Generic USB devices on HD2?

Assuming USB hub functionality is present on the HD2, does anyone know if standard USB devices (e.g.generic keyboards or standard USB memory sticks) could be used on HD2 without having to install special drivers?

I'd like to know this to!
And like the G02, can I use a gamepad on this baby?

Given that USB host isn't supported how do you expect the device to have the drivers for it?

According to various reviews I've seen, USB host is supported.

Well, there are no drivers for peripherals in the leaked ROMs, no official information, nothing that would really indicate USB host support. It may be enabled somehow via hacks, but that would certainly mean that drivers need to be installed separately.

thats a shame really, hoped it would have... no TV out and no usb host, that sucked

how would it work to extract the host drivers from another device?
Could they be used on the HD?

Is there any hack already that will let me to get a video out of the nexus one? If so where can I read more about it?
If not, is anyone working on suck hack? again, where can i get some more info on it?

(Technically, you could install Sven Killig's kernel with USB host support and HDMI dongle drivers, make cables, buy USB2HDMI dongle for $100 or so, and then you could have some way of video out. But given the question and the lack of skills to search the forum, I don't think these skills are enough to make such modifications - including the fact that this kernel can't be used for anything else, since it disables normal USB device functionality).

I have used the search, I just didn't find the answer, thought to ask maybe someone heard about any news on the topic.
I have seen the usb host hack, and that is what I'm thinking about, but was interested if there were some better options to do it (aka via the 3.5 like the samsung galaxy s does).
So back to my question, is anyone working on anything like that besides the usb host hack aka via the 3.5, or maybe a way to directly use a micro usb to hdmi cable?

I'd have a lot of money if I had $1 for every time it needs to be explained.
There will be no integrated video out of any kind for Nexus. Ever. Because there is no HW for it inside.

You didn't search enough.
The hardware is not there to output video though the 3.5mm jack, nor the usb port.

Do you think will GTab have USB host?

You may not know how useful USB host is. You can use USB stick (up to 32GB), USB keyboard, USB mouse.
If it had USB host, I'd buy it for sure (wifi only).

Maybe they got it rooted in future and then its possible? (depends also on hardware...)

I'd guess that its not going to ever have the capability without hacking. I don't think any device has that at the moment.
I guess what gets hacked depends on what the hackers think is worth doing, and I can see that USB host would be an especailly awesome thing for the Tab so hopefully it will get some interest.
If its a game breaker, you may well be disappoited for a long while tho. This kind of hacking doesn't happen over night.

This is SO true. I remember people trying for years to hack USB host mode in to Nokia's Linux Tablets: the N770 and such. I wonder: Did they ever manage to do it?

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong (as I don't have the device in question) but doesn't the Nokia N8/E7 support just that? I seem to remember a video demonstration of the N8 supporting an USB memory stick.
Also, the Tab will have a dock that has a keyboard, so it's not totally impossible for it to have USB host capabilities.

I don't know about the N8, sadly I just don't have much interest in that part of the mobile space. However, some googling seems to indicate that it is possible (news articles say so) but I don't know if its naitive or needs hacking.
As for the keyboard and stuff, thats a good point. I can't see them using a non-usb standard for that, so it must just be the proprietary connector that makes the difference. In that case, all we should need is a Tab-USB connector, and a few drivers. That would really give the tab some muscle.
In general can mobile devices support the USB min-harddrives ? The ones that power from the port ? If thats possible then the tab will kick serious ass. 250 gigs in your pocket for cheaper than a microSD card.

I'm not really a fan of Nokia's products either, although they USED to make great products they haven't done so in awhile. And I *hate* Symbian. Anyways, at least the N8 DOES have some USB Host capabilities:

Well if they are going to officially make an adapter then maybe we are going to get USB Host... I can't see how you could transfer things off a digicam without the Tab hosting it as a drive.
Well... This looks pretty awesome then.

But they *CAN* cripple the functionality to just mass-storage devices or perhaps just cameras, like Apple did with their USB Camera connection kit, or whatever it was called.
Let's just hope that Samsung doesn't go that route.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I'm also wondering about usb host (or at least OTG) on the Tab (as I'm considering buying on to port Meego to).
Could someone who has the keyboard doc post the dmesg output once it's been plugged in please?
From some dmesg output I saw elsewhere (but not with the keyboard dock), it appears that the USB chipset is an OTG version, and seeing it act in host mode with the keyboard doc plugged in would be a nice confirmation.

OK, I just ordered a keyboard dock and I'll have a look. I'll post a dmesg output and open it to see if the PCB is marked in any way.
According to the pinout (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9925838) there seems to be no other way for data to flow apart from USB.
So one of the following must (should) be true:
1. Samsung is reusing the pins for a proprietary protocol -probably reconfiguring the device by pulling up or down other pins.
2. The device is capable of host/OTG mode but it is probably unpowered and it probably needs a pin pull-up/pull-down to enable.
3. The keyboard is using unidentified pins, and the USB pins are used simply for the PC connection and power.
Does anyone know if the keyboard acts as a proper dock? i.e. when you connect it to the pc does it work at the same time as (say) KIES or drive mount?

