Rog 2 or not - ASUS ROG Phone II Questions & Answers

Hi everybody, I'm selling my Zenfone 6z to buy a new phone i love the rog phone 2 also if it has not a SD slot (I use SD to keep documents when I change phone). My question is: is it worth to buy a 899 Euro phone with snapdragon 855+ while next April there will be a lot of new snapdragon 865 phones even cheaper (redmi, realme, etc)?
Second question do both USB type c port support otg?
Thanks!

If u can afford and want the absolute newest and best u can wait...

Redmi and Realme isnt the same level as the ROGPHONE 2...
I myself have a Redmi Note 8 Pro just for macro shots. The rest is done on my ROGPHONE 2.

Well, thank you for your answer, my only doubt about redmi and realme, also oppo, is the software. If I'll buy one of them, the redmi k30 pro is interesting, I change the software for sure, I prefer android stock roms.

it's worth it if you buy tencent version and flash international software. you can get it for as low as 450 euros.

As the collegue above said, is so, so worthy if you buy the 430€ tencent version (now it's around 450€ normally). It's an amazing phone for daily use. Just the camera is an 8.5/10 with A10 (better than A9), but with GCam the results are amazing enough. Buy it!! I bought it like some weeks ago

Well, I found the tencent 12/512 at 800 euros, the global at 899 euro, but the tencent has less lte bands and here in Italy is better to get as many as you can... And for 99 Euros less I will get just 3 months warranty instead of normal 2 years...

SD 865 is now the standard.
90 to 120 Hz also becoming standard.
If the heavy weight, lack of 5g, no IR blaster or SD card and average camera aren't a problem for you then this is an excellent all round phone.

Well 5g is not a very big problem, it will take a couple of year to work in entire Italian territory. The IR and SD are options i like, but have you any valid alternative?

I haven't really been looking for alternatives since I got this phone.
A quick search suggested the Poco X2 / Redmi K30.....mid range phone though...

Yes, i discovered also Vivo Nex but I will not get stock Android...So at this point I think I'll go for rog 2 12/512 and I'll use GCam for camera and otg for my SD documents, maybe I can find a small otg adapter and keep it always connected to the phone. Thanks!

i still use honor note 10, which is china only version and i never had any problems with network coverage or call quality. also supports 3/5 lte bands.

Galaxy S10 or Mi9

currently, I have Samsung S7 edge as my daily driver. I'm looking for a new phone and can't choose between S10 (Exynos version) or xiaomi mi9.
In my country there's no Snapdragon version of S10 which a way better than the Exynos..
Is S10 camera and display better than the mi 9 to pay additional 300$ ?
This years version of the Exynos just seems way slower than other years. So for that, the MI 9 seems a better way to go, unless you want a water proof rating and storage card option.

If you have no problem with money, by all means go with the S10. Otherwise, the S10 is not worth the difference in price with the Mi 9

I have the money and wouldn't buy the S10. It's absolutely not worth!
Also depends if you can swallow oneui. It looks like an old people OS to me. Don't expect much AOSP development or fully working GSI. (i'm coming from s9+ and bought a mi 9). If you really value a headphone jack and sd card slot it might be a better option for you. But for price/quality ratio mi 9 all the way.
Why not go for the S10e Snapdragon version instead? That's what I've done and waiting for delivery.

I've read that you cannot unlock the bootloader on the S10e Snapdragon version. This was also the case for previous Sx Snapdragon phones. Link

There's no S10e here in Egypt .. There's only two options S10+ and s10 and both of them are exynos
I can order it from amazon but it will cost more than the regular s10
I am a Samsung S7 edge user as well, running the Snapdragon version with the eng bootloader, which has really crippled the phones performance. I been mega excited to order the Mi9 and been waiting on the Transparent Edition to pop up a little cheaper. So I am thinking you should take a look at the Vivo IQOO and Vivo IQOO Monster as they have some features the Mi9 doesn't. You lose some things with the Vivo IQOO like wireless charging, but you get speaker jack, internal memory card, 4000 mAh battery and a far superior charger.

No one is selling Vivo phone here so I have to order it online which mean additional tax.
But for the headphone jack it worth to think about this phone.. Do you now anything about software support? ot custom roms.. xiaomi is so good in software update.. and there are alot of developers that support their phone
I am not sure what kind of support it will get being its so new. That is the only thing holding me back with it.

