Should I change my smartphone? - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

I currently own a Xiaomi mi 8, I love my cell phone but I think it's time to give way to a flagship. My options are the Mi 9T Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S10 +. Which smartphone do you recommend?

Well, if you're happy with xiaomi I guess mi9T pro is a great phone, but if you want something else I whould recommend oneplus 7T or Samsung galaxy S10E if you want a Samsung phone.
But if you're looking for the best bang for your buck I think realme X2 pro is the best option along side OP 7T

I would strongly suggest that you wait until March..at least. This way you can buy one of the many new phones that will feature an Snapdragon 865 processor. Such as the Xiaomi Mi10, Mix 4, One Plus 8, 8T etc.
Moving one generation higher isn't really enough of a difference to justify moving. Plus many of the phones with the very latest processors will also be compatible with 5G., and once these new phones are released the price of current flagships will definitely drop, so it's financially wiser to be patient.
If you search you will see quite a few posts here on XDA , where people discuss how they bought a Mi9T or a Samsung and they wanted to share that they regretted buying a new phone because they were expecting the new phone to have dramatic differences.
By the way, I had also considered selling my mi8 and moving on. But I will definitely wait.

You are absolutely right, it is better to wait a couple of months and get a flagship, and this year all top-of-the-range smartphone will have the screen with a minimum refresh rate of 90Hz

What will your next phone be ?

Hello guys ,
So i was currently thinking of upgrading my oneplus 3
But i couldn't settle on a certain phone , the only 2 phones in my mind would be the oneplus 7 pro and Samsung galaxy s10 plus since both cost the same where i live , let me know what you think guys
I am going to wait for the Pixel 4 and then make a decision..
I would choose the 7 Pro over the S10 Plus for its VFM and screen!
The s10's price is diving so you may be able to pick up a bargain. Depends on your criteria.
Sent from my GM1913 using Tapatalk
Currently using the 3T and will be upgrading to the s10 plus. I'm just waiting for the price of the s10 plus to dip a bit further down. Personally I think the s10 plus is more equipped with features and well rounded.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk
Ordered the Oneplus 7 pro (Almond colour) 8/256, will arrive tomorrow. Very excited.
But will still keep my OP3 with me for as long as it lives.

The S10 plus is a really great phone but i keep getting pulled away due to the below points
1. Touch wiz and the history of updates
2. Developer community always better on one plus devices
3. The notchless screen on the oneplus 7 pro makes it look much appealing the s10 plus screen .

Congrats , let us know what you think when you receive it
I get your point. Samsung is refining oneui to bring it closer to stock android and is increasing update supports for it's flagships, according to latest reports and that's good enough for me.
Oneplus phones surely has more community support, but nowadays phones with stock roms has got so much better that the idea of installing custom roms is becoming less tempting.
The 7 Pro may look more appealing because of it's all screen design, but I still have some reservations about the pop up camera with regards to how long it will remain functional as a moving part.
I'm not trying to convince you as to why the s10 plus is a better phone then the 7 Pro because both phones are great in their own way, I'm just sharing my personal reason why I'm going to get the s10 plus as my next phone.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk
Personally I'm keeping my op3 as long as it's working and not struggling with doing anything. However of it were to die tomorrow I'd be looking at he op7 pro, the Xiaomi black shark 2, or the oppo Reno 10x zoom
Take a look at Xiaomi Mi 9
Zenfone 6 since it will officially receive lineage os. I don't like the size of the phone and just 18W charging but it has the greatest battery life.
If the s10e becomes cheaper and receives lineage os, I'll gladly opt for it.

The pixel devices are always highly priced
I'm looking for a mate 20 pro, I'm waiting for huawei/trump fight to end (I don't want to buy a phone that is not going to have android Q).
Also I'm a little bit annoyed to not be able to unlock bootloader.
But mate 20 pro is what I want, great camera and battery

You have the budget for the S10, so I don't see why you can't buy the Pixel
Right now in India, the smaller pixel 3 is priced lower than the s10. I don't know how much it is in your country.
Pretty sure the smaller pixel 4 variant will be around the same price range.
I sure as hell won't buy a device with a notch and no headphone jack. I am at minority here but those are my requirements for now.
Redmi K20 Pro and Zenfone 6Z are top contenders for my money (I don't want to go back to IPS LCD but might have to). OnePlus phones are naturally out because they decided to "follow trend" and removed headphone jack. OP3 is working fine for my usage and i don't need the best camera, an average camera will do for me so no appeal of Pixel 4 to me at all. So for now, yeah, not many options, K20 pro is choice 1, zenfone 6z being 2nd.
I'm thinking about OP6 as it's the last OP with headphone Jack and notification LED. I know the notch isn't great but for me, small notch + OLED > LCD.
OP7, not the pro version because I definitely do not want a phone with moving parts. No Samsung, I have nothing with the brand...
But as others said before, will keep using my OP3T as long as possible. Fast, two days of battery life, great camera and straight forward; still did not find a good reason for making a switch. ..
I'd buy an iPhone, currently using oneplus 3, lasted for 2years. Still snappy with good battery backup.