Just a quick update, the keyboard was just shipped, and I should have it by Tuesday.

USB host
This is a good concept. I have an Archos 70 and a Galaxy tab. Archos has a micro usb port with which I connected my USB host adapter and the key board and mouse works . Flash drive and router dongle says more power required. So I am looking for a powered USB connector for this.
Unfortunately, Galaxy tab has different cable and I dont know if I can find a host cable for this. Any suggestion?

and tried to ground pin 13 to put the tab in host mode last night... needless to say since I'm typing this on my computer... epic fail. However, I'm curious if anyone else has had any success with this.
I'm not too much of a fan of buying something to destroy... but if I have to disassemble a dock to get the pinout for monitor mode... suck!

Actually, many older Android phone/device do come with USB Host (OTG) function, hardware or software, with hacks or officials,
Mod/Hacks:
MOTO droid, N1, ZTE Blade, etc
Officials support:
Samsung GS2, MOTO Xoom, MOTO Atrix4G, EEETransformer, Many CN crappy Android Tablet.
I tried using a OTG Cable with a USB thumbdrive on LGP9xx but no luck, browsing thru the system I found that there are USBDisk DIRs on / or /mnt/USBDisk, there are no define on vold.fstab at all on LG, not like the MOTO Xoom..

So my wild guess is it was not turned on kernel level?
As far as I can tell, there is USBHost OTG support on Tegra2, seen post related to that on that, I understand that hardware might not be wired (that's what we gonna check), anyone any info/hints/directions/ideas about this on the LGP9xx?
It would just be great if we can use OTG on LG99x...

It needs to be turned on via menuconfig. I could do a quick compile later, if you want. The downside is, that a enabled USBHost disables the slave mode. So no mass storage (Or you implement something like holding back while booting up etc to enable usb host)

Wow, that's a quick and straight to the point reply!!!!!
I think I can live without a slave mode, most of my files are copied to the phone by samba, dropbox or ftp....
just wonder what trick did SGS2 or others uses, I know many of the devices which support OTG has 2 diff USB port, 1 for host and 1 for slave, but I "think" got that working too in 1 port, wonder is it the same as our case here that needs special reboot or so? (SGS2 is not available here yet...so I have never tried it instead of watching in on the youtube VID online...)

Don't know. One part maybe only with other hardware drivers. The reboot solution would be best for us (but needs some work). So the easy enable via menuconfig would be enough. Anyway I started to working on this, but I don't know if my otg cable isn't working (slave function was disabled but host didn't worked). So I wanted to test it anyway. What do you need? only mass storage?
The compile could take a while (working on fixing cust toolchain build)

Honeycomb 3.1 has USB Host support.
Hopefully someone can pull it out and use it somehow.
Since there's no source it might not be easy.
Or you can just wait for Ice cream Sandwich(Q4 2011), i'm guessing there will be Host support.

Not being picky or challenging to admin, I originally post this thread under development, which is should be more related since I am not asking generally how to "use" USB Host but related to kernel/drivers development....
I think this thread in general would not actually get much development attention at all...
Anyway, nope, no news, I understand hacks/dev is not a piece of cake, thanks for everyone who is working on the topic here!!!!!!!
and since CM distro do not support USB host at all, then I would suggest there may not be enough attention or momentum at all on this...

I may not agree, I did use a O2Graphite with a USB host cable with a USB jostick, and keyboard+mouse on many CN made crappy Tablets, they just works...
Many USB devices do not drain that much power, especially some Flashdrives...

HDMI via USB-C

From a 4-Port-KVM-switch I have a spare port available. So I tried to connect my M5 lite to the PC monitor, mouse and keyboard to work as usual when I am at home. Unfortunately none of the my port-replicators with USB-C port worked for that configuraton. I tried several HDMI MHD apps, where each of them told me, that the M5 lite is capable of MHD and HDMI. The monitor display at the end of the cable stays black. For testing purposes to avoid issues reasoned by the KVM switch I also connected the monitor directly to the M5 iite - no success.
Did I miss something? Is a port replicator with additional (unknown) functionality required to share the display output via HDMI cable to a TV or PC monitor? Does ist require additional drivers?
Ah ... 431 revision, still running the unpatched 8.0.0.256. Have heard, that GSI ROMs will not work on EMUI with 9.1.x.y, but will be open for messages from someone who succeeded.
Any ideas appreciated to get the hardware based solution working. I do not want to use some kind of Wifi- or BT-based casting mechanism. Tnx a lot in advance!

No idea about this problem, been using miracast to cast the screen since is a little bit more convenient. doubt this tablet will get android 9. like, it barely got 5 months left and it reaches the two year deadline from the moment it launched. and since is a global epidemic.... this tablet will only have security updates. not even a chance at android 9.
