There is no TWRP properly supporting Chinese Oreo encryption on P9 in a way that:
- you don't need to format Data and make changes to Vendor partition
- you just need to enter your Android unlock pin/pass whenever you boot to TWRP
- with that that TWRP can properly read/write to Data and Internal memory
However, there is a Chinese TWRP (language can be switched to English) that you can for one time remove encryption from Data (it is not enough to format Data but it must be also edited an fstab file on Vendor partition)
After that encryption is removed and you can fully use TWRP for e.g. Nandroid backups, installations from Internal memory, installations to Data partition, editing on Data partition (in case of e.g. bootloops with Magic modules), etc.
Also, once encryption was removed you can switch back to your preferred TWRP from that Chinese TWRP (that TWRP has some other issues)
It was long ago couple of us experimented with, you can start from the following post and follow the links (but always compare the dates, newer posts from the same pearson mean they were written with more experience and understanding of the matter):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80029346&postcount=1843
Good thing is that (once you don't want it anymore), stock Oreo can be fully reinstalled and encryption reinstated. E.g., eventually I did it on two my P9s (almost a year ago), but I was no more updating the posts about
Of course, once Data is decrypted, it can be also used for TWRP when working with GSI/AOSP ROMs (not only with stock Oreo)

Why custom ROMs not friendly with encryption?

Hi to all!
It seems custom ROMs are not supports encryption of user data... Why?
After stock MIUI on Xiaomi Redmi 4X I try sevral custom ROMS, and from all of it I cannot encrypt user data partition.
Custom ROMs are (all latest official): Resurrection Remix, AOSP Extended and LineageOS 14.
My steps:
0) flash phone with stock recovery via MiFlash (to restore "innocent state");
1) install latest TWRP (v3.1.1);
2) wipe all partotions except SD card and insstall custom ROM from SD card;
3) new system initial setup without "ask password on boot";
4) go to Settings -> Security -> Encrypt User Data;
Phone performs reboot and data still not encrypted.
All three custom ROMs behave the same at this point.
If perform initial setup with "boot password prompt", user data is whown as encrypted in Security settings, but TWRP still not asks password on booting to recovery mode. And I can unpack backup archive produced by TWRP (it seems not encrypted).
So, my question: if I not produce mistake, it seems custom ROMs are not friendly with data encryption, why? And is it possible to fix it?
p.s.
Also I try to erase data with "fastboot format userdata" and configure phone again. It not helps to solve problem.
Hi. Perhaps anybody can bring some light into this encryption issues?
My situation is a little different:
I installed LineageOS 14.1 from TingyiChen. But did not format /data. So it is still encrypted. I did not try to restore an backup from data within twrp yet. But I have read that there can occure problems?
The official version of twrp (3.2.1.0) is not able to decrypt /data. But there is an inofficial version (3.1.1) that works with encrypted data? Please tell me what's the difference? Is it only the switch "TARGET_HW_DISK_ENCRYPTION "? Why did TingChen remove encryption feature two weeks ago in his github repo (Sorry, I'm not allowed to post links yet)?
Fingerprint unlock is not working after reboot anymore. I have read that this also is because of encrypted data. partition. Please tell me what's the problem here or point me to a thread which covers this topic. I was unable to find one yet.
If I do a backup of my data partition in twrp and format it to disable encryption. Can I then restore this backup or what do I need to do for disabling encryption without loosing my data?
Thank you for your answers.

Oliver

Wipe Internal Data & perform Clean flash, you will have to dothis everytine you flash ROM. Some says Custom TWRP (redwolf port) Have solved the issue, but Better wipe Internal everytime you flash a ROM
---------- Post added at 08:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:06 PM ----------
it's very easy for anyone with just a little bit of knowledge to get around any kind of security that TWRP might have. All they have to do is flash one of the other recoveries that's available that doesn't have password protection to get around it. You can Still flash a Custom Recovery by PC without prompting a pass again. And you're Internal is already Encrypted. Stay at MIUI with Unlocked bootloader if you're too much concerned with the security.... But an expert will use test points to Unlock that too...