Interesting phone, i wanted to get it, but asus decided to remove sd slot, and to put usb 2.0 type-c port. There is nothing flagship about that
I know that doesnt matter to most users, but cmon, its 2021... Usb 2.0 on a sd888 16gb ram ufs 3.1 phone???
Hope to see twrp and some good rom too it soon
Just placed my order.
Have 14 days to try it out and to see if it will replace my IPhone 12 mini.
Truly fantastic phone. instant buy.
Hope GCam will be available for non root device.
Question to the Asus longtime users.
Is there any way to get the phone cheaper at launch? some special promo ot stuff?
Can someone verify if there will be a USA release? The current spec sheet doesnt have compatible 5g bands for T-Mobile.
@Haldi4803
here in Germany there is a little Promo for Pre-Order
and a Shop sell the 128gb with 8GB for 599€
How is the ASUS politics about bootloader unlock and de-googling phones? I would buy it as soon as I can use it without Google.
The battery life seems really pitiful and with that 33w lackluster charging I do not feel it's that great a device these paid reviewers are making it to be. 5.5 hours SOT is not something to boast about.
It would've been perfect if ASUS would've chosen the Snapdragon 870, which makes sense considering the mediocre cameras that don't even need the DSP of the 888 and almost equal performance to it and much better throttling/thermals and battery efficiency.
So sad.

No, Ubuntu is not feasible at the moment, unfortunately their OS is not compatible with many phones and they do not have all the apps. Yes, I know you were ironic, btw.
FYI, I would like to use it with LineageOS or similar ROMs, without gapps, for a variety of reasons:
Because I do not need most of Google apps and services;
Because Google Play Services eats battery doing things I do not want to,;
Because I like having more control of what is happening on my devices;
There are also a privacy concern which is real, Rob Braxman on YouTube can tell you more about that.
Regarding my initial question (that you haven't replied), I suppose I will keep monitoring the XDA and 4pda forums and see how things will evolve.
Asus provide bootloader utility for previous devices, should be up for zenfone 8 soon.
I will add signature spoofing and degoogle stock rom. I have done it for all my devices: improved battery life and full control.
When is the phone going to be released in the UK? Cannot find any information whatsoever?

Did you try any of Asus previously published unlock apps? For example, this one looks rather generic:

Question Larger capacity Ultras faster? 128GB benchmark included.

Hi all,
I'm trying to find out if there is a performance difference when it comes to storage between the 128gb and higher spec ultras. As I understand it, bigger SSD devices are generally faster.
I ran benchmark against a 128gb model (linked below.) Can someone with a 256 or 512 model post their results?
many thanks in advance!
My Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G (SDM888) scored 27292 in the PCMark Storage 2.0 Android benchmark test. http://bit.ly/pcmark-android
Passmark storage test was around 78,000 I believe.
256GB Exynos model (SM-G998B) so maybe not comparable, but: I got PC Mark 2.0 storage test = 30329.

This used to be the case for SDDs many moons ago (I haven't checked lately TBH). I would not be surprised to find better performance in higher capacity, I think it mostly has to do with optimized cell access.
Thanks for the feedback y'all! Looking around today I can only find 512GB international models so this may be a moot point.
I had a 512GB ordered from Samsung a few weeks ago when you could still get them on their website, but I cancelled the order thinking the price might come down when the S22 is announced. Just couldn't justify paying full price for last years tech.
T-Mobile still wants $1200 for a 128gb model, so I'm thinking I'll just wait for the 22.
The 22 looks to be an evolutionary upgrade with not much new over the S21 Ultra....smart money is on the discounted S21 since they appear to be virtually the same minus an S pen

I would purchase the S21 Ultra for a few reasons. First being Android 12 is a disaster, it's still nowhere near stable. The new Exynos SoC for the S22 is having serious production issues, only a handful of chipsets are usable from an entire wafer. The S22 Ultra will cost more money but few feature upgrades. The S-Pen (which works on an S21), a bit of a camera tweek, faster charging and new colors. Samsung needs help, it's no longer a great value.

Well I found one place selling the US 512GB version for $1700 on ebay, but that's the cheapest I could find. Might have to just cave in and get the 128GB from TMO for $1200.
More googling revealed that the RAM in the 16GB model is probably also faster.
"At 6,400 megabits per second (Mb/s), the new LPDDR5 is about 16 percent faster than the 12Gb LPDDR5 (5,500Mb/s) found in most of today’s flagship mobile devices. When made into a 16GB package, the LPDDR5 can transfer about 10 5GB-sized full-HD movies, or 51.2GB of data, in one second."
From: https://news.samsung.com/global/sam...dr5-dram-at-worlds-largest-semiconductor-line
The test is probably not reliable then.
I redid the passmark test and here's what I got for disk and memory on the 128GB:
Disk: 74,902
Memory: 31,918

Question Who has a Realme GT2?

