OTA's language hard-coded? - Moto G7 Plus Questions & Answers

This is a pretty dumb question, and has zero impact on anything other than a slight annoyance.
My device is a RETLA, so default language was spanish. I've set to english on its first boot from day 0 and have had zero issues at all in terms of language system wide (as expected) after all subsequent updates. One thing though is when I receive OTA's they come in in spanish and do not take system language settings, i.e. the update info page, and all pages threw the update process display in spanish. Are OTA packages language hard-coded? I'm assuming others probably have noticed it, just couldnt seem to find it brought up before.
Again its not a big deal at all, more just wondering if this is the case.

I'm gonna guess that yes, they are hard-coded.
You'd think that the upgrade software would at least check the device's language and then look for the message files in that language from the OTA site. Although not phone/mobile software, this is the procedure I do for some business software I maintain.
Even if we were in the right locale (Latin America for us retla's) not even everyone there speaks Spanish.

I don't think so, RETBR, Brazil, comes with all languages available on AOSP, from Portuguese to various Chinese dialects, if I set english, OTA updates comes with english informations from the update.

Huh that's interesting . I wonder if anyone else in any other software channel has noticed this. Although everyone knows you RETBR users get special treatment , first to get updates, access to beta's , OTA's in the language set in system ...etc etc ?

We aren't special, it's because Motorola is the most selling brand in Brazil, behind only Samsung, it's one of the most populated countries in the world, it's the most important market for Motorola, where the majority Moto users are from.
Besides that, you can always flash a RETBR ROM and receive the soak tests, betas and updates before all other channels, just unlock the bootloader, flash the RETBR ROM and then relock the bootloader.

I was attempting to be facetious/make a joke my friend hence the winky face, clearly the intensions were lost in text, I didn't ACTUALLY mean it is special, was trying to be lighthearted...

I must say I was rather surprised when I looked at the webstats just now. Over the course of yesterday, it looked like 1000 people from Czechosolavkia have visited xda-developers.com. We normally get around 1000 visitors a day now, so that made 2000 for yesterday. (No worries: we're well-hosted).
As it turns out, they inline the Manipulator screenshot image on their pages, so not all of these people really dropped by. If possible, I would like one of our czech readers to give us an idea of what is said on:
http://www.mobilmania.cz/Mobilnitelefony/Ar.asp?ARI=104106&CAI=2111
No word-for-word translation, but more the gist of what's being said in article and reactions.
In a loose translation, the head said something like
"Unlock the XDA for yourself"
and it linked to your site saying there is a possibility of unlocking the XDA/MDA yourself
Hope the method is not too dangerous, there are many freaks in Prague now, making their own serial cable (all have been sold out yesterday) and unlocking those machines.
Hope it was helpful
Zviratko
Thank you for the translation.

Nah, the unlocking is completely without risk, and we trust the counter reset and the IMEI change as well. We've only had one report of a phone losing it's IMEI (and reverting to the backup IMEI of zeroes for the six last positions).
ok then sad i didn't get one as well

anyone willing to make me a simple custom ROM?

Hi,
I am wanting a very simple custom rom but I am not sure how to "cook" one.
I've read the tutorials, etc.. but I'm still very confused.
I will try to get a hang of it, so I can make a truly customied Rom, but in a mean while can someone be kind enough to make me a basic custom ROM?
All I need/want is a UK ROM (or any english based rom) with Korean fonts, Korean Keyboard, Korean Thumb keyboard, Powerdic (All theses are pre-included in SKTELCOM ROM).
Korean Thumb Keyboard is like the one in HTC devices where you can type letters with onscreen number pad (I believe it's called "SKY II" in the Korean ROM)
Basically, I need an English ROM with full Korean Support. (powerdic is a dictionary program included in Korean ROM)
I could install softwares to my X1 with English ROM to get a similar result, and I tried but the result wasn't perfect - I was not able to read at some conditions and not able to write sometimes as well)
Can anyone PLEASE be kind enough to make one for me?
I hope it won't take that long..
Thanks for looking.
no one will do it for free. you should consider giving some incentives, otherwise everyones' gonna ignore you

for this you have my kitchen
just use it
br
If I get a chance later I will
But I can't promise anything, it'll depend on how my time pans out.
You should try to cook it yourself? Maybe instead, ask for like a "How To Cook Basic Rom" guide or something. Just like being able to take someones rom and maybe tweak it a bit to your own liking? Less hassle for them and puts more control into your own hands.

I've actually read some tutorials and guides but could not fully understand.
So, I went one to try something, and I wasn't going anywhere.
First of all, I didn't know what folders had what, and did not configure how to mix components.

