How do I require pin at startup - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

I have a Pixel 4 XL and just like I had on the Note 8 I would like to require a pin at startup. I know the phones encrypted already but I would like that extra layer of security. Does anyone know if such a thing exists on my Pixel 4 XL and could you point me in the right direction please. I've been looking everywhere on settings and I can't find it if it's there. Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

Do you mean in addition to face unlock, you also want a pin to unlock the screen? Or do you just want a PIN to unlock the screen? I don't think the first question is possible without and app or mod. The second one would just require you to not use face unlock, and use a PIN/pattern instead. Hope I explained that clear enough :good:

Settings > Security > Screen Lock
from there select PIN and set any of the other options you desire.
after doing so, the phone will require PIN on reboot or start up.

I believe you need to have a locked bootloader and the phone be encrypted for that option to appear after setting pin/pattern/password lock option. I could be wrong and this could be completely removed for this phone. I unlock bootloader day 1 but I don't see the option

Good chance our phone doesn't do it if you're completely stock and the option isn't there.
Edit: found this regarding the pixel and I imagine it's accurate for the 4.

You get a prompt on that phone before the lock screen and android boot? Pin after reboot is there and requires you apply the pin/pattern/password after the phone restarts but that's AT the lock screen and not BEFORE it.
Edit: booted up my recently wiped 2xl and the option isn't there in settings either. I think you're referencing pin after reboot to get through the lock screen, which exists. I'm talking about pin to boot the phone, which is before android even boots up.

Look back a bit at my other post with a link, it doesn't look like it's an option on the pixels because how encryption is done on them compared to other devices.

Yes it is. The new encryption works the following way, if you have your device powered off:
Secure-Start on Stock Android is default ever since the Android 10 update. It can't be deactivate, thus no longer be activated manually.
Until the lock screen appears on pixel 4/4XL, the device simply boots the stock system partition without loading user data, since Android 10 uses a more recent technology for encryption.
If the PIN is then entered on the lock screen, the user data is decrypted, and only then. If you have many apps and/or folders on the home screen of the Launcher, this is especially noticeable, because the first login and building of the home screen then takes much longer than on older Android versions.
There may still be OEMs that change this specific new Android behavior. This is very stupid IMHO. Because if an OEM deliberately disables secure-start as default setting and lets the user decide, it leads to confusion. Just think about it, if a user reads the above change and thinks "oh my device is already in that mode", he wouldn't even look for this option to enable it and run unencrypted.

PIN on booting phone is where you set a SIM PIN so the SIM has to be unlocked on boot.

Greetings. I have a similar problem. My phone starts everything every time I turn it on. All network connections are active. GSM, WIFI, Bluetooth. The pc connection also works! I don't want to enter a sim pin code! There is currently an incoming call even if I do not enter the unlock code. So the phone works on its own without permission! I want the phone to do nothing until I enter the pin code. This is currently just a screen lock, I switch any form. There is no obstacle protection. You can answer a call after stealing your phone! All you need is another sim card. This is not security! My phone Honor 20 is independent. Thanks for the help!

Disable pin on start up?

I have lock set up for pin as I am using my android wear device as a trusted device, so it gets bypassed when my watch is near.
When I have to reboot/power on phone, the boot animation starts and then will ask for my pin. Once the pin is entered the boot animation starts again and completes the start up to lock screen. Does anyone know a way to disable that initial pin? It's pretty annoying... especially if having to do a reboot have changes take effect etc.
Edit: nevermind. I disabled my pin and then re-enabled and now I see the option to have a pin at start up or not.
It turns out that you can turn off PIN on boot but it's enabled by default and it's not obvious how to do it. You have to turn off the PIN (set your security type to None), then re-enable a PIN. At that point it will ask you if you want a PIN on boot or not.

Interesting, I never knew this.
Actually you dont need to remove it then re-do it again
just setting>security>screen lock> type PIN> PIN
then you will see Secure start-up ( Require PIN to start device/ No Thank you)
Thanks, couldn't figure it out on Nexus 6P. All good now.

