way as in the youtube vid. The only difference is that the LED on the A-Star doesn't flash in the same way as the teensy++ in the vid does. You just have to watch for the Chromecast LED colour change.
Cheers,
Tim

Actually, try the hex files I attached to my post on the HubCap thread.
I've rebuilt them with A-Star 32u4 LED support, so it blinks the same way as the teensy2++ does in the vid.

I used linux, so I'm not sure about using winavr - is it supposed to provide some kind of cygwin-ish shell? Perhaps you need to run it with Admin privileges?
You'll need to change the -P parameter to whatever format windows needs. The user guide suggests "\\\\.\\USBSER000".

Hello people, quick noob question.
I can stream something from a website to my phone but when I mirror my phone to tv, the tv screen goes blank and just hear the sound.
Is this something I can fix with rooting chromecast?

Hi reggaetonero
I have not yet rooted the Chromecast so I don't know what root brings. Sorry I can't help. You might be best either starting a new thread with with your question or maybe posting it here.

Rooting Chromecast won't help in this case as the problem is likely some capability missing from your phone or its ROM.

What a waste of money to root this thing. £20 odd for the teensy £5 odd for the OTG cable. I have sent various posts asking how you view eureka whitelist after root, as well how you use ssh and what the cc password is because when i have tried ssh in putty it asks me for username then password. I may as well have saved my money because all i have are the same apps as what i can get from google. total wast of money.

Google home hub with an "old" tablet

Dears,
My name is Thomas and I bought a Google mini for my home few weeks ago.
I know that Google released a new device called Google home hub, that is a home smart control. It's a beautiful idea, but in Italy is not already released.
My idea is to create with another tablet a smart home control with Google home like Google home hub.
Do you think it is possible to do? Which kind of apk can I download to release it?
Thank you for your help
I've got 2 Nexus 7 2013's that would do this role perfectly. I imagine the "Hub" app is a launcher of sorts, perhaps it will be ripped soon

hope we found the way how to install it on old tablet...

I've been thinking the same thing since the announcement of the Google Home Hub.
I have the original Nexus 7 with charging dock/stand that will be ideal.
Anyone extracted the app?
I would like some easy to use home control screen
Afaik on a Google hub it is not Android, it is good wear os.

It’s not Android OS exactly, it’s “Android Things” powered by Google Assistant, so you can’t install APKs etc... it’s very basic and was made to be this way.
Wondering how difficult it would be for someone, with the proper know how, to make an app the emulated the functions of the home hub. But as an app

Wondering how difficult it would be, for someone with the know how, to make an app that emulated the features of the Home Hub. I get that these companies want to make money peddling more screens, but almost everyone has an old phone or tablet laying around that would be perfect for this.

Home Hub is running it's own Cast OS type system but other smart displays use Android Things. Android Things in fact DOES use APKs. So we shouldn't be looking at the Home Hub for this capability - we need the other smart displays broken down to find this.
Also I'm studying how to recover an old Android tablet and turn it into a Google home hub. Using only the home application of the play store does not turn it into a hub, so you can not command with different user voices and add other family accounts.
No one have found a solution? I have an old Samsung Galaxy tab 3 sitting on my desk, it would be great.
Not suggesting it should be done, but if the home hub has a standard USB docking port, perhaps it might be possible to copy system files with an otg cable connected to a laptop... they have to install the system files somehow, and I doubt that is done via wifi.
Can anyone tell me ?hav there any alternative of google home app(apk) alternative?!
By which we can control google products(chromecast, mini etc) without a google account

You can use home assistant (hass.io) you run the server on another computer and connect it with the Google assistant. Boom
Hi,
The Google Home Hub runs Fuchsia, not Android, Cast OS, or any other operating system Google has created. Fuchsia is a completely different operating system with its own kernel, APIs, and architecture, which (afaik) carries little to no compatibility with Android apps YET. Without a lot of effort, you are unlikely to get the Hub software running on non-hub hardware, let alone non-Fuchsia software.
Best of luck,
Eric Rabil
It would be amazing. Even with a dedicated apk.
Hope to see smtg soon

Can this be done on a tablet?
Ambient mode is being released on some new phones and tablets, perhaps it will eventually get a wider release. And maybe someone will develop a Magisk module to make it work on other models. Here's a link to more details about Ambient mode. This could bring new life my old Nexus 7 and 10.

Smart Display System Dump or APK

Hey, guys - I've been scouring everywhere whether anyone has been able to perform a system dump of a Smart Display device. Since the Home Hub is using Cast as its method of being display I'm almost positive it won't be able to be engineered on old Android tablets or elsewhere.
However, any other Smart Display should be running the Smart Display APK on top of Android Things. If we can get a hold of that I think we may be able to start porting it over to older devices.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm tempted to go purchase a device just to test.
Sadly it seems there isn't much of a hacking community for these devices, and if you want anything, the best option is to simply buy the device yourself and get hacking.
I just purchased a Home mini for this reason, it seems you might have to to the same yourself for the devices that interest you.
(Shame there's no firmware section here, I imagine the few posts it would get would be invaluable)
Hey guys, did you manage to get anywhere with Smart Display APK?

Guys I have a Lenovo Smart Display under my hands. I found the hidden USB Tipe-C port but there's no way to make the PC/Mac to see it.
adb fastboot are not working and there's no settings to enable developer options
Btw this thing is indeed Android Things...
If someone has any idea how to dump the memory this thing I will share the package ASAP and the portings will begin!
I don't know if this will help.