[RECOVERY][TREBLE] TWRP 3.2.3-0L v1.3 Labs Mod for the ZTE Axon 7

- T W R P 3.2.3-0L [Labs Mod] -
The Swiss Army Knife TWRP Mod for the Axon 7
INTRODUCTION
This was a long term project that I have been using for a long time. I created some scripts to make it easier and faster to flash new roms and quickly restore the daily driver configuration after a testing session. For easier access I modified the TWRP interface to add direct access to the scripts. They had many problems but they were good to me since I created them and I knew how to used them well, but they were not ready for other users.
But the time has come and I have cleaned up most of the annoyances in the tools and in the UI. I have named it "Labs Mod" since it allows me to have my flashing lab on the go, making it extremely easy to switch to different configurations, or recover the daily driver configuration in a few minutes. I believe it is free of major bugs and now I can concentrate on adding new scripts, and more options to the current scripts.
FEATURES
On top of the latest improvements introduced in the official TWRP 3.2.3-0, this mod offers the following added features:
Full vendor partition support (mount, format, wipe, partition image flash, TWRP backup and restore).
Integrated Bootstack backup and restore.
Modem firmware image flash
Reboot to EDL
Button to enable device mapper verity (DM-Verity) enforcing
Button to disable the eMMC write protection (disemmcwp)
Backup/Restore internal storage to the TWRP Backup folder in the external SD. Ensure you have enough free space, free space check is not yet implemented.
EDL backup zip creation. Dual zip use since the resulting zip can be installed using TWRP from the phone or using MiFlash from the computer. It offers the following package creation options:
OS: Operating system (boot, vendor and system).
GPT: Partition table only.
CONFIG: Device config data (IMEI, SN, MAC, etc).
BOOTSTACK: Boot firmware without modem.
MINIMAL: Includes GPT+bootstack+modem+recovery.
EMERGENCY: Minimal + device config.
FULL: Minimal + OS.
FACTORY: Includes Full + config.
Integrated Treble PARTY tool for creating and removing the vendor partition. Vendor partition is required for Treble ROMs. Removal is required for flashing old non-treble roms.
Lockscreen security removal. Removes password, pattern, fingerprint, etc... (in case you forget your password or the security descriptor gets corrupted).
Google account binding removal (in case you want to wipe from within recovery and test with different google accounts).
Bootloader unlock message removal.
New! Expand OS partitions (Vendor and System) to fit the whole partition. Useful for expanding the GSI filesystem for having space for adding GApps or moving apps to system.
New! Deep Wipe function performs a low level wipe of the partition data, erasing the remaining the portions of the eMMC that stored the partition information.
REQUIREMENTS
You need an unlocked Axon 7
INSTALLATION
WARNING, THIS SOFTWARE COULD WIPE ALL THE DATA IN YOUR DEVICE, INCLUDING THE INTERNAL STORAGE.
IT REQUIRES TWRP CUSTOM RECOVERY IN AN UNLOCKED DEVICE, OTHERWISE YOUR DEVICE COULD BE BRICKED.
!!! Whatever you do, it is at your own risk !!!
Follow these steps:
1. Download the TWRP Labs Mod image to your External SD card.
2. Boot to TWRP and select the Install option in the main manu.
3. Tap on the install image button and select your external SD. select the image file you downloaded, select the recovery partition and confirm.
4. Reboot to recovery again to ensure the changes are applied properly.
DOWNLOAD
TWRP_3.2.3-0L_v1.3-Axon7-Labs_Mod.img Flavor of the mod using the official TWRP 3.2.3-0 Kernel binary (Quick boot even when using F2FS, full ADB support, NO B12 Oreo encryption). Use this if you do not plan on using device encryption. Please note that you won't be able to use any tool of this version if your device is encrypted.
TWRP_3.2.3-0L_v1.3.B12-Axon7-Labs_Mod.img Device encryption enabled flavor of the Labs mod. It use the 3.2.1-8 TWRP Kernel binary (Long boot when using F2FS, NO ADB support, B12 Oreo encryption). Use this one if you use device encryption. Please note that this flavor doesn't support adb interface.
NOTES
1. I do not have the time and expertise to dig into kernel hack so this is why I do not provide a unified kernel with fast F2FS boot, ADB and B12 encryption. Probably people developing kernels could help on this issue. It would be nice having a kernel with proper F2FS boot support, B12 encryption and ADB interface. Until then, there is no other way than having 2 flavors depending on the features we require.
SOURCES
C'mon, all of them are scripts!!! the sources are at glance. Use them in your projects but don't forget to give credit to the source !!!
CREDITS
@NFound for the recovery kernel binary supporting Oreo B12 encryption.
@someone755 for the keycheck binary I use in my scripts.
@Chainfire for the TWRP install script hacks.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating and learning throughout the enlightenment journey.
Nice.