Soo, anyone here who has the phone?
If so, do you have the Chinese or Global version and how are you finding it?
Seriously considering getting this phone.
Seems nobody? Well I just ordered one for myself, Chinese phone but apparently the seller can have it flashed to the Global ROM - so will take a while to arrive in South Africa but will report back once I receive it.
I figured it was not worth spending the extra money on the Pro version as the differences are the cameras and SoC. I'd rather have the non fisheye wide angle and the normal macros and not the microscope camera and I feel the SD888 will be more than sufficient for me. Do not play games on my phone much.
I purchase it today from amazon spain... it is little to big for me but i will give him a chance... definitly best buy flagship. I am buying him because it is the cheapes phone with imx 766 and snapdragon 888. But now i have second thoughts beacuse of realme gt neo 3. It has same imx766 sensor and dimesity 8100 which is really fast with night mode processing. what you guys think about it gt2 or gt neo 3.
I have cancelled the order... dimensity 8100 and 9000 is really step up from sd 888.

I think that's all marketing bollocks, in practice I doubt the difference will be that big considering the gt 2 pro is the flagship and the neo 3 can't or should not be better than it and should be less good than the gt2. Gcam also helps a lot in night photos.
Anyway, unless you're going to import it from China the neo 3 is only coming to Europe in the summer.
I might do import it from china and dimensity 8100 can is better in everything, faster cores, low energy consumption, 5Gigapixel/s (888 2.7Gpixel/s)... I really want top notch for money. Only one thing is that it is going to be difficult to unlock bootloader but with gt2 global is problem too for now. Gcam is only problem with dimensity 8100.
I don't know what to do...mybe wait for oneplus nord 3 coz better support.

I'm like you, I wanted the best of the best for the price, compared phones back to back, was willing to give 700€ for a fu*** phone, me that never paid more than 350€ for a phone and that was alot back then. haha
In the end I bought the GT2, yeah the pro has a better cpu, better screen bla bla bla and I even thought about returning it when I saw the Neo 3 was releasing like a week after I received it.
But to be honest, I'm very happy with it and honestly I don't need a better phone.
The neo 3 has a better cpu, ok, but will you notice it? To give 30min or 1h more of sot for the lower consumption?
Since you don't have the GT 2 and are willing to wait until summer then go ahead. Otherwise buy it back and you'll be happy anyway.
Oh and Nord 3 is going to be a rebranded Neo 3.
I would be really satisfied with gt2 indeed but this dimensity looking promising with photos and camera is my top priority. GT2 has really good camera and processor and i didn't think twice for buyin it but amazon didn't process my order for 15days and i cancelled order when i saw neo 3 and dimensity 8100. maybe i will buy nord 3 whichi saw it has identical spec maybe little smaller plus better support or even poco f4 with dimensity 9000 if price would be in that rang. so no new phone for another 3 months btw i'm buying new phone for like 1.5 year and i didnt even blink when i saw it on amazon for 450€ in eu. Truly flagship killer.

I really really doubt there will be a noticeable difference in photos, even between the GT 2 and the pro there's small difference and sometimes the GT 2 is better .
i am aware of it and the biggest but for gt neo 3 is gcam.
I've had the GT2 pro (China Rom) for a few months now. Phone runs great besides the Chinese features I can't remove and not having Google assistant and gpay.
I'm just waiting for a way to flash the global ROM.
i have bought the phone eventualy from amazon... it is really nice phone and with sofware updates it is going to be bestbuy for sure. Gt2 pro forum is much more organized then GT2 but i think global gt2 is best buy for sure and sale going to explode...in this price range there is only gt2 with this specs. Thank you Realme.

Truly flagship killer.

cameras on the GT 2 are better than that of Neo 3 as per multiple comparisons.
I have the global version for one month now. Really happy with it. Photos are not the best but décents and gcam can be installed. Battery life is great 5 to 6 hours sot with nearly 240 apps and 2 SIM cards. Really happy with it.
I have the Global version and it is good in all aspects. I don't have any issues and have been using this phone for a month now!
Hi,
I'm thinking of buying GT2. I drive a lot and I would like to ask some questions to the owners of the phone:
- is android auto working? do you have any issues?
- is google assistant working without problems?
- does Realme GT2 have Google Dialer as a default dialer?
I would be grateful for this information.
Google dialer is default.
This phone sucks in mic audio quality and in bad compatibility with most Bluetooth devices out there.
I am selling it after 15 days of purchase.
Mic in calls are awsome especially when talking on speakerphone and didn't notice problem with Bluetooth connectivity and i have a lotn9f gadgets like smart watch, headphones and speakers. In videos mic is fine too.