Thanks!!!! I have the G5 and was googling this very same issue!
Pressing the pin option, as to select it (whether you have it set up already or not) will present that toggle. Many thanks again.

Guess what? You no longer have encryption worth anything. Your data is protected only by password "default_password". If you have TWRP you can verify for yourself.... you can access and read all your files without ever once entering your pin.
More details here
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/47uj5r/twrp_is_decrypting_my_encrypted_data_partition/
The bottom line: if you want the security benefits of encrypted data, you need to enable pin on boot.
i disabled "require password to start device" because if my phone gets lost and runs out of battery and the finders charge it up again and thus Android boots up again, i want my lock screen to be visible so they can see my email to contact me to return it. also - i want to be able to call the phone if lost. this "lost phone" scenario greatly outweighs my need for greater security beyond the normal lockscreen password protection.

my sensitive data is all encrypted in an MS Word 2013 Encrypted Password Protected Document within a password protected Dropbox App with a password protected Phone. they have to get through 3 heavy layers to get to my sensitive data.
also - don't forget about "Find My Phone" with Android Device Manager and Lookout. both would be not work if "require password to start device" upon reboot.

I know it's an older post, but I had to reply on this.
You see "3 heavy layers". I see 0 security layers.
First of all, a password protected phone doesn't stop anyone to hook up your phone to a computer and extract all the data they want from your partitions with adb commands. There goes the "1st layer".
Secondly, a password protected Dropbox app doesn't mean anything if you already downloaded the files on your phone. See the above. You have to download if you want to view and edit the document you mentioned. It will only protect your online data. Here goes your "2nd layer"
And the last one, a password protected Word document? Really? Brute forcing tools are wide avaible to crack Office documents. Security is a joke on this one. There goes your "3rd layer".
Anyhow I do share the same thought with you to let the phone boot into Android in order to call and track a lost phone. But only because I use Cerberus which survives factory resets. Most thieves are not knowledgeable in my opinion, so chances are high I could keep tracking my phone. Anyone who has the knowledge can re-format the phone anyway, so just hoping on the first category petty thieves

You would be amazed at how well that doesn't work. The first steps when stealing a phone is to remove the sim card which makes all teaching apps useless. Then it is a full format and wipe of the device while loading a new os, then depending on the store that bought it they will also change the IMEI of the device.
When someone steals your phone, your info is the last thing they want. It's the device it's self.

I tried this on my Nexus 6p, but it still asks for pin when rebooting. Do you know of any other way to get this removed?
correct fix
Your battery must be at 80% or more and on charger. Enable password lock and check no thanks then using 5 letters and 1 number enter a password. Then scroll down to trust agent and turn off the agents. Now goto lock screen and disable everything by clicking non. Reboot device.

Backup assistant plus process

Hi everyone,
I noticed there are two processes that start on boot called "backup assistant plus" and "authorization assistant". Searching on the web it seems these are apps by Verizon but I have an unlocked nexus by Motorola. What this precesses do? Are our Infos safe?
The problem is that it is not possible to disable them!
Do you have them between your active apps?
Thanx
if you have root, you can delete them.

Thank you, probably you're right. But I don't like to have background processes I can't disable. Expecially if I don't know what they do!
Now I'm kill it every time I reboot. Maybe that will convince me to root!
Do you have any issue with sim pin on startup? Mine doesn't ask me the pin and simply switch off the sim till I unlock my home for the first time.

Nexus 6 lock screen pin, 30 second wait for first wrong pin entry

Ive only had my nexus 6 for a couple of days now. I set a lock screen pin like I always do on every phone Ive ever owned. Typically when i need to punch it in on my lock screen I almost always put it in wrong the first time from trying to do it too fast. Well on the nexus 6 u have to wait 30 seconds before u can try again if u input it wrong even once. I dont know if this is how it's supposed to be or if this is possibly a result of something I did. Either way, how can i get rid of that or at least change it to 3 allowed failed attempts before it makes u wait 30 secs? I tried a xposed module called lockscreen tweak box which supposedly lets u change it to unlimited failed attempts but it did not work. Im assuming because im running 6.0. dont think its compatible with mm yet. I love this phone but im not used to this new high level security along with the high level device encryption. Anybody have any ideas as to how I can fix this? Thank u!