Well, all of them are Bourne shell scripts. Some of them are stupidly simple such as those in the Reboot menu, and others in the Advanced > Oki Labs menu are very elaborated, specially:
- PARTY tool: for creating and removing the vendor partition. I released it a few days ago as a separated tool that could well work in other devices.
- EDL backup: for creating EDL flashable backups of a configuration. This tool will probably require a full thread due to the concepts involved. The big feature is that the generated zip can be also flashed using any TWRP.
- Internal Storage Backup/Restore: TWRP doesn't offer a straightforward solution for backing up the internal storage, since it is excluded from the data backup, now it is possible to create a backup and restore the contents of the internal SD in case you want to mess up with the userdata partition. Now this script creates a set of files under the TWRP/backup folder. I am planning to add the possibility of having different backup folders, the same way the GUI treats the data partition.
That is looking very sweet!!!
I'm excited, nice work man!
This is just fantastic!
Well, the non b12 version can't decrypt my device, running los 15.1
also, the lab options did nothing, and when I pressed on PARTY the recovery froze on me.
Hmm.

Well, that's why in the OP I provide 2 flavors of the mod. If you require decrypt then you have to use the B12. PARTY will not work either if your device is encrypted and you are using the 3.2.3-0L. In your case, using device encryption, you have to use the 3.2.3-0L(B12). You will have all the functions except for ADB. PARTY will work fine too.

I thought the B12 version was for stock-based ROMs.
Okay I'll flash the other one once I get home, thanks.

Thnx for this tool ! I'll test that this weekend.
It would be great if you'd make a small guide on this with a couple of situations / a possible indepth review with screens / what's possible and what's definitely not possible with this twrp tool.
Anyway seems very promising :good:
Sheesh...i have no external sd card
I have garde flashed your TWRP_3.2.3-0L (B12) -Axon7-Labs_Mod.img but this version says when starting in twrp that my password is wrong. the version 3.2.1.8 of nfound unlocks my password quite normal
Excellent Job! I can't wait to get back my Axon 7 from RMA Services. I'm just going to need sometime to get this running coming from stock MIflavor.
Found bug. Installed the ADB version (thanks Cthulu!), wanted to check the functionality.
Went into the Storage Backup and my phone froze. Rebooting from ADB worked.
EDIT: tried to reproduce the issue - same thing happened 2nd time.
EDIT2: It freezes at any option in Oki Labs

I can't duplicate the issue. Are you sure you downloaded it properly? Do you have an SD card? The backup requires an SD card with enough space. Checking for free space is in the todo list for this weekend.

What option are you testing? the Storage Backup? What format are you using in your SDCard? Does it happen at the beginning or after a while? Is there any file under TWRP/BACKUPS/STORAGE in your Micro SD after the failure?
@Oki this is amazing. Thank you.
Is it possible to use the recently released kernel sources from los15 to solve the issue of needing two revisions?