You are lucky.... Your device is ok then. Mine has problem. They asked me from Realme to send my device to their service so they can check. I don't care .... I will sell it and buy another brand.

General Very Disappointed in OnePlus

The OP 10 Pro is the second time OP has truly disappointed me. The phone is only available with 128GB in the US. For a "pro" model, this is a joke. The $900 price puts it right at a PIxel 6 Pro and S22+ price. There is 0 reason to get the OnePlus vs those two, considering both have substantially better cameras, more support for accessories, and much bigger communities on XDA.
My most recent OP was the 9 (non-pro). I've been very disappointed with the cameras, as even an old Pixel 3 I have takes better pics in most conditions. I replaced it about a month ago with a Korean s20 Ultra (so I can root), and I'm never going back. Much better camera, so many case options, and even though the processor is an older model, it feels just as fast. Went with the 20 vs 21 for sdcard support, and having an extra 512gb for $60 is great. I have all my pics and vids ever on the phone. All OSM for US, Canada, and Mexico, tons of music on the phone for flying (which I do a lot).
I've been a long time OP supporter, right from the OP1, and have had every phone except the OP2. They seemed to lose their way with the 7 (I had to get a chinese model since I didn't want the pro), and have been on a decline ever since, charging more but not offering anything better except the new snapdragon processor.
Sorry for the rant. I'm sure the 10 pro will be a decent phone. Right on par with the 9 pro, which was a decent phone. I'm just not excited about OP releases any more, when I used to be online hitting refresh for the sale to open.
Doesn't help that Jerryrig snapped the phone in half very easily. Be careful, these look fragile.
No SD card slot regardless of the internal memory capacity is a severe handicap. Even 500gb internal memory isn't enough let alone 128gb without an SD card. Having a OS drive and data drive(s) is the best way to run any PC or smartphone.
Samsung has also dropped the Note and the ball on all their current Flagships.
They screwed their loyal power users Apple bad.
Google Adroid emulated Apple by adopting cpu cycling sucking, user unfriendly scoped storage.
Android 11 and up suck Apple bad now.
I have 2 N10+'s, the second new one was bought 5 months ago. One is running on 9, the newer one on 10.
Whatever. I'm good for a couple years.
OEM new device releases are always a rollercoaster
I just ordered the Global black 128gb 10 Pro to take it for a spin....
No dual-sim USA. No 256gb USA. Both deal-breakers for me.
I spoke with my money when I canceled and bought a pixel 6 pro instead.

Oneplus are a bunch of turds now.

Pretty much this - I can't see a single advantage the OP10Pro has over the Pixel 6 Pro or s22 + or ultra. Granted, the sammy is a little more expensive.
I got the OP 10 Pro and I don't like the design after seeing it with my naked eyes and I'm gonna return this and get an S22 Plus!

Moving from OP6 makes a difference

AH, yeah! Fromt the 6 is quite a big move indeed!
I came from the 8Pro, not a crazy difference, but with the trade-in I got just a little less of what I paid for at last year's Amazon Black Friday
I don't understand why anyone would buy this phone. Performance is the same or worse than a 9 Pro depending on what you are doing, has less storage and ram, is more fragile, and the camera system overall is worse. This phone is a flop.
Another interesting fact is that our local amazon has gone down in price. For the first two days it was 1029Euro, then they lowered the price by 6% to 964Euro.
Not much, but still something. Plus headphones (OnePlus Buds Pro) on sale in preorder and the price becomes bearable
I can test it for one day and here are few things...
80W and 65W are almost the same
Stereo speaker downgrade
With 50/50 mobile/wifi up to 5h SOT
No OxygenOS (its more ColorOS with Oxygen skin)
Front camera is much better
Yes, no IP68

Hey,
You got the 10.. I just received mine today, good t see you.
Re: the OP.... Soon as there's some good pixel ROMs the photos back storage will be unlimited, 128GB for the most part is more than enough, at the end of the day it's a phone, would be nice to have more but not the end of the world.
Regarding the RAM, I'm not too upset by it.. should use less battery being 8 and not 12.. I don't think that there will be a performance hit.
Rest of the hardware is the same so I'm happy with it.
Guess if you really need 12 and 256 plus then I think your only option would be to buy direct.