Is the passage from OnePlus 6T to this phone worth?

Hello everyone. I have the possibility to pass from an OnePlus 6T to Xiaomi Mi9T Pro without giving additional money (I bought it on Amazon, but I'm still in 30 days of refund period). According to your opinion, is this passage worth?
Only things I regret of my OP6T are the lack of the wide angle camera and the presence of the notch. Thanks for your advices

If you you know how to get rid of all the spyware (by flashing EU ROM or AOSP ) then yes. absolutely.
I sold my OnePlus 7plus for this and haven't looked back.
Depends what you're after but I find this perfect for me and suits all my needs

Sorry for stupid question. I'm in italy also and I'm not sure if to buy this or no. Those roms here that are K20 PRO, are valid for 9T PRO also? They are the same phone by chance? Why the naming confusion tho'

True, but software is compatible since hardware is exactly the same. Chinese phone has less LTE bands, thats all.
ROMs for K20 pro can be installed on mi 9t pro and vice versa. thats why it says k20 pro / mi 9t pro in forum thread name
I Wouldn't recommend. OnePlus 6t is a pretty good phone on its own right.

Wow, that's surprising. I have K20 pro, and a OnePlus 7 for my wife. As far as I see the Dual speakers alone are worth the higher price.. The OnePlus 7 speakers absolutely cream my K20PRO speaker in all sense.. Not that I don't love my K20pro. But hearing the YouTube or Netflix on 7 is really awesome...
But screen is about even.

I have both the k20 pro an the OP7 Pro. If you are willing to compromise and want to cut cost the k20 pro is a good choice. The OP 7 pro did cost me about £150-200 more and the difference is visible. The 90hz screen for me takes everything. I even used a 75hz mod for the k20 pro which made a gap slimmer but I still wouldn't sell my OP over the k20 pro. Not sure about the 6T sorry, I didn't have that, but for me the SDG855 performance difference was enough to change.
I have the 6T and have been looking at the 9T for a while, only thing holding me back is OxygenOS and getting fast frequent updates with Android 10 coming ,
Mi 9T has more features in the software so am torn between the two. Would probably enjoy the cameras on the 9T better and bigger battery, notchless display.
It's a difficult one alright

Nah 9t pro is cheaper. I'm talking about european price. (about 100€)
Compared to standard oneplus 7 its better. First it's cheaper, the camera is better in my eyes and battery is also bigger. It's notchless but it depends on what you like.
First i thought about buying the OnePlus 7 pro, but it's too big for me and I don't like the curved display.
I also thought the "elevator" camera is a con, but I try it now.
Mi 9T Pro is the better OnePlus 7 pro for me. I don't care about 90hz display.
Custom rom support is very bad with Standard OP7 so for some people it's also a con.

I'm on the fence about the Mi 9T Pro and the OP 7 Pro. I think the device doesn't justify the price for the OP, I think that for that price it's missing wireless charging at least.
I just can't decide. The headphone output is kinda important, so is the screen. I'm torn about this two devices. Without screen/headphone jack which one would you choose just by build quality and overall performance?
Updates are very important too, which one has better community and dev support?

Not sure about the custom firmware support for the OP 7Pro. The factory firmware is good enough in my eyes didn't even think about flashing another firmware on it. I guess you can check the support yourself here on XDA if its important for you. The cons I found with the OP is:
- Its larger then the k20 pro and heavier as well, with small hand you would need to get use to it
- It has a curved screen which I'm also not a fan of - hard to find proper screen protection, the only one worked for me was the film
- Battery usage is a bit behind than the k20 pro even the size should be the same on paper - could be due to the 90hz screen (I tried to switch it off but didn't make much difference). Still last me a day and a half easy though.
I think on software update Oneplus would provide more frequent updates for the 7pro (I had 5-6 updates since I have the phone). I had a poco f1 before and xiaomi only gave 1 update in every month or 2 months. As the phone reached the 1 year mark the updates came less frequent...
Apart of the above I think its is snappier and a better build then the k20 pro. I bought mine sort of 2nd hand not brand new (the k20 pro was also 2nd hand) I wouldn't pay the full price for the OP 7pro.
I think which ever phone you would chose you won't be disappointed. The k20 pro is also a good device.
Most of the above is my subjective opinion, people are different and others may find things more important which aren't much for me. GL for your purchase