Thanks a lot!
I'll try to figure something out in a mean while..
Hope I can find some who did something similar already..
Most audience in here are English user. For this kind of language specific request, normally you should look for forums in yr language community. I am not sure about Korean, but I know there's a lot of those forums for Chinese and Russian (in fact, many of them are really hard-core hacker).
The reason I need help from ENG speaking people is that I live in Canada and I use my phone in this country.
Sadly, Korea uses a bit different structure for mobile phones and there are a few things that work differently - for example, SMS feature is a lot different.
Since I am a Korean-Canadian, I use Korean language as well.
Only thing I need is Korean language input/output, and possibly ABC tabs in contact list converted in Korean Language - I think I can find a way for this by modifying some registries.
If someone can at least make Packages from SKTELCOM ROM, then I guess I can finish the rest.
I tried extracting and got stuck in making them into packages..
Plus, I don't know where the language related files are usually located from the extracted stuff..

Well I've just cooked you one, in fact two, but it's not booting. I'll try again tomorrow.
If you use evrius ultilanguage GUI rom kitchen, it'll extract the rom from nbh and make it into packages, it's all pretty easy to do. Then do the same with the UK (or NA) one and combine, but it's not happened with me tonight.
Language files are all those in 412 folders.
WOW, Thanks so much for trying that for me.
I will also try to make something out of it with the info you gave me.
Thanks

hi fards, just curious if you might have been successful in the cooked rom dahanist was looking for. I'm in the same situation, except I live in korea and cant really take advantage of the phone with a full korean OS, so i want to install an English OS but keep all the korean compatibility for sms, input, etc. Figured this might do the trick. Any luck yet?
By the way, there's a seperate thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500446) where several people in my position are willing to pay money for a good cooked English ROM with korean language support, how's that for incentive?
got it

[Q] [REQ] Multi Region/Countries Blinkfeed

Greetings fellow XDA community members,
I was wondering if a mod/script that changes the blinkfeed selection to multiple regions or countries instead of just one, because I have a friend whom he wants to view both Australian and German blinkfeed, unfortunately, in the way blinkfeed designed originally is to only allow one region or country to be chosen.
I believe some of us are corporate travelers and works overseas all the time and would like to check news on blinkfeed, but also stay in touch and up to date with two or more regions at the same time. i.e. German soccer news & Australian Entertainment and politics news...
The sad parts is I am actually new to Android, so I couldn't help my friend or myself, and my insufficient knowledge of coding hinders my potential to fully utilize this great phone. I could only rely on the great custom roms and kernels that has been put out there by the developers.
It would be great if any developers out there that could shed some light on this.

Information for UK customers

I noticed that both Germany (upated to 127) and India (face unlock) have had updates but after talking on chat to the UK Honor rep there apparently is no information about any updates/features for UK customers.
Additionally tried to register for club.hihonor.com and the 'Country/Region' selection does not even include the UK at all.
So apparently we're ok to buy them and pay full price same as everyone else, but not ok for the same level of support or customer service.
I'm putting this here because I bought this phone after the positive reviews from many commentators but it's now obvious to me that these commentators don't all do their homework properly and some just concentrate on the product and forget about the other differentiator, which is the after-sales, customer service and support.

Yes I'm aware of project treble, but that has absolutely nothing to do with honor, several other android phones support project treble indeed it is a must by google that any device with Oreo out of the box has to support it. The point i was making was particular to honor support not android in general. Additionally project Treble requires you to unlock the BL, OTA updates by manufacturer do not.

Apologies but your quoted project treble so i assumed you were familiar with what that entails. You can read up on it if you need deeper info but what it comes down to is to use project treble you replace your system.img partition and you cannot do that without unlocking your bootloader. A manufacturer provided OTA update is signed and therefore updates your system normally without having to unlock anything just a standard system update. That is why the point is that if honor does not provide updates you have to resort to some custom update which is not the same. Now Honor has already updated both German and Indian honor 9 Lite (read threads here and you'll find reference to that) but UK ones are not even scheduled according to their own customer service who i chatted with. Try and register on club.hihonor.com and you'll discover the UK according to them is not even on the planet since they list most countries except the UK.

As far as I understood Project Treble is more related to the vendor partition. Never ever heard before that you have to unlock the bootloader to get updates from Project Treble. Are you sure about that? Any links?

go here https://forum.xda-developers.com/pr...-development/experimental-phh-treble-t3709659 and search for 'vendor partition' and you'll realise what you say is partially correct. Some vendors integrate the vendor partition inside system.img some have A and B partitions some only have A partition (like ours). You can never overwrite the system partition without unlocking the bootloader because it is set to read only, if it wasn't the whole of the android community would be in a heap of trouble. Imagine users (who don't know what they're doing) gaining access to /system and amending stuff, the result will most likely boot loop or soft/hard brick your device.
Anyway, this is taking us away from the point I was making and apologies but will not be adding anything further, if you do not agree with it that ofcourse is your prerogative.