That is not normal. I'm able to retry immediately if my first pin entry is invalid. If you are running a custom ROM, try switching to the stock ROM. If you are on stock ROM, but have made changes to build prop or other system files, try to go back fully stock, and see if problem persists.
Oh, and what @simms22 said - wait 24 hours at least before bumping your thread

i dont use a pin mostly, so dont remember. but i just set a pin and tried, and you are right. when i enter wrong, itll remove what i entered within about 3 seconds, then itll let me try again.
Im on the stock rom right now and other than rooting and unlocking the bootloader i have not made any changes to any system files at all. no xposed, no custom kernel, no viper, no build.prop edits, literally nothing. i flashed a different rom last night and it does it on that one as well. is this something that i can change in the build.prop? or does anyone know where the # of pin attempts is set at on the system level? does the same thing with a pattern and password. i don't get it but its incredibly frustrating.

Make sure Settings -> Security -> Trust Agents -> Smart Lock (Google) is enabled. Had similar issue with PIN timeout on Chroma ROM when "Quick Unlock" feature was enabled. Never changed my PIN.
Dev stated to delete a specific file via TWRP. Did so and Smart Lock was gone from Settings. Google search to the rescue.
I admit I have no idea if this is root cause for you but worth a look to make certain Trust Agent is enabled for Smart Lock. I had no idea this existed until today. Android user ~15 years, rooting etc. whole time.

HELP : Phone asking for PIN instead of Fingerprints after MarshMallow update.

Hi,
I'm in need of help urgently!
Last week I had updated my Note 5 to MarshMallow and it was working fine. I remember the phone had never been off or restarted after the update until today when the battery ran out. Connected to charger and when I turned on the mobile it showed this message :
"Enter PIN instead of using fingerprint recognition after restarting device to protect fingerprints"
Now I've been unlocking screen using fingerprints from the time I got this phone. Unfortunately, I forgot the PIN and now I can't use fingerprints to unlock the screen. After a few failed attempts the wait time keeps increasing and now it has reached 30 minutes.
Is there anyway I can unlock my phone?
Please help ASAP!
Login into this website using your Samsung account

On the MM build, after a reboot you have to use the pin but subsequent times will be fingerprint, I have no idea why they did this. Sorry that happened to you, I have no idea how to get around that other than to keep searching, someone else had had that happen I'm sure.
Yep, I'm screwed, too...
I even kept a list of every iteration of PIN numbers I would ever use (they are generated by an algorithm). I have tried every one - and I am still locked out - with 60 minutes in between tries!
I have very, very important legal documents, notes, and recordings on my phone that I didn't get to backup yet. Unfortunately, most backups do not "dig" well enough under App directories to get all files generated by all Apps. So sad...
And "No", I can't access any sdcard or SIM bc it's an S6 edge+, and they are all locked into the case! The supposed Samsung "unlock" feature does not work, though it says it does.

But without root, I can't find a backup that will catch all the files well nested under App directories. With root, there are too many "gotchas" nowadays.
Besides, I know I have tried every PIN I would have ever set - so this MM "PIN" is a joke! There should have been a warning, as this is a serious disruption of service.
Wiping is just not an option - I have files created Friday, before the Upgrade, which would not have gotten backed up anyway. Besides, No update should block data access. One of you Gurus can't think of a workaround or push Samsung or Google for a fix? I'm thinking more like "Class Action Lawsuit" for disrupting normal access to my data and my lawsuit...
Anyone else that pissed?

Wiping is just not an option - I have files created Friday, before the Upgrade, which would not have gotten backed up anyway. Besides, No update should block data access. One of you Gurus can't think of a workaround or push Samsung or Google for a fix? I'm thinking more like "Class Action Lawsuit" for disrupting normal access to my data and my lawsuit...
Anyone else that pissed?