[RECOVERY][TREBLE] TWRP Recovery for Zenfone 3

This is a TWRP fully Treble-ready with "Treble enabler" option in order to repartition safely the device.
Features:
TWRP fully Treble-ready;
Maintained with latest TWRP version;
Fully compatible with non-Treble devices - can be used as normal without Treble partitioning;
USB-OTG fixed
Has 'TWRP survival' function for automatically re-installing TWRP recovery when installing ROMs and kernels;
Adds a "Treble enabler" option that allows you to repartition your device in order to support Treble.
Has the option to shrink userdata to create Vendor partitions. All relevant partitions will be resized and formatted in one go.
If you shrink Userdata, it will ERASE DATA AND INTERNAL STORAGE COMPLETELY - but your device will stay compatible with all existing non-Treble ROM's
Instructions
Flash the recovery.
Reboot Recovery
Optional - Use the "Advanced > Treble enabler" option for repartition option.
If you opted to repartition for Treble, you are ready to flash a Treble ROM/Vendor pack.
About TWRP survival
TWRP survival is a simple hook that detects if a boot.img will be installed and restores TWRP after it's flashed. This only works if you have booted TWRP with Tissot Manager 2.0 from a real recovery boot - NOT from a recovery 'hot boot' (fastboot boot method).
You will see in the install log if a TWRP survival attempt is successful in the flash text output.
Automatic TWRP survival works when:
Flashing a ROM ZIP (or AIO) with TWRP
Flashing a boot.img in TWRP "Install Image" mode
Automatic TWRP survival does NOT work when:
Flashing a boot.img via fastboot
Restoring boot in a TWRP backup
Any other way of flashing a boot.img
In these cases, be sure the use the TWRP Installer immediately after flashing or restoring a backup - otherwise you may get the device into a confused state (especially if you restore a non-TWRP boot then try to install an AIO ROM without installing a new TWRP first).

FAQ
Q) After I flash TWRP, I get kicked into fastboot when trying to boot the ROM!
A) Your kernel is not Treble-compatible.
Q) How do I update TWRP?
A) Just flash the ZIP installer again, then Reboot Recovery. Note that this will erase Magisk on BOTH slots if you have it installed to either, requiring you to reflash it to one/both slots. See my Treble guide FAQ section for more info on Magisk interaction.
Q) My PC can't see the MTP (storage) device from TWRP!
A) For dualboot compatibility, MTP is automatically disabled at various points. Just enable it manually in the Mounts menu to get access.
Q) If I shrink Userdata for Treble, will stock and OTA work?
A) I have heard varying results on this. It does for some, not for others. Please assume that this will NOT work.
Q) Can I restore a non-Treble TWRP backup after I repartition for Treble? And the other way around?
A) Yes!
Q) I see "Failed to mount '/system' (Device or resource busy)" red error in TWRP after flashing a ROM
A) You can safely ignore it. You just need to reboot recovery before you can flash anything else (like Gapps) to this ROM.

But then I see no difference from a "normal" ROM ported specifically to a device. Should not Treble support be able to use them on several different devices?
For example, should not I be able to go to the AEX Treble download area and use it on ZF3? If it would not be the same as having to wait for a dev port AEX to ZF3.
I'm really confused lol

What do you expect? It's still in an early stage of porting. Some device specific bits still run from /system. GSI's may work but I doubt anything will work properly.
And I don't plan of supporting GSIs anyway.

So what's the difference of the Lineage Treble for a Lineage normal running in ZF3?

Currently nothing much ( updated proprietary bits + vendor image taken in place )
Maybe in the near future when everything is in place. I'll seperate Vendor image from builds ( noticable smaller updates )

Also, when vendor img will be split from the ota package, with (if necessary) some adjustments we can flash GSI ROMs easily.

Well, repartition works fine. After repartition a new /vendor partition of 1024mb will be made.
Although, you'll loose your data (apps+personal). So make sure to do a full backup of your device.
Feedback:
* HAVE A BACKUP. This tool messes with your partition table and is still unstable. Your data partition can be resized to the wrong size.
Will come back after a few months to provide more feedback. Appreciate the work guys.
Works fine for me, data is correctly resized even with multiple changes from normal to treble and back...
Can't seem to wipe /cache partition.
Anyone knows why?