Thank you, I really appreciate that you took some time to answer. I can get the 6/128 version for 600 usd including warp charger, I still feel it is a lot. And I'm kinda doubtful about the build quality of the Mi 9t Pro.
Is 600 usd a good price and is the warp charger really that useful?

Switching from 5T to 9T - worth it?

I'm on a OnePlus 5T (128gb) and support runs out for this phone in the next months.
Is there anyone who switched from 5T to the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro and can give an advice? Any suggestions?
Size is close, specs are close. 9T has better camera and bigger battery. Also it's possible to get it with 256GB/8GB ram.

I switched from the OP6 to the Mi 9T Pro and i'm really happy with the decision. There are two points to consider, though:
- the 9T Pro is considerably thicker
- oxygenOS is much better/faster/flexible/cleaner than MiUI.

Yup it's definitely worth it. And pick the 8GB 128/256GB if it's available your region.
Also installing a custom rom will not lose its warranty. I find it amazing! If you don't like MIUI you can just install a custom rom right away

I don't think it's worth it. I came from a Galaxy Note 5 2015 and there's a lot of downsides compared to it. The screen on the k20 Pro is very thin and feels like a downgrade. The pixels are less sharp and you can see the dots quite easily. Battery life is okay, 1-2 days with heavy usage. It's quite a weighty phone, hard to hold in one hand. The miui 10 rom lacks a lot of nice features miui 11 has, but currently miui 11 for it is really buggy. (Occasionally reboots, youtube background playback glitches, camera app often stops working).
I think you'll want to go for a bigger screen with higher hz if you want to really upgrade.
I'm also on OP 5T, planning to switch to the 9T as soon as the LineageOS 17 ROM is in good shape.
At first it will feel like a downgrade, I own an OP3 previously. I'd still pick my OP3 over my K20 pro if the OP3 didn't have ridiculous bezels.

If both are running the same ROM, how can it possibly feel like a downgrade if the hardware is superior in every possible way?
From my experience, better camera and battery life, but I miss Oxygen...

There will never be a "BOTH" running OOS bug-free, it will never be the same experience. Spec-wise definitely an upgrade over my OP3, but OOS is what made me say it's a so-so experience. You'll never understand what I'm saying if you've never used your device with OOS extensively for more than 3 years.
Don't let anyone fool you with an essay, if it's between OP5T and 9T Pro there's no match lol, one is 2 years old with old chip while the other runs a 2019 flagships processor.

I understand what you are SAYING, but I will never understand how you are FEELING or why, because I will never use any OS other than LineageOS, and I have 4 devices, 2 phones and 2 tablets, the experience is pretty much the same on the software side.
I switched from 5T to mi9 t pro when it came out. Mi9t pro is obviuosly much faster with better battery life than 5T and better for gaming becuse of the chip etc but in terms of custom roms it is still pretty lacking in comparison to the 5T custom roms which work perfectly but that might have to do with the age of the 5T which has had developers working on it for a long time now. Hope it helps.

I came from a oneplus 6 to k20 pro. And I am still regretting the decision to switch. I would still happily go back to my oneplus 6 any day. And the sole reason being the software.
Oneplus software is way better than MIUI. I unlocked the bootloader and installed pixel experience. Which was fine in relative terms. Unlocking the bootloader created a few problems like breaking Google pay (India) and other UPI payment apps.
There were errors like google camera not functioning properly. The fingerprint sensor straight up sucks on most of the custom roms. Roms have somehow broken the proximity sensor for me during calls. and there are similar issues for almost everyone.
I would humbly suggest you stick with something stock. Or if you can live with MIUI then it's whole another set of arguments to be made. But considering you've used oxygen OS for around 2 years, it's likely you won't like MIUI at all.
ciao!
If you are into gaming and especially emulators then its a no brainer. When using Dolphin my 5T struggled to maintain 60fps whereas 9T has no problems whatsoever.
P.s MiUi is not as bad as some people here make it sound like, give it a try you might like it
Thank you all for your opinions!
I ordered a 9T Pro 8GB/256GB today and will see if it fits. If not, it's always possible to sell it for a good price or maybe even send it back.
I see that people have different opinions on it, that comes from their different habits.
The specs are great and i think the phone can compete with flagships - with this price definitely (buy two of these or one from OnePlus?! ). Software is a thing that can be changed by custom roms and i think i will try MIUI, Lineage, PE and the Oxygen GSI on it and see what's best for me.