Actions speak louder than words and by its actions to its UK customer base huawei/honor is showing how much it truly values us. Since there is absolutely nothing we can do about it i suggest best course of action is to vote with your feet and next purchase will be anything but a huawei/honor. At least that is still within our control. Huawei/honor give you some great value on hardware side unfortunately evidence shows that doesn't carry over to the software.

Which is what mine said till i used the Firmware tool on this site to upgrade from 8.0.0.128 to 8.0.0.131 so now i am on the latest. If you do the same i suggest you use the Full OTA update.
Huawei UK also said that 8.0.0.128 was the latest for the UK as well.

Software Channel is "na"

I purchased a G6 Project-Fi edition.
Re-flashed it to stock. Now my software channel is "na"
The phone is stuck on the May update (OPS27.82-72)
When I try to update it says it's up to date.
What does the software channel "na" mean?
How can I get it to a software channel that receives OTA updates?
Also how can I do this all without data loss?
first: why did you re-flash to stock and how did you do that? what's your phone model and what was the build number before you re-flashed it?
If you use a Project-Fi phone as an unlocked phone, text and other features do not work.
I used build OPS27.82-72 found on XDA. Still does not answer what the "na" channel is or how I can flash to another build without data loss.

You really should answer peoples questions. They are trying to help you.
As for the phone, again, why are you flashing stock? The Project-Fi variant is most likely stock anyways other than a Project-Fi app possibly(pretty sure there is one to manage your service but I may be wrong.
What is the software channel? It tells carriers what region of the world your phone is designed for. For example, if it is set to retla, this is a Latin American channel and would not receive carrier updates if you were using it on a US-based carrier. I am pretty confident a google search for "software channel android" would have answered your question about 7 hours ago when you asked it. Why wait 7 hours for a response when Google can instantly answer your question. Even if you have to check out a few sites to get a proper answer, it is faster than waiting 8 hours on a response.
Now with that said, you can try booting into your bootloader and execute this command:
Code:
fastboot oem config carrier retus
Reboot and see if that changes anything.
It would be a good idea to link to the thread containing the firmware you flashed as well.

Man, between you and the first guy, I'm not even sure why I bother to ask the question. Last I checked the title of the forum was Questions and Answers...
I've got the question part down, but seems like I cannot get a straight answer.
My question, what does the software channel "na" mean? I know what a software channel is and how it works. I'm not asking that, what I am asking is what does the channel "na" represent.
If your so confident in Google, use it to answer my question... I tried with no avail. I got close with this article, https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/help/identify-software-channel-t3555285 , but na was not listed.
Also I can wait, 7 hours, 7 day, who cares as long as I can get an answer and not some snarky comments.
Now to answer some more questions that do not help to get me an answer...
The Project-Fi version is more than an unlocked phone with an app. I thought the same as well, but when you put in a SIM card from another carrier text messages do not work. (Even with the correct APN settings). My guess it has to do with the way the service bounces from one carrier to another.
I don't remember the firmware I flashed, it was months ago. I do know it was signed and official Moto firmware.
Thank you for the fastboot command, I will try that and see what it does.

Man, between you and the first guy, I'm not even sure why I bother to ask the question. Last I checked the title of the forum was Questions and Answers...
I've got the question part down, but seems like I cannot get a straight answer.

You don't see it listed because it's not a an actual channel. It means n/a as in not applicable. Given nothing works somebody such as yourself should be able to figure this out and realize something is wrong with your radio software or hardware wise. Maybe it's because you swear the Moto G6 fi is different than all the others G6's and you flashed firmware from a standard G6 which has different hardware? But if that's the case tell me what the specs are of the G6 fi vs the G6? You only need to list the differences.
There is a number of reasons I asked for the link to stock. However since you want to be have an attitude, and you have all the answers(research the G6 fi vs the G6 and you will understand) I guess you don't need to post here for help. You should have all the answers already.
BTW, how'd that fastboot command work out?

I never said "nothing works", What I said is the Project-Fi variant does not work as an unlocked phone. Calls and data work, but messages do not. It's even on its own Project-Fi software channel. Hardware wise its all the same. I would love to know how the Project-Fi phones handle SMS that is different that an unlocked phone, but that wasn't the question asked.
Now, once the phone was flashed to a non-Fi firmware everything works. Well, just not updating. My guess is since the phone does not have a valid channel it cannot update.
Phone is out of my posestion at the moment, hence why no update, but as soon as I get it back I will let you know.
Quick question, the bootloader is locked, I assume the fastboot command needs an unlocked bootloader?