Hey guys,
I have attached the usb-c connector to my pc and have gotten the smart display in fastboot mode (by holding the volume down and applying power). Some fastboot commands work and I have tried installing different recovery.img to the device, but it won't boot them. I have also entered recovery by holding down the up volume button and tried to initiate an adb session, but adb does not respond. I have also tried flashing in qualcomm hs-usb qdloader 9008, by holding both volume up and down and applying power. I have tried a sahara img for qualcomm 625, but the img won't take. I have also tried extracting the imgs from the smart display via fastboot, but no luck. I think it needs to be done in adb.
Does anyone know how to enable developer options in android things?
---------- Post added at 12:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:42 PM ----------
Also, does anyone know how to compile the source from lenovo? If I could get a binary of the imgs, we might be able to flash a modified rom (unlocked bootloader, root, etc).
Hey all, I am looking for a factory image for this device that I can sideload in ADB. Anyone been able to find one?
10 in smart display
Hello fellow androideans. I am wondering if anyone has gotten any further on finding a way to mod the smart display from Lenovo. I have purchased 3, to do some miss to. In this case, I'm sure I will mess up 2 before I get to my 3rd. I will keep checking back to see how we can make these things, our own.
Compile
I have the source code, but I have no idea how to compile it. Any updates?
Did you happen to try the "fastboot oem unlock" or other similar commands? If the bootloader is locked, it will never allow you to flash any sort of image with fastboot.
It may let you "boot" an image, though....
you could try:
"fastboot boot <your_recovery_image.img>"

I am shocked I can't find more people trying to port NestHome / EchoShow firmware to older devices. Google/Amazon should want to help people do this. It would not make any meaningful impact on device sales, and it would incourage platform growth amongst coders.
What about some other Linux smart-display... Something like that has to exist and be easy to put on old devices no? It would be awesome to have a custom smart-display capable of talking to any of the big-4 voice assistants, that we can run on old tablets and phones.
I miss the old days when a computer didn't come with an OS, you bought hardware and software from different companies. How did we allow manufacturers to lockdown OUR devices like this?

I'm shocked no one has been able to pull the APK from any of these devices. Lenovo or any Android Things powered Google Smart Display is running off of an apk and theoretically could work on any device.
Amazon's OS is available here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=amazon.speech.sim but you can only download it from select few Lenovo tablets.

We're hackers and very capable engineers. Most people are not. By locking most of these things down the companies are making it much easier for consumers to understand not to mention support at scale.
Hi,
if you press and hold down powerup an give power you cemt to the basic bootmenü
Hey, I don't know if you guys are aware, but the Lenovo Smart Display was recently unlocked, and the dump of the firmware is available at https : // github . com / deadman96385 / things_mt8167s_som_dump (just remove the spaces). System/system/app does contain DeskClock and AndroidThings, but they don't install/parse respectively on my Moto X4 (Oreo 8.0) directly anyway. But if you can figure something out, that would be great! I've got an old Moto G3 and instead of turning into electronic waste it could actually be useful.

Unfortunately that dump isnt really of much use. Its from the Smart Display 7 from Lenovo which is a different beast. Mediatek processor, and the original Lenovo Smart Displays and the JBL Link View are all Qualcomm. So the process to dump a ROM and the tools would be different

Internal photos are here. Any ideas folks?
https://fccid.io/APILINKVIEW/Internal-Photos/Internal-Photos-3884185
Without being able to get the thing in dev mode or unlocking the bootloader, doesnt seem to be a way of us either dumping, or flashing, a ROM via the USB port. Unless this has changed.
Looks to be a 10-pin interface on the board, no telling if this is standard 10-pin JTAG or not. Might be a way to dump a rom though.
---------- Post added at 12:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:26 AM ----------
Mainboard seems to be the Intrinsyc SD624 Audio Kit board, which has the wifi, BT, and Qualcomm SoC onboard. Probably if someone is able to get dev tools or manuals or intel on this board, that would lead to the tools to dump/extract a ROM.
Or, at a minimum, perhaps a stock / generic development ROM.
Hey Guys, sad to see this project is still on halt. I landed on here with the same idea of trying to put that Lenovo smart clock app/rom onto my old phones and use them as smart clocks instead of letting them sleep in a corner. I had a run through this thread and someone pointed out that the source code for the clock was available at https://smartsupport.lenovo.com/au/en/products/smart/smart-home/smart-clock/za4r/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Software%20and%20Utilities
I had a look at it, and I don't know how to compile it but I am now following through some guides to see the available options to compile it. I have zero knowledge of making roms or apk, and my coding skills are utmost basic, but I don't think it should be super out of reach in 2020. Lets see how it goes, anyone with ideas, please shoot them through!
Cheers
Sounds like very complex development...
I have 3 lenovo 10" smart displays. I purchased them because they are still in store display mode. This mode has the option to test all aspects of the display, gives sound and touch with no issues. I can get into bootloader menu. Only this is as far as I can go. My goal was to set one of these up as just a stand alone android device. Not caring what android version it was running. I thought it would be nice to have a full android tablet available, capable of all android features; by your bed side. If someone is willing to get this going. I would happily send you a Lenovo 10" smart display, so you can do what you like with it.