I live in India and I'm thinking about getting a new phone. I have two options mostly, buy the OnePlus 8/8 Pro or get a used Note 10 Plus. What should I do? I will get the Exynos version of Note 10. I currently own a Galaxy S10.
oneplus 8 pro is the best android out there for now. saying this cause IMHO (as close to) stock android or oxygenOS is much better than OneUI and will ever be.
I am a Samsung fanboy, so I say get the note 10 as long as you can get one with a snapdragon processor.
dude I'm a s10+ user indian variant imo u should just buy op8 pro coz exynos is the ****tiest flagship processor u can get never buy Samsung flagship in india my biggest regret

Nothing against India at all, but you guys do tend to get ****ty Samsung hardware. ?
Go for the OP 8. I regret getting it. Battery life is...well, it's absolute crap on the S10 Exynos variant.
Keep in mind I'm comparing it to my Pixel 2 XL. The physical difference is only 100mAh less on the S10 but it feels like there's a lemon from your science project barely holding on to dear life in there.

yea bro Samsung is just milking Indians I'm thinking of switching to op8 or op8 pro if i get a good deal for this s10+
You either love Samsung or you hate it i guess ? the oneplus in specs wins it against the Samsung. I still would go for the Samsung. I love the updates they provide the last 2 years. And really happy with all the other stuff. Galaxy buds/galaxy watch. ect
It always amazes me when people want comparison of 2 or more phones nobody mentions the physical dimensions.
I went with S10 because I got the biggest real estate/ screen for the most compact size and still be able to use it one-handed.

General I already regret buying redmi note 9

This phone seems so much better for a better or the same price or lower price
108MP an AMOLED display 120hz even the phone looks much better especially the camera module
good enough chipset
god i regret getting the redmi note 9

Fortunately, I keep thinking that I'll go for either Redmi Note 9 Pro or POCO X3 NFC from last months. But thanks for my "patience skill" so I could save my money to consider this phone.
Edit: Fixing some typos.

i'll probably upgrade in 2 or 3 years to the newest redmi phone if they keep getting out phones like this
this phone is absolutely amazing for the price hopefully redmi note 11 will also be the same if not even better
also poco x3 users are absolutely SEETHING
Using redmi note 7 from 2019, was looking for a good option for upgrade. I guess I got the perfect one, Redmi Note 10 Pro.

I wouldn't say many poco x3 are seething. spec wise is practically the same except the AMOLED and camera. I'm happy with good panel LCD screen on the x3- won't need to worry about burn-in/bleed if one is a heavy gamer. x3 is still one beast of a phone for the price!
Well Redmi Note 10 Pro (Global) and Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite (Global) are the two phones I'm looking for which for the 6/128 GB variant seem to cost just about the same (~265 €). My focus is on:
DualSIM, dedicated microSD, good stabilized video 1080p and possibly also 4k, very good day and ok night pictures, fast cpu/gpu (Antutu over 250k), Fast LTE with Bands 3,20,7,1,32 (8,38,28a), 3.5mm-Jack.
Both devices have those features. Unfortunately no Snapdragon 8 series devices with dedicated microSD and 3.5mm-Jack exist, so I need to stick to this lower mid-range class.
Redmi Note 10 Pro real advantage of 108 Mpx Samsung5K HM2 f/1.9 over 64 Mpx Sony IMX682 Exmor RS f/1.89 needs to be proven by side by side dedicated picture and video test. With GCam probably because of the slightly better processor in the Mi 10T Lite (Snapdragon 750G) it seems possible to activate EIS for 4k Videos. With Snapdragon 732G this seems unlikely to be possible. Also Mi 10T Lite has 3 of the 4 important 5G Bands in my area, could not find info that a Note 10 Pro Snapdragon Upgrade to 5G will be released (Global, the Note 10 5G is based on MediaTek).
So the advantages of Note 10 Pro (AMOLED, 108 Mpx, Radio FM) currently seem less important then those of Mi 10T Lite. I will wait until detailed camera comparisons are available, possibly with GCam for both devices.
EDIT: I need to correct that Mi 10T Lite (Global) according to several reviews on YouTube has no dedicated microSD (only hybrid DualSIM). Many techsheets online seem to have dedicated. This is a bummer and will leave only Redmi Note 10 Pro (Global) as candidate for my next buy.
5x optical zoom would have sold me, guess ill have to wait for another phone