You need to learn to "manually" back your stuff up yourself and don't rely on any programs/apps to do it...
There's seriously nothing the dev community could do because for 1 it's not the right way to go about this because if someone's phone is stolen or whatever basically they'd be able to come to XDA-Developers and find a way around the phone being locked for 2 that's definitely not what devs do, we don't look for ways to break into a phone or circumvent the security. You should have backed up anything you knew was important, simple as that .. You need to factory reset at this point. Sorry.

Question i just changed my pattern lock on my s21 ultra and forgot it. help please!

omg.
my friend just seen my pattern when i unlocked my phone so i decided to change my pattern (it had been a real long time since i changed it anyway) so i did it.
i cant remember what i changed it to.
i actually changed it 2x but the first pattern i thought was too easy so i changed it again.
i didnt make it any harder as in more dots to complete the pattern but hard enough i dont remember it.
im on a s21 ultra of course.
is there a limit on how many failed attempts i can do?
so far i think im under 10 but it does make me wait 30secs alot.
if there is an unlimited amount i think i will guess it but if there is a finite i dont want to mess it up and do a factory reset or erase.
i have alot of my grandbabies pics and videos on there.
if there is a way to bypass it please tell me.
i know my google acct on computer etc... thats not a problem and that is the same acct on my phone.

i not sure. i think i might have but i think i deleted it but it keeps asking me to same my passwords to samsung and i keep hitting never.
unless you have an unlocked bootloader I don't know that there's anything that can be done. I would just get them all wrong at this point and see if it let's you reset it with a good account. If you BL is unlocked you could boot into a custom recovery and wipe the security file.

Can only be done if you have find my device enabled and have an active internet connection in the phone tho
Step 1. Open the internet browser on your notebook and input the following website
address: https://findmymobile.samsung.com, click on the Sign in button and input your login credentials of your Samsung account, then click on Sign in button once more.
image to login to find my mobile web page
Step 2. The mobile device registered under your Samsung account will appear on the right-side of the screen. If you have multiple devices registered under the same Samsung account, make sure you select the device that needs to be remotely unlocked. Refer to the image below and click on the Unlock icon to unlock your device.
image after login to find my mobile web page
Step 3. Once you click on Unlock, a pop-up window will appear asking to verify the password of your Samsung account. After you input your password, click on the NEXT button, the pop-up window will automatically close and another pop-up window will appear with the result of remotely unlocking your device

Well, at this point you probably need to reset the phone, as you didn't link your Samsung account.
There actually isn't any way to recover the data Unless you can guess the pattern again.
I don't know if Samsung themselves would unlock the phone if you took it to the support center providing proof that you own the phone, but that could get your data back idk
In my opinion it is worth a try in this case

Depends if you had that option enabled in settings, by default it is disabled

Probably 3 then a waiting time, but it's probably more easier to take it to Samsung and get them to unlock it for you, since you own the phone they can do it.

i live in the country. i dont think there is a samsung store even in my state. im in iowa in usa
Samsung can't unlock it... pretty sure.
Once you set a lock screen the security is very good, too good. Sleep on it to see if the pattern comes to you... you still remember it.
That failing, suck it up. It may have not been your fault at all, see below.
I never set a screen lock, 2x tap on/off.
Never set a a bios password.
And most importantly never encrypt data backup hdds, etc.
You are the one most likely to get locked out... lesson learned the hard way.
A firmware failure, or external forces beyond your control (high energy particles of cosmic origin can do it*) can put you in a no win situation once you set an eccess password. While if you hadn't you likely wouldn't be locked out. I had a laptop bios lock me out, the password was simple a simple "S" even years latter I remember it... but the bios doesn't!
*this isn't a joke. Flying or being at higher elevations increases the risk. While it is slight when under the protection of the ionosphere it's still a random failure factor. One high energy particle can change the value of a flash memory cell without damaging it. The data however is corrupted unless redundantly backup which is one reason why spacecraft use at least 3 redundant computers.

omg wut ._.
Even if u hard reset, u will be asked to input your Samsung account and password, anf even with out knowing the pattern you have the option of putting in your PIN.
If you don't know your own PIN code then, something Is wrong!