Well, that's normal.
Since you're going to make a new /vendor partition of about 1024mb, /data should be deleted & recreated in order to give some space to the new partition.
Also, what do you mean with "can be resized to the wrong size"?
The tool is pretty stable tho. Can you give more info such as model (ex. ZE552KL 4/64), script version (ex. 4.3b) & other?
Thanks.
I've successfully installed this tool, although attempting to install the new LOS 16 Android 9 ROM we have on this forum results in an error: 7, "Failed to mount '/vendor' (Invalid argument)"
From what I've perused so far in my research, that error mostly crops up on non-treble builds of TWRP, yet I definitely used the latest version from your website. I also redownloaded the latest version of LOS just to recheck, and yep, nothing's changed.
Any clue about what's going on here? I don't know much about Treble ROMs, or custom ROMing to be all honest.
EDIT: I have found the enable Treble option. Even when enabled and installed, after reboot, the /vendor partition cannot be read. It seems that after doing this too, I can't load files over USB, or mount my SD Card. I'm getting pretty confused as to what's happening. I can't boot into system, and fastboot won't connect to my PC.

Oneplus 3T Restore Issue after Pie Update - HELP

So, quick explanation. Pie update showed up on my OP3T and I have an unlocked bootloader, TWRP 3.3.0-1 and Magisk 18.1 on OOS 5.0.8 (Oreo). Additionally I had a second user account and a Work Profile on my main account.
After reading on the decryption issues (and against my better judgement), I decided that maybe it could work through System Updates since it detected root and was going to install the full package. Big mistake. Got a "Decryption unsuccessful" and sadness.
I had of course taken a full TWRP backup to be safe.
I'm going to put the detailed explanation below (hidden) because it's quite long.
Now in more details. Along with the TWRP back up, I had an oandbackup -backup- of all apps (main and secondary account, but not work) and manually copied all internal storage files on my PC. After the "Decryption unsuccessful" message, I pressed the "Reset Phone" button (probably a stupid decision) thinking I'm good since I have a backup. Phone rebooted, with TWRP replaced (as expected), and I'm in the new OS. Played around a bit in Pie [added my account, registered a fingerprint and PIN, connected to WiFi and checked a few apps] and then I thought, "ok, time to go back", and then it happened.
I rebooted the device and it asked for password to boot (which was the PIN I added in the OS), and then rebooted again in Fastboot to flash TWRP again in order to restore the backup.
TWRP flashed successfully and I copied over my backup. Restored System, Data and Boot, wiped Dalvik & Cache, rebooted, shows the Oneplus logo, gets stuck for a bit and then goes to Fastboot. Ok...probably messed up somewhere, let's try again. Same thing.
I guess the notion that I had the TWRP backup made me feel safe, because I continued to experiment.
After a full 24hours awake trying to restore my phone to its previous state, I have the following:
Restoring System, Data and Boot results in the device booting and showing the Oneplus logo and then after a few seconds, going to Fastboot.
Restoring EFS, Recovery and/or Cache makes no apparent difference.
Restoring Data and Boot, but System Image instead of System makes the device boot and start a lengthy process (possibly of encrypting the entire Data partition) lasting about 2hours, during which the device becomes hot enough (~45C / ~113F) that holding it for more than a couple of seconds is very uncomfortable. After it finishes the lockscreen has my wallpaper, app notifications (like VPN) show up and the second account is there, however my old PINs for either accounts don't work and the Data partition can no longer be accessed in TWRP
Code:
Data successfully decrypted, new block device: '/dev/block/dm-0'
Updating partition details...
...done
[COLOR="red"]Unable to mount storage[/COLOR]
Successfully decrypted with default password.
Updating partition details...
...done
[COLOR="red"]Unable to mount storage
Failed to mount '/data' (No such file or directory)[/COLOR]
Full SELinux support is present.
[COLOR="Red"]Unable to mount /data/media/TWRP/.twrps[/COLOR]
MTP Enabled
When Data is inaccessible in TWRP, only formatting it can bring it back (empty, of course). And then it needs to be formated to F2FS again as well (Oneplus uses F2FS for the Data partition).
Flashing the Oxygen OS 5.0.8 zip file after restoring System works the same as restoring with System Image.
The closest I've come to restoring my device to how it was before is either:
Restoring System, Data and Boot , in which case booting ends up in Fastboot.
OR
Restoring Data and Boot, and System Image, and then not being able to login (plus, no access to Data from TWRP).
I have literally no idea what else to do. If anyone has any idea or suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated.
I'd rather wait for some suggestions before trying to flash other zip files that deal with encryption, since I never had to do that when I first rooted with Magisk.