Been using xiaomi devices since redmi 2 prime, their phones are either hit or miss. Sometimes they absolutely cheap out on hardware. My current redmi note 7 has a LCD panel and it shows signs of screen burn. These manufacturers are pumping out phones without worrying about quality and overall experience.

i had the lg v20 and it was supposedly a "flagship lg phone" but it was just a mess the two screen design didn't look at all and there was a lot of burn in
i didn't even know LCD panels can get burn in until i got that phone
Thing is the redmi note 9 variants have good, stable roms by now but it took months and months to get there, which was an exercise in frustration I'm not going to go through again, so I'm perfectly fine with my 9s and will get this one once/if there are solid roms available with all bugs squashed. Not interested in smelly Mi Ui.

The first stable (GSI) ROM was from sooti. Other non GSI ROMs weren't maintained long before you had to switch to another ROM. That's a pain.
I hope the Redmi Note 10 Pro or newer Poco phones will get better community support.

Need to rant again: I do not understand why in every series and also other brands with a better CPU (Snapdragon 8 series) they omit the microSD slot (not even shared) and in most cases also the 3.5mm-Jack. Is Google enforcing this?
The Redmi Note 10 Pro with Snapdragon 888 (865 also ok) and maybe better RAM specs would be awesome.
Don't worry. Exchange it with note 9 pro, you'll get a wholesome discount of 100$ or 9000₹.

Yeah, but why has it more interfaces-expansion-ports/connectivity then Xiaomi top phones? I would pay more and think the CPU, microSD slot and Jack alone would not make the phone much more expensive (like 600 $ or more). At least Redmi K40 Pro with Snapdragon 888 does cost only ca. 460 $ but has no microSD slot and no 3.5mm-Jack. Since everyone, not only Xiaomi, is doing it I do not understand it: why not use the integration of those two features as advantage to the competition? There must be some hidden policy behind this IMHO
Hah: It almost seems Xiaomi did use the strategy I wanted at least for the Poco X3 Pro (PX3P) presented yesterday! It has a shared/hybrid microSD slot and 3.5mm-Jack paired with a Snapdragon 860 - Antutu ~486k. By comparison the Snapdragon 732G in the Redmi Note 10 Pro (RN10P) has Antutu ~288k - Snapdragon 865 has Antutu ~615k and Snapdragon 888 has Antutu ~730k - so not top flagship performance but solid medium/premium territory, while the Snapdragon 732G now seems more budget level: even the Snapdragon 678 in the Redmi Note 10 (available for under 200$) delivers Antutu ~277k.
In addition PX3P has the advantage of UFS Storage 3.1 against UFS Storage 2.2 in RN10P. But it lacks FM Radio, AMOLED and also has no 5G. The "better" POCO F3 also presented yesterday by comparison is a rebranded Redmi K40 Pro (for Global) with Snapdragon 870 and 5G but no microSD (some sheets say it has Independent SD slot) and no 3.5mm-Jack and also good prices. The Poco F2 Pro at least has the 3.5mm-Jack.
Of course the camera in the PX3P seems disadvantaged with 48MP, f/1.79 IMX582 Exmor for the main lense, but fast CPU and memory are attractive for fast video editing etc. I will try to compare reviews with a focus on 4k EIS and 1080p EIS Video.
It's crazy how Xiaomi is coming up with these phones. Xiaomi is just competing with itself for 350USD and below phones right now

I agree. Some small competitors like Realme and Vivo try to deliver similar price/performance, but because much less models will be selled, much lower community support regarding GCam, CustomROMs (like Xiaomi.eu/mi-globe, AOSP/LOS based, etc.) will be available and so in my case much less attractive at similar price.
OnePlus has left this price territory and other interesting devices from Asus, Google, Samsung, Motorola just miss features and/or cost too much in comparison.
The thing I would like to see on sub 350$ Xiaomi phones is OIS (optical image stabilization) paired with gyroscope EIS stabilization to get top notch videos at 1080p or even 4k and at the same time less shaky/blurry images. But it seems Megapixel of the sensor are the stronger (selling) argument for the time being. In my case a top quality 12-18 Megapixel image is more then enough, I dislike the washed out details at zoom 1:1 of Smartphone best resolution pics on a Monitor screen.
