Relock Widevine L3 to L1 - ASUS ROG Phone II Questions & Answers

Good day to all. Can anyone confirm if widevine L1 is recovered on the ff scenarios:
1. If the unlocking process is the ASUS unlocking tool then relocked using fastboot?
2. If EDL method is used for unlocking then relocked?

I'm looking for the same answer. But from the historical threads that you can find in this forum, it doesn't look like...

So I guess widevine is lost completely even when you unlocked it with the official app?

Yes, which is insane. Why the f would Asus do this?

Haha. That is why I am so hesitant to unlock my bootloader. I think on other phones like One Plus, L1 is recovered after relocking. Am I right?

I'm pretty sure most phones regain l1 after relock.

I see. So I guess eventually ASUS will be able to tackle this problem if they want to. Hopefully they are aware of this.

I would'nt count on it. Phone is 6mos old. I am sure they are putting all their effort into future phones.

Full steps to relock bootloader and get Widevine L1 were posted here: https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/18495/bootloader-relock-does-not-restore-widevine-l1.
After having a chat with a couple of other members of the ROG II Telegram discussion group, the above info was shared and posted in ZenTalk.

To many users, the uncertainty of being able to restore L1 after relock, was preventing them from jumping into the Custom ROM scene.

Rooting and Warranty void?

Hi
i just bought my phone month ago and i really want to root the device and use different roms
i observed that many here did that
does really rooting void the warranty and if is true ? can i do unroot for warranty
also does rooting has a relation to battery life impovement or it is the roms
my battery life is not good
i even bought an extendable 4300 battery from china and still bad it is just "the 4300 one " stood for 23h with light use
thanks in advance
NB : sorry for the bad english
Rooting can void it, but is undetectable if you reinstall the firmware which will remove it. Unlocking the bootloader to install ROM/kernel however cannot be reversed, but is undetectable if you revert to ICS. Rooting itself will do nothing for battery its the changes you make with this access, whether that be a new ROM, kernel, or simpler things like changing clock speeds with tegra overclock or similar
Sent from my rooted P880
What does it mean that unlocking bootloader can be undectable after changing ROM to ICS?

Because the ICS ROM was never made for bootloader unlock, so it will be locked in ICS, but if you flash JB again it will already be unlocked
Sent from my rooted P880
So, after unlocking bootloader and (in case of some damage) changing ROM to ICS mean I can still use my varranty? Or not?
It depends. LG can still tell if you have unlocked, unless you really think they are that stupid.

Yep, all they would have to do is update it to JB or even just look in sys/firmware/fuse/odm_reserved for changes. If they care they will find out

I have yet to find out how it would be possible to damage a device while using custom roms or rooting it. Unless someone is really stupid to do something dumb, there is no risk whatsoever.
Once you root it though, I believe its over with the warranty.

It all depends where you are. The company cannot, certainly under UK consumer law, refuse to fix a hardware fault just because you have rooted your phone or unlocked the bootloader. They can, however, if they can show that you have caused the damage by over-clocking the CPU or playing around with the voltage settings.

They could still see the difference. Fuses are written only once, so if the fuse is not the same as the original code well...
If it looks anything like mine:
0x000000000000000000000000000000000000fdffffffcafffffffdfffefeffed
Then there's no hope
Sent from my rooted P880
I think they don't even checking that.. :d
Cmon you would have to be very unlucky to have warranty refused when something breaks and you want to have it repaired just use relock unlock method, seriously doubt they will be checking fuses, and even if they have checked would they refuse repair

Flash it to latest imei firmware and be nerd infront of them i doubt they will check anything else.

LG Italy has officially stated that it will repair under warranty LG smartphones rooted and with custom ROM installed, no questions asked.
I'm not able to tell what other LG subsidiaries will do in other, different, countries.
Maybe you should ask.

Thanks for that. Interesting that it was over two years ago, and they specifically mention "rooting", no reference to unlocking bootloaders. It may be worth you asking the question of them to find out what their stance is now.

rooting and installation of alternate firmware, which you can't get without unlocking bootloader. still, this is old, and i'd really really like to know what their stance is today

Untrue. You can install alternate firmware - we had that ability on the 4X without an unlocked bootloader. What you can't do is install a custom kernel.
Unless they specifically state that they will support warranty claims with an unlocked bootloader then this is worthless anyway.

I love in India so I'll send mine for the update next week as they'll be covering courier cost.
I hope there will be some way in near future where it can be implemented in custom roms.

+1, i have a OnePlus for that, friendly root, Pure Android (OOS or Custom) :highfive:
Netflix is on my computer or tv, not my Smartphone
They should make something that we could access remotely to update this. Like, c'mon, we are in 2018 they don't our phone in their hands to update it.
So is this done on the hardware level so that it sticks for factory resets and custom ROMs? You know, like official LineageOS 15.1 released today? :fingers-crossed:
And I noticed a few others mentioning locked bootloaders... I don't care if I have to wipe and relock it to have it serviced but will I still get L1 if I unlock and TWRP it again?

Thanks it seems that you dealed with a support worker with little knowledge.
I dont think the "update" would surfive a full wipe as there are no extra partitions/chips to write to that we ourselfs cannot. If i'm wrong please do tell..

This update will survive wipes, and can surely be used for OOS based ROMs, OnePlus told me that rooting, unlocking the bootloader will not break the update again and that it is going to stick when on custom ROMs (they haven't guaranteed it tho). The reason why we, users cannot do the update ourselves, is because of Googles requirements - the executing PC must be authenticated to to generate special keys, which are unique to each and every device. It is inconvenient, but it's the only way OP can execute the update.

bootloader unlock?!

What is the most reliable site to unlock the ?
currently bootloader unlock is disabled by Huawei Corp,

thank you
Yeah see Roms and other kernels here in xda all. In. One flash tool is good.
But at the moment bootloader isn't unlockable. For Huawei p20 pro, so you need to. Wait a short time.
(since a month Huawei. P20. Normal was unlocked) so wait....
Of course it's possible to unlock bootloader. It's paid and quite expensive but there are at least three suppliers who offer it. Just do some searching here or in discussion section. Development is not in mature stage though.
Thank you all, I'll wait.

Hey everyone. I am new on here. And I just bought a Sony Xperia xz-2. I've been so accustomed to the substratum swift black themes on my Note 8 that coming to this has been a bit underwhelming as I was hoping to use substratum to no avail.
It seems that I'll need to root my new phone in android p to achieve what I want from substratum.
I have absolutely no knowledge of rooting. How can I root my phone if I have to in order to use substratum exactly as I did on my unrooted note 8?
Can anyone on here give me explicit details on how to successfully get substratum to work on my new Xperia?

You could install the uploaded Oreo firmware and use xperifix.
After you used the camera and upgrade to pie, the camera will still works (without noise reduction) and the other shiny & nice to have won't work.
The sound vibration system and the color screen system will continue to work.
Well, the PIE color system, not the Sony color system.
But it is similar.

I don't think that has anything to do with it. OnePlus has always waited for a very stable version out of the initial builds to release a full factory image along with the MSM Tool.

it is the case since the 8T. op will hold off the full rom for months at a time and even skip it all together. This only started during the 8 series.
Also, op does not release the MSM, those are all tricked out of op by people who pretend to be bricked and contact op to help unbrick. BTW, you can't open the leaked MSM tool anymore without a login.