- Data backup is not working due to device encryption
How to Install
0. READ F.A.Q section first here
1. Unlock your bootloader
2. Boot to Odin mode
3. Check AP box and select TWRP tar file

F.A.Q:
What is data encryption and why doesn't it work on TWRP?
Samsung M51 uses file-based encryption that encrypts the user data partition.
By default, TWRP can't decrypt user data partition, which makes it impossible for us to access the internal device storage from TWRP or recovery MTP, which means you can't put ROM files on your internal phone storage and flash them from there.
What is Multi disabler and how does it affect your phone?
- Multi disabler disables and removes the encryption on the data partition, which makes it possible for you to access your internal storage from TWRP or recovery MTP. thus, making it possible for you to flash files from internal storage.
- Removing the encryption on your device's internal storage makes it possible for you to access your files from recovery directly, which makes it possible for anyone to access your private files without your permission from recovery.
- All of the above means that your device will be less secure. So if you care about device encryption then don't flash the multi disabler and use a USB OTG or a sdcard to flash ROMs, which I recommend. Otherwise, flash the multi disabler at your own risk!!!
- FLASHINF MULTI DISABLER REQUIRES PERFORMING A FULL DATA WIPE WHICH MEANS YOU WILL LOSE YOUR DATA. SO BACKUP YOUR DATA BEFORE FLASHING IT.
My device keeps rebooting to recovery after flashing TWRP, why?
Most probably you will need to wipe your data partition and flash multidisabler
Data backup is not working even after flashing multidisabller, why?
Current multidisabler still can't fully disable FBE encryption, which means that TWRP can't read data partition at all, hence creating backups will always fail.
Reserved just in case
Thank you so much for your efforts,
Does backup, restore, work smoothly in this version of twrp? Does it fully restore after making a backup? Or are there still mistakes?
In Twrp 3.4.0 Data backup is not loading. Nonoperating. But the system is loading.
Oh, thank you, thank you.

Currently I have no working ROM so I can't test back and restore functionality. But backing data should be working.. don't take that for granted tho..
It would be great if you can test that and report if it's working or not, or wait until I or someone else test that.
thank you for your efforts. i installed this twrp and flashed mutlidisabler. also formatted data before reboot. Unfortunately twrp does not allow to create backups. Cannot unmount system partition etc...Your android 10 TWRP version is creating and restoring backups allright. So for now have to continue using android 10!

backups will not work because of device encryption. Even after flashing mutldisabler, the device will keep encrypting the data.

Thanks.
Do you think that Magisk prerooting prior to TWRP flash might help here?
Or maybe we should just for full official Android 11 twrp release...
TeamWin updates TWRP to 3.5.1, Android 11 support coming soon
They're calling it a 'mini release' with a few notable feature improvements

Fyi -i have spare m51 device with android 11 installed. Ready to use it for any kind of twrp test builds. This is a good phone and we must have twrp for android 11 developed here. Thanks

prerooting won't solve encryption issues. Maybe when TWRP can be build using android 11, we can fix encryption issues or at least partially fix it.

Did you even read the FAQ section?
anyways, backups will fail because of data encryption
Does this TWRP require to format data after installing without Multi disabler?

Nope, but you may need to install multidisabler to prevent the phone from reverting back to stock recovery. Don't formate the data after flashing Multidisabler and see if the phone boots or not

well i already tested that twrp build and it does not allow to create backup (which is the main reason i need twrp to start with). i will test your lineage roms no problem. Do you think that twrp will work properly with lineage 18?
